There has been talk recently about the possible return of Sex and the City to the small screen and now it looks like it might happen, but not to HBO and not with Sarah Jessica Parker. Instead
Deadline is reporting that the CW are looking to develop Candace Bushnell's book The Carrie Diaries.
The Carrie Diaries is set in the 1980s and is a prequel to Sex and the City. It shows what Carrie Bradshaw was like at school and follows her to Manhattan and her first internship. Samantha Jones is the only other character of the four women to make an appearance in the novel, but it wouldn't be surprising if some of the other recurring SATC players did make an appearance if this adaptation goes ahead.
HBO actually has the rights to The Carrie Diaries but really doesn't seem to be the right fit for this version of Carrie. However there is a Time Warner relationship with both HBO and the CW, and considering the CW's demographic it looks like the ideal home if this series was to get the green light. A HBO representative did confirm that:
"Discussions are underway for The Carrie Diaries, Candace Bushnell’s book about Carrie Bradshaw’s high school years, to find a home as a potential television series."
This is still early in the production process but the CW does seem like the perfect place for this prequel, particularly if Gossip Girl was to end any time soon. With this also in mind Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are being looked at to executive produce this adaptation alongside novelist Candace Bushell. The pair have had one attempt at an 80s teen show fail; the Gossip Girl prequel for Lilly that ended up as a single episode in season 2 of Gossip Girl ("Valley Girls").
The creative team from SATC don't seem to be involved which includes Darren Star and Michael Patrick King. King was quite vehement about his non-involvement when asked about the prequel at the 2 Broke Girls TCA panel saying:
"I'm not working on any Sex and the City prequel at all. I haven't read Candace’s Bushnell's books. My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33 and I took her to 43 - I don’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents are. The idea of going backward, making her less evolved, is something that I can’t even imagine doing. I have no connection to the prequel."
If this prequel does get the go ahead the role of Carrie will be much coveted, even with the pressure of trying to escape from the very big shadow cast by Sarah Jessica Parker and her fashion icon status. Back in 2008
Candace Bushnell suggested Miley Cyrus for the part, would she be a candidate now? Who do you think would be right for the part? Or do you think that the project sounds like a bad idea? Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below.
