It didn't hit me until the opening moments of Sunday's episode of Basketball Wives, but I think these ladies have something to blame for their constant beef. While past grudges, jealousy, and different allegiances are partially to blame for the chaotic environment that the show can become, one of the main culprits in stirring up trouble is Twitter.
Just think about it. Last season at the reunion, Royce got into it with Evelyn and Jennifer over who exactly leaked the nude pictures of both ladies that have made their way onto the internet since the show began last year. The reason they got into it? Royce's Twitter feed. She had been hearing from people that both ladies purposefully leaked their own pictures to get their name and face (and other things) out there on the blogs and such. Last week, Tami found out through Twitter that Evelyn was making shirts with relating to the "non-mother f-ing factor" comment from last season.
This week there wasn't the type of commotion that those two incidents were, but the seeds were definitely being sewn for next week. By now, you've likely seen the promo where Royce and Evelyn are throwing drinks at one another with the producers trying to pull them apart and blurred crotch shots aplenty. Also a part of that promo was Jennifer confronting Royce about how she was following Jennifer's ex on Twitter and constantly talking to him. All of that hot mess-ness (go with it) is going down next week with this week finding Royce bringing up her Twitter account early on (second episode in a row) and Jennifer officially turning in her divorce papers. Oh, VH1, how I love the foreshadowing.
There are other instances of Twitter drama that have come up on the show (another example: Evelyn met Ocho there and her relationship with the Cincinnati Bengal caused some strife between her and Royce), but in the span of basically four episodes, there have been three conflicts related to one's Twitter usage. I know that these women are all young, on a hit reality series, and very socially active, so having a Twitter is a foregone conclusion, but I know if I was having this much of a headache based on what I tweeted, who I followed, and people direct messaging me rumors, I would kind of think about closing up shop for a while. (Then again, maybe that's a reason I'm sitting here writing about Basketball Wives and not out there with a reality show of my own.) It obviously wouldn't be as good of a show if there wasn't any conflict to speak of, but when you put this many headstrong personalities in a room together and there will be a fight, Twitter or no Twitter.
Twitter has been like another character this season on Basketball Wives and we're only two episodes in. I think the prominent role of social networking makes the show decidedly current and the amount of exposure that Twitter provides is pretty conducive to drama (it's not just what you say anymore), but I hope that there are plenty of fights that come from their day-to-day interaction and not based off of timelines and DMs. Nonetheless, tonight was another good episode of Basketball Wives and it set the stage perfectly for what is sure to be a battle royale of a third episode next week.
What did you think about tonight's episode of Basketball Wives? How do you feel about Twitter's role in the interactions between the ladies? How many more Twitter-related fights will we get to see this season?
