"Mortal Kombat" had an impressive showing at this year's E3. The franchise has gone through peaks and valleys (mostly valleys) over the last two decades, so it's good to see promise on the horizon. It's also interesting to think about paths not taken, including a canceled co-op game, starring Scorpion and Sub Zero, that would've been the follow-up to the so-so side-scroller, "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks."
Speaking with GameInformer, Ed Boon (long-time helmer of the "MK" franchise) mentioned that after "Shaolin Monks," the developer was going to start work on "Fire & Ice." Sounds like the idea would've been similar, but it would've starred the two most familiar faces of the franchise, instead of starring the Bruce Lee knock-off and the dude with the sharp hat.
"They actually started the early stages of that game," said Boon, "But they couldn’t do it in time and under budget, so the project was canceled and kind of went away."
Scorpion and Sub Zero have always had an entertaining, love/hate, freeze/spear relationship, and I would've probably enjoyed seeing them in their own game, but alas, it was not to be. Maybe they should look into a Cyrax/Sektor buddy comedy next?
