Chile vs Switzerland Player Ratings

Colin Chong rates the players in Chile's narrow 1-0 victory over Switzerland in Group H.

Chile

Claudio Bravo - 6
He has the referee and poor finishing from the Swiss to thank for his clean sheet today.

Mauricio Isla - 7
Started where he left off in the last match. Full of energy and running down the right but the final ball from him has been poor.

Gary Medel - 6.5
It is quite unbelievable he is only 22 years of age as he plays like a seasoned professional.

Waldo Ponce - 6
He was just standing around watching his team throw away golden opportunities to double the lead.

Gonzalo Jara - 6.5
He may have been pushed further up after the sending off to a more attacking position.

Arturo Vidal (46' off) - 6
Deemed surplus after the sending off, but his first half performance was commendable.

Carlos Carmona - 7
Forced a save from the Swiss keeper with a beautiful shot early in the game. Suspended for the next match as he got booked again and Chile may just miss him against the Spanish.

Matias Fernandez (65' off) - 6.5
Took awhile to settle into the game, with the accuracy of his passing a constant threat for the Swiss.

Alexis Sanchez - 7
A rather selfish man in my opinion. Unfortunately, the best chances of the game came from him. Exciting player to watch nonetheless.

Humberto Suazo (46' off) - 6
Did not do well today to justify his prolific goal scoring record.

Jean Beausejour - 6.5
Used his big frame to hold off defenders well, and whipped in a couple of good crosses from the left.

Substitutions

Jorge Valdivia (46' on) - 7
The first substitute I've seen in this tournament who has had an immediate impact on the game.

Mark Gonzalez (46'on) - 6.5
Just had to nod in a free header to give Chile the lead, but his contributions in the game were rather

Esteban Paredes (65' on)- 7
The two substitutions worked well together with Parades picking out Gonzalez brilliantly. Had the goal at his mercy but could not kill the game not once, but twice.

Switzerland

Diego Benaglio- 7
Benaglio did a good job between the posts today. It may have been a different story if the Chilean players were less selfish.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - 7
There was nothing he could do to prevent the goal. Superb in defence on one end, wasteful in attack in the other.

Steve von Bergen - 8
Was all around his penalty area making sure no Chilean player had a sight on goal. Steve was outstanding today.

Stephane Grichting - 7
Hardly put a foot wrong in the game and his defenders can walk out with their heads held high.

Reto Ziegler - 6
Had to commit fouls to break the swift Chilean attack, but held his defensive line well.

Valon Behrami (31' sent off) - 5.5
He was having a fine game until the sending off. Once again we can count on the referee to ruin a match.

Gokhan Inler - 7
Hard tackling Inler gave his all for Switzerland today, putting in solid tackles in both penalty boxes.

Benjamin Huggel - 5.5
Once a landscape gardener, he did not look comfortable around the grass of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Gelson Fernandes (77' off) - 7
He may just win the award for the "most distance covered in a game", if there was one.

Alexander Frei (42' off) - 5
Did not look 100% fit today and barely had a sniff of the ball.

Blaise N´Kufo (68' off) - 6
A physical presence for the Swiss and looked dangerous on the counter attack with him around.

Substitutions

Tranquillo Barnetta (42' on) - 6.5
The Chilean left wing was too much for the Swiss to handle, but he was ever ready to charge forward when the Swiss needed to counter.

Eren Derdiyok (68' on) - 6
Squandered a perfect opportunity to grab a point for the Swiss in the dying minutes of the game.

Albert Bunjaku (77' on) - 5
Could not get his footing right in the few minutes he was on. A wasteful substitution.
