The iPhone 4 pre-order saga continues, and following AT&T pushing back shipments of the new iOS4 smartphone until July 14th, Apple’s own online store has been updated to reflect the new July 14th date too. At present the delay only seems to be affecting the US, with the UK Apple store still showing the July 2nd ship date it was updated to yesterday.
Yesterday, Apple announced that they had seen in excess of a whopping 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4, overwhelming their systems and those of their carrier partner’s AT&T in the US. That was compounded by an apparent database error on AT&T’s part which saw customers attempting to upgrade their phones shown user information of other subscribers.
That confusion apparently caused multiple customers to double-order iPhone 4 handsets through AT&T, and the carrier’s confusingly-worded email response to the duplicates prompted uproar as buyers were left unclear on whether they would be getting a handset at all. Sales success aside, this hasn’t been the best week for Apple and AT&T’s relationship.
