DROID BIONIC Review

Image
Smartphone users are a demanding lot. Give them the latest version of Android, big displays and 4G LTE connectivity, and they ask for a dual-core processor as well. Until now it’s been too much to ask of Verizon, but all that changed with the arrival of the much-anticipated DROID BIONIC by Motorola this week. Announced back at CES in January and then variously updated and delayed since, Verizon promises that this is the fastest 4G phone around. Is this finally the LTE Android to satisfy speed-freaks? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Hardware

Will Apple CEO Tim Cook make a Game Console?

Image
As many of you know, I’ve often been critical on these pages of Apple’s inability to fully capitalize on the living room. I’m a firm believer that the company has a real opportunity to be a dominant force in home entertainment, and yet, it hasn’t done anything to prove that. So far, the Apple TV is the best offering it has, and most would agree, that that device is still just a “hobby.” Exactly why Apple has been so loath to fully double down on the living room is anyone’s guess. Maybe it’s because the company is so focused on mobile products, like the iPad and iPhone. Or perhaps it simply doesn’t see any opportunity in the living room. However, my guess is that Steve Jobs didn’t see a good reason to chase after the dominance of another space until his company could fully cement its position in the mobile market. What’s more, I’m not convinced that Jobs wanted Apple to be another Sony, offering a host of home-theater products that only some people like. And while I understand that idea

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch pre-orders at Walmart for only $99

Image
Walmart has begun pre-orders for the Now Network’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S II known as the Epic 4G Touch and it’s offering it up at an awesome price. Originally said to cost $199 with a new two-year contract, the handset can now be had from Walmart for only $99 on contract. The much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II made its US debut on August 30 and is expected to arrive on the nation’s third largest carrier on September 16. It will be the first of the three US version to launch. The other two will be from T-Mobile and AT&T, each with slight differences in hardware, mainly in the exterior look and screen size. As the WiMAX-toting Epic 4G Touch, the device will feature a larger 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a slightly more rounded chassis. Inside, all the powerful specs are about the same with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB onboard storage. It also has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus, LED flash

Android Jelly Bean to follow Ice Cream Sandwich

Image
In what can only be described as totally making alphabetical sense, J for Jelly Bean will follow I for Ice Cream in Google’s mobile operating system line we’re hearing today. This information comes from a tip given to ThisIsMyNext’s Chris Ziegler and without a doubt is one of the most sparse tips we’ve published all week, this right next to the Nexus Prime (or whatever you want to call it by the time it’s released) carrying what we expect will be Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. What Jelly Bean will hold for Android will likely be improvements over the Ice Cream Sandwich platform which is set to unite the two factions of Android, that being tablet and smartphone, in the coming months. Android Jelly Bean, coming up next! What we’ve been hearing about the Nexus Prime, what we expect will be the next hero phone for Google as created by Samsung, is that it’s got a support page already and that Samsung has it in more than one placeinside their webpage manifest. You’ll certainly continue to b

Xbox 360 dashboard update beta in October

Image
Microsoft is getting ready to launch a major update for its Xbox 360 dashboard later this fall, with beta testing to roll out in October. The revamped interface will mean easier, faster navigation, and integration of more Kinect voice commands to search for movies, music, games, and more. VentureBeat got an early preview and had generally positive things to say: “Overall, it’s a big improvement on the user interface.” The upgrade is all about making the process of accessing content much faster and making content more discoverable. This is especially important because of the growing amount of content on the Xbox 360, which has already gone way beyond just games. The interface redesign looks like a step towards merging Xbox LIVE with Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8. The new dashboard interface uses large tiles that are reminiscent of the Windows Phone 7 Live Tiles and the scrolling is sideways rather than up and down, similar to what we’ve seen with the Windows 8 tablet UI. The update also

Samsung Reported as Top TV Brand in North America 1st Half of 2011

Image
When you’re the king of anything, it’s important that other people understand and know that you’re the king. When you’re Samsung, and you’re the king of television sales in North America over the first half of 2011, the people that are going to know about it, especially when it comes to investigating the legitimacy of such a claim, are DisplaySearch, Quixel Research, and iSuppli. Together they’ve produced findings today that tell a story that can only be construed one way: if you’re an avid consumer, Samsung is more than likely sitting in your living room displaying all of your HDMI-converted content through a gigantic screen TV right this minute. In the report released today, Samsung has been reported to have a 20.6 percent share of the TV market in North America, a 1.2 percentage point increased year over year compared to 2010, and its highest market-share position since the year 2009. As far as units shipped and revenue percentage for LED TVs during this same 1st-half of 2011 period

Netflix now supports all Android 2.2 and 2.3 devices

Image
Netflix has just updated its mobile app to support all Android 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread devices. Until now, the app has only supported a very limited selection of Android devices with the last update to version 1.3expanding support from 9 to 24 devices. The update today will finally bring Netflix app support to almost all Android devices. This is great news for Netflix subscribers who have had to rely on leaked APKs to get the app running on unsupported Android phones. Unfortunately, the update still doesn’t support all Android tablets, which have much more suitably sized screens for enjoying a Netflix subscription. So far, the only tablets that support Netflix are the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 and the Lenovo ThinkPad tablet. The app allows subscribers to stream movies and TV shows over WiFi or 3G connections as well as to manage their DVD queues.

Cygnett iPad 2 / iPhone 4 cases UrbanShield, WorkMate Pro, and Lavish Earth Reviews

Image
It’s not often that we cover cases for any sort of device, especially Apple products, not because they don’t deserve coverage of course, but because there’s just so darn many of them out there! Every once in a while there’s a group that brings a combination of materials and form, though, that we just cannot resist giving a little extra time and a few words to. Today that attention belongs to Cygnett, an Australian-based company that will be launching their first wave of products in the USA this season, starting with the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. Take a peek at brushed aluminum, polycarbonate, and leather-styled coverings for all your iDevice covering needs! Lavish Earth for iPad 2

Apple seeds iTunes 10.5 beta 8 and iWork beta 3 for iOS

Image
Apple today released iTunes 10.5 beta 8 and iWork beta 3 for iOS to its registered developers. The updates fix several performance bugs and brings new enhancements to the iTunes Match feature. There is also continuing integration of the iCloud as Apple moves towards its public launch of iOS 5, expected to be sometime in late September or early October. The iTunes 10.5 beta 8 will be needed to continue using the iTunes Match feature and developers are encouraged to sign up for the $24.99 per year service. For testing the service, however, developers do get extra months of service in return. The iWork beta 3 for iOS also brings some bug fixes and will ultimately include document syncing with the iCloud. However, missing from this latest batch of updates is a new beta for the iOS 5 itself. This suggests that Apple is winding down on development for iOS 5 and is mainly working out the integration of other Apple software with the platform and fine tuning its cloud-based features.

Fring gets Google+ Hangouts-style “Playgrounds” group video chat

Image
Popular four-way video chat app, Fring, has just added a new feature that they’re calling “Playgrounds.” This addition seems to mimic the Google+ Hangouts feature in that it lets people more freely and casually join in on group video chats. But Fring takes it a step further by making Playgrounds group chats completely open so that people who join in do not have to know each other first. Also unlike Google+ Hangouts where groups as large as ten could be on a single group video chat, Fring’s Playgrounds are still limited to its traditional format of four participants at a time. Playgrounds are created around shared interests. They can be created by anyone and anyone can join them. If this sounds all too open for you and you’d rather avoid the chance meeting with a stranger keen on exposing themselves, Fring still offers its usual private group chat features that lets you chat with up to three other friends. The app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

Sharp announces 3D Aquos SH8298U Android phone with dual 8MP cameras

Image
Sharp has announced today a new 3D-capable Android smartphone, called the Aquos SH8298U. It features a display that supports glasses-free 3D and has dual cameras on the back of 8-megapixels each for you to capture both 3D stills and videos. It also comes in some fun colors, in either white or red. The Aquos SH8298U features a 4.2-inch qHD display, a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB onboard storage, and a 1240mAh battery. The specs are less stellar than those of the dual-core LG Optimus 3D and HTC EVO 3D, but the Aquos does offer 8-megapixel cameras while the other two offer only 5-megapixel cameras. The device will come running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will be launching on SoftBank in Japan. However, an exact date of availability hasn’t been revealed yet and neither has pricing. Availability for other markets such as the US are also unlikely.

Adobe finally brings Flash support to iOS devices

Image
Adobe has finally figured out a workaround to bring Flash video support to the iOS platform, where Apple adamantly refuses the format. During the IBC trade show today, the company unveiled the Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Adoble Flash Acess 3.0 products that will allow publishers to deliver Flash content to iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. The Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 and Flash Access 3.0 will essentially process the Flash video on a server that is then able to deliver the same source video to a variety of platforms including both Apple devices and Flash-compatible devices. This will make life much easier for publishers and is done through HTTP Dynamic Streaming or HTTP Live Streaming, which are both compatible with iOS. So, it’s not exactly real Flash support on iOS, but it could actually deliver some benefits over native support. Instead of relying on the device’s processor to render, the Flash Media Server 4.5 does all the work, repackaging the Flash content for strea

NIKE Teases Separate 2015 Re-Release of 2011 Back to the Future Shoe, Power Laces intact [Video]

Image
If there’s one oddity that’s been taking the tech world by storm over these past 72 hours or so, it’s been the 2011 NIKE MAG shoe, straight out of the classic science fiction comedy film Back to the Future II. In this movie it’s Michael J. Fox in his most recognizable role of his career, Marty McFly, sporting the “NIKE MAG” sneakers in all their futuristic glory. We’ve got full details now on a 2011 release of the shoe, including the awesome fact that proceeds will be going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the end – but today a whole new bombshell may well have nearly slipped right under our noses: a “lost scene” from the Back to the Future movies that portends another release of this legendary sneaker set in the future: September 8th, 2015 to be exact, where they’ll include the most excellent “Power Laces” feature missing from the 2011 limited edition drop! In this ad spot you’ll be glad to know that a whole slew of your best Back to the Future / NIKE / NBA personalities make their

HTC Invites Press to September 20th Event, Android Handset likely

Image
It’s time for another bigtime event hosted by none other than HTC, manufacturers of mobile devices of many varieties, though we can expect Android for this specific date. Note before we go any further that it’s Fashion Week in the city this event will be taking place in, New York City that is, so a “celebrate in style” note in the invite is more than appropriate. Earlier this month we got some hands-on time with two Windows Phone 7 HTC devices, the HTC Radar and the much larger HTC Titan, both of them at IFA 2011 in Berlin. What we’ve got left are leaks and notes galore on all sorts of devices, many if not all indications here pointing directly toward an Android device of some sort or another. First, and least likely, is the HTC Jetstream, a 10-inch tablet with a tablet-based version of HTC’s Sense user interface and a release on AT&T inside this month as well. It’s unlikely that they’d hold an event for this device since it’s already technically available for purchase at AT&T.

'Viswaroopam' tidbits in here

Image
IG had earlier reported that Kamal Haasan plays a terrorist in his forthcoming 'Viswaroopam' and now there's more on this front. It is said that Kamal Haasan and baddie, Rahul Bose will play terrorists in this film. It may be mentioned that Rahul Bose was spotted with a beard a few days back. In fact, those who have spotted Kamal at the huge set in Old Mahaballipuram Road have failed to recognise him due to his flawless make up, of course this is not a surprise as we are referring to the perfectionist of K'town in here. So what about the rumours that did rounds that Kamal plays a CBI official? Well, that's there as well since it is said Kamal Haasan plays an investigating official and he dons the role of a terrorist to undercover a murder case, while Rahul Bose plays the actual terrorist in the film. With such a bold script and Ulaganayagan on board in another avatar, what else will one want from 'Viswaroopam'... We'll get back shortly with mo

Kollywood grapevine was abuzz that during the shoot of 'Nanban', Ileana fractured her leg while practicing a dance step under choreographer Farah Khan's guidance. However, all that has been rubbished as baseless rumours by the team. While Ileana was shooting for 'Nanban', it was rumoured that the lead lady fractured her leg and she will not able to shoot for a couple of weeks! Film Chamber reacts to FEFSI's charges

Image
The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) has condemned the Film Employees' Federation of South India (FEFSI) for coming out with a statement which leveled various charges against it. In a statement, the SIFCC said, "We conducted talks with FEFSI regarding the increase of wages to workers only after producers from all the four south Indian languages asked us to do so. This is a common thing." The statement further said: "In the year 2000 also, it was the SIFCC which held the wage revision talks. Since no amicable solution was found during the talks this time, we called for a strike from September 7 and the decision was accepted by all producers." On Thursday, FEFSI secretary G Siva said in a statement, "We don't have any problem with film producers in Tamil Nadu. At the same time, we request the SIFCC to stop interfering in our issues." He also said the workers were not demanding huge hike from the producers.

Murugadoss gets ready for Vijay film

Image
With two big tasks before AR Murugadoss getting completed by this month, the director is expected to start his next film soon, for which he would join hands with Ilayathalapathy Vijay for the first time. "Murugadoss's maiden production venture Engeyum Eppodhum is seeing the light of the day on September 16. Six days after that, the much awaited audio launch of his 7aam Arivu will take place on September 22," sources say. Though the Suriya-starrer is scheduled to release in the last week of October for Deepavali, the director will be technically free from September last week itself. So he would start the Vijay-starrer in October for sure, they add. Meanwhile, Murugadoss has started aggressive promotion campaigns for 'Engeyum Eppodhum', which is produced by him by joining hands with Hollywood giant Fox Star. Directed by his former associate Saravanan, the film has Jai, Anjali, Sharvanand and Ananya in lead roles.

Image
'Saroja' girl Nikitha, whose other Tamil venture 'Muran' is set to hit the screens very soon, is the talk of the Kannada film industry, ever since leading actor Darshan was arrested on Friday based on a complaint from his wife. The actor is rumoured to be having an affair with Nikitha, who has starred opposite him in 'Yodha', 'Prince' and 'Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna'. "The affair has resulted in his tussle with his wife," sources said. "Vijayalakshmi had noticed that Darshan was getting close to Nikitha. She started questioning the proximity between them and the harassment increased. And things became worse on Thursday, when the actor assaulted his wife," they added. Darshan has been charged with attempt to murder, harassment, and threat to life and also under the Arms Act. The actor is alleged to have harassed his wife over the last four months and had beaten her up on three earlier occasions. But the victim had reported

Get ready for T films

Image
If there is one socio-political movement that has so much inspired film writers and directors in Tollywood, it is the ongoing agitation for separate statehood to Telangana.  Following some T movies in the past, three more such flicks will see releases in this month. First, R Narayana Murthy's film Poru Telangana tops the chart.  It was praised by the political protagonist of the T-movement, K Chandrasekhar Rao, who said that the film is one hundred times better than N Shankar's Jai Bolo Telangana.  The film has got no elements like love, unlike the Shankar film.  "The film is all about the movement," KCR remarked.  It will release on September 16. Jai Telangana will release on the next day.  The movie stars Rasamai Balakishan, a notable journalist, who plays himself in the movie.  Again, the movie lungs for separate statehood to the region. Masade Lakshminarayana's Inkennallu is about the sacrifices made by innumerable youths for the sake of Telangana o

7th Sense's psychedelic logo

Image
When Suriya, Shruthi Haasan and team came to Hyderabad to unveil the logo of 7th Sense at the Taj Krishna Hotel, it made a grand affair.  Later, when the logo was made public in the event attended by some well-known Tollywood personalities like Sukumar, Meher Ramesh and Boyapati Sreenu, the logo started making news. It is because it has got a psychedelic appeal to it, to say the least.  It is designed imaginatively, evoking a sense of fear.  Sense, written in Telugu, is artistically illustrated to make a face.  Eyebrows and the right face are complete, with second part of the monosyllable word taking care to give shape to nose and the left face. It follows in the pattern of the Tamil logo, though design-wise, the Telugu logo scores better.  Well, it seems the film's innovative logo will only help it catch the attention of some movie-goers

Google honours Queen front man Freddie Mercury with a mix of art and technology

Google continues with its tradition of creating doodles in honour of achievers or momentous occasions. On September 5, the search engine has changed its logo to a doodle celebrating Queen front man’s 65th birthday. The doodle can be seen around the world on September 5 and, out of respect for Labor Day, in the U.S. on September 6. View the doodle in action: The 98-second-long animation shows the lead singer of the British rock band Queen navigating through a crazy world inspired by his own lyrics. According to a few international media reports, doodler Jennifer Hom was the brains behind the elaborate doodle, which was a team effort. The reports further inform that she and other illustrators spent about three months putting the whole thing together, and studied a bunch of old Queen albums and videos to pick out visual cues. The song ‘Don't Stop Me Now’ was chosen because it is considered to be one of Queen’s most popular songs. This is Google’s second longest animated video, fo

Rahman reserves best for Imtiaz and Ranbir in Rockstar?

Image
Promos of  Rockstar  are on and while the film has generated all around positive vibes already, there are also good expectations from Imtiaz Ali to score a hat trick after  Love Aaj Kal  and  Jab We Met  with Ranbir Kapoor too delivering his biggest hit till date after Raajneeti  and  Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani . However, in the middle of this all, the one factor that makes  Rockstar  a film it is, its music, isn't going unnoticed either. If insiders are to believed, A.R. Rahman has returned to his magical ways all over again with an elaborate soundtrack which should find itself high on the popularity quotient. "Oscar winner Rahman has been giving all the attention to  Rockstar  as it a dramatic musical. The genre by itself is such that it is inspiring Rahman to deliver his best. After a lukewarm last year when none of his Bollywood soundtracks, namely  Raavan, Jhootha Hi Sahi, Robot  and  Ada... A Way Of Life  covered a long distance, Rahman's bets are pretty much place

Katrina Kaif features on the cover of Elle

Image
If Hrithik Roshan is the Greek God of good looks, then, his female counterpart will be none other than Bollywood's very own Katrina Kaif, who looks stunning to the core on the latest edition of Elle. Katrina, who has always been in the news for both, professional and personal reasons, has many reasons to smile now. While most of the Bollywood films have been banking on her for the BO magic, even the brand endorsements arena is looking extremely bright for this 27 year old lass. Says Katrina, "I can't say I've reached a stage where I'm amused, but there is a sense of detachment. It doesn't anger me, because I know there isn't any conspiracy against me personally. This is just how it works." And for those who thought that Katrina can't sing in Hindi, she promises, "Before I am done with this profession, I promise you'll hear me sing in Hindi in a film. And you won't laugh!"

"I hope people remember Mausam just like they remember Jab We Met" - Shahid

Image
Most writers, me included, tend to dislike the telephonic interviews. But in the case of Shahid Kapoor I can accommodate. Why? Well, because on all previous occasions I've interviewed the star in person. There was a time when Shahid Kapoor was anonymous. It strikes me, looking at him now, that he just can't wander unnoticed. His Twitter fan club goes insane the moment I tweet 'Attending the  Mausam  music success party tonight'. Questions pour back to back. When I reach the Marriott for the party, the paparazzi can't stop flashing. It goes to such an extent that the video teams standing behind the still photographers have to shout out loud for them to stop clicking. In short, there's a stampede wherever 'Sasha' is present. The most endearing thing about Shahid Kapoor - and there are many - is his refusal to accept how famous he's become. Sometimes, my colleague and I talk about Shahid's meticulous rise in Bollywood that has catapulted from relat
