In the comic book series The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes and his band of survivors never traveled to the CDC. Rick's son Carl fatally shot Shane through the neck after Shane threatened Rick at gunpoint over Lori. Merle and Daryl Dixon didn't exist.
That's all proof that The Walking Dead TV series is heavily deviating from its source material, and I'm very much okay with that. But it is sticking with the comic books at certain points -- for example, Hershel's farm. For the uninitiated, Hershel's farm is a major setting for the comic for several issues. While the survivors initially think it's safe, it holds a dark secret that will eventually be its undoing.
Hershel's farm will introduce at least three new characters to the show, according to a leaked casting call. We've got Hershel, the older man who owns the farm. Then there's Hershel's daughter Maggie, who is in her late teens/early twenties. Maggie will be a romantic interest for one fan favorite of the show. Finally, we've got Otis, a middle-aged guy who means well, but accidentally shoots Rick's sons Carl before he realizes who it is (Carl recovers, don't worry).
These characters aren't the only ones introduced at Hershel's farm in the comics, and they definitely won't be the only new survivors introduced in the second season. Just how many more will be popping up over the season's thirteen-episode run, however, is completely unknown at this point. We'll keep our eyes peeled for more casting calls and other news on season 2.
The Walking Dead will return for a second season in October.
