Intel silicon market to touch $10b by 2011

Dubai: Netbooks are continuing to grow the overall market for Intel silicon and we still anticipate this to be a $10 billion opportunity by 2011, said a top Intel official.

"Atom, Intel's solution for small computing, is a new micro-architecture designed for low power from the ground up. Small computing products based on the Atom architecture include today's netbooks as well as many handheld design wins. This new micro-architecture development was done with a very small and efficient design team that utilised the entire existing Intel development infrastructure while also delivering an innovative, low-power solution that is compatible with the Intel Architecture ecosystem," Ferhad Patel, Intel Regional Market Development Manager for Middle East Turkey and Africa region, said.

He said the next generation Atom platform code-named Pine Trail will be launched in early 2010. That next Atom processor platform will deliver better performance, improved graphics, improved thermals and lower average power enabling a new class of netbooks.

Netbooks are helping grow the mobile PC market segment overall and yet still account for about only 15-16 per cent of all mobile PCs sold globally.

"In terms of netbook features compared to notebooks, I would say the processor inside will impact how much and what you can do with your computer. When people shop for a PC, they should first consider how they plan to use it and where and how much they'll store on the PC. "

"Intel has been working on a new platform called MID (Mobile Internet Device) based on the Intel Atom processor and the next-generation MID platform. Scheduled to launch by 2010 it will deliver up to 50x platform idle power reduction while reducing the board size by 2x compared to Intel's first generation MID platform," Patel said.

Regarding of screen size, he said screens are a component that greatly impacts "system price point". Therefore, Intel is recommending 10-inch screens for netbooks to enable affordable system price points. The performance expectation between netbooks and value notebooks should be significant based on the differences in design characteristics (power, size, etc) between small, simple netbooks and full featured notebooks. Regarding outlook of the industry, he said netbook growth continues to be strong, with a majority of them featuring Atom processors.
