Lenovo IdeaPad U300S Ultrabook struts by the FCC

Lenovo’s IdeaPad U300S Ultrabook has just passed through the FCC today in preparation for a launch next month. The super-slim laptop, first unveiled at IFA 2011 last week, is eager to take on the MacBook Air with a thinner and lighter physique while still packing in powerful performance.

We got a bit of hands-on time with the Lenovo IdeaPad U300S and it is looking rather nice with an all-aluminum chassis, weighing just 2.2 pounds and measuring 0.6-inches thin. It has a 13.3-inch 16:9 widescreen display along with full-sized ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI, and a large ventilation grille to work with Intel’s Advanced Cooling Technology. Inside, it boasts Intel’s latest Core i7 processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, and up to 256GB SSD.

Additionally, the U300S features a battery life of up to 8 hours with the ability to charge up to 50% in only 30 minutes. And it touts a cold boot-up in just 10 seconds. The laptop is expected to be available in two colors of Graphite Gray and Clementine Orange and is priced starting at $1195.

  1. Lenovo doesn't have the most recognisable consumer PC business, but the tone of its press conference at IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany, made it clear that the company has serious aims at cracking the consumer market.

This will likely be helped by its new IdeaPad U300s, the company’s Ultrabook, introduced during the event.

Ultrabooks by definition are going to be thin, light, powerful and relatively affordable, looking to take a bite out of Apple’s MacBook Air. The U300s is crafted as a premium notebook, with a robust aluminium shell and an anodised finish, so it certainly looks and feels the part.

  2. It sure is going to be a busy few months of thin and light laptops. In addition to the new Toshiba Z830 Series ultrabook, Lenovo's announcing its very own IdeaPad U300s Intel-approved ultrabook as well as two additional thin notebooks — the 13.3-inch U300 and 14-inch U400. It's a lot of Intel Core processors wrapped in sandblasted aluminum cases, so hit the break for the details on all three systems as well as some in-depth impressions / hands-on video of the U300s.

  3. I got to spend a couple of minutes with the U300s earlier this week and I almost forgot how much I missed the book style design and soft feel of the brownish aluminum (there will be a clementine orange as well). It's one incredibly solid feeling laptop and the curved keyboard is one of the best out there for touch typists. It is very saddening that the panel isn't backlit, however, Lenovo may make up for it with the smooth feel of the single-button glass touchpad. The U300s will hit in October and start at $1,195.
