iMac eSATA retro-fit by OWC boosts external storage flexibility

Image
Apple’s iMac update last week brought the CPU refresh we were all expecting, but fell short of adding the USB 3.0 or faster FireWire connectivity we’d hoped for. Hot on the heels of their RAM upgrades, notorious Mac fiddlers OWC are now offering a retro-fit eSATA port for the new iMac for those wanting to use higher-performance drives. Only available for the 27-inch iMac (not the 21.5-inch version), the eSATA fit basically involves OWC carving out a slot in the lower edge of your new all-in-one and screwing in a port. It’s worth noting that it’s not compatible with Port-Multiplication (PM) eSATA drives, however. Still, if you can live with the compromises the OWC eSATA upgrade is $169 assuming you’re willing to foot the bill to ship your iMac to them (or alternatively drop it off yourself). Shipping is $30+ depending on speed, and OWC will also happily boost your hard-drive capacity or RAM while it’s with them – for a price, of course.

Chevy to increase Volt production by 50% in 2012

Image
Chevrolet announced the MSRP for the Volt extended range electric vehicle recently. The Volt will sell for $41,000 making it very expensive for a compact car. The Volt will be eligible for $7500 in tax credits though. That MSRP is costly, but the lease on the Volt is actually not bad at all. The Volt will be limited production for its first model year, but GM is set to increase production by 50% in 2012. The MSRP could be reduced as more of the vehicles are built and more are sold. The 50% increase in build volume for the Volt will mean 45,000 units per year by 2012. The Volt is an interesting vehicle that can travel 40 miles on battery power alone and has a generator to make electricity for longer trips.

Kindle 3 quietly adds microphone: voice-control coming?

Image
There’s no shortage of headline features for Amazon’s third-generation Kindles – new, lower pricing, the inclusion of WiFi, E Ink’s updated Pearl display – but there are quite a few quietly tweaked additions that could promise an even more interesting future. A Kindle World spotted the inclusion of a microphone – currently unused – together with a few other tidbits, that has already prompted some to suggest a voice-enabled Kindle could be on Amazon’s roadmap. According to the Kindle 3 user guide, “the microphone is not currently enabled but is provided for future use.” The exact nature of those “future use” applications is unclear, but suggestions include voice navigation (useful for those with sight-problems who might be taking advantage of text-to-speech), shared audio annotations and even a phone option for making voice calls.

Hammacher Schlemmer offers 3D camcorder you can buy now

Image
Panasonic has been talking up its coming 3D camcorder that claims to be the first consumer focused 3D camcorder on the market. That Panasonic unit is set to ship in October, but Hammacher Schlemmer has beat Panasonic to the 3D camcorder punch. Hammacher has announced that it has a slick little 3D camcorder that will ship on the 6th. The 3D camcorder looks a lot like the Sanyo Xacti camcorders to me. The little camera measures in at 4.5″ H x 1.5″ W x 3.5″ D and weighs six ounces. The camera will sell for $599.95 and shoots 3D video in 640 x 480 resolution. It has dual lenses with 3MP image sensors and records video to a SDHC card. The camcorder has a 3.25″ LCD and the 3D movies can be watched on the included 7-inch media player without needing 3D glasses. The camcorder can also shoot 2D content.

The new ID series that has landed in Canada includes the Gateway ID49 , a 14-inch HD resolution Ultrabright LED backlit notebook weighing in at 5.07 pounds. JailbreakMe gets FaceTime/MMS tweak; iPhone 4 unlock due shortly

Image
Yesterday’s news of a simple, webpage-based Jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch took most of us by surprise, but the fact that over-demand crashed the JailbreakMe.com servers didn’t. Now they’re back up, but if you managed to run your device through the jailbreaking process early yesterday then you might find a few issues remaining: namely, problems with FaceTime video calling and MMS messaging. According to RedmondPie, the process for restoring FaceTime and MMS functionality is relatively simple: an app called iPhoneDelivery, available through Cydia, will automatically fix it. The good news is that JailbreakMe has since been updated to take into account these tweaks, and so anyone using the webpage to hack their iOS device shouldn’t now encounter any problems. It’s worth remembering that jailbreaking your handset, whilelegitimate under the DMCA, will void your Apple warranty, though you can restore a factory build through iTunes. Meanwhile, the iPhone Dev Team

JailbreakMe site hacks iOS on iPhone, iPad & iPod touch

Image
Jailbreaking your iOS device may be officially permitted under the DMCA, but that presumes there’s a jailbreak out there to run. Happily, anyone with an iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1 or iPad 3.2.1 device now has a super-straightforward way to jailbreak, thanks to comex’s new JailBreakMe site. Doing so is as easy as visiting http://jailbreakme.com/ on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and sliding the appropriate control. Right now the site is up and down as eager users attempt to access it, so you may be better off waiting a while. Of course it’s also worth remembering that, while the DMCA says it’s okay, Apple says jailbreaking your device will nonetheless invalidate your warranty. As with any hack, attempt it at your own risk!

Apple: “We constantly refresh the content on Apple.com”

Image
You might have seen speculation earlier today over Apple’s removal of its antenna testing videos from the company’s attenuation page, including rumors of legal action from rivals or even backtracking on their stance over the iPhone 4. Apple reached out to us this afternoon to dismiss the hearsay, telling us that the update is merely part of their drive to “constantly refresh” their content. “We constantly refresh the content on Apple.com. If you’d like access to the videos, you can find them archived on YouTube.com/Apple.” Natalie Harrison, Apple spokesperson Apple’s antenna page had documented their testing of rival smartphones such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, Nokia N97 mini, Motorola DROID X and Samsung Omnia II, and the ways by which holding them could attenuate their antenna performance. The site went live following Apple’s press event last month, at which they announced the iPhone 4 case program. According to Apple’s spokesperson, there’s no impending legal act

WowWee Roboscooper channels Wall-E

Image
Robotics company WowWee has outed its latest domestic ‘bot offering, and they’ve looked to Wall-E for their inspiration. The WowWee Roboscooper is a six-wheeled remote-controlled robot with a big set of grabbing hands that can pick up objects and deposit them in the cargo bay at the back. Both direct control and autonomous modes are on offer, with the latter using infra-red sensors to spot objects and scoop them up. Alternatively Roboscooper can be set to bat them aside, and as with other WowWee ‘bots there’s a variety of sound effects and voice clips which should keep the kids occupied. Maximum load is apparently around an ounce, and according to Hammacher Schlemmer the Roboscooper can spot objects up to a foot away. Expected to ship at the end of August 2010, the Roboscooper is up for preorder now at $69.99.

Apple yanks “antennagate” testing reports

Image
Has Apple decided the iPhone 4 antenna issue is all cleared up? The company’s antenna information page, which previously showed various test videos of rival smartphones – like the HTC Droid Eris, Motorola DROID X, Nokia N97 mini and BlackBerry Bold 9700 – displaying attenuation issues when held in certain ways, has been pared down to just a brief blurb on the Apple antenna design and test labs. No videos of devices with dropping signal meters, no reports on where to hold smartphones in order to best undermine their wireless performance. Instead there are just a few paragraphs on the testing process and how Apple engineers took the iPhone 4 out into the wild: “Apple engineers tested iPhone 4 in a variety of scenarios, environments, and conditions in order to gauge performance. They spent thousands of hours in cities in the U.S. and throughout the world testing iPhone 4 call quality, dropped-call performance, call origination and termination, and in-service time. They tested iPhone 4

How the iPad is becoming my new favorite home-entertainment device

Image
It’s not often that I sing the praises of a single product. Most times, I use several different devices to do what I want. Whether that means listening to music, computing, or watching television, it doesn’t matter. If I want to do it, chances are, several devices will be needed to get the job done. But as I continue to use my launch-day iPad , it’s becoming clear that all my hopes for an all-in-one device have finally been realized. Apple’s lightweight tablet is quickly becoming my go-to entertainment device for those times when I want to surf the Web, check my e-mail, watch a quick movie, or catch up on a favorite show. It simply provides everything I need in my house in one small package that makes just about everything else unnecessary. I know you might wonder why I would want to give up a 50-inch plasma for a tablet sporting a 9.7-inch display. It’s an understandable question and one that I can’t so easily answer. I certainly see the value of a big screen, and with all the gadgets

Notion Ink Adam gets blessed, will launch with Android 2.2 Froyo not Gingerbread

Image
It’s not often you see a new tablet surrounded by flowers and bearing a pair of bananas and a rose, but Notion Ink are leaving nothing to chance with their Adam slate. Having recently moved offices to Bangalore, they’ve kicked off with an Indian “Pooja” ceremony, basically a request for blessing from the Gods for future success. However, since you can’t necessarily rely on a deity when it comes to hardware specifications, there are also a few new tidbits about Adam, Android 3.0 Gingerbread and potential upgrade paths. Although they describe the window for Android 2.2 devices as “really small“, what with Android 3.0 Gingerbread due before the end of the year, Notion Ink nonetheless intend to launch Adam with the current version of the OS. However, they’re also looking at what few minimum hardware specifications Gingerbread looks like it might have, so as to give Adam the best possible chance of being upgrade-friendly. As it stands, it seems the team is going ahead with the tablet as

HTC EVO 4G Android 2.2 Update Now Available, Adds Plenty

Image
Yesterday, we told you that HTC and Sprint had managed to get everything squared away with the Android 2.2 update, and sure enough, it looks like everything is still going well. Why do we say that? Because you can actually go download the official update right now , courtesy of Sprint’s support site. That’s right — you don’t have to wait for the OTA update that’s set to kick off on August 3rd. Find out after the break if the list of features is good enough for you to jump the gun and start your download early, or if you’ll be able to hold off and wait. Below, you’ll find the official list from Sprint, giving you a quick run down of all the cool new features that the Froyo update is bringing your 4G device. So, without some more rambling, here you go: This update offers: - Ability to share applications - Display events and birthdays from Facebook on Calendar - Use camera LED as flashlight - New user interface for the FM radio - Add unknown users in Facebook as friends in Friend Stream

Motorola Droid Upgrading to Android 2.2 Next Week

Image
We’ll just go ahead and say it: Android 2.2 is just about to be on everything. And it looks like, unlike the previous updates to the Android version, every major carrier and manufacturer out there is taking the update to Android 2.2, or Froyo, very seriously. And that’s perfectly fine with us. This time around, we’ve got official word from Verizon that the Motorola Droid is getting updated to Android 2.2 next week . We had actually heard rumors that the original Droid would be updated to Froyo at the end of July, so this isn’t all that far from the case. And, while the HTC EVO 4G is getting updated to the same version number on August 3rd, we expect the roll out for the original Droid to happen right around the same time. There’s no exact date, but considering the competition, we wouldn’t be surprised. So, we’ve got confirmation from HTC, Samsung, and now Motorola that existing devices in the market right now are getting updated to 2.2. This is great news for all the Android fans out

Best Buy to Offer Cheaper Xbox 360 Special Edition Bundles Starting August 1st

Image
When it comes to the special edition consoles, they aren’t cheap. Then again, they’re special, and they include more in the box than you’d normally get in just the “stock” box. So, that makes sense. So when they go on any kind of sale, you can see why we’d get pretty excited. Thanks to Best Buy, some of the two hottest special edition consoles out there are going on a nice sale, but you’ll have to act fast — it will only be around as long as units are in stock. Beginning August 1st, Best Buy will mark down the Final Fantasy XIII and Splinter Cell: Conviction special edition Xbox 360 consoles to only $299. That’s a $50 savings of their current prices (they launched at $399). As you might expect, they’re trying to rid themselves of stock, and probably try and make some room for that new console that just launched, plus that whole Kinect thing that’s coming out soon. Nothing else is changing with the bundles, though. You’ll still get the black or white Xbox 360 (depending on which game

Snowflake Speakers Shown Off, We Want Them

Image
In today’s market, there are plenty of home audio solutions. There’s even more that let you plug in your iPod Touch or iPhone. Basically, they’re all over the place. And, while we can’t say anything really bad about them, because they work just fine (for the most part), we can say that most of them look relatively similar to the other one. Here’s the solution to that problem: snowflake speakers . As different as a snowflake should be, these speakers definitely stand out. Even if they didn’t light up, which they do, they’d still attract an eye or two while they sat on your table, or desk at your house. Thanks to designer Sylvain Gerber, we get to see what it would look like if a snowflake went all industrial on us, and sprouted a port for your iPhone. The speakers feature the latest in integrated flat membrane audio equipment, so that all of the necessary parts are shoved into the bottom of the speaker. The wiring is illuminated by different colors, as you can see, and extend through th

RIM BlackPad Announced in November, Still Called BlackPad

Image
Well, there you have it. Just a couple of days ago RIM was outed for landing the BlackPad domain name. And while we were secretly hoping that they were just securing a name for name’s sake, if these new rumors from unnamed sources are to be believed, then it looks like the folks up there in Waterloo have chosen their company’s first tablet’s name. And yes, it’s the BlackPad. Speaking to Bloomberg , these unnamed sources also revealed that the 9.7-inch tablet won’t be revealed come this August 3rd, but will actually be unveiled and announced this November. However, the due date for retail availability is still up in the air, and the sources couldn’t divulge any details in that regard. And, just as we’ve heard in the past, the tablet will indeed feature built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. Still, the name means a lot — is BlackPad where RIM should take their first tablet?

Sony PS3 Firmware v3.41 Restricting New Hard Drive Installation

Image
When the PlayStation 3 gets updated , and something not-so-nice happens, it’s usually something that many would consider big enough to scratch their head in confusion. This time around, with the latest release of version 3.41, which was supposed to be a minor update, it looks like folks are being told that installing a new hard drive is a no-go. Version 3.41 was supposed to include some minor changes to the system, as well as include a “You May Like” new interface, where you would get some suggestions about other titles you may like, versus ones you have played or watched. But there’s something else included in the roll-out, too. Reports are coming in that after updating their system, some users are unable to install a new hard drive. A pop-up that states, “no applicable data” will show up, and that’s it. No new hard drive can be installed. Interestingly enough, it’s unclear why this would happen at all. Considering the nature of the update, we’re not sure why there would be any connec

Samsung Cetus Outed by Bluetooth SIG, 4-Inch Windows Phone 7 Handset

Image
Samsung’s first Windows Phone 7 device just broke cover, thanks to the Bluetooth SIG. And, just as we had imagined it would be, it’s a device that can definitely work well to steal some of our attention, even for just a bit. Also not surprising, is the fact that it’s going to be on par with their already released, well-received Galaxy S devices. So if you would, please welcome the Samsung Cetus into existence. We’ve actually heard of the Cetus before, but back then it had a different model number than this time around. Itwas leaked in a UK cellphone roadmap, and sure enough the device is certainly real. Features wise, if you’re looking to buy a Windows Phone 7 device, this may be the one to start leaning towards. It will feature a 4-inch WVGA AMOLED display (which Samsung Hub believes it will be Super AMOLED, and we have no reason to disagree with that belief), WiFi, GPS, and an integrated FM radio. Oh, and there’s a front-facing VGA camera, too. On the back, a 5MP version. It has a

Panasonic updates Toughbook permanent display removable computer

Image
You might be wondering exactly what a permanent display removable Toughbook is. Next time you see a police car look for its computer, this is the sort of computer public safety vehicles use. The hardware is inside the screen of the PC and the keyboard is permanently unattached to the thing. Panasonic has upgraded the computer and it now offers a 12.1-inch sunlight-viewable screen with 2 to 1600nit LED backlighting. The machine also has dual integrated speakers, touchscreen capability, and five programmable function keys. The new LCD is 40% brighter than previous versions making it easier to read in direct sunlight. The keyboard is now backlit as well making typing at night easier. The newly updated machine sells at a starting price of $2,279.

Redbox now renting Blu-ray in many areas

Image
Years ago, there were movie rental places all over my town. Then Blockbuster came in and put everyone out of business but one store. Over the last year, every one of the Blockbuster locations in my town has gone out of business leaving one rental store for a town of around 100,000 people. This is the reason why there are Redbox kiosks popping up all over the place. The last time I was checking a Redbox kiosk I noticed one single Blu-ray film in the library. Redbox has now announced that it is renting Blu-ray films with the price reportedly at $1.50 per night. You can hop over to the Redbox Blu-ray page and put in your zip code to find kiosks in your area packed with Blu-ray titles. Too bad this will do nothing to get the flicks into the Redbox catalog faster.

Xtraordinary Adventures taking reservations for LYNX suborbital space ride

Image
I am betting that a common geek theme among many of us out there is that we wanted to be astronauts when we were little. We may be too old for the space program now, but thanks to companies like Xtraordinary Adventures , you can still take that suborbital space flight, assuming you are loaded. The company will take you on a suborbital flight in their awkward looking LYNX reusable space ship. Each ride will cost you $95,000, which is a bargain compared to the other space flight companies out there. Virgin Galactic will charge $200,000 and Space Adventures wants $102,000 for its flight. The LYNX is piloted by Col. Rick Searfoss and will reach speeds of Mach 3.5+. If you want to book your flight, set to start in 2012, you need to cough up a $20,000 deposit. Your $95,000 fee includes a four-day training session and a two-day brief before the flight.

Viper SmartStart app lands on Android devices

Image
A remote starting system for your car can be a great thing if you live in very cold or very hot climates. Using remote start you can start your car from inside the home or office and have it warm or cool the inside before you ever go to the car. Viper is a big name in the remote starting and security solutions world for cars and the company has announced that it has a new application for Android smartphones for Viper SmartStart systems. The application was previously available for the iPhone and Blackberry devices. Using the Android app the user can start the car, lock or unlock the doors and pop the trunk. The app will also give the user a message on the phone if the security system is triggered so they can run out and get beat up by the thief.

Duracell portable universal netbook charger is under $50

Image
I bet there are many people out there who would like to have two chargers for their netbook. With two chargers, you can leave one at the house and one at the office and not have to fiddle with plugging and unplugging them each time you go to one place or the other. The catch is that many of the power adapters are expensive and they can be hard to find. Duracell has announced a new universal netbook power adapter that is available for $49.99. The power adapter is called the Duracell 40-Watt Universal Netbook Adapter and it will be in Wal-Mart, CompUSA and at many online destinations for purchase. The power adapter has four interchangeable voltage controlling tips that allow the adapter to work with hundreds of netbook models. The adapter will specifically work with popular netbooks from Acer, Asus, Dell, and other major computer makers. The tips automatically switch the voltage on the adapter between 12V and 19V depending on the power needs of your machine. That is much easier than hav

Atomic9 debuts Bluetooth Wristband Speakerphone

Image
Over the last year there have been a lot of new wrist phones debut on the market. These phones put all the parts of typical feature phone into a watch that you can wear on your wrist for making calls and listening to music. The catch is if you have a phone you really like but wanted the wrist style you were mostly out of luck. A company called Atomic9 has debuted a new Bluetooth Wristband Speakerphone for people who want that talk into your wrist style, but with their existing phone. The device is a wristband that you can wear like a bracelet with Bluetooth tech inside. The wristband has a speakerphone in it so you can talk without taking your phone from your purse or pocket. The device has a 30-foot wireless range and supports voice dialing if you phone has that feature. The Atomic9 wristband will also speak caller ID info to you so you know who is calling. Samsung Intensity II lands at Verizon

Image
Verizon Wireless has announced that it has landed a new and budget priced feature phone built around messaging from Samsung . It features a horizontal slide out keyboard with an external number pad on top. The screen of the device is a 2.2-inch unit with a 240 x 320 resolution. AMD takes market lead in discrete GPUs from NVIDIA

Image
AMD and NVIDIA are the only two companies who are in the consumer discrete graphics card market in a big way. There are some other much smaller companies but these are the two leaders. For a long time now, NVIDIA has held the lead in discrete GPUs. AMD has taken lots of flack for buying ATI as the GPU company has had a hard time in the market over the last few years and poor profits cause AMD to have to take some losses on its new GPU division. AMD is now bragging that for the first time in four years, since the purchase of ATI in 2006, AMD has taken the market lead in discrete GPUs from NVIDIA. AMD now holds 51.1% of the discrete GPU market with a growth of 10.4 points from Q2 2009. All of that growth came directly from NVIDIA who lost the same exact amount of points. AMD also has 56.3% of the mobile discrete GPU market. I wonder what NVIDIA will do to get that market share back.

PlayStation Move Starter Pack Features 9 Demos in the UK

Image
While we consider the truth behind a recent rumor of a smaller hard drive bundled together with PlayStation’s Move motion-based controller , we’re now hit with another piece of news. Sony is bringing plenty of bundles to the marketplace once Move launches, but it looks like the same Starter Pack that’s seeing both US and UK-based launches is getting a bit of a switch-up once it launches. The Starter Pack is just what it sounds like. It includes the PlayStation Move controller, the PlayStation Eye camera, and one game called Sports Champions . You get all of that for only $99. However, the UK version of the same bundle, instead, isn’t getting a full retail game at all. According to a recent report with MCV , the UK bundle is actually going to be ship with nine demos, and not the same Champions title. Instead, purchasers will get six snippets of retail titles like Sports Champions , The Shoot , TV Superstars , and Beat Sketchers . Amongst others. The UK Start Pack for Sony’s Move will b

The handset also has GPS capability. The Rambler will sell for $99.99 and hit stores on August 11. On the same day, Boost will also get the Motorola Bali. The Bali is a flip phone with similar capability and a microSD card slot for storage. It will sell for $149.99.

Nintendo kicked in the Wii, posts net loss for fiscal Q1

Image
Nintendo reported its financials for its fiscal Q1 this week and posted a significant loss for the quarter. The quarter spanned April through June for the gaming firm. The strong Yen is pointed to as the major reason the company posted a loss. The strong Yen hurt Nintendo operations in countries other than Japan where Nintendo makes 87% of its revenue. The strong yen cancelled out cost cutting measures and improving sales of Nintendo consoles like the DS portable. Nintendo reported a net loss of $288 million according to the WSJ. Nintendo also reported an asset valuation loss of 70.5 billion yen. A price cut on the DS console in Japan and Europe, which continues to be the top selling console for Nintendo also affected profits.
