Daniel Teo rates the players in Spain's comfortable 2-0 victory over Honduras as they get their campaign on the way.
It could have been more, but Spain beat Honduras 2-0 thanks to double from David Villa, who should have had a hat-trick if not for a missed penalty.
Spain:
Iker Casillas - 6.5
With a distraction in the form of his reporter girlfriend at the touchline, Casillas can count himself lucky not to have many chances to 'muck it up'.
Carles Puyol - 7.5
A stroll in the park for the Barcelona defender. Gave a typically solid performance and looked impenetrable against the feeble Honduras attack.
Gerard Piqué - 7
The most uncomfortable event for the centre-back was suffering a bloodied mouth.
Joan Capdevila - 7
An easy outing on the left for Capdevila. Was part of the attacking Spanish contingent for majority of the game.
Sergio Ramos (Off 76') - 6.5
The Real Madrid defender had a glorious chance to put his side in the lead after finding himself unmarked from a Xavi cross but headed over the bar. Had a couple of other good chances which he failed to finish. Defensive wise, not much to for him to sweat about.
Xabi Alonso - 7
A typical Alonso performance, he was calm and collected throughout the night and played an almost perfect passing game.
Sergio Busquets - 6.5
Many predicted the Barcelona player to be dropped but he took his place in the starting line-up and had a comfortable game in midfield.
Fernando Torres (In 69') - 6.5
El Nino is certainly not back to his lethal best. Missed a couple of sitters which he would have scored nine times out of ten. Would have been disappointed to be taken off half-way through the second-half.
Xavi (Off 65') - 7.5
As usual, the Barcelona midfield general did not lose a single ball. Was taken off for Cesc Fabregas half-way through the second half.
David Villa - 8.5
Nearly a perfect night if not for his penalty miss. But what an opening goal by the Barcelona striker after showing great feet to cut in from the left before finding the top right-hand corner of the net. Was slightly fortunate with his second after his shot took a deflection on the way to the net.
JesĂşs Navas - 6.5
The lively winger was constantly raiding the right flank and gave the weak Honduras defence a run about. Earned the penalty which David Villa missed.
Substitutions:
Cesc Fabregas (In 65') - 6.5
Almost scored within minute after coming on but had his goal-bound shot cleared off the line after rounding the keeper.
Mata (In 69') - 6.5
Looked lively after coming on for Torres and created a couple of good chances for his team-mates
Alvaro Arbeloa (In 76') - 6
The Liverpool defender was brought on as fresh legs for Ramos. Had nothing much to do during his time on the pitch.
Honduras:
Noel Valladares - 6
Could do nothing to stop Spain's two goals. Otherwise, he made a couple of good saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
Maynor Figueroa - 5
Was quite simply overwhelmed by the waves of Spanish attack.
Osman Chávez - 5
Had too much to handle with the Spanish attackers queuing up to have a shot at goal.
Emilio Izaguirre - 6
Was flummoxed by the tricky Navas. Picked up an unlucky yellow-card for a soft tackle against the Spaniard.
Sergio Mendoza - 5
The right-back was given a torrid time by the Spanish attackers and simply could not contain them.
Amado Guevara - 5.5
Was no match against the more illustrious and quick Spanish midfield.
Wilson Palacios - 5.5
Very much the only known player in the Honduras side, the Wigan player was largely disappointing and hardly had any chances to make any difference.
Walter MartĂnez - 5
The midfielder was quite simply drowned out of the game by the solid Spanish defence and made little significant difference to the attack.
Roger Espinoza (Off 46') - 4
Nothing memorable for the left midfielder as he was taken off just after the break.
Danilo Turcios - 5.5
The right midfielder worked hard but found little joy on the left as he simply did not have the pace needed to get past the Spanish back-line.
David Suazo (Off 83') - 5
Found little joy up front on his own. Was comfortably marshaled by Puyol and gang.
Substitutes:
George Welcome (In 46') - 5
Was welcomed into the game just after the break but a stronger impact from him would have been welcomed.
Jerry Palacios (In 83') - N/A
