"I know Varun is in safe hands" - David Dhawan

Image
Karan Johar certainly has a way with making people feel extra special. He is doing that not just on his TV shows but also films. On Tuesday, almost two years after  My Name Is Khan , he started shoot for his newest directorial outing  Student of The Year . In order to make it extra special for his lead actor Varun Dhawan, he chose his dad David Dhawan's birthday as the D-Day. Confirms a family friend of Dhawans, "It is a matter of pride for all involved that Karan chose to give them so much respect. Davidji is immensely happy that none other than Karan is launching Varun. And now with Varun facing the camera for the first time on his dad's birthday, it is turning out to be an out and out family affair. Guess Karan is living the adage of 'It's all about loving your family'." For David Dhawan too it was a big moment to see his son turning actor and getting the best launch that he could have dreamt of. However, he kept his birthday celebrations quite simp

Sonam Kapoor features on the cover of The Man

Image
Let's give it to Sonam Kapoor, for making a name for herself in the big, bad world of Bollywood! Being the daughter of the superstar Anil Kapoor is one thing and leaving a mark for talent is another! It is the combination of looks and talent that has got Sonam Kapoor to reach the place where she is today. And it's this Sonam Kapoor who also happens to be the cover girl of this month's edition of The Man. First things first... Sonam happens to be a personified version of an angel, courtesy the oh-so-heavenly snaps that have got featured in this issue. Speaking about her personal life, Sonam says, "My dad used to call me a 'giraffe' because I was tall and thin. I put on weight while I was in boarding school like anyone else. It was easy for me to lose it, 80 percent of losing weight is what you eat. Exercise matters, but at the end of the day, you are what you eat." That she is a style icon is known by one and all. Talking about clothes, she says, &quo

Mausam to have innovative handwritten press kit

Image
Strange are the ways of Bollywood. To make the film known, you can always trust the current blend of filmmakers and their marketing strategies. One such film is Pankaj Kapur's  Mausam , a film that comes straight from the heart! The film has got many USPs bundled into one. On one hand, while the film has the father-son duo of Pankaj Kapur and Shahid working for the first time, on the other hand, even the film's press kit is unique in itself. It is for the first time ever that a Bollywood film is coming out with a handwritten press kit. Since,  Mausam  is a film for which all three, the director and both actors have worked extremely hard and have given two years of their lives, the film's makers came up with an innovative idea that everyone should write their personal journey and encapsulate their favorite moments from the film. Insiders say that, Sonam and Shahid have both beautifully written about their journey for this press kit. Talking about this innovative press

Salman plays Bodyguard to his young fan

Image
Salman Khan is one actor who surely knows how to win hearts. Apparently, the  Dabangg  star, while shooting for  Bodyguard   had a young kid waiting for him for 8 long hours with a special request. The small kid's innocent wish was that Salman should act like his bodyguard while he takes him on a bike ride, wherein the bike was actually a toy bike that runs on battery. The kid waited for hours to meet his favourite superstar Salman and ultimately managed to meet the star and expressed his wish. Sources from the sets revealed that the little kid learned that Salman was shooting for a film in the vicinity and thus he came on his bike along with his parents to meet his favourite actor. This was not all; the child who hopped around the sets just wouldn't leave without meeting Salman and getting his wish fulfilled. The kid waited for Salman patiently without giving up on hope. Salman was already shooting an action scene for  Bodyguard and was absorbed in his character. Learnin

Check Out: Shammi Kapoor on the sets of Rockstar

Image
Bollywood legend Shammi Kapoor, who breathed his last on Sunday, August 14, will be seen in director Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film  Rockstar . The actor, who passed away due to kidney failure actor, was on dialysis when he shot for the film in Delhi. The film stars his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. This will be the first and last time Ranbir shared screen space with his grand-uncle. Ranbir plays the role of a small-town boy dreaming of becoming a rockstar. The duo will be seen together in a 'jugalbandi' where Ranbir will be playing a guitar while Shammi will play a shenai. Shammi had earlier said that playing shenai had always been his passion and he was happy to show his skills in the film. Imtiaz felt extremely fortunate to have Shammiji in his film. He says that Shammiji was the true "rockstar" on sets and everyone else including Ranbir were just his attendants. Here are some pictures of the 'Yahooo' man, Shammi Kapoor, on the sets

Rana turns to uncle for his cop act in Ramu's Department

Image
It isn't just Ram Gopal Varma who is teaching the tricks of the trade to Rana Daggubati as far as his cop drama  Department  is concerned. The hunky newcomer is making preparations of his own as far as enacting the part of a cop is concerned. For starters he is taking tips from a close friend's father who is a senior cop himself. Informs a source close to Rana, "Since  Department  is meant to be a realistic take on affairs instead of being one of those 'masala' cop stories, Rana is taking his characterisation very seriously. Since he has close family relationship with some top cops, he has been having intense meetings with them, both formally and informally, to understand the psyche and conduct of cops. An uncle of his is turning out to be a great help since he is very fond of Rana from his childhood days. He has been narrating quite a few real life stories from his past and explaining how exciting but tough it is to be a cop when there are forces pulling you fro

Salman gets back his Wanted bracelet for Bodyguard

Image
So what if Salman Khan is playing a cool, suave and stylish Bodyguard in the namesake film? At the end of the day, audiences still expect Salman Khan to be playing, what else, but Salman Khan in every film of his. No wonder, the superstar is continuing to oblige and one step in that direction is to continue with his lucky charm. After missing in the initial few posters of  Bodyguard , Salman's favourite bracelet is back in the new look that has just been revealed. "Yes, Bhai would be seen with his bracelet yet again", confirms a stylist attached to the film, "It would have been sacrilege to part from it. In fact a glimpse of that has already been revealed in the latest poster design. However, a call has to be taken on how much is good enough since he carries a different persona in  Bodyguard ." It has to be seen though whether a new persona in this out and out entertainer would indeed make a difference to how Salman would be presented before his audience. Af

You can become Salman and Kareena's bodyguard in your city

Image
Every politician, star or celebrity has a bodyguard walking with them and protecting them. You see an alert bodyguard around a VIP in form of a cop, black cat commando or a private security. Salman Khan plays Kareena Kapoor's character, Divya's bodyguard in the upcoming film Bodyguard . Since her life is under threat, his job is to protect her. Now, the makers of the film are taking the concept of a 'personal bodyguard' to every town and city that Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor will travel to. You can be 'their Bodyguard' for a day in your city and protect them throughout the day. Says source, the idea is to make people live the life of a bodyguard for a day. Selected people will be like a shadow of Salman or Kareena in each city they travel and will get to touch and feel the glamour world intimately. For a lay man, this would be a great opportunity to be with Salman or Kareena for the whole day. Atul Agnihotri confirms, "We are traveling to around

RGV's Not A Love Story gets clean chit from HC

Image
Ram Gopal Varma's latest offering  Not A Love Story  has been grabbing headlines for a few days now, the latest being the petition filed by Emile Jerome in the Mumbai High Court against the film, stating that the film was based on his life and was untrue. The case so far is that Jerome, who is currently serving a 10 year prison term for `culpable homicide not amounting to murder' in the Neeraj Grover case, had sent legal notice demanding that Varma seek his consent before the release. He feared the film may be biased against him. The hearing of the petition that happened yesterday saw the High Court ruling in favour of the film. Post the hearing, the High Court reached a final verdict absolving the film of any infringement in the case. Ramu further stated that the film carried a disclaimer in the beginning that states 'All the characters shown in the film are fictitious and any resemblance to anyone, living or dead is purely coincidental'. With this ruling, Ramu&#

Plans firmed up for Housefull 3

Image
Shooting of  Housefull 2  may still be in progress while director Sajid Khan would be beginning work on his next with Vashu Bhagnani in 2012. However, plans are already being put together by Sajid Nadiadwala as well as Sajid Khan to convert  Housefull  into a huge franchise. Instead of being content with just  Housefull 2 , the makers would be joining hands again for  Housefull 3 soon. "They have the flexibility to do because unlike a  Krrish  or a  Harry Potter , they are not required to continue the same story in  Housefull  series", says a source close to the makers, "Story of Housefull 2  has nothing to do with  Housefull  though the basic idea of a house getting full stays intact. In a way just as  Golmaal  has continued to be a franchise with the characterisation as well as relationships changing with just the core theme - an all around 'golmaal' - being intact, even  Housefull 2  would be taking forward the spirit of Housefull . This allows Sajid to work

Could the G.I. Joe Sequel Actually Be Good?

Image
It seems too much to hope for -- I mean, it still stars Channing Tatum and is being directed by the guy who did the goddamn Justin Bieber movie. And yet, earlier today we heard that the awesome Walton Goggins has just been cast in the movie, and now... That's The Rock, who plays Roadblock in the movie. Now, we don't know for certain that this is a picture of the Rock as Roadblock... but filming on the movie did start today, and this picture came out today, so I'd say it's a pretty reasonable assumption to make. What strikes me most about it is when I look at him, he looks like Roadblock. Like a character I recognize on sight alone -- something I couldn't do with anyone in the first Joe movie other than Snake Eyes and the Baroness. Is it possible that director Jon Chu actually gives a shit about G.I. Joe? Maybe, god forbid, he even likes it a little? And doesn't want to just crap out a sequel? Are such things even possible? I don't know. I just don't k

T-Series issues legal notice to jewellery brand Agni over Ra.One

Image
That SRK's magnum opus offering  Ra.One  is one film that is unanimously the most awaited film of the decade is known to one and all. The latest 'update' on the film has been totally unexpected one though. The film's music label T-Series has issued a legal notice to the leading jewellery brand Agni, for illegally using the film's unreleased song, ' Chammak Challo ' that has been sung by the international sensation, Akon. The song in question was being played on the ramp when Agni's brand ambassador Amrita Rao was walking the ramp with other models on the fourth day of India International Jewellery Week (IIJW). Reportedly, T-Series have asked for a compensation of Rs. 2 crores from the brand. They are moving court for the same, as anyone who wants to use their song needs the music company's permission. But since the said song is not even released; there was no question of getting a license to play the song at all. The scratch version of the song w

Who's that man being bashed up by John Abraham?

Image
John Abraham isn't getting all wild and ferocious for no reason in his upcoming action flick  Force . After all he is being challenged by a mystery baddie, someone who hasn't been seen in a Bollywood flick before. The makers too are keeping the suspense element going and haven't revealed the identity of a 'maniac animal', as is the characterisation of this young villain, who is responsible for John creating all mayhem on screen. "There is a history behind this strategy", says a source, "Even Tamil as well as Telugu versions of  Force  featured largely untried villains. While a newcomer called Jeeven had featured in  Kaakha..Kaakha: The Police  which had Suriya in lead, Venkatesh starrer Gharshana  had Saleem Baig making his big screen debut. What was common in both baddies was that they looked like normal youngsters walking on the street. It was this facet that brought out the suspense element since audiences were taken for a surprise once they star

Kashyap's That Girl In Yellow Boots promo with RGV's Not A Love Story

Image
It's been a long and chequered history of disrupted and fractured association between Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap. After they collaborated on  Satya , they had parted acrimoniously. But after showering scathing criticism on Varma, his ex- protégée Kashyap has mended the fences with Varma. And the first sign of a rapprochement? The trailer of Kashyap's  That Girl In Yellow Boots  has been attached to Ram Gopal Varma's much talked-about  Not A Love Story  releasing this Friday, and not without resistance from the normally-resilient Ramu. So far it was unthinkable that Ramu and Kashyap would ever come together in any way, least of all within the confines of one feature film. Ramu, it should be recalled, had launched Kashyap's career as a writer in  Satya . The film got Kashyap instant recognition. But like many of Ramu's protégées, Kashyap chose to move out of the Varma camp soon after  Satya . Kashyap wrote two more films  Shool  and  Kaun  for Varma and

KJo begins shooting for Student Of The Year with song sequence

Image
Karan Johar starts shooting today for his new directorial venture Student Of The Year with an elaborate campus song choreographed by Farah Khan. Though Farah refuses to comment on the song, the buzz is that the three debutantes Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra would be doing a high school party gig, a la Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani's 'Koi Mil Gaya Mera Dil Gaya' in Karan's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film's launch sees two sets of anxious parents from within the film industry Mahesh Bhatt-Soni Razdan and David-Lali Dhawan praying and crossing their fingers for their respective offspring. Says a source, "Like all anxious parents of children who attend school or college for the first day Varun, Alia and Siddharth's parents want to be on the sets on Tuesday. But they've been requested to stay away so that the youngsters don't get self-conscious with their dance movements. And it's not just the kids' first time.

Ashoke Pandit to turn his documentary on Kashmiri widows into feature film

Image
Incredibly, there is an entire village in Kashmir named Dardpora populated by widows of terrorists and militants. Last year, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit visited Dardpora to make a documentary Village Of Widows on the widows. On the occasion of India's 64th year of Independence, the story of the women of this heartrending village would now be converted into a feature film. Real widows from Dardpora will be put through rigorous workshops to "play" militants' widows. Real women will be sharing screen space with top-notch actresses playing widows. In addition, Pandit would sign one actress, Shabana Azmi, to play the most important widow of the village. Says Pandit, "Apart from the pivotal role, I'd like majority of the widows to be played by new faces. There're so many talented stage actresses in this country waiting to express themselves on issues that go beyond entertainment." To shoot on location in the volatile village of the damned and doomed wo

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande Movie Review

Image
The clash between development and displacement has, most of the times, resulted in controversy. I strongly feel that if there was an issue that was crying out for a movie of its own, it's the acquisition of land in the name of development. The incident makes news, but dies a premature death most of the times. Lessons are learnt but discarded with speed. The sufferers are unheard and uncared for... SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE brings back memories of two films which address the issue of land acquisition, though, I wish to add, the stories of each of these films are different and distinct... THE CASTLE, a 1997 Australian film, was about a family living near the airport in Melbourne. It is forced to leave its home, since the government and airport authorities have plans for the extension of the airport. How they fight to remain in their house, taking their case as far as the High Court, forms the crux of the story.

Not A Love Story Movie Review

Image
Ramgopal Varma is controversy's favorite child. And it's not the first time that there is so much of a hullabaloo over an RGV film. Be it his choice of subjects or his tweets, RGV is truly distinct, known for walking the untrodden path and speaking his mind. Like him or not, you can't disregard him. This time around, the maverick film-maker chooses to narrate a crime story on an extremely contentious theme, a heinous murder. In 2008, the nation woke up to a dreadful, deplorable news -- a man was murdered and his body was chopped into pieces in suburban Mumbai. It was too horrific an incident to be forgotten. When one thinks of it, one wonders what could've provoked this brutal deed.  It is evident at the very outset that RGV's NOT A LOVE STORY is inspired by the gruesome murder, the savage deed. It also raises a very pertinent question: How could something so brutal happen in a city like Mumbai? The film also drives home a point of view that no one is intrinsic

Chitkabrey - Shades of Grey Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS  There aren't any expectations whatsoever that one has from the music of  Chitkabrey - Shades Of Grey . Other than the fact that the very title doesn't convey anything about the story in the offing, even the musical team here is untested. Yes, one looks forward to what newcomers have to offer (in this case composer Akshay Bafila) because time and again there is a surprise or two that comes your way. However with no awareness whatsoever about the film or those who are a part of it, one isn't really desperate to find out what does Chitkabrey - Shades Of Grey  have to offer. MUSIC  It's a ' Mujra ' beginning for  Chitkabrey - Shades Of Grey  with Rekha Rao coming behind the mike for a song which is totally lifeless. Low on arrangements and hence energy as well, it makes one wonder whether the word 'chitkabra' has been included by lyricist Rajesh Kumar just because the film's title had to be justified. Boring to the core, it makes you

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS  One isn't quite sure what to expect from the music of  Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande . After all, the title doesn't quite convey a musical in the offing while the promotion has been on a lower side as well. However, with youngsters like Siddharatth-Suhas at the helm of affairs and Dhruv Dhalla (who is remembered till date for ' Chak De Phatte' - Khosla Ka Ghosla ) chipping in as well, you hope to be surprised with a song or two that may have in it to be popular amongst the youth. MUSIC  It's lounge, club and Punjabi mix coming together to create a lethal combination in the form of ' Naino Wali Whiskey ' which could just have gone a long way had it been promoted aggressively. Shahid Maliya is the man coming behind the mike for this dance floor number that is just the kind of song that becomes hugely popular up North. Since this Parvin Dabas film too has a Delhi setting to it, it is surprising that the makers didn't go all out to bring this

Yaara O Dildaara

Image
EXPECTATIONS  You do expect a fun score from  Yaara O Dildaara , a Punjabi film. In any case market is showing vast improvement when it comes to Punjabi films, the most recent example being  Jine Mera Dil Lutiya  which has set new records up North. Now with  Yaara O Dildaara , one does look forward to composer Jaidev Kumar and lyricist Babu Singh Maan coming up with a foot tapping soundtrack all over again. MUSIC  It's the call of let's-play-some-dhol all over again as Harbhajan Maan begins his rendition of ' Happy Hai Jee '. With guest lyricist Kumaar pitching in for this celebration number, you get to know how rest of the album would unfold. An out and out celebration number which has the protagonist ensuring that there is fun and frolic all around him as he takes the centre stage, ' Happy Hai Jee ' stays true to it's title of being a 'happy' number!  From this point on it is lyricist Babu Singh Maan that one hears for the five songs that

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS  Now that's the kind of subject and genre where you do expect Yash Raj Films to come up with a winner of a soundtrack. Marriage, celebration, dulhan, stars like Imran and Katrina, 'dhol', the works - there is no reason why one would expect anything lesser than a foot tapping soundtrack that promises to keep the fun and energy high. Though you do expect quality lyrics with Irshad Kamil on board, you are particularly excited to check out what does composer Sohail Sen deliver for his first ever YRF film after impressing in his earlier two films with Ashutosh Gowariker -  What's Your Raashee?  and  Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey .
