Russell Crowe will, with all likely-hood, play Superman's dad in the upcoming Man of Steel reboot; that would be biological dad, Jor-El, not Earth dad Jonathan Ken - who will be played by Kevin Costner. If Jor-El's appearance is in keeping with big-screen Superman tradition, the role will be more of an extremely high-profile cameo than anything of immense story-narrative substance - calling on Crowe to espouse Kryptonian humanism as a fortress of solitude hologram to a young Clark on the verge of becoming Superman.
Variety is reporting that Crowe is "In negotiations" to take the part, so the casting is not yet set in stone. It would be difficult to imagine Crowe turning down such a plum part though.
