The Dancing with the Stars Semifinals are over and Chelsea Kane & Mark Ballas are in the lead with 73, thanks to a bonus of 15 points from the winner take all cha cha. Fans are crying foul, as Ralph Macchio danced well but was scored abominably by the judges. Ralph is at the bottom with 48. Only power voting can save Ralph now, and we knew this already. The judges were ridiculous tonight; therefore, I am disbanding with their comments in favor of my own.
Let’s start with some fun before we get to the dances. Some of the more interesting moments in the video packages: Maks finally broke Kirstie: I didn’t think she could be broken, but he did it, getting her so frustrated she actually cried. Mark wanted Chelsea to get pissed to enhance her tango, but ended up getting pissed at her. I wonder if he ever spoke to Bristol that way? Karina urged Ralph to wear butt padding for their salsa, and it looked like they both wore it. Hines’ rehearsal package showed the moment when Kym was injured. The video is below. This was really hard to watch, and host Tom Bergeron warned us ahead of time. Kym blamed her injury on her overzealous desire to do “tricks” and take risks in their performances. Let's get to the outcome of the Dancing with the Stars semifinal rounds:
Round 1
Hines & Kym’s Argentine tango: Kym didn’t use the brace, and her dancing was flawless. You would never know she was injured. Hines held her tightly and his fear was evident. Their dance brought them both to tears at the end. Carrie Ann choked up as well. They were rewarded with all 10s, the first perfect score of 30 in the season.
Chelsea & Mark’s Argentine tango: Cute as a button Chelsea gave a clean and precise tango, but for me there was just some lack of emotion there. Score: 28
Kirstie & Maks’ Viennese waltz: Kirstie was flawless and graceful, even if Bruno compared her to a sailing ship. But he meant it nicely. Score: 27
Ralph & Karina’s Argentine tango: Hands down awesome. Ralph really took control of the dance and the character, and he was on point and in my view, perfect. Here’s where the judges went wack though. Score: 25
Round 2
Hines & Kym’s salsa: A very cheeky and fun salsa, with Kym’s neck sailing through those head wraps effortlessly. Hines nailed every move of course. Once again, perfect Score: 30
Chelsea & Mark’s rumba: A very passionate and perfectly executed rumba…as it should be; Mark’s parents excelled in the rumba in their heyday. Score: 30
Kirstie &Maks’s paso doble: This was pretty darn fabulous. Kirstie was so on fire, I don’t know how Maks could contain her. With the way the judges carried on tonight, no surprise they were underscored. Score: 27
Ralph & Karina’s salsa: I knew there would be trouble when I saw their costume. Lacey Schwimmer and Kyle Massey did this retro 70s look in Season 11 and it bombed with Len. Karina in a leopard costume and Ralph as a pimp did not go over well. As much as I wanted them to do well, the choreography just wasn’t up to Karina’s usual par. Bruno may be getting a call from the network brass though, since he called Karina another word for “cat.’ She was not pleased. “Wow…how classy…wow” was all she could say as she rolled her eyes. Score: 23
Winner take all cha cha
Here’s where the typical Dancing with the Stars controversy continues. The 1st place couple and 4th place couple are pitted against each other, so you have the lowest scorer up against the highest. That’s so stupid. That reinforces the belief that they want Ralph out. And the two in the middle against each other? What is the rationale for that? That’s so stupid. I can’t say it enough.
All the chas chas were very good though, but it was clear who were the judges’ favorites. Hines beat out Ralph and Chelsea beat out Kirstie. That left Hines versus Chelsea. After Brooke Burke bungled the coin toss for the dance order, Hines & Kym went first, then Chelsea & Mark. And Chelsea & Mark took it. All the judges were unanimous in each round, by the way.
Semifinals Leaderboard:
Chelsea & Mark 73 Definitely Safe
Hines & Kim 60 Definitely Safe
Kirstie & Maks 54 Definitely Safe
Ralph & Karina 48 Most Likely to be Eliminated
So, unless the power voting is really powerful, Ralph & Karina will likely not make it to next week’s finals. Everyone left it all on the floor, and it’s all up to the fans now. Tuesday night’s warm up to the Results Show will be Dancing with the Stars Live: Freestyle Special at 8 p.m. Two former champions, Apolo Ohno (Season 4), and Donnie Osmond (Season 9), and finalist Warren Sapp (Season 7) will provide commentary on their freestyle routines. Season 2 winners Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke will perform their fan favorite freestyle, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy." The Results Show begins at 9 p.m. with musical performances by Stevie Nicks and Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo and Nayer. Pro dances by Tony Dovolani, Cheryl Burke, Anna Trebuynskay, Chelsie Hightower and Lacey Schwimmer are also on tap.
