Colin Chong watched a resilient USA side beat Algeria in stoppage time to top Group C, ahead of England.
USA
Tim Howard - 6
Did not have many saves to make, but he is the few consistent keepers in the competition
Carlos Bocanegra - 6.5
Reliable Bocanegra had nothing to do till he had to make a vital interception, which turned out to be priceless.
Jay DeMerit - 5.5
Looked shaky at the back. Perhaps the pressure was too much for him to take.
Steve Cherundolo - 6
Made runs forward whenever he could, but protecting Howard was his priority.
Jonathan Bornstein - 5 (81' off)
Left back had a torrid time against the Algerian forwards and looked stretched for 81 minutes.
Michael Bradley - 8
Shielded the ball to maintain possession well for the USA; looked comfortable with the ball.
Clint Dempsey - 8.5
Finally found his lethal form. First he had a goal disallowed for being a whisker offside, then he hit the wood work, following up on the rebound to fire the ball into the stands.
Maurice Edu (64' off) - 6
Had a poor game giving the ball away on many occasions.
Landon Donovan - 7
Tested the keeper immediately after Djebbour hit the crossbar. Was in the shadows till he came from nowhere and scored the winner. The American hero had done it again.
Herculez Gomez (46' off) - 5
Why he started the game in place of Buddle will be a major talking point.
Jozy Altidore
Altidore ballooned a clear cut opportunity to put his team in front. He should have left it for Donoan. His leap however, could be an asset to the Americans if they are to go far.
Substition
Benny Feilhaber (46' on) - 6
Tried to beat the keeper when he should have squared it to his teammates in the box.
Edson Buddle (64' on) - 6
Looked lively and injected some pace into his team's play. If only he had more playing time...
DaMarcus Beasley (81' on) - 5
For a player with so much playing time in Europe, he sure needs to pull up his socks.
Algeria
Rais M'Bohli - 9
Pulled off a couple of saves to keep his team in the game. Man of the match performance from him. You really got to feel for him.
Madjid Bougherra - 6.5
His hard work did not pay off unfortunately as he watched his teammates wasteful in front of goal.
Nadir Belhadj - 7.5
Looked unstoppable everytime he starts rampaging down the left.
Anther Yahia - 5
The skipper's mission was to maintain the referee's record of a red card a day.
Rafik Halliche - 6.5
His no nonsense clearances were essential to relieve his team of pressure everytime the Americans were in advance positions.
Medhi Lacen - 6.5
Although we did not see much of him, he had the huge responsibility of breaking the countless American attacks.
Karim Ziani (69' off) - 7
Always lurking around the penalty to shoot from distance or provide the killer pass.
Hassan Yebda - 7.5
Very quick on the ball giving the American defence problems all day with his pace. For some strange reason he was allowed to take shots all day long.
Foued Kadir - 6.5
Kadir was always present when Algeria wanted to hit the Americans on the counter. A little sloppy in defence though.
Karim Matmour - 7
The intelligent forward was always in dangerous positions, always positive in his runs and passes.
Rafik Djebbour (66' off) - 7.5
Great anticipation to get behind the defenders all night. Hit the crossbar just minutes into the game.
Substitutions
Abdelkader Ghezzal (66' on) - 6
Always looking for the foul when he should be muscling he way past defenders. Should have done better.
Adlene Guédioura (69' on) - 5.5
He looked like the kind of player who could not make an impact in any game he plays.
Rafik Saifi (86' on)
