"Patiala House is a story about joint families" - Nikhil Advani

Image
After the not so impressive Chandni Chowk To China , the duo of Nikhil Advani and Akshay Kumar are once again coming together with Patiala House . According to Nikhil, Patiala House has been inspired by real life instances. Patiala House , which stars Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma along with the evergreen jodi of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, tells the story of a joint family set in South hall, London. Patiala House's patriarch is Gurkreeat Singh Kalon (Rishi Kapoor) who rules and runs his family life just like a prime minister would run a government. He is a strict disciplinarian whose authority and rules are not questioned by anybody in Patiala House. Every addition in the family; be it a cousin or a cousin's cousin all get accommodated in Patiala House and every new wedding results in the house and family getting bigger and bigger. Speaking about this film based on a joint family, Nikhil Advani says, "Our story is universal in spirit as it is a story about all

"The characters in APKGK are serious but audiences will see them in a funny way" - Ranbir

Image
Most of his movies, be it Saawariya, Wake Up Sid or his Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani which releases tomorrow worldwide, hardly need the coverage as he's one of the few stars whose name all but guarantees a strong opening weekend: Ranbir Kapoor . He has got everything synonymous to the Pali Hill boys of Bandra and being one himself, he quotes, "Pali Hill boys rock". With his soulful dark eyes and his chiselled good looks, he cuts a very dashing image as he resumes the sexiness he possesses to charm the opposite sex in APKGK . Let's face it; Ranbir Kapoor's face is now being stapled over the walls of teenage girls across India. They are falling in love with him; some girls want to get married to him while the others want to share their joys and sorrows with him. Some are looking for the exact qualities of Ranbir in her man while some think he is a part of their history lessons. Believe it or not, Ranbir Kapoor is a part of Indian culture now, and if that's an

The MAMI Diaries

It's a Mumbai I have never seen, as filmmakers and enthusiasts from nooks and crannies of India converge onto screens across Mumbai for the 11th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. What started as a star-studded, red-carpet affair has emerged, over the last week, as a cornucopia of some excellent Indian & world cinema, animated cinematic conversations, film premieres and cocktails and some serious celebrity spotting. I can't show the movies, but if you missed all the action, here's a lowdown of the 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF): The festival started on a high note with Shashi Kapoor receiving, in person, the life-time achievement award conferred by MAMI. Tinsel town's most famous faces came out in large numbers for the Indian premiere of Steven Soderberg's The Informant , and milled around when the opening ceremony started late. Besides showcasing the best and latest of world cinema, MFF provided a platform to regional Indian cinema, notably two Konkani films - AB Co

Javed Akhtar on fatwa against Vande Mataram

Image
''This controversy is old and obsolete. Vande Mataram is part of Bankimchandra Chatterjee's novel Anand Math . All the villains in this novel are Muslims. Ultimately, the Muslims lose and the novelist feels happy that the Britishers have come to save us from these so-called 'barbaric' Muslims. This is the song of the militant sadhus in this novel. There were two stanzas of strong religiosity in this song. When talks arose of making Vande Mataram a national anthem, it was pointed out by rational elements that the novel was anti-Muslim. The Congress decided to take out the two rabidly religious stanzas and the rest of the song was retained. The controversy ended there. What is this new resistance? The objection is redundant. You don't want to sing Vande Mataram? Don't! Who is forcing you? I sing it. I don't see it as objectionable. If you do, don't sing it. Why do you insist on bringing such irrelevant matters centre stage? It's a non-issue

"Not many actors and stars are capable of being versatile" - Ajay Devgn

Image
He may not be fighting the battle of being one of the contenders for the Top-5 actors that we have in the industry today. Still, Ajay Devgn has made a definite place for himself with two decades of hard work and a line up of films that could make majority of actors nervous. Starting off his career as an action hero with multiple hits like Phool Aur Kaante, Jigar, Divyashakti and Vijaypath , Ajay is today known as one of the few versatile actors that we have in the industry today. "Yes, in a way I am lucky that I can do action, comedy, drama or an emotional film. This is what keeps me going. Working in a similar genre for years can't really work for you all the time. You have to bring in a change in your approach towards making films and this is what I strive for. I know for sure that not many actors and stars are capable of being versatile today. This way, I am blessed", says Ajay whose London Dreams has seen a steady progress at the box office ever since it's open

"No John, no Blue 2, no Aerial yet" - Anthony D'Souza

Image
This has becomes a trend of sorts. No sooner does a film hit the screens or is ready for release, stories start floating around how its maker is ready with the plans of making his next. It may be mere speculation, a PR plug or a confirmed report but the fact that it does get the film (which is about to get released) noticed. In certain instances a filmmaker knows the origin of the news. However, there also have been cases where he himself is flabbergasted with such information floating around. What may just turn be a thought over a mug of coffee is elevated to the scale of being confirmed to such an extent that it appears as if the film would get on floors within a week of the news making headlines. Diwali releases went through the same syndrome with glowing announcements around the next projects of Rohit Shetty ( All The Best ) and Prem Soni ( Main Aurr Mrs Khanna ). While Rohit was said to be caught in a dilemma of choosing his next film between the sequel to Golmaal and All The B

"Everything went wrong with LD but then it all fell in place" - Vipul Shah

Image
London Dreams has released and found good appreciation coming its way. After a not-so-thunderous start, the film settled down over the weekend, just as was the case with Ajay Devgn's last release All The Best and very unlike Salman Khan's Main Aurr Mrs Khanna that only fell further down with every passing show. While Vipul Shah is happy that his film has been received well by critics who matter, he is happier that audiences have given a big thumbs-up to the film. "That's what the bottom line is all about", says an exhausted Vipul who has horror stories to tell about the pains he had to go through en route to the Friday release of the film, "Look at readers comments all over the internet. They have their own tale to tell. Really, after getting feedback from them and seeing soaring collections on every passing day, I don't really have much to say in defence of London Dreams ." Meanwhile, he is flummoxed with the way his London Dreams progressed

Anushka Sharma on shooting for YRF's next in US

Image
It's not Anushka Sharma's beauty that has been getting her attention recently. It's her choice of unique roles and her award winning acting ability that is making tabloids go ga-ga over her. So while the whole of India was celebrating Diwali this year, she was busy acting on the streets of New York for Parmeet Sethi's debut movie produced by Yash Raj Films. The towering beauty is back in Mumbai after a gruelling one month outdoor schedule. But if you thought that all ends here, you've got it wrong. She will be packing her bags to go to Bangkok on November 5 for yet another outdoor schedule along with Shahid Kapoor, Veer Das and Chang, her co-stars in the film. Anushka's warm and accepting personality shines through when you talk to her, and you feel instantly comfortable. Add to that her silly good one liners and you know you're in company. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel had a quick chat wi
