If there was ever a series tailor-made for the Hawaii vacation episode(s), it has to be Cougar Town, right? Taking a band of goofballs who sit around drinking and playing stupid games in Florida and putting them in another beautiful, warm location doesn’t really change much, thankfully. “Something Good Coming” not only keeps the series grounded in its usual zany, but heartfelt antics, it also nicely wraps up the season’s biggest stories with nice finesse. I don’t want to say I was “concerned” about how the series would handle both Travis’ heartbreak and the Jules/Grayson baby stories, but I was certainly hoping that Town kept the emotional stakes resonant, but under control. Yeah, I guess that’s the right phrasing. Even though the last stretch of episodes has done a tremendous job of presenting a more subdued, mature Jules, there’s always the chance that she could become the crazy, overbearing nut-case that she was for all of the first season and a good part of this one. Fortunately for those of you who are wondering what to watch over the summer, HBO's hit show, True Blood, will be returning for its fourth season on Sunday, June 26. After months of denying that Cheryl Cole would be one of the four judges on Fox's The X Factor and finally confirming that she would be on the panel at the start of this month, the British singer has been dumped by the show. This surprise move comes after reassurances that despite not being a big name in the States and that she has a strong regional accent, neither of these factors (no pun intended) would be a problem. Though clearly with this news of Cole being dumped unceremoniously from the show at least one of those things was, if not both. This comes off the back of last weeks appearance by the judges and hosts at the Fox upfront where all seemed fine (see photo, right). I'll give American Idol credit where credit is due. This has to have been the most entertaining finale since season 7. (Sorry season 8, but too much Tatiana/Fergie/Bikini/Normun/ick for my taste.) I will say this now: we didn't actually see a lot of the top two this evening (I assume Lauren was forced to rest her voice) and I sort of missed the journey videos they normally get. Also I suppose since they sang so many duets together, we really didn't miss out on that.) Before I recap, I have a small, minor rant. Dear American Idol: you do realize that you are a self-perpetuating brand? That by promoting your Idols, successful or not, you at least give the illusion that being on American Idol means something? modern family tv newsAs I mentioned last week, Modern Family had a lot to live up to over its final two episodes if it wanted to match the heights it did over the same period last season. Last week's episode certainly matched "Hawaii" for its sheer comedy quotient -- both episodes were some of the funniest of the series. Similarly, "The One That Got Away" matched "Family Portrait" not only in the comedy department, but also with an unabashed sentimentality about what it means to be a family. Of course, this is the general theme of the entire series, but what the finale is able to accomplish in this area is something I have wanted from the series all season: real character growth.

We’ve spent nearly three seasons following around masterful escape artist, drug addict, and wonderful nurse Jackie Peyton, a buzzsaw with a pixie cut with double lives and double-double lives. How she manages to keep everything straight and think on her toes as well as she does, I’ll never know, but what I do know is that the walls are finally starting to close in on our favorite junkie. After a couple of false starts toward getting Jackie clean, her stunt with Kelly and the unaccounted for medicine may come back to bite her in the butt, as this week found suspicion gathering with next week featuring Jackie being suspended. It’ll be interesting to see how the show handles this development. Season three has been slow-ish in terms of plot development, though progress has been made, and to see Jackie actually have to face serious concrete consequences for her often heinous actions would be worth the near misses.
