Much-fancied Germany had Miroslav Klose sent off as they lost 1-0 to Serbia in 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Group D.
Klose was sent off for a second bookable offence on 37 minutes - seconds before Liverpool-bound Milan Jovanovic fired the only goal of the game.
And to cap an afternoon of Port Elizabeth misery for Joachim Low's men, Lukas Podolski missed a second-half penalty.
Germany came into the game on the crest of a wave after that impressive 4-0 demolition of Australia last Sunday.
But their hopes of victory were dashed by two first-half bookings for that man Klose.
First he clipped the heels of Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic on 12 minutes, and on 37 repeated the trick by doing likewise to Dejan Stankovic.
Card-happy Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco needed no invitation, dismissing Klose to German astonishment.
Seconds later the misery for Low's team was compounded when they went behind as the excellent Milos Krasic crossed to the back post and Birmingham-bound Nikola Zigic nodded down for Jovanovic to volley home from close range.
Germany almost drew level just before the break as Sami Khedira blasted a right-foot volley against the Serbia bar.
Germany came out for the second half with renewed vigour despite being a man down.
And they had three glorious chances to level up in a five-minute spell just before the hour.
Twice Mesut Ozil superbly played in Podolski but first he dragged his shot wide and then fired into the side netting.
The best chance of all though came from the spot when Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic waved an arm at a cross and the refereed adjudged he'd handled.
But Podolski's penalty was poor and Stojkovic made a regulation save low to his left.
That appeared to be a killer blow for the Germans as they tired in the closing stages.
And Jovanovic with a shot against the post and Zigic with a header against the bar both went close to increasing the margin of victory for Serbia.
