Twin suicide bombs at Shah Ghazi’s shrine leave 7 dead

Image
KARACHI: Seven people including two children were killed and over 65 others injured when two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine in Clifton, official sources said here Thursday. Two heads, believed to be of the bombers aged between 14 and 16 years, have been recovered from the blasts site where severed limbs and human flesh littered the ground, sources said. Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza who arrived at the scene immediately after the incident, said: “I think the two heads recovered from the blasts site must be of the suicide bombers.”   Head of Emergency, Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Dr. Seemi Jamali put the number of injured at 60. A large number of poor and deserving people as well as others gather at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine everyday and the number grows manifold, particularly, on Thursday.   The incident occurred on a day when President Asif Ali Zardari is in the metropolis. The shine is located not far from

Rajinikant makes Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand & his Bollywood friends proud

In a rarest of rare occasion, the Asian superstar Rajini came to Bollywood yesterday and arranged special screenings for his favourites. The guest list included the legends and newcomers right from the evergreen Dev Sahab to the Bachchans, the Kapoors, the Khans, the Chopras - you name it and the venue had it.   Needless to add, everybody enjoyed the flick and the best comment came from Devsaheb who said, “I wish I could run as fast as Rajni’.” Such is the captivating effect of the superstar on his fans and when the superstar was asked to comment on the huge success of his film, the humble Rajnikant thanked the team of ‘Robot’ and his fans in Tamil Nadu, India and abroad.   We all say that there’s nothing Rajni can’t do and it proved in ‘Robot’…. In today’s world of marketing, Bollywood superstars go all out... They are seen and heard everywhere talking about their film but not in case of a Rajni film... Once the first look, poster of the film is out, the movie ge

After 'Dabangg', Salman readies for 'Ready'

Image
It was after three weeks of no new releases in Bollywood when 'Anjaana Anjaani' and 'Robot' finally brought some spark back at the box office last weekend. However, no new release prior to these two films meant that 'Dabangg' had a clear ground for making its moolah. All of this meant that the 'Dabangg' juggernaut continued to roll for many more days as third week was pretty impressive too with over 15 crores coming in. This resulted in 130 crores plus collections for this Salman Khan starrer which are tremendous by any standards. Though the film won't quite touch the 150 crore mark now, mainly because 'Anjaana Anjaani' has done quite well and there are multiple releases all through October, 'Dabangg' has still done at least double the theatrical business that one would have expected till a day before its release. Says a trade expert, "Even for producer Arbaaz Khan, the collections could well be way beyond

"Akshay didn't have any issues with Salman" - Farah

Image
It was four years back when Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan had come together on the big screen. The film was 'Jaan-E-Mann' where the two were seen as parallel leads. Though the two never shared screen space together post that, Farah Khan has made that possible in her upcoming film 'Tees Maar Khan' where Salman Khan would be making a special appearance by featuring in the 'item qawalli' number 'Walla Walla'. Considering the fact that Akshay is the central protagonist in the film which has Katrina Kaif as the central attraction, one wonders if he was cool with another actor stepping in for a special song in the film. After all he is a superstar in his own right and it can be expected for him to have issues with a decision like this. "On the contrary when I shared the idea with Akshay, he was game for it. He had a big smile on his face when I said that the song would feature the two of them along with Katrina", Farah quashes

Preity Zinta to address the Oxford Union

Image
The best of East and West will meet in the UK by the end of this month as one of India's hottest talents addresses the Oxford Union, the world's most prestigious debating society. One of Indian cinema's leading ladies and the star of over 30 films, Preity Zinta will answer questions from Oxford students on her experience of being a part of the world's largest film industry and an iconic figure in a male-dominated business. Preity Zinta is considered as a role model to many who aspire to achieve success through hard work and honesty. Zinta is the latest in a long list of prominent speakers to have visited the Oxford Union, which has also hosted former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, as well as current Prime Minister David Cameron, US Presidents Reagan and Nixon, the Dalai Lama, Stephen Hawking and Mother Teresa. The Union is no stranger to the world of entertainment either, claiming Michael Jackson, Natalie Portman, Pierce Brosnan, Clint Eastwood and Marti

Deepika Padukone in love?

Image
Deepika is not denying love for Siddharth Mallya. But she isn't admitting it either. Tell her about the rumours and she laughs, "We all know how true such rumours are. I'm very uncomfortable talking about it. Let the press write and say what it has to. I'm not saying anything." So did Siddharth lose weight on svelte Deepika's say-so? Speaking of Sid's size, Deepika sighs, "Let me put it this way. If someone decides to lose that much weight the willpower has to come from within, and not from someone else. Beyond that, I wouldn't know why he lost so much weight. I never had to lose so much weight." She opens up when talking about her career. At the moment it's all very hush-hush. But here's the inside information. A very sensitive and passionate filmmaker known for his epic vision and grand spectacles is planning to remake Shakti Samanta's 1971 classic Amar Prem . The director will cast Deepika Padukone in Sharmila Ta

Resul Pookutty to file RTI against multiplexes for poor sound & picture quality

Image
On Monday evening, Rajinikanth's warm and unparalleled gesture of bringing Robot to Mumbai personally for a special screening before his Bollywood friends, culminated in a horrendous mess with the sound being completely disrupted in the 7th reel, leading to a long and embarrassing and unscheduled break just before the crucial climax of the film. The screening, it might be mentioned was, was leading man Rajinikanth and director Shankar's belated but critical attempt to familiarize Bollywood's who's-who with Robot which had already swept the nation. Its disruption has hurt the film's crew in both emotional and more practical ways. And now heads will roll. The team behind Robot plans to sue the chain of theatres and also approach the government to specify quality-control methods to check sound systems in the multiplexes of Mumbai. Speaking about the evening's nightmarish, fiasco Robot's bitterly disappointed enraged and now redre

Action Replayy Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS There are good expectations from the music of Action Replayy . After all more often than not, music of Vipul Shah has been popular with the masses. Though London Dreams couldn't find a wider audience, music of Namastey London, Waqt as well as Aankhen had worked with the audience. Even otherwise, his production Singh Is Kinng boasted of chartbuster music. With Pritam at the helm of affairs who pairs up with his lyricist partner Irshad Kamil all over again, you do expect a good soundtrack. However, you are not quite sure about the genre it would belong to. Whether the music would turn out to be out and out romantic or would it have a strong element of fun to it? Let's find that out. MUSIC What catches your attention even before you play on the album is the sheer number of songs that have been included in Action Replayy . Really, after the likes of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani or a Love Aaj Kal [incidentally both of them have Pritam as a composer],

332 Hindi Movie Preview

Image
What happens when a mislead youth does a stupid crime just to prove his point? What are the repercussions on the general public and people connected to him? How does our Government tackle this issue and what does it do to prevent its reoccurrence? 332 is not an answer to the above issues but at least it puts ones mind into thinking...and that is what happens in the film too. 332 is about the North Indian v/s Mumbaikars issue which happened in Mumbai. Several guys were beaten on Kalyan railway station and it led to various incidents all over Mumbai. Rickshaws and taxis were broken down and all Mumbaikars wanting the UPites to be driven out of Mumbai. This forms just a backdrop of our story. 332 is set in various parts of our country. Mumbai, Bihar, Benaras. Mumbai, a city which is a cultural mix of every nationality. The story begins when a young guy Rahul Raj hijacks a Bus No.332 plied between Andheri & Kurla. From that poin

Check Out: Tusshar and Amrita Rao shoot for Love U...Mr. Kalakaar in Ooty

Image
By now its common knowledge that Tusshar Kapoor and Amrita Rao are the stars of Rajshri Productions Pvt. Ltd.'s next venture titled Love U...Mr.Kalakaar . The film is directed by debutant S. Manasvi, who has also penned the story, screenplay and dialogues. The cast and crew recently finished a schedule of the film in the picturesque town of Ooty and we bring you a sneak peek of the same. Love U...Mr.Kalakaar is about two individuals: Sahil (Tusshar) is a cartoonist & artist who derives his inspiration from emotions that come from the sky, from the earth, a scrap of paper, a passing shape or even a spider's web. Meanwhile Ritu (Amrita Rao) is a management trainee, whose world revolves around debits, credits, turnovers, profits, and deadlines. What happens when Ritu falls in love with Sahil forms the crux of the story. The film is almost 70% complete and is expected to release in Feb 2011.

"Crook is not going to find any solution to a social problem" - Emraan Hashmi

Image
There are a bunch of grown up men (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan) fighting it out for a place at the top. Then there are the current set of boys (Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham, Imran Khan, Neil Nitin Mukesh) who are getting their credentials in place to be Generation Next superstars. And then there is Emraan Hashmi who has been enjoying his own loyal audience over the last seven years. Joginder Tuteja catches up with the young man who has been going through a very good phase in his career, especially post Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai which has turned out to be his biggest grosser till date and is still running at a few centres. Let me begin with a clichéd question. With Crook , you are coming up with your annual Bhatt starrer. Really, you seem to be pretty content signing most of your films with them. Come on, how can you say that? I think people should have stopped asking me this question a y

"Having LP of his own is big moment for Rahman" - Abbas Tyrewala

Image
A R Rahman who grew up listening to his father, a musician, listening to film songs on long-playing (LP) records, is touched to the core to have his music on an LP for the first time in his career. Rahman's music score in Jhootha Hi Sahi is being issued on a long-playing record. While Rahman remains off-press until the Common Wealth games are over, the Jhootha Hi Sahi director Abbas Tyrewala says, "When Rahman heard about his music on vinyl he couldn't stop smiling. As a child he used to see his father's eyes light up each time he would listen to his precious LPs. Having an LP of his own is a big moment for Rahman." Vinyl, according to the music company Saregama, is coming back in vogue. Says the Managing Director of Saregama, Apurv Nagpal, "I think vinyl long-playing records are making a subtle comeback. Go into any leading music store, and you'll see a quiet stack of long-playing records in a corner." Not only is Jhootha Hi

Pritam - The fifth gear in Action Replayy

Image
Time and again one sees director and composer turning out to be a pair, especially so when the 'jodi' ends up delivering chartbuster tracks in a row. In the current generation, Rajkumar Hirani has stuck to Shantanu Moitra, Siddharth Anand can't dream of a soundtrack without Vishal-Shekhar, same holds true for Sujoy Ghosh-Vishal-Shekhar as well, Karan Johar's favorites were Jatin-Lalit before they split and he moved on to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Farhan Akhtar and Sajid Khan haven't looked beyond the trio, Rohit Shetty too started off with Vishal-Shekhar but now swears by Pritam while Rakesh Roshan has been inseparable from Rajesh Roshan for obvious reasons. However, in case of Vipul Shah, it is different. That's because his is one of the rare instance of a director trying out a different composer in each of his films and that too for five outings in a row. After working with Jatin Lalit/Aadesh Srivastava [ Aankhen ], Anu Malik [Waqt], Himesh Reshammi

Check Out: Sonam Kapoor shoots for Electrolux campaign Click here to add this article to My Clips

Image
After her last two films, I Hate LUV Storys and Aisha , Sonam Kapoor is being seen here, there and everywhere. While she has already made it to the cover page of most of the leading magazines (thanks to her impeccable fashion sense), she is now also bagging some plum endorsement projects. Only recently we informed you of Sonam being signed as the brand ambassador for Electrolux, the house appliances major. The actress in fact even shot a campaign for this brand yesterday and going by these pics posted by her on Twitter, she is indeed looking gorgeous. Sonam's beauty in these pics has been captured to perfection by ace lens-man Suresh Natrajan who was helming the shoot. And while the tagline of Electrolux says, 'Thinking of You', we are sure that after this campaign a lot of guys would be only 'thinking of Sonam'.

Check out: Rajinikanth meets Balasaheb Thackeray

Image
A little bit of trivia, do you know what Rajinikanth's real name is? It's Shivajirao Gaikwad. The star of Endhiran (Robot ) may have made it big in Tamil cinema but at heart he will always be a sincere Maharashtrian. No wonder then that when he was in town promoting his film Robot , he did not lose out on an opportunity to meet Shiv Sena Chief Balasahab Thackeray and seek his blessings. Even though he was in Mumbai for only two days and was in the midst of a special screening of his film organised for the cream de la crème of Bollywood, Rajini made sure he spent quality time with the chief. To Rajini, Thackeray is nothing less than a God and holds in high esteem. During his meet with Thackeray, Rajini also expressed his deep desire to work in Marathi cinema. Well, considering his strike rate with the Tamil industry, Marathi cinema will surely get the much needed boost with Rajini's support.

'Topless scene' gets Crook 'A' certificate from censor board

Image
Last week we saw a tussle between the censor board and the makers of the film Aakrosh which is based on honour killings, with the censors requesting for approximately 30 cuts within the film. And now it's producer Mahesh Bhatt, who was told by Censor Board that if he wanted a U/A certificate for his film Crook , he would have to edit out a scene with a topless firang actress in the film. Alternatively, he could keep the scene and have his film get an 'A' certificate. Mahesh choose 'A'. Though the director of the film, Mohit Suri, tried to convince him otherwise, Bhatt insisted that the film be released as 'Adults Only'. Last week saw a major confrontation at the Censor screening of Crook , which was attended by Mohit Suri and Mukesh Bhatt. An actress called Shella Alan has performed the topless scene in question, which was shot in Australia. A source close to Bhatts says, "In the film, Emraan Hashmi gets drunk and passes out in Shell

Check out: Katrina Kaif pays tribute to Meena Kumari in Tees Maar Khan

Image
Decades ago, the timeless Meena Kumari had audiences mesmerized every time she gazed the screen with her golden presence. With Katrina Kaif on board, Farah Khan thought it was only apt to recreate the 'Meena Kumari magic/effect' onscreen in her forthcoming film Tees Maar Khan . Katrina's 'Pakeezah' look in the 'qawalli' number in the film is a tribute to the yesteryear's legendary actress. States director Farah Khan, "Katrina's look has been modelled on Pakeezah .While Akshay and Salman can be expected to have a lot of fun with this track, it (actually) belongs to Katrina, as she is going to surprise the audience." The 'qawalli' track titled ' Wallah Re Wallah ' will has a complete local Mumbaiya feel to it and will be a complete foot-tapper. Tees Maar Khan , which stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, releases on 24th December 2010.

Sajid Khan speaks about his forthcoming films and more

Image
After the success of his films Heyy Babyy and Housefull , Sajid Khan has become one of the most sought after filmmakers in Bollywood. So, when Apnadesi  spoke to him, it wasn't a surprise that he was in the middle of his busy schedule, as he is preparing for his next ventures (you heard it right, its not 'venture', but 'ventures'!). Speaking about his future projects, Sajid says, "I am doing two films, but not simultaneously. The script of the film that I am doing for Vashu Bhagnani is almost ready. It's basically an action revenge drama and not a comedy. It's a proper 'entertainer', the way I would like to call it as." And when we asked him about the much talked about news of Ranbir Kapoor playing the lead in the film, Sajid simply denied the news. Talking about his second project, Sajid said, "My second project is for Sajid Nadiadwala, which is on the lines of Housefull . It's got a similar cast, same nature and
