Milestone 3 XT883 from Motorola heads to China Telecom

Image
Motorola has announced that the Milestone 3 will be headed to China Telecom. The Milestone 3 is the latest version of the smartphone we know as the Droid 3 here in the states. That Droid 3 turned up a while back in avideo tutorial and looked like an interesting device. We learned not long ago that the Milestone 3 (Droid 3 in other countries) will not be hitting the UK. The Milestone 3 is hitting China though with China Unicom. The smartphone will operate on the China Telecom e-Surfing 3G network and promises to set a new milestone for speed and performance on the network. The price is unannounced at this point and the smartphone will not hit the network until Q3. Features include Android 2.3 operating system and a dual-core processor that claims to be twice as fast as the average single core part. The screen is a 4-inch qHD unit supporting 24-bit color. The keyboard has a row of numbers on top that are permanently there so there is no need to hit the alt key when typing. The rear camer

Fujitsu and Folli Follie team for launch of F-022 smelly phone in China

Image
There are undoubtedly some very strange gadgets in China. I have seen more than a few that offer smells or allow the user to spray scents on a special part of the device. Each time I see something that offers smells for the user, I wonder if it smells particularly bad in some areas of the world. The new phone is called the F-022 and Folli Follie is a popular brand in China for watches, jewelry and other accessories for women. The F-022 will come to Beijing Digital Telecom on June 24 and will be in all of the firm’s 1000 stores around the country. The front of the phone is a gold tone color, has a diamond pattern on the front cover, and sports a 2-karat cubic zirconia. The weird feature of the phone is a small disc that the user can remove and spray their favorite perfume onto. This will make the phone smell like perfume. The phone has an 8.1MP camera sensor that also has a special beautiful skin mode. This mode promises to enhance the look of the people’s skin in the photos. The camera

Spotify US launch may be only a few weeks away

Image
Spotify recently inked a deal with Universal Music that would allow the streaming music service access to some of the music that Universal artists make. That deal hinted that the US launch of the service was very close to happening. Spotify general manager Jonathan Forster has said at an ad conference that the music service is wrapping up the final licensing deal for the US launch “as I speak.” The announcement hints that the launch could be only a couple weeks away. Publish Post Music fans in the US have been counting the days until the launch of Spotify in the states. The same exec has also offered the exceptionally vague “We won’t launch before July 5th” tidbit as well. Forester has also noted that Spotify has agreed to a faster monetization strategy to get the deals done than it really wanted to do. Business Insider figures that spending more on the licensing deals will mean that once the service launches in the US we will see less free streaming hours before the service converts

Alpinist Camera Case looks better than your camera

Image
If you like to do things in the outdoors where your electronic gear is very likely to take a beating you need to take precautions or you will be buying new gadgets all the time and that gets very expensive. You can buy some point and shoot cameras that are rugged on their own, but most of us already have a camera we really like and want a case that will keep it safe while hiking or doing other things in the outdoors. A very cool case has turned up called the Alpinist Camera Case that has the coolest design of any case for a camera I have ever seen. The case is made from lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum and it has a ring that is intended to allow the user to clamp the case and their camera to a climbing harness, backpack, or other carrying method. The case comes in black or silver and looks to be very rugged. I really like the etched design on the surfaced of the case, I bet they help with more grip too. The cases are designed to be water resistant, have safety lock slots, side grip

HP Wi-Fi Mouse goes on sale

Image
HP’s decision to put WiFi not Bluetooth into its new Wi-Fi Mobile Mouse last month left us scratching our heads a little, but the peripheral is now on sale if you’re feeling in the mood for some wireless overkill. Priced at $49.99, the mouse has five programmable buttons and a tilting scroll-wheel for easier navigation. There’s also adjustable sensitivity – from the 1200 CPI default to up to 1600 CPI – along with the promise of up to nine months use from a pair of AA batteries. HP has resisted the temptation to make the whole thing swoopy, and so it’ll apparently suit both left- and right-handed people. Of course, it’s the WiFi connectivity that HP is most proud of, and it does mean that those without Bluetooth in their computers can use a wireless mouse without having to sacrifice a USB port for a transceiver dongle. You’ll need a Windows 7 notebook or PC – with WiFi, obviously! – in order to use it.

Apple social network using proximity people-matching tipped

Image
Details of a potential Apple social network system between iOS mobile devices have been uncovered, thanks to a new patent application from the company. “Ad Hoc Networking Based on Content and Location” details a system of proximity-based sharing and communication, where a user’s device usage history – whether locations they’ve been recently, music or video they’ve downloaded or watched, or pictures they’ve shared – allows for common interest matching without the time investment a Facebook profile demands. According to the application, the system wouldn’t require that users set up a profile and then search through those profiles of other people. Instead, a “Buddy Finder” system would automatically flag the device up as open to being discovered by nearby people with similar interests, either using point-to-point connections like Bluetooth or NFC, or server-based systems relying on an iPhone reporting in with its GPS location. What’s particularly interesting is the sort of data Apple coul

Kinect for Windows SDK beta released: developers gesture wildly

Image
Microsoft has released the Kinect for Windows SDK beta, as expected, allowing PC developers to use the motion-tracking accessory. A free 100MB download, the SDK offers support for the depth sensor, color camera and quad-microphone array, along with all the clever skeletal-tracking systems that Xbox 360 game developers have had access to. There’s also integration with Windows’ speech recognition API. That potentially means developers will be able to use the microphone array – which can pinpoint which user is talking thanks to beam formation – to transcribe speech to text, open and control applications, and more. Microsoft has thrown in plenty of technical documentation, samples, all the drivers you’ll need and support for C++, C#, or Visual Basic. This current iteration of the SDK is only for non-commercial purposes; Microsoft says it will be releasing a commercial version later on. You’ll obviously need a Kinect sensor, too, which currently costs around $140.

Facebook iPad app imminent tip insiders

Image
Facebook is reportedly readying an iPad app, despite Mark Zuckerberg’s claims late last year that the iPad isn’t a mobile device and as such doesn’t require one. According to the NYTimes‘ sources, even while Zuckerberg was dismissing the prospect, work on the app was underway by Facebook’s engineers: now in the final stages of testing, it’s expected to hit the iPad 2 within the coming weeks. Development of the Facebook app for iPad has apparently been going on for almost a year, with Zuckerberg heavily involved in design decisions. That lengthy and considered gestation has paid off, according to the sources. ”The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images” they claim. Among the functionality is believed to be support for the iPad 2′s dual cameras, with users able to shoot photos and video and upload them directly to Facebook. Both Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features have been “overhauled”, and the UI modified from that of the social ne

Sony teases S1 and S2 Android Honeycomb tablets [Video]

Image
Sony has released the first video in a new teaser campaign for the S1 and S2 Android Honeycomb tablets, with a Rube Goldberg-style machine theme that tells us little about the touchscreen pair. In fact, Sony seems more interested in creating city-scape shadows than it is in demonstrating its attempt to rival Apple’s iPad 2. Still, this is the first in what we’re guessing will be a pretty numerous series of videos ahead of the two tablets’ commercial release in roughly September this year. Both use NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor, with the S1 having a 10.1-inch touchscreen while the S2 uses a clamshell design and a pair of 5.8-inch touchscreens. What, exactly, Sony plans to use that double-panel tablet for is still unclear, though the company has mentioned gaming before now. Earlier this month it crossed the FCC complete with AT&T HSPA+ support, shortly followedby its S1 sibling.

LG Optimus 3D Officially Launched Today, We Do a Hands-on and Unboxing

Image
Today LG has announced the launch of the new Optimus 3D. We have seen this device many times recently so this wasn’t much of a surprise. It was first revealed in February and we got a little hands-on a few days later. LG announced that the Optimus 3D will be launching today, most likely in an attempt to be beat the HTC EVO 3D to market. Today I have the LG Optimus 3D sitting in front of me so I decided to do another hands-on for you all to enjoy. This beast of a smartphone packs a dual-core 1 Ghz TI OMAP 4 processor, a 4.3″ glasses-free 3D Display, HDMI out, dual 5 MP shooters on the rear for 3D video capture, a front facing VGA camera and more. LG is calling this the first device on their “Tri-Dual” architecture. What does that mean — dual-core, dual-memory, and dual-channel. I guess you could even say quad-dual since it has dual 5 MP cameras also. The dual channel memory and ram as well as that blazing fast dual-core CPU and all those other features should basically make this one top

Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy to Announce Emmy Nominations

Image
It has just been announced who will be announcing the Emmy nominations, and Fringe and Mike & Molly fans will be happy to hear that if they get up at the early time of 5.40am on July 14, then Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop) and Melissa McCarthy (Molly) will be the ones reading out the lucky names. Joining Jackson and McCarthy in this presentation will be John Shaffner, who is the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences chairman and CEO. This is the time of year when speculation, predictions and Emmy wish list's start getting drawn up and it would be really great if Fringe was to get recognised in some capacity this year. Whilst it unfortunately remains unlikely, I would really like to see Joshua Jackson read out the name of at least one of his co-stars, as both Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham) and John Noble (Walter Bishop) were fantastic this season in their dual (or in Torv's case triple) roles. Though it isn't outside the realm of possibility, as genre shows such as The

South Park Not Ending, Say Creators

Image
Okay, so maybe I overreacted . But you can't begrudge me, can you? Last week, South Park aired its surprisingly dark midseason finale, "You're Getting Old." While it was one of the best episodes of the show perhaps ever, it also bore a really dark tone that led many Chicken Little bloggers (such as myself) to proclaim that the sky was falling on South Park and a disinterested Matt Stone and Trey Parker were calling it quits on everyone's favorite cartoon Colorado town. Not so, say Stone and Parker. Appearing on June 15's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Stone and Parker dismissed theories that the episode was an indicator that they want to end the show. "Not really," Parker replied when asked if he and Stone ever got tired of doing the show. "We love South Park, that's still our thing." This was met with great applause from the studio audience. And what about "You're Getting Old," an episode laden with cynicism

South Park Creators to Appear on the Daily Show - Will They Answer Our Burning Question?

Image
Update: South Park creators say show isn't ending South Park's midseason finale left a lot of people -- including myself -- wondering if Matt Stone and Trey Parker were calling it quits. The show's creators, who on Sunday became Tony Award winners for their new musical The Book of Mormon, seemed to be expressing their disillusionment with the show. Through the characters of Stan and his parents, they seemed to express that they wanted to give up making South Park. But, like all great works of fiction, it can be viewed many ways, and that's just one. Other viewers seem to think that Stone and Parker are just kidding around, and that they don't plan to end the show anytime soon -- just revitalize it. Or, as another point of view has it, to keep it exactly the way it is. But in the wake of all the news surrounding them (a Tony Award's no small thing, either), it seems the duo might speak out about what they plan to do tonight (6/15) on Comedy Central's The Da

Falling Skies - Review

Image
TNT premiering Falling Skies in the neighborhood of Summer movie season was a smart move – this is one televised alien epic that delivers big screen thrills week after week that you don’t have to leave home for. Having watched about eight hours of Falling Skies so far, and being a well-qualified science-fiction freak with a sub interest in UFOs, I can offer a general opinion to like-minded TV and Movie fans upfront: watch it, you won’t be disappointed. Now let’s see if I can sell this thing to the skeptics. The first big surprise for me when I watched Falling Skies was how much it defied my expectations. I think most hardened, or even casual, science-fiction fans will come into Falling Skies with preconceived notions about what it is about. The whole “aliens invading Earth” thing — done to death, right? Sure Falling Skies is a take on the alien invaders trope, but the series manages to separate itself from what makes most of the entries in this tried-and-true sub-genre in some very c

The Voice, Why I’m No Longer Watching..

Image
Yeah, so I’m pretty much done with this show. I won’t pretend as if it will miss me as a viewer. By all accounts, this show is a hit. NBC has already ordered a second season and even slotted it to premiere in that coveted spot after next year’s Super Bowl. I watched all of the episodes up until missing The Voice two weeks ago. It was Tivo'd, but I never felt as if I needed to watch it, and when it was time to watch the next one, I didn't make it a point to catch that either. As each day went by, I didn’t click on either of the saved recordings in my queue, and never did I feel like I was missing anything. No co-worker came up to me to ask whether I saw The Voice last night. I didn’t hear or read about anything spectacular that took place on the show. Weren’t the live performances supposed to have started? I mean, this is what we were supposedly waiting for, right? So when I finally took the time to watch the past two shows I missed, I found myself fast-forwarding through both

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G Delayed Until Fall

Image
In the midst of the negative news from RIM’s quarterly earnings report, it’s been revealed that the BlackBerry PlayBook will not be getting a 4G version until fall. The Wi-Fi version of the tablet was launched back in April with the plan of having a 4G version launch sometime this summer. Ever since the lukewarm reception to the PlayBook after launch, carriers have been hesitant about picking up the device. RIM had publicly stated that Verizon would be one of the carriers to pick up the device which elicited a statement from the carrier that they were still “undecided.” Later reports indicated that the WiMAX carrier would pick up the PlayBook for its 4G network, but instead slotted it in as a 3G tablet. However, the news of the delay was not officially announced, but simply mentioned in passing by RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis when he talked about how excited he was to be launching the 4G PlayBook models this fall. Additionally, it was mentioned that the new BlackBerry 9900 and 9930 smartp

RIM Shipped 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks In Q1, Announcing Layoffs

Image
Research In Motion (RIM) has just announced its first quarter results and things are not looking good. The company’s net income for the quarter was $695 million, which is down from the $934 million of the previous quarter as well as down from the $769 million of the same quarter last year. RIM is quickly losing ground with the poor performance of its PlayBook tablet and the fierce competition. Android and iOS devices are certainly the stars of the market right now, with each quickly encroaching on the areas that made that differentiated the BlackBerry. Both sides are stepping up security and enterprise offerings, with Apple most recently unveiling a new iMessage service that looks to be a BBM killer. Their PlayBook tablet being rushed and half-baked when launched also didn’t help. RIM reported that 13.2 million BlackBerrys and 500,000 units of the PlayBook were shipped in the first quarter. But those numbers are shipment figures and not actual sales numbers, which could be much lower.

Nokia E6 Shows Up On Amazon For Pre-Orders

Image
The Nokia E6 may be one of the last of its breed, before Nokia starts pumping out Windows Phone 7.1 Mangodevices. The Nokia E6 runs Symbian Anna OS with lots of Ovi-branded apps and is perhaps Nokia’s attempt to continue the legacy of its much-loved QWERTY smartphones. The device has been talked about for some time and has now popped up on Amazon for pre-orders. The specs were officially announced back in April, showing that the Nokia E6 will feature a 2.46-inch VGA touchscreen display that offers four times the pixels (326ppi) than earlier E series handsets. It will also come with an 8-megapixel camera with HD support. Battery life is rated for 14.8 hours with a standby time of 31 days. On Amazon, the E6 is listed for pre-orders at $446 and will come unlocked. However, shipments for the device won’t start until another one to two months. You can check out the page here for yourself. And make sure to check out our hands-on with the device.

Apple’s “Find My iPhone” Features Revealed In Patent Application

Image
Apple’s Find My iPhone app may soon be getting some upgrades in security and sophistication. According to a recent patent application, the company is planning some new features for the app that will give users much more control over what happens when their iPhone gets lost or stolen. The patent application was dug up by Patently Apple this morning and reveals more proactive security features. You will be able to selectively protect files instead of locking the entire phone and you can scramble your sensitive data instead of wiping your entire handset. This way, if you retrieve your handset, you can simply unscramble it instead of losing all your data. Also, a new remote recording feature uses your iPhone’s mic to record audio of the thief and their surroundings and you can use a remote messaging feature to warn them that you are recording or tracking their location. These are certainly some nice new features to have for protecting your iPhone, but given it’s only a patent application

Are DVRs Good or Bad for Us?

Image
As someone who have been covering the technology industry for years, I sometimes get caught up in the idea that everyone sees the same value in tech as I do. I believe that when a new product launches, the average person loves it as much as I do. And when a device I love has been updated, I fully expect to see the same level of excitement from my friends that I feel after hearing the news.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Annihilation Map Pack To Hit Xbox LIVE Later This Month

Image
Activision Blizzard announced today the third map expansion pack called Annihilation for its popular first-person shooter game, Call of Duty: Black Ops, that will bring new levels for multiplayer gameplay. This third map pack will hit Xbox Live later this month and follows the Escalation pack released in May and the First Strike pack released in February. Catch a preview of Annihilation after the cut. Annihilation will bring four new multiplayer maps and a new zombie hunter level. The four maps are called Hangar 18, Drive-In, Silo, and Hazard. The zombie level is set in Shangri-La and is described by Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia as an “exotic and mysterious map filled with deadly traps, dark secrets, and innovative gameplay that will challenge even the most daring Zombie hunters.” Activision’s Call of Duty Black Ops is one of the best-selling video games of all time with sales surpassing $1 billion since its launch last November. This new map pack add-on will arrive on Xbox LIVE fir

MacBook Air, Mac Mini Revamps With Sandy Bridge Won’t Launch Until Release Of OS X Lion?

Image
There have been reports that Apple’s revamped MacBook Air will be arriving sometime later this month. The new MacBook Airs will sport Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge chips as well as the super high speed 10Gbps Thunderboltconnector port. But some insider sources are now saying that Apple is holding back the release until Mac OS X Lion is ready. Mac OS X Lion was unveiled at the Apple WWDC 2011 developer conference earlier this month. It’s a major update that will bring a whole load of new features including new gesture controls, a built-in Mac App Store, an Expose and Spaces combination called Mission Control, and a iPad/iPhone-like app grid-style interface called LaunchPad. And, unlike previous versions that cost $129.99, the new OS X Lion lowers the barrier to only $29.99. Apple Insider’s sources familiar with the situation, say that Apple wants to wait until OS X Lion is done so that the new MacBook Airs can launch with the Gold Master build of Lion allowing customers to enjoy the enhan

Evernote Delivers App For Windows Phone 7

Image
Evernote, one of the most popular note-taking services, has finally created an app for the Windows Phone 7platform. But unlike the Evernote app for iOS and Android, this new release for Windows Phone 7 takes advantage of the panorama interface unique to the platform for an optimized experience and some additional features not available on the other platforms. The Evernote app for Windows Phone 7 offers all the same note-taking features as do the other versions, but gets a Home Panorama view that shows four panels, which includes Notes, Notebooks, Tags, and Recent Notes. Notes can be created and edited more seamlessly than on other platforms and you can add multiple images and audio recordings to each note. Premium subscribers have the option of storing their notes offline for accessing them without an internet connection. Some other features supported include a sophisticated search and a map interface for browsing notes by location. With Windows Phone 7.1 Mango and its 500 plus new fea

Facebook’s Project Spartan: An HTML5 Trojan Horse for Apple

Image
Deep in the Facebook bunker, socially-networked software engineers are cackling evilly about the downfall of Apple’s App Store. It’s probably not quite like that in reality, but I find the somewhat dry world of tech often benefits from a dash of B-movie style melodrama. If ever anything deserved an ironic chuckle, though, it’s the thought that the Cupertino-backed HTML5 could end up – at the hands of Facebook and their “Project Spartan” – presenting the biggest challenge to Apple’s mobile software dominance to date. You have to ask yourself, does the world really need another app store, and why am I leaning toward saying yes?

Damages Season 4 Promos and News

Image
Damages returns to our screens on July 13 for a fourth season and after tackling the world of Ponzi schemes in the Bernie Madoff like case last year, the central story this season will revolve around the murky world of private military contractors. We are lucky to have Damages back as FX cancelled the series, but Direct TV saved the show for another two seasons, so we will get to see Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) embroiled in another case or two that will feature many a twist and turn. At the heart of the case is John Goodman who plays the head of military contractor (think Blackwater) Howard Erickson, who is named in a wrongful death suit by Patty Hewes' law firm Hewes and Associates who are renowned for taking on the big firms. To complicate matters further one of Erickson's employees, a former decorated soldier Chris Sanchez (Chris Messina, Six Feet Under, Julie & Julia) happens to be an old school friend of Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), something that I am sure Patty will us
