Pakistan coach Waqar Younis is confident Shahid Afridi would do well as captain in one-day internationals and Test cricket.
Afridi, who led Pakistan in the World T20 Cup in the West Indies, was last month named captain for the Asia Cup and the Test series in England even though the all-rounder has not played a Test since the mid-2006.
"Shahid Afridi led the team well in the T20 cricket and he was positive and communicated well with the players. I think he will produce similar results in one-dayers and Tests as well," Waqar told the media in Lahore .
On Shoaib Akhtar's inclusion in the team for the coming tournaments, Waqar said he was not sure about the fitness of the fast bowler.
"But a final decision has to be made by the selectors as they have seen him in the fitness test now," he said.
Waqar said inclusion of youngsters in the shortlist for the Asia Cup and England tour was a good step forward.
"Pakistan cricket is in a rebuilding process and I think the inclusion of fresh blood is a good move. They can learn a lot in England," he said.
The former Test captain also supported a rotation policy.
Waqar said Muhammad Yousuf's presence in the team would have been good for Pakistan during the England tour.
"Even before he retired I had spoken to him and tried to dissuade him from his decision but he had made up his mind and there was nothing much more I could do," he said.
"Shahid Afridi also wants him in the team in the interests of Pakistan cricket but if Yousuf has made up his mind then we can?t force him out of his retirement. But definitely if he was there for the England tour it would be good for the team," he said.
Yousuf retired from international cricket after the board banned him for an indefinite period in March for indiscipline on the shambolic Australian tour.
Waqar refused to comment on the re-appointment of former Test pacer Aaqib Javed as assistant coach.
"It is a decision of the board so I can't say much but I will be meeting with the board Chairman and discussing things with him," he said.
