In a move that's sure to shake Supernatural's fan community, TVLine is reporting that Misha Collins won't be a series regular on the CW's hit drama when the show returns for a seventh season in the fall. Weird, considering his character (now corrupted by the souls of purgatory) is the "new, better God," isn't it?
Yes, Supernatural's season finale back in May left us with almost a certainty that there would be more Castiel. After all, he took us into the cliffhanger of the episode, telling Sam, Dean, and Bobby to swear loyalty to him or face death. Shouldn't he be a massive player next season? Well, not exactly, says executive producer Sera Gamble: “When it comes to Supernatural, our philosophy is that everyone moves in and out and weaves in and out of the story, obviously with the exception of Sam and Dean. We love Misha. We love and adore the character of Castiel. His character developed to this extent and went in this unexpected direction because we were so inspired by him.”
And though Gamble says that they'll be exploring Cas's transformation next season, there's going to be a "big change."
“We are interested in what happens in the purview of the boys," Gamble says. "We feel that in terms of what we can accomplish, the scope of the show, our storyline is best accomplished where the Impala can go.”
Castiel will return in the season seven opener this fall, but beyond that it's impossible to tell; knowing his involvement beyond that will “[give] away a lot about the premiere."
Let's hope they don't kill everyone's favorite newly crowned deity -- but it's probably best that he loses those souls from purgatory. You know, to make him nicer. And so he doesn't destroy the Winchester brothers.
Supernatural's seventh season will premiere in September. Keep checking into TVOvermind for more scoop on the Winchester boys.
