Seven got death sentence four times in Sialkot lynching case

The Anti-Terrorism Court announced verdict in the case pertaining to the public lynching of two brothers a year ago in Sialkot.


Anti-Terrorism Court Judge awarded four times death sentence to seven convicts, six were life imprisoned while five were acquitted.
The ATC court awarded three year imprisonment to nine policemen including DPO Waqar Chohan.


The court reserved the verdict at 1pm. Anti Terrorism court Judge is Mushtaq Ahmed Gondal.


The incident took place in Sialkot on 15 August 2010 when two brothers, Muneeb and Mughees were publicly lynched and killed by a mob while police officials stood by and watched.


Two FIRs were lodged at the Saddar police station. The first was lodged on the same day when the incident took place in which the two brothers were accused of murder and robbery.


The second FIR was lodged after the video of the lynching was played on news channels leading to a suo moto notice by the Supreme Court. The FIR was lodged against 28 including police officials accused of not intervening when the incident was taking place.


Ten police officers including the DPO Sialkot along with 18 locals were arrested and presented in the anti-terrorism court.


The accused were charged on November 3, 2010 and the statements of 31 witnesses including two eyewitness were recorded out of 44, while rest of the 13 were rejected.


There were two investigations were carried out in the Sialkot lynching incident. One was carried out led by Justice (r) Kazim Ali on the directive of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, while the second investigation was done by a joint interrogation team led by Additional IG CID Mushtaq Sukhaira.
