Good evening all, and welcome to our coverage of the critical Group H match between Chile and Switzerland. The winner of this game is likely to top Group H, and both sides will be hoping to do so, enabling them to avoid Brazil in the next round.
Chile Starting XI (3-3-1-3):-Claudio Bravo; Mauricio Isla, Waldo Ponce, Arturo Vidal; Gary Medel, Carlos Carmona, Gonzalo Jara; Matias Fernandez; Alexis Sanchez, Humberto Suazo, Jean Beausejour.
Switzerland Starting XI (4-4-2): Diego Benaglio; Stephan Lichtsteiner, Stephane Grichting, Steve Von Bergen, Reto Ziegler; Valon Behrami, Gokhan Inler, Benjamin Huggel, Gelson Fernandes; Alexander Frei, Blaise Nkufo
Referee: Khalil Al-Ghamdi (Saudi Arabia)
Kick off is in just a few moments, and this should be an interesting clash of styles, as the defensive, compact side put together by Ottmar Hitzfeld attempts to meet the attacking, fluent team that Marcelo Bielsa has put together. And we're off! The Swiss, in their white strip, get us up and running. Chile are in red.
1 min - Humberto Suazo is immediately booked for a studs-up challenge on Grichting. Didn't seem to be much in it, but this referee, for those of you who watched the France-Mexico game, is a real stickler.
4 min - It's been very scrappy so far. Chile win a free kick after Sanchez bursts down the right, but the delivery is headed clear. It falls to Sanchez, whose shot is nowhere near goal. He should have crossed.
7 min - The Swiss get a free kick in a decent position outside the box. The referee holds up play after spotting some pushing and pulling, and then Frei's delivery is poor and goes past everyone.
10 min - Chile come close with two powerful shots in quick succession. First Vidal cut in from the left and unleashed a belter that was punched out by Benaglio, and then Carmona hit a volley sweetly but again Benaglio was alert and punched away. Chile are finding some rhythm here.
12 min - Swiss hearts skip a beat again as Sanchez gets round the back and pulls the ball out to Suazo on the edge of the area, but the striker thrashes at the shot and misses it entirely, managing to look rather comical in the process.
15 min - Sanchez pulls off a brilliant turn near the edge of the box, but his attempted ball through to Suazo is cut out easily. Chile are really exciting to watch, they move the ball very quickly, albeit without as much control as say, Argentina, or Brazil.
17 min - Nkufo is booked, though I'm not quite sure why, as he looked to do have done nothing wrong there. Dissent, I presume.
20 min - Nkufo can't quite get on the end of one through ball, and then Benaglio collects easily at the other end as Chile attempt to break.
22 min - Carmona is booked for a late tackle on Inler, and Switzerland have a free kick in Chile's half. The delivery comes to nothing, as Ponce heads clear and Chile then hoof it away to Beausejour. He attempts a long through pass, but it is overhit, and can't find Sanchez.
24 min - Waldo Ponce is booked for tapping the ball away. The resulting free kick finds the head of Grichting, but his attempt was just wide of the goal.
27 min - A poor backpass from Isla almost allows Frei to capitalize, but Bravo was quick coming out of his goal and is able to launch it clear.
29 min - The Swiss have been successful in dealing with Chile's pace so far, playing a good offside trap. Beausejour is flagged down after he looked to be free down the left.
RED CARD! Valon Behrami has been sent off! On the left hand side, Behrami attempted to maintain possession with Beausejour and Vidal trying to tackle him, and swung an arm back in the process, catching the shirt of Vidal, who goes down theatrically. The referee, who has been dreadful, decides to produce a straight red after being surrounded by a swarm of players, and the Swiss are down to ten men!
32 min - That red card will definitely divide opinions. There was no doubt it was a foul from Behrami, but certainly very few would consider it enough to warrant a straight red card. A yellow at best, I should think. Then again, considering that this referee has been handing out bookings as though he is a travel agent, Behrami should have known better.
34 min - Beasejour wins a free-kick, not far from the corner flag. The delivery is good from Fernandez, but it goes past everyone and is eventually cleared.
37 min - It's all Chile now, but credit to the Swiss as they have dealt well with every cross and not allowed the South Americans to create many clear chances.
40 min - What a chance! A great ball in from Beausejour from the left finds Sanchez, who chests it down and then hits a volley which is straight at the keeper.
42 min - The Swiss make a substitution - Tranquillo Barnetta comes on for Alexander Frei, a tactical change after the sending off. Meanwhile Chile enjoy a decent period of possession, but the Swiss are throwing themselves at everything, determined not to concede.
43 min - Barnetta's first task is to swing in a free-kick, which is headed away as far as Nkufo, who shoots well wide.
45 min - Chile are playing with much pace but not too much direction. Sanchez receives the ball after Beausejour's cross is headed on by a defender. He attempts to skip past three players, then shoots wide. Rather selfish, that.
HALF TIME - Chile 0-0 Switzerland
And we're off again! Chile have made two substitutions at half time - Mark Gonzalez and Jorge Valdivia have come on for Humberto Suazo and Arturo Vidal.
47 min - Another yellow card after Barnetta tugs back Beausejour.
48 min - Disallowed goal! The free-kick is rolled across to Sanchez whose shot is deflected past Benaglio, but the flag has been raised for offside after the Chilean camp started celebrating wildly.
53 min - Chile are pressing really hard here, but unable to find the crucial final ball through. Valdivia can't quite find Gonzalez at the far post with his low cross.
55 min - What a save from Benaglio! Sanchez was through after stealing it neatly from Ziegler, but the Swiss keeper smothered the ball at the forward's feet. His defenders repayed him bny hoofing the ball into his face and out for a corner.
58 min - The referee is having a field day with the cards here, I think he's getting a bonus for every booking he makes. First a free kick is conceded and he books Inler for a late tackle. Then, before the free kick can be taken, after a scramble in the box, he decides to book Medel and Matias Fernandez, who will miss the next game.
61 min - Chile's free kick is poor, and amounts to nothing. Then the Swiss break quickly with Nkufo striding down the middle, but his pass in the direction of Barnetta is just overhit and collected by Bravo.
64 min - Chile make a substitution, and Matias Fernandez is replaced by Esteban Paredes.
66 min - Switzerland win a free kick in the Chilean half, and the delivery from Ziegler is good, but goes past everyone and just wide of the post.
68 min - Eren Derdiyok replaces Blaise Nkufo for the Swiss. Chile are continuing to attack, but without much real menace, as the Swiss look absolutely determined not to concede. They have just broken a record for the longest time without conceding in a World Cup, the commentator tells us, as their campaign in 2006 included four consecutive clean sheets before that game against Spain last week.
71 min - Switzerland seem to have weathered a terse period of pressure from Chile, whose final cross in has been lacking.
GOAL!!! Chile 1-0 Switzerland (Mark Gonzalez 74')
Finally, the Chileans find a goal, albeit a slightly controversial one. Paredes may or may not have been offside when he was played through and he skipped past the keeper, looked to have taken it too far wide, and then chipped it across the face of goal where Mark Gonzalez headed in.
78 min - Interestingly, it was the 3 substitutes who combined for that goal - Valdivia's pass played in Paredes, who crossed it in for Gonzalez to head home. The Swiss are pressing forward now, but with ten men, are unable to create much. They win a corner, but it is headed clear.
80 min - Isla picks a Swiss defender's pocket but can only chip his shot/cross straight at the keeper.
83 min - Switzerland win a free kick after Valdivia's late challenge, but then concede one as soon as theirs is delivered because of some pushing and shoving in the box. They then win a corner soon after, but it goes clear of the box and falls to Lichtsteiner, whose shot is currently somewhere in the Port Elizabeth skyline.
85 min - The game has finally opened up here, as the Swiss go looking for an equalizer, Chile look well capable of grabbing another on the break. Sanchez is set free on the right by Valdivia, but his cut back to Gonzalez results in an awfully feeble shot, straight at Benaglio as easily saved.
88 min - The Swiss, with 10 men, look incapable of getting an equalizer here, but Chile are doing equally poorly at the other end. Twice, Paredes and Sanchez break quickly, but first the former is flagged for offside, and then, just a few moments later, he is through again but drags his shot wide.
90 min - What a chance for the Swiss. A great series of passes between Ziegler and Inler allows the latter to find Derdiyok, in the box, and in space, but his shot is just wide. There will be 3 added minutes here.
90 + 3 min - The Swiss pass well in Chile's half, but lose it at the edge of the box, and Paredes has an opportunity to break again. His run is good, but his pass goes straight to a Swiss defender, and its all over here...
FULL TIME - Chile 1-0 Switzerland
And Chile manage to sneak the 3 points here. That red card certainly prevented this from being an even contest, and Chile probably deserve the victory, though they certainly are guilty of not taking their numerous chances better. The Swiss defended very capably for 75 minutes, and will be very upset at the referee, but this certainly opens up Group H, as there is a real chance of Spain, the Swiss and Chile all finishing on 6 points. It may well come down to goal difference.
