It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Star Gains 50 Pounds for Role

Well, Kaitlin Olsen did gain a lot of weight during her pregnancy (which was worked into the show for her character, Dee Reynolds). But that's not who I'm talking about. I'm talking about actor Rob McElhenney, Olsen's husband. The actor, who plays Mac in the FX comedy series, has reportedly gained fifty pounds for the show's seventh season, which is just about to wrap up filming. Well, we say reportedly; we have a picture (courtesy WENN). That's McElhenney on the left, with wife Olsen and their son Axel on the right.
He looks pretty chunky, doesn't he? But why exactly is McElhenney, who usually boasts a muscular physique, packing on the pounds?
"Rob McElhenney has intentionally gained 50 pounds for this season," shared his co-star Charlie Day in an interview with Collider. "It's been disgusting to watch him pursue this venture... We're a little bit on the fence about it, just for his own personal health and safety, but it has definitely made Mac a lot funnier this season because he still thinks he has the body of an Adonis."
Glenn Howerton, who plays Dennis on the show, stated that from Mac's point of view, he's built up his body mass so that he can "chisel it down." McElhenney himself described the transformation as similar to carving the statue of David.
It's all just one massive joke, of course, which stemmed from McElhenney's noticing that sitcom characters get progressively better looking. Having "never seen a sitcom in which the actors progressively got worse looking," something he finds "truer to life," McElhenney decided to gain fifty pounds by eating 5,000 calories a day. "Every day, I drink a huge shake with Weight Gainer and ice cream, and I eat donuts," he shared.
For fans of the series at least hoping to see a healthier Mac, McElhenney says he won't continue weighing 205 pounds after filming for the season ends. "F**k no!" he enthused. "I can't. My liver wouldn't be able to take it."
"[It's] too bad," Day lamented. "Because it's definitely funnier."
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's seventh season will premiere in September.
