S Korea vs Greece Player Ratings

Image
Liow Yi Yang rates the players after South Korea's impressive 2-0 win over Greece. Greece were comprehensively beaten by a hard working South Korean side who showed plenty of invention and graft. South Korea Jung Sung Ryong - 7 The 25-year-old produced some solid saves and was confident in the punch. Displayed why he replaced the evergreen Lee Woon Jae. Cha Du Ri - 8 Great outlet on the right, provided tantalizing crosses and was resolute at the back. Excellent from the right back. Cho Yong Hyung - 7 Dealt comfortably with the superior aerial abilities of the Greeks, kept things simple and was mostly faultless. Lee Jung Soo - 7.5 Great awareness to score the first goal and was solid in defence. Could not ask for more from a central defender. Lee Young Pyo - 7 The experienced player was vocal and marshalled his defence well. Provided some width down the left. Lee Chung Yong - 7.5 Showed why he plays in the Barclays Premier League. Showed some great touches in midfield and almost ni

Group B: S Korea 2-0 Greece

Image
Lee Jung-soo and Park Ji-sung scored as South Korea earned a convincing 2-0 World Cup Group B win over Greece in Port Elizabeth. Lee blasted his side into a seventh-minute lead when the central defender volleyed home Ki Sung-yueng's free-kick into the box. Park Chu-young then went close with a couple of efforts, his second following a lightning break which almost caught the Greeks cold with goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas making a good save with his outstretched boot. Greece were poor value in the first period and any hopes they had of salvaging something from the game were extinguished seven minutes into the second period when Park made the most of an error to run at the Greek defence and slot a low shot past the advancing Tzorvas.

Evra slams Gallas rift reports

Image
Patrice Evra has rubbished reports of a rift in the camp as "bull" amid rumours William Gallas is furious about the captaincy. Les Bleus failed to win their opening World Cup game for the third successive tournament last night as they could only draw 1-1 with Uruguay at Cape Town's Green Point Stadium. While the fixture could be seen as the toughest they will face in Group A, with matches against Mexico and hosts South Africa to come, the performance did little to appease the doubters who predicted Raymond Domenech's side would fail to perform in the finals. Evra has been handed the captain's armband for the tournament after Thierry Henry's move to the substitutes' bench. That decision by Domenech sparked talk of disunity in the camp, with the more experienced Gallas apparently unhappy at being overlooked and consequently deciding to boycott the media in protest. Despite failing to get off to a winning start, though, Manchester United left-back Evra remai

North Korea rely on mental strength

Image
An Yong-hak believes North Korea are mentally tougher than five-time World Cup winners Brazil ahead of their Tuesday meeting in Group G. North Korea, who are ranked 105th by FIFA, begin only their second World Cup finals campaign against Brazil in Johannesburg. "The mentality for victory, strong organisational power and unity in fighting - these attributes are further ahead in us than the Brazil team, I think," An, who plays for Japanese club Omiya Ardija, told South Africa's SuperSport TV. Defence was a key to North Korea securing a place in South Africa after reaching the knockout stage on their only other appearance in England in 1966. North Korea did not concede a goal in six games in the third-round group stage during qualifying, and a hard-fought goalless draw in Saudi Arabia in the final round secured qualification. "We are grouped with Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast, but we will do our best with strong mentality and organisational power in order to sen

"Kuyt could join Benitez at Inter"

Image
Dirk Kuyt's agent has admitted that "anything is possible" amid speculations of a reunion with Rafael Benitez at the San Siro. The Liverpool player was a firm favourite of Benitez when he was at Anfield, and handed the Holland international more than 200 appearances since he arrived at the club in 2006. It has been reported that Kuyt and teammate Javier Mascherano could join the European Champions for £33 million. However, Kuyt's agent Rob Jansen has insisted that his client is focused on the World Cup for now. He told Calciomercato.it: "It's just rumours, we know nothing about this offer. "Dirk is thinking now only about the World Cup. "He has an excellent relationship with Benitez, but we are commenting only on an hypothesis, because there is nothing concrete. When and if an offer arrives, we'll see. Jansen concluded by declaring that Kuyt is happy with his life at Anfield but refuses to rule out a reunion with his former boss. "Dirk is

Malouda: Substitute role is frustrating

Image
Florent Malouda found it "frustrating" to be on the bench until the last 15 minutes of France's 2010 FIFA World Cup stalemate with Uruguay. Les Blues failed to win in their opening group match for the third successive World Cup as Raymond Domenech's mis-firing side failed to find a way past their Group A opponents at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Domenech deployed Malouda, Thierry Henry and Andre Pierre Gignac off the bench but the Chelsea forward admits it was disappointing to come on with just 15 minutes left. "It's frustrating," he said. "But that's life. I hope I get a chance to show my quality. "Hopefully we can take this (point) as an opportunity to move on. That will be important." After Group A rivals South Africa and Mexico drew 1-1 in yesterday's early match, Domenech believes it is they who hold the advantage. "We lacked that last bit, the last pass," Domenech admitted. "We had to guard against an unl

Evra: How did we not win it?

Image
Patrice Evra is amazed at France's failure to bag all three points in their 2010 FIFA World Cup opener against Uruguay. The Les Bleus enjoyed the majority of possession and had numerous chances to score. However, the Uruguay defence stood resolute even when their player Nicolas Lodeiro was sent off with 10 minutes to go and managed to scrap a goalless draw. Evra told L'Equipe: "Frankly, I don't see what the problem was. We played really well. I don't know how they could take it (a draw)." France take on Mexico next on 17 June

Capello fires Wayne Rooney warning

Image
England coach Fabio Capello has warned Wayne Rooney to keep his discipline and show respect to referees during the World Cup. But Capello also believes Rooney has the "hunger" to shine in South Africa as England prepare for their opening game against the United States in Rustenburg. Rooney was sent off during the quarter-final against Portugal in Germany four years ago. The 24-year-old also showed signs of losing his cool during the practice match against Platinum Stars on Monday and was booked for dissent. Capello has spoken to the Manchester United striker and wants Rooney to behave in the manner he did during the qualifying campaign. The Italian said: "Wayne Rooney played all the qualifying games for the World Cup and had no problems with the referees. "I hope we see the same Rooney during the World Cup. "I have spoken with him but Rooney is a fantastic player because he wants to win. "The hunger in him is very strong to win. "But you have to be ca

Mexico coach laments poor display

Image
Mexico boss Javier Aguirre was disappointed with his side's performance against hosts South Africa on Friday. The Bafana Bafana held Aguirre's side to a 1-1 draw and could even have stolen all three points right at the very end but striker Katlego Mphela was denied by the post in the 89th minute. Mexico, who were considered favourites going into the match, flattered to deceive throughout the match and it was no surprise that the coach openly expressed his annoyance after the game. Speaking to Televisa, he said: "I'm upset. I made it known to the players that I wanted to win. But this is just the beginning, we have two more games, there is still hope and desire. "The team showed personality and a good temperament," he continued. "I am not pleased with the disorder [of our play] in the second half though, we gave them too much space." "Both teams are going away with a bittersweet taste and now we are forced to beat France in our next game,"

Altidore to start against England

Image
United States coach Bob Bradley has confirmed Hull flop Jozy Altidore will start against England. Altidore netted only one goal for the Tigers last season when on loan from Villarreal. But the 20-year-old will face Fabio Capello's side after recovering from an ankle injury which kept him out of last weekend's friendly win over Australia. Altidore was USA's leading scorer during their qualification campaign with six goals. Bradley said: "It was an important year for Jose. Any player that has gone to the Premier League finds out about the level and the competitiveness. "But I think he grew a lot at Hull and the one thing I would always say about Jose, from our experiences with him, is when he's come into our camps he's shown that, when things don't come easily it's helped him. "He comes in with a level of determination and ready to prove himself. He knows we believe in him. That's why he continues to be important for us." Bradley was a

France vs Uruguay Player Ratings

We rate the players in the Group A game between France and Uruguay on Friday. By Abhay Puri & Abhishek Mehrotra France were unable to break down a dogged 10-man Uruguayan outfit in Cape Town as both the opening matches of the 2010 FFIA World Cup ended in draws. France Hugo Lloris - 5.5 Beat away a stinging Diego Forlan drive but was not troubled otherwise. A couple of spills that did not cause any harm. Bacary Sagna - 6 Barely provided any service from the right flank - seemingly content to sit back and defend. At least he made sure William Gallas was protected from the wiles of Diego Forlan. Eric Abidal - 6 Props for keeping the feared Luis Suarez quiet throughout the game, and he did not have much to do in the last 20-25 minutes as he was the only man in the French half. William Gallas - 4 Had a harrowing time against Diego Forlan - especially when the striker stepped inside to shoot. The Arsenal veteran had to rely on club teammate Bacary Sagna to bail him out more than once.
