Spain and Netherlands will vie to become the new world champions and book a place in their respective nations' folklores.
While Spain have long been penned for the final on many World Cup wall charts before the event, the rise of the Dutch has somewhat came as a surprise for many.
Nevertheless, the two entertaining sides have come a long way and overcame obstacles en route to the final. Spain threatened to become the biggest casualty of the group stages after their opening loss to Switzerland and while the Netherlands had a reasonably smooth passage in the group stage, they had to overcome all odds to beat favourites and reigning world champions Brazil in the quarter-finals after trailing 1-0 at the break.
But that is that and the two nations will battle it out for the ultimate prize in football at Soccer City tonight.
This may come as a surprise for many, but tonight will be the very first time Spain and Netherlands meet at a World Cup with the two footballing giants clashing just nine times in their recorded history.
They do share something in common though - Both nations have never in their storied history lifted the World Cup trophy, with the Dutch coming close in 1974 and 1978 and Spain taking part in their first ever World Cup final.
The Furia Roja will be on a mission to exorcize the ghost of underachivement once and for all - despite winning the European Championships in 2008 while the Oranje will look to lay the ghosts of 1974 and 1978 to rest.
But only one pair of hands will lift the most prestigious trophy in football - Either Iker Casillas' or Giovanni van Bronkhorst's.
