All 24 pilot whales have died in a pod that became stranded in a New Zealand mangrove swamp.
Department of Conservation area manager Jonathan Maxwell said the mammals had been stranded for some time and 10 survivors were in poor shape. They were euthanized Friday because poor weather and a long wait for high tide meant there was almost no chance of them being refloated successfully.
The pod was trapped in shallow water and mud in Parengarenga Harbor on northern North Island.
