Jawbone UP health tracking wristband priced & dated

Image
Jawbone has announced launch details for its UP motion-tracking wristband, which will go on sale on November 6 priced at $99.99. Revealed back in July, the UP band syncs with your iOS device via a 3.5mm plug and, using Jawbone’s free UP app, tracks your exercise and sleep patterns and – through subtle vibrations – can even remind you to get active or wake up at the “perfect” time. The water-resistant band has a rechargeable battery good for up to ten days use, along with motion sensors and a vibration motor similar to what you’d find in your cellphone. Jawbone splits the functionality into three parts: first, exercise tracking, combining data from the UP wristband and the app to show where you’ve gone via GPS, how fast you got there, and how hard a workout it all was. Then there’s sleep, with UP tracking how many hours you slept, whether you were in deep or light sleep, how much time you spent awake, and what the overall sleep quality was. Learning from that data, UP can subsequen

Slate 2 resurrects HP’s tablet dreams with Windows 7, on sale this month

Image
HP’s original Slate 500 was a highly anticipated tablet that failed to make a splash, but found itself a loyal group of followers. Now months after the TouchPad’s sadly curtailed run, HP is returning to its Windows stomping grounds with the Slate 2, a refreshed model with some tweaks more appropriate for touch and pen-based input. The new Slate will improve on the first with six hours of quoted battery life – a 300% increase. Externally there’s not a lot of difference in the Slate 2. You’ve still got a netbook-grade 1024 x 600 display panel at 8.9 inches, and Windows 7 is still chugging along. The processor is upgraded to an Atom Oak Trail Z670, though that still may not be enough to give Windows 7 the power it needs, even with a faster 64GB solid-state drive. Enhancements include a new included stylus and a Swype-enabled virtual keyboard – a novelty on a Windows device, to be sure. Minor cosmetic updates and a sold-separately Bluetooth speaker dock round out the package . The H

ASUS Lamborghini VX6S Cedar Trail netbook gets pre-release benchmarks

Image
This week the newest ASUS Lamborghini collaboration in the VX65 has been both benchmarked and teased by ASUS in the form of a lovely new wallpaper. This device is set to be released with a sweet Intel Atom CedarTrail D2700 2.13 GHz CPU, AMD Radeon 6470M GPU, and has a 12-inch display under a hood that looks very much to be a fire red (or orange, whatever you want to call it) Lamborghini sports car. This goes up against the Pine Trail/ION2-powered VX6 Lamborghini ASUS predecessor as well as the Asus EEE PC 1215 running a relatively comparable chipset. Who will come out on top? I think you know the answer to that. These three devices are all powerhouses in their own right, and you’ve got to note that the newest ASUS doesn’t yet have a final build on it. That said, below you’ll find just a couple of benchmarks while the rest are sitting on NetBookLive where they originated from. Have a peek at what it means to be running the newest bit of automotive inspired computer design:

Qualcomm reports stellar Q4 earnings with $4.12 billion in revenue

Image
Qualcomm reported its fiscal Q4 earnings today, revealing a revenue of $4.12 billion, which is a 39 percent increase from the same period last year. Net profit rose 22 percent from the same quarter last year, jumping up from $865 million to $1.06 billion. The chip maker also issued a strong guidance forecast, exceeding analyst expectations. Key highlights include Qualcomm’s shipments of CDMA-based mobile station modems. A total of 127 million units were shipped in fiscal Q4, exceeding the forecasted 120 to 125 million units. Qualcomm also raked in a $39.1 billion in total sales for other CDMA device. And the company gets additional royalty revenue from CDMA-based devices. Qualcomm also issued a strong forecast for this current fiscal quarter as well as the next fiscal year. The recent launch of the iPhone 4S marks the first time Apple is using Qualcomm chipsets for its entire line. Apple had previously only used Qualcomm’s chipset in its CDMA version of the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S

Apple confirms iOS 5 / iPhone 4S battery issues

Image
Since early after iOS 5 was released several weeks ago for iPhone, users have complained of battery issues, and today it’s become officially confirmed by an Apple representative that not only are there several bugs, they’re working to fix them all up in a single patch to be released soon. We’ve addressed this concern ourselves this past week and have confirmed that just a single switch in the settings panel alleviates much of the concern. What Apple has apparently spoken to The Loop today is that they’ll be sending out a bug fix inside a few weeks. The fix that we’ve found is to simply flip the Setting Time Zone switch and you should see instant results. As for what Apple has noted, the following was sent out to Jim Darlymple earlier today: “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” – Apple Representativ

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime visits the FCC

Image
ASUS is following up its successful Eee Pad Transformer tablet with the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, which is rumored to launch a week from now on November 9. Further supporting that schedule are documents for the tablet turning up at the FCC today, indicating that the slate is approved and indeed on its way for an imminent launch. And this time, it’s sporting a much sleeker look, measuring only 8.3mm thin, consistent with the company’s Ultrabook design. Like its predecessor, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer will sport a 10-inch display and tout the ability to transform into a notebook with the addition of a keyboard dock that also acts as a battery extender. Although details on its exact specs are not confirmed yet, ASUS chairmen Jonney Shih did show off the tablet back at the AsiaD conference last month, confirming that it would pack a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. The slate is also expected to either ship with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS or to get the upgrade soon aft

HTC Flyer tablet now available for T-Mobile

Image
The T-Mobile compatible HTC Flyer tablet has finally arrived. We’ve been expecting this version since a 3G capable HTC Flyer tablet with support for T-Mobile bands surfaced at the FCC back in June. HTC posted the product page for the device today, revealing a price of $299.99 with a new service plan from T-Mobile, although the carrier has yet to begin advertising the device on its own web site. The HTC Flyer is a 7-inch tablet running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and powered by a single-core 1.5GHz processor. It features a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, microSD card slot, and micro-USB. Its 1024 x 700 pixel resolution capacitive touchscreen display also works with a stylus, the HTC Scribe Pen. Although this is one of its main differentiators, the stylus has so far been sold separately and it doesn’t look like this new T-Mobile offering bundles it in either. The device is priced at $299.99 when purchased with new compatible individual plans fo

Libratone Live and Lounge AirPlay speakers comes to the US

Image
Libratone introduced its Live and Lounge AirPlay-equipped speakers earlier this summer, but has finally announced today the availability of the speakers in the US. The high-end wireless speakers feature a sleek and simple design fully covered with soft Italian cashmere in a variety of colors. Equipped with AirPlay, they can stream music from iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch devices as well as songs via iTunes on Macs and PCs. The Libratone Lounge is the larger of the two, meant to be used in the living room and includes a 3.5mm input for other devices. It measures about 40-inches wide, 8.7-inches tall, and 4.7-inches deep and is designed to be placed against a wall. The smaller more versatile Libratone Live measures 18.5-inch tall, 7.7-inches wide, and 6-inches deep and is designed to be placed vertically freestanding on a surface. Both feature high-end acoustics and carefully selected materials, which are reflected in the pricing. The Libratone Lounge is priced at $1,299 and is ava

Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed open-source coming in weeks

Image
In what’s shaping up to be the biggest launch of an Android version yet, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has had many rumors surrounding it, including one that persists in saying that the OS will not allow customizations – not only is that not true, today there’s confirmation that the completely open source version of the OS will be out in just weeks. Have a look back at our Complete Ice Cream Sandwich Launch Q and A with Android Authorities to see the answer to the second question, and head below to see the answer to the first – or just head below to find out everything you need to know. First have a look at this short set of snips from the Q and A and find out for yourself what it means to be open source – and how that’s different from customizable UI (this in this case the User Interface that manufacturers put on their versions of Android devices such at TouchWiz for Samsung and Sense for HTC.) Participants here are Matias Duarte, Hugo Barra, and Gabe Cohen, each of them Android au

Nokia plans 2012 US return, hints at Windows 8 tablet

Image
In an interview with Bloomberg, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop revealed that the company plans to make a triumphant return in the US market starting early 2012. That means the lovely Nokia Lumia 800, which will be going on sale in Europe this month, won’t be hitting the US until next year accompanied by a massive marketing campaign. Elop also hinted at the possibility of a Nokia Windows 8 tablet. “Our intention is to come back in the United States and grow significant share in this market,” said Elop. “Our plans are to be very competitive and to go head-on with the appropriate devices at the appropriate price points. We know we need to get volume moving and we need from that to develop economies of scale. And then as we do more and more differentiation, we expand gross margin.” Elop also didn’t dismiss the possibility of entering the tablet market, which is a move that has been speculated on in the past. Back in May, Eldar Murtazin, an industry insider with a good track record for breakin

Siri doesn’t hog data, averages 63KB per query

Image
Siri was introduced with Apple’s iOS 5 and iPhone 4S as a new intelligent assistant feature that performs certain tasks and retrieves information via natural voice commands. Since the service works by communicating with Apple’s servers, the question has come up of just how much data does Siri consume and how that may affect folks on limited data plans. Well, tests have been done and thankfully Siri’s on a lean diet. ArsTechnica conducted a total of 11 tests split between two groups of queries. The first being local queries needing only data to interpret the spoken input such as dictation and setting up reminders. The second group involved queries to return results from the internet, such as through Wolfram Alpha or Google. The local tasks used an average of 36.7KB per query while the internet queries averaged about 94.72KB. Tests were also done on text dictations for two short e-mails and two text messages, which yielded an average of 72.5KB. The longer the message, the more data wa

RIM re-introduces BBM Music, release promised inside 24 hours

Image
Though it’s not the first time we’ve heard of BBM Music, or heck, even the first time we’ve seen it, it is the first time RIM is promising the software to BlackBerry users for real, and it’ll be out today! All you BlackBerry users have promised that the BBM Music app will be available for downloading inside the next 24 hours, (starting this morning, I suppose, since they’ve not named a specific time,) to all you citizens of the United States, Australia, and of course Canada. The rest of the world is next on the list, but again hasn’t been listed for release quite yet. From what you’ve heard about this service in the past, there are only a few modifications for this final release. The first of these is just a clarification more than a modification really, that being a note on how when you’ve got a BBM Music Premium subscription, you can grab much more than 50 songs. When you start your music profile, you choose 50 songs. After this, you can add as much music as you like by adding fri

Stealth brings LPC-125LPFM teeny-tiny PC to the market

Image
If there’s one factor that’s to be commended without hesitation about the modern world’s current selection of technological breakthroughs, its the fantastically tiny nature of devices like this new computer from Stealth. This is the next in line unit from the small family that is Stealth Computers. It’s a 4.6 x 6.1 x 2.0 inch unit that’ll sit in your hand without a problem at 1.2lbs (0.54kg) – that’s small, and it’s no deck of cards inside this similarly sized box. Also note that this is the smallest PC the group has yet offered. It’s a noise-free computer, works at 10-26V of DC power, and some hot power under the hood with the Intel D525 Pineview 1.8GHz Dual Core processor. What’s this device made for? They say it’s made for embedded and in-vehicle applications as well as mobile applications. Plug in what you need, make it work for you. You’ve got Gigabit LAN, 3-USB, 1-external express card slot, Audio In/Out, 2-PS/2 ports, 2-Serial, and Video. And there’s a rear-locking DC power

U.S. Navy Electromagnetic Railgun fires milestone 1000th shot

Image
The United States Navy has a gun that’s this week reached a milestone, but before we discuss that, you’ve got to know that is works with more kinetic energy than a one-ton vehicle moving at 100 miles per hour. This week they’ve fired the gun for the 1,000th time, this marking a point quite close to production and real-world deployment. Though we’ve been using railguns in first person shooter video games for some time now, they’ve only been theoretically possible until very recently – and starting very soon, they’ll be in use by the United States armed forces. Right now researchers at the Naval Research Labs Charged Particle Physics branch are “firing up to 15 shots per week on the laboratory’s experimental railgun, researchers at NRL perform detailed testing and analysis of rails and armatures, providing S&T expertise to the Navy program that is directly applicable to tests at large-scale power levels” – this noted by Dr. Robert Meger, head of the Naval Research Labs’ Charged Pa

Angry Birds tops half a billion downloads: are you still playing?

Image
This week Rovio has announced that not only had they jumped above 500 million downloads with Angry Birds, they’d therefore become the one with the most downloaded game in the history of gaming. As it appears that the Guinness Book of World Records doesn’t have such a listing, I suppose we’ll have to take their word for it. Of course that’s not the only statistic Rovio is offering up this week, they going on to note that their users average about 300 million minutes of playing time a day, that equaling out to 200,000 years of playing time so far in total for the Angry Birds suite. Here’s our question for you: are you amongst these people? And furthermore – do you still play? While Angry Birds was certainly an obsession of yours truly through the late months of 2010 and the early months of 2011, interest has certainly waned for the entire SlashGear crew over the summer. If you’ve been an addict of the game in the past, are you still part of the Angry community? Did you download the la

Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch released

Image
Google has released its official Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, promising faster access to messages, better visibility of important emails, and a UI that’s designed from the ground up for a touch interface. As expected, the app supports push notifications and sounds, along with full inbox search, and on the iPad there’s a split-pane view which shows both inbox and message preview. Update: First impressions aren’t so hot… read on for more details Auto-complete of email addresses from Gmail contacts is supported, along with your iOS device’s Contacts, and there’s attachment support as well. Some of the features we’re used to from the desktop browser are present too, like Priority Inbox for those content to let Google flag up their most important mail, threaded conversations and the usual bevy of archiving, labelling, starring, deleting and spamming tools. Swiping support to see labels has been integrated, pulling out a label list from the side of the screen, and there’s

T-Mobile BlackBerry Torch 9810 priced for November 7 launch

Image
T-Mobile USA has announced pricing and availability for the BlackBerry Torch 9810, the BlackBerry 7 smartphone that pairs both a sizable touchscreen and a slide-out physical keyboard. Set to hit the carrier’s 3G network on November 7, the T-Mobile Torch 9810 will be priced at $249.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. That’s certainly not cheap, and we’re left wondering whether T-Mobile actually expects to sell any of these particular Torches when they hit store shelves next week. Your money will get you a 1.2GHz processor, 3.2-inch VGA display and 5-megapixel camera supporting 720p HD video recording. For the full run-down on the BlackBerry Torch 9810, check out the SlashGear review. We found the 9810 to answer most of our criticisms of the original Torch 9800, but still not quite bring the smartphone up to speed with its primary competition.

GTA:V Trailer Revealed

Image
The first trailer for the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto V has been revealed, with the action again taking place in California in the fictional city of Los Santos. Rockstar games began teasing the title last month, prompting a huge batch of leaks and rumors about just exactly what we could expect. Among the rumors, we’ve heard that you’ll be able to play as multiple characters, though talk of Rockstar using Los Angeles rather than its fictional counterpart obviously hasn’t panned out. We’re also yet to see the final line-up of cars you’ll be able to drive. Still, plenty of excitement, since this is one of the top titles on many gamers’ wish-lists right now. No word on a release date quite yet, so while we wait don’t forget to check out our rundown of the top five things we’re hoping to see Rockstar include in GTA:V.

Square launches Card Case app for hands-free iPhone wallet

Image
Square has a new app out of the iPhone users out there called the Card Case digital wallet app. The new app allows the user to complete purchases at participating stores without having to pull the smartphone out of the case. The version of the app available now is 1.1. It opens up a tab with the merchant for payments automatically when the users is close to a store that uses the service. The storeowner is able to see the users face on their side of the app and then when the charges are made the money is automatically pulled from the debit card or credit card associated with the user’s app. Square is the company that offers the small credit card reader already for processing payments on the go and has a lot of customers. It has a large user base that might potentially be interested in the new app. This sounds like an interesting offering, I wonder how many stores and consumers will use the app. Would you use something like this? It seems like an easy way to pay and once you have a

Creepy Fraunhofer spider robot can help scout hazardous areas

Image
Sadly, few of my fellow SlashGear geeks are familiar with the flick Saturn 5 and the massive case of the creeps that Hector gave me as a kid. Therefore, they can’t really understand how creepy this spider robot is to me. Granted this spider bot can’t go insane with lust for Farah and wear my head as a mask so it’s not so bad. The idea behind this spider robot prototype is that the highly mobile nature of a spider design will allow the bot to traverse small and cramped spaces where humans can’t go. The researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute that designed the robot envision it being used in hazardous environments and situations like industrial plants with gas leaks or radiation danger. The spider is designed with a range of ways to move around. Apparently, some of the designs can jump to get around obstacles. The jumping motion is possible thanks to the design that has hydraulically operated bellows drives that serve as joints. High levels of body pressure built up allow the fluid

Epson, Avery Dennison, and Skin Wraps custom wrap a Ferrari 458 Italia

Image
I already mentioned a couple of the cool cars that have surfaced at SEMA this year. Another awesome car that is on hand at the show is a Ferrari 458 Italia that has a custom wrap. The wrap was applied in partnership with Epson, Avery Dennison, and SkinWraps to showcase what you can pull off with one of the large format Epson printers. The Ferrari is sitting in the Epson booth at SEMA and is called “Burning Down The House.” The wrap was printed by SkinWraps using an Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 printer. The print media was Avery MPI 1005 SuperCast. The wrap completely changes the look of the Ferrari. The coolest part is that after the show is over the car will be unwrapped quickly and returned to its natural form with no issues. The Epson printer can print to the Avery media in 64-inch wide swaths with photographic image quality. The maximum image resolution is 1440 x 1440 dpi. The Avery media is 2-mil cast vinyl.

New Opera Mini 6.5 and Mobile 11.5 browsers launch

Image
If you are looking for a new browser for your smartphone, the latest version of Opera Mini is now available. The new version for the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Java-enabled phones is Opera Mini 6.5. If you are using a Symbian S60 smartphone, the browser for you is Opera Mobile 11.5. The big upgrade in these browsers is the ability for the user to track data use. The idea is that by having the browser track your data use, you can stop huge data bills from your phone company. Opera claims that the new version of the browser can save you up to 90% of data use. The browser is fast enough that Opera claims you can surf without 3D and still enjoy your smartphone. The browser tracks both total data use and temporary use. The new versions also have a star in the address field that allows you to add bookmarks to the new Speed dial shortcuts. This allows for fast access to your favourite websites. The speed dial adds up to nine icons for your favourite sites that are presented as soon as

Android Market and Google+ updates prep for Ice Cream Sandwich

Image
We already know that the latest version of Android is coming early in 2012. Several devices have been announced to get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update in “early” 2012. We have already been though a Q&A on Android ICS previously that you can check out if you have questions on the OS. Google is now getting some of its own apps ready for ICS to hit early next year. Yesterday a new update to the Android Market started to appear called v3.3.11. There was some scuttlebutt that claimed the new update didn’t work well on Honeycomb devices so be warned. The new update brings tweaked settings like the ability to download auto-updates over WiFi only to save your data allowance on big updates. Changes also include a tweaked UI and more. Along with the update to the Android Market to get ready for ICS, the Google+ app is also getting an update. The update for Google+ is available now and offers improvements for battery life, changes to navigation, improvements for notifications a

LG calls own Optimus 2X Ice Cream Sandwich denial “rumors”

Image
LG has backtracked on its suggestions that the LG Optimus 2X will not get an official upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with the company saying it “firmly denies the rumors” despite the original source being its own Indian Facebook team. According to LG’s new statement, the company “is currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X” but will only release an official timescale once Google has allowed it access to Android 4.0. Controversy began back in October, when LG’s Indian Facebook team apparently confirmed that the Optimus 2X would not be in line for Ice Cream Sandwich after a question from a user. The news prompted a firestorm of anti-LG feeling, with users – many still waiting on an official Gingerbread update for the Optimus 2X – loudly announcing their intention not to buy any of the company’s devices in the future. What’s unclear at this stage is whether LG will, indeed, deliver on an ICS update. “In the process of planning” isn’t ne

Viewsonic launches 23-inch V3D231 3D LCD using passive glasses

Image
Viewsonic has been around for a long time making all sorts of display products from LCDs and TVs to projectors and more. The company has a new LCD for the computer user that it has announced that offers 3D technology. Rather than having, to use expensive and bulky active technology glasses. The screen measures in at 23-inches wide. It has a 20 million:1 dynamic contrast ratio and integrated SRS Premium sound speakers. The 3D glasses used are polarized glasses. I would bet that the glasses left over after 3D movies at the theater would work with this display. Connectivity options include a HDMI 1.4a input for 3D sources, VGA, and DVI-D. The display comes with software to convert 2D to 3D as well. The native resolution is 1920 x 1080 and the typical contrast ratio is 1000:1. The panel response time is 2ms so it should work well for gaming. The V3D231 comes with one set of polarized glasses and a set of clip on glasses to prescription lens wearers. It is on sale in Europe right now f

Hyundai Genesis Coupe with 5.0 TAU V8 hits SEMA

Image
I have seen the Hyundai Genesis coupe up close and it looks good. The versions that pack Brembo brakes are especially appealing. Sadly, the car is packing an underpowered V6 under the hood, which completely ruins the deal for me. There is a version of the Genesis sedan that has a 5.0 TAU V8 under the hood and that is the engine that the Coupe really needs. SEMA is gong on right now and with the show comes a bunch of custom cars from just about any brand you can think of. Racer Rhys Millen has taken one of the cool looking Genesis coupe, removed that V6, and crammed the TAU V8 into the engine bay. The car also gets other mods for an extra 20 hp out of the V8 along with mods for looks and handling to round out the package. The car is a showpiece for the new line of RMR Genesis coupe parts that Rhys Millen Racing is producing. The car is tweaked inside and out with Sparco seats, new wheels, and a lot more. I would like to know the performance capability of the car. There is no indica

Raptor LK1 gaming keyboard is waterproof and cheap

Image
If you are a computer gamer, you should have an idea that normal computer peripherals like mice and keyboards are typically really bad for gaming. Keyboards that aren’t meant for gaming are known to leave your character moving thanks to ghosting after you take your fingers off the WASD keys. If you want a cool gaming keyboard, but you are on a budget check out the Raptor LK1. The keyboard has a normal layout for the keys and has some interesting features I haven’t seen in other keyboards. The new feature is called Fast-Mover Technology. The tech will automatically lock keys when you remove the key tops for gaming. That way you can pull the keys you don’t need and not have to worry that you will hit the wrong button. The keyboard has anti-ghosting tech allowing six key presses at once. It comes with red WASD keys to make them easier to see in the dark. The keys are made to be quiet when pressed and the key removal tool is included. It can also resist spills so you can eat and game

Subaru BRZ STI concept looks nothing like the production car sadly

Image
I admit I saw this Subaru BRZ STi concept car noted the rear-wheel drive and light weight and got a little excited. It looks really cool and will have an engine with more power than its siblings in the Toyota and Scion livery. This is the one of the first RWD cars that some of these brands have had in a long time since Subaru is known for AWD, and Toyota and Scion go for more FWD cars. All the flares actually look really good to my eyes and then the sad comes in. Apparently, Subaru has the concept covered 100% in body panels that will never see production. We do have some specs of the car to check out. The three different versions will apparently each weigh in at a lithe 2662 pounds, which is about 1000 pounds lighter than the RWD Ford Mustang GT. The Toyota and Scion versions will reportedly have around 200 hp. That isn’t much power at all, but the car is very light so it should have decent performance. The Subaru BRZ STi flavor is said to get more power with an extra 100 hp putt

Speakal iKurv iPhone docking station unveiled

Image
I can’t really think of the Speakal brand without thinking of the cutely odd iPig dock for the iPhone and iPod touch that looked like a pig with touch control ears. Speakal has plenty of other strange and interesting docking devices though. The latest to come for the company is the iKurv designed to look like a spaceship. I don’t really see any space ship cues in the design, but it looks cool nonetheless. The design has a round tube that is curved around the speaker dock. The docking station will work with the iPhone 4S, 4, and 3 models along with dockable iPods. It will also work with other music devices as well. The iKurv is launching in black only, but it will also be offered later in pink, blue, white, yellow, and green colors. The black and other color devices will sell for $79.99. It will charge the Apple devices while it plays and has 20W of power for premium sound. It has a LCD display and four levels of ambient light and a video output for hooking to a TV. The frequency r

Boeing leases OPF-3 facility in Florida for CST-100 capsule program

Image
It was sad to see the space shuttle fleet get retired after decades of watching in wonder as the space ships blasted into space. It’s a good thing for tech heads and space fans that the space program isn’t dead with projects like the Boeing CST-100 crew capsule underway. The CST-100 is Boeing’s bid to win the contract for future manned space vehicles. Boeing has announced that it has signed an agreement with Space Florida to use a former NASA facility in Florida called OPF 3 or Orbiter Processing Facility 3. This is a massive building at Kennedy Space Center where NASA used to process the space shuttle and is one of three on the property. NASA turned the facility over to Space Florida to operate the facility at no cost to NASA. Space Florida then turned around and leased the facility to Boeing in a deal worth up to $50 million. The CST-100 capsule would be manufactured, tested, and operated out of the facility. The huge catch to the whole deal is that Boeing still needs to win the

NASA working on tractor beam tech for capturing dust and other particles

Image
Tractor beams aren’t a new idea to any one that has watched or read science fiction. The tech in fiction can do things like capture space ships and lots more. In the real world, science is trying to capture much smaller things with tractor beams. Laser beams have been able to be used to capture things for a while on the nano and microscopic scale. Lasers can be used for instance to manipulate single cells, molecules, viruses, and other tiny objects. The tractor beam can be used to push or pull these little objects. NASA is working on tractor beam tech not for manipulating cells in space, but to help its rovers on the surface of some distant planet to capture samples. NASA hopes to one day perfect a small-scale tractor beam that it can fit to future rovers allowing the rover to capture samples of things like dust and gas. We have talked about tractor beams before when Chinese physicists were working on the tech for use in moving particles at the nano level.

Logitech Mini Boombox mobile speaker debuts

Image
Logitech has more accessories and peripherals for computers than I can count. The latest product to come from the company is this new device called the Logitech Mini Boombox. The device is a Bluetooth speaker that will pair with any Bluetooth audio source for music or voice chats. HTC grabs lead in US smartphone sales

Image
Consumers in America love the smartphone and for the last quarter, there have been some changes in the smartphone market here at home. HTC has grabbed the lead in the smartphone market from Samsung and HTC is now the top smartphone brand in the US. As HTC has grown, Samsung and Apple have both declined in the market. Part of the blame for sagging iPhone sales could be laid at the feet of reduced demand for the iPhone 4 thanks to people holding off last quarter waiting for the iPhone 4S to hit stores. It also appears that HTC was able to grab some of the folks defecting from failing RIM. HTC nabbed 24% of the global smartphone maker in Q3 while Samsung had 21% and Apple took third with 20% of the global market leaving RIM a measly 9% share. Business Week reports that one of the things that helped RIM in the States was strong relationships with US carriers and the fact that HTC sells its high-end smartphones for less than Samsung. Things might not looks as rosy for HTC in Q4 as the c

Nokia fingers ST-Ericsson NovaThor for Windows Phones

Image
Back in May, we had mentioned that Nokia would be using Qualcomm processors inside its range of Windows Phone handsets. At the time, we also reported that Nokia would be using the ST-Ericsson chips in at least a few of its Windows Phone devices. Today we learn that Nokia has chosen the ST-Ericsson dual core NovaThor for its future Windows Phone devices. There is no indication that the NovaThor will be exclusive, Nokia will likely use both Qualcomm and ST-Ericsson chips in their devices. Presumably, the ST-Ericsson chips will be used in the cheaper Windows phone devices from Nokia. The NovaThor range has three dual core parts with the U9500, U8500, and the U5500. The U9500 and U8500 parts both support 1080p video recording and 20MP still photos. The U9500 will also support dual 1280 x 768 screens at once and 3D graphics. The U9500 also has support for TV standards as an option. It uses an ARM Cortex-A9 processor, LP-DDR2 interface, and ARM Mali 400 GPU with Neon CPU extensions.

Farhan Akhtar compared to Raj Kapoor

Image
Farhan Akhtar was quiet taken aback last week while conducting an interview with an international news channel. Like all international networks they were travelling with a specific list of people to meet and Farhan Akhtar was on top of their list as they all had seen Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. When Farhan Akhtar agreed to do the interview, he had no clue what was in store for him. Since the international network didn't know the language, they had interpreter anchor with them to conduct the interview. Throughout the interview, they kept referring to him as Raj Kapoor. Farhan was extremely embarrassed and confused about this. First he thought they were mistaking him for another actor or that he was someone else. He didn't know how to react at all. However, when the interpreter asked him the question, there would be no reference of Raj Kapoor. He just couldn't understand what the confusion was and since the camera was rolling he didn't want to disturb the flow. Finally,

How Paoli bagged Vivek Agnihotri's thriller Hate Story

Image
When Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt were scouting for a leading lady in Jannat 2, they had zeroed in on Paoli Dam, a happening actress in Bengali cinema, after things didn't quite work out with Prachi Desai. However, after a sudden shift in developments, ex-Miss India Esha Gupta stepped in instead, hence making one wonder if Dam's debut in Bollywood was jinxed. Thankfully that was not the case to be for the dusky actress who, after scintillating with her bold act in films coming from the East, has now been signed by Vivek Agnihotri who would be launching her in Hate Story. "Yes, Paoli has been signed for Hate Story. It is being designed as Bollywood's first bona fide thriller. The film required someone who didn't come with a baggage of an image and was game for some explicit scenes that required one to shed her inhibitions. However, all of it had to be dealt in a classy way and hence a real actress with a great body and attitude to boast was needed. This is where

"Shah Rukh & I are already discussing a sequel to Ra.One" - Anubhav Sinha

Image
Exhausted and sapped after the release of Ra.One, Anubhav Sinha relives the 5-year old experience Ra.One is already a huge franchise. A sequel? I won't deny Shah Rukh and I have already spoken about a sequel. Ra.One has taken so much out of us. Now it all depends on how successful it becomes. It's a miracle, I've survived a super-hero film. I've given five years of my life to it. Has your son Shlok seen Ra.One as yet? He watched it at the Dubai premiere this week with me. In fact Shlok and Shah Rukh's son Aryan were the chief advisers over the technical aspects of Ra.One. Aryan saw portions this morning (Sunday) and had valuable comments to make.

Kangna finds friend and supporter in Chirag

Image
There is good news for Kangna. The pretty woman seemed to have lost out on her list of friends once her friction with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn was all over the place. One wondered how the future would look like especially post the Rascals fiasco. However, at this moment of low, she is getting support from the unlikeliest of co-stars - Chirag Paswan. "Together they would be seen soon in Miley Na Miley Hum and Chirag has told Kangna in no uncertain terms that her earlier experiences, especially the ones that were not so good, don't quite matter to him. He feels that Kangna did a huge favour to him by agreeing to act in his film when he was just a newcomer while she was a star in her own right. Hence a Rascals or miniscule roles in Double Dhamaal or a No Problem don't really matter to him", says a close associate. Such words of reassurance coming from a male co-star could well be a sign of relief for Kangna who has been mostly off-media for quite some time now and

Ranbir rubbishes similarities between Rockstar and Walk The Line

Image
As it happens with majority of biggies, as they come closer to their release date, all sorts of speculations and rumours start making the rounds around the film's subject as well as content. Rockstar hasn't been spared either; what with a few wondering whether the film seeks it's inspiration from its Western counterpart. The movie in question here? Walk The Line, a musical that saw quite a few awards and immense international acclaim coming its way. Says an industry observer, "When you see the promos of Rockstar, you end up remembering Walk The Line. Just like Rockstar, that film too featured a pop-star who turns big out of nowhere. However on finding success, he gets involved in drugs and women before the love of his life saves him from complete downfall." For the uninitiated, this Oscar winner film with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in lead roles was a chronicle of country music legend Johnny Cash's life. Though movies of this genre generally rev

Vidya's 'jhatkas' catch attention...again!

Image
The television campaign for The Dirty Picture has taken a full frontal approach (pun intended) with Vidya Balan's brazen act crossing even those boundaries that seemed unassailable when the first theatrical promo came out recently. While the makers seem to be pushing the envelope with every passing juncture, the latest being her song ' Ooh La La ', many in the industry are questioning if Vidya's moves are justified for a film that boasts of such an A-grade setup. "This is unbelievable," says a prominent director on condition of anonymity. "I understand that the makers of The Dirty Picture are attempting celebrating the life of a sexy screen diva, but what we see is beyond imagination. I guess what we saw so far in true terms was 'just a trailer'. I suppose it will take a while before we come to terms with Vidya Balan's daring new avatar." A trade guru points out, "The tantalizing promos have done the initial trick. The makers ha
