Liow Yi Yang rates the players in Italy's 3-2 defeat to Slovakia which condemns the defending champions to an early exit from the tournament.
Italy
Federico Marchetti - 6
Was left exposed by a shambolic defence and could do little with the goals.
Gianluca Zambrotta - 5
I did not see the real Zambrotta.
Fabio Cannavaro - 4
He must be terribly disappointed with his performance tonight and his nation's early exit. Despite that, Cannavaro's a true legend.
Giorgio Chiellini - 3
Shocking performance from Chiellini tonight, he was at fault for Vittek's goals and was caught out of position many times. He's an important player but was a letdown for his team.
Domenico Criscito - 5
Criscito struggled to get forward and was replaced by Maggio at the break.
Gennaro Gattuso - 6
Tenacious in the middle of the park in the first half before he was sacrificed for the more forward thinking Quagliarella.
Daniele de Rossi - 5
Sat too deep in midfield and it was his sloppy pass that led to Slovakia's first goal. He was below par, I expected more from Italy's key man.
Ricardo Montolivo - 4
He was poor in possession and seemed very tentative. Not good enough a replacement for Pirlo.
Simone Pepe - 4
Pepe struggled to create anything and was not helped by a congested midfield and tight Slovakian defence. He contrived to miss a glorious opportunity in the dying seconds to put Italy level. Should have buried that chance.
Antonio di Natale - 6
He grabbed a goal for his team but missed good openings throughout.
Vincenzo Iaquinta - 4
Disappointing performance from the lone striker as he wasted chances and seemed on a different wavelength from his teammates at times.
Substitutes
Christian Maggio (on 45' for Criscito) - 5
Failed to provide cover for his central defenders.
Fabio Quagliarella (on 45' for Gattuso) - 7
Looked tireless after coming on and was rewarded with one of the goals of the tournament, a finely weighted chip over the despairing Mucha. Inconsolable at the final whistle.
Andrea Pirlo (on 56' for Montolivo) - 5.5
Italy missed him sorely throughout this tournament. He came on and gave his teammate's more confidence. Unfortunately, he was unable to influence and dictate play.
Slovakia
Jan Mucha - 6
Could have done better for Quagliarella's goal but it was pure class from the Italian. Sound performance otherwise.
Peter Pekarik - 7.5
Played without fear as he defended well and also provided support down the right channel.
Martin Skrtel - 7
Almost scored an own goal in the first half but came to his side's rescue with a vital goal line block to deny the Italians a certain goal. Important contribution from the Liverpool defender.
Jan Durica - 7
Impeccable at the back. Shut out the Italians
Radoslav Zabavnik - 8
Impressive stuff from Zabavnik who made some absolutely vital interceptions to keep the opposition at bay.
Marek Hamsik - 7
Made dangerous runs and created space for his team. Not his best performance but he won't care!
Zdeno Strba - 8
Almost scored with a fine long ranged effort in the first half. Strba was neat in midfield and was such a big figure for his side. He soldiered on despite suffering a deep gash on his knee from Gattuso's tackle.
Juraj Kucka - 7
Provided the assist for Vittek's first goal.
Miroslav Stoch - 6
Worked hard for his team and could easily have gotten a goal if he had not wasted good openings.
Robert Vittek - 9
2 goal hero for his nation, he finished clinically. Held the ball up well and was a nuisance for a poor Italian defence.
Erik Jendrisek - 5
I did not see much of Jendrisek, it was pretty much Vittek all the way. Sestak might have been a better option. But hey, who's complaining!
Substitutes
Kamil Kopunek (on 86' for Strba) - 7
Scored with his first touch with a lovely chip over Marchetti. He got the vital goal for his team. Good contribution from the substitute.
Stanislav Sestak (on 90' for Vittek)
Little time to impress.
Martin Petras (on 90' for Jendrisek)
Little time to impress.
