Here is a treat for those True Blood fans who are all about Eric Northman (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd), HBO has released an 'Eric' promo just in time for the premiere on Sunday. In addition last night was the official premiere of season 4 at ArcLight’s Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles which was attended by many of the cast past and present. Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd looked as dapper as ever posing with real life husband and wife Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer. So what is in store for Eric in season 4?
Where season 3 ended for Eric: Bill (Stephen Moyer) tried to get rid of all the vampires that knew about the special quality of Sookie's (Anna Paquin) blood, but this did not go according to plan and Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) managed to save Eric from the cement grave that Bill had put him in. Eric then proceeded to tell Sookie that Bill had always known that there was something special about Sookie and that he had engineered their first encounter and set it all up so that he would have to heal her with his blood. This news caused Sookie to demand that they both get out of her life, though Eric got to utter one last line of sympathy to Sookie "I'm sorry to see you suffer like this." HBO has issued a promo with this cliffhanger (along with ones for every major character) and have added in a line showing Eric's thoughts about what getting rid of Bill means; he can now get the thing he most desires (see clip below).
What is to come? Eric is going to have a life changing experience at the hands of the powerful witch coven, who will make him suffer amnesia. This will mean that he still has the same physical strength but that his other resources will be lacking. Skarsgård told The Hollywood Reporter that "the Eric you thought you knew is gone and it changes the dynamic between Eric and Sookie as well." One part of the dynamic that is still there is that Eric is still attracted to Sookie but will this more vulnerable side of Eric make Sookie succumb to her desires that we have seen before (and not just the ones that are influenced by his blood in her system)? One thing that is clear is that in the fourth book there is a shower scene between the two that is very popular due to its steamy nature and there has been much talk of whether this will be included this season, especially as several of the promos are showing Sookie after a shower.
Where does this leave Bill? It looks like he will be out in the cold for now and that he takes to single life by becoming part of the American Vampire League's campaign to improve public relations with humans. Though all is not necessarily lost for those hoping to see a reunion between Bill and Sookie, Stephen Moyer gives his insight in to the love triangle:
"I think he loves her so much that he knows he has to step back. Hopefully at some point, there’s a glimmer of hope in him that maybe somewhere down the line something will happen. But at the moment, he knows it’s not going to be now. She’s got some mending to do. He knows the first person who’s going to step into that bridge is Eric and he has to let it be."
It really does look like Eric/Sookie fans will get the moment that they have been yearning for this season and with the added issue of an amnesiac Eric it could make for some great True Blood. The amnesia storyline is one that has been done often in TV (and even with vampires before in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) but unlike the much derided 24 amnesia arc this one sounds like it will enhance the story rather than being just a plot contrivance. Also what could be more fun than someone who is over 1000 years old with amnesia, who also happens to be a vampire?
