Game of Thrones Season 2 Casts Final New Major Character

Game of Thrones has rounded out its major casting for season 2. After Tuesday afternoon's revelation that both Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre had been cast, it was revealed later that night that the role of Davos Seaworth, the last remaining major character to be cast, had been filled. Liam Cunningham will be playing the seafaring "Onion Knight," who is probably the most significant new character addition to season 2.
Davos is the character through whose eyes we see Stannis and Melisandre. A former smuggler who aided Stannis during Robert's war against the Targaryens, Davos was knighted for his services but also lost four of his fingers as punishment for past crimes. Davos wears the bones of those digits in a pouch around his neck for luck. In the books, Davos serves as an honorable figure in a similar (albeit lesser) capacity to the late Ned Stark (Sean Bean).
Cunningham is probably best known for his lead role on BBC's Outcasts. More obscurely, he's appeared in episodes of Prime Suspect, Camelot, and Murphy's Law. Funnily enough, I just watched Cunningham's turn on Murphy's Law a few days ago, before news of his casting broke.
I can't say that Cunningham is who I'd envisioned when I pictured Davos in my head while reading, but I'm not complaining. If there's anything that the first season of Game of Thrones taught me, it's that the folks in charge of casting for the series know what they're doing. Having seen a great example of his acting inMurphy's Law (series 4, in which he's a cast member, will hit DVD on August 30), I can't say that I'm disappointed. If anything, I'm quite excited.
The next biggest role left for Game of Thrones to cast is that of the mysterious Jaqen H'ghar, who will be a major part of Arya's story in the upcoming season. Other, lesser characters who remain uncast include the "Leech Lord" Roose Bolton and Theon's steely father, Balon Greyjoy. We'll keep you posted on any further season 2 news that develops.
