BlackBerry App World 3.0 To Launch August 22

Image
Following the release of three new BlackBerry 7 OS smartphones, including the BlackBerry Bold 9930,BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860, and the BlackBerry Torch 9180, RIM is getting ready to unleash a new BlackBerry App World 3.0. According to a source of N4BB, the revamped app marketplace is scheduled to launch on August 22. Additionally, the recently rumored BlackBerry music streaming service could be released around the same time. BlackBerry App World 3.0 is expected to have a completely revamped interface with a home screen that’s been enhanced to make it easier to discover the latest and greatest apps, games, and themes. The home screen will now have rotating banners that display what’s new and exciting and apps downloaded are stored digitally in your own personal storage folder called My World. If you accidentally delete an app or upgrade to a new BlackBerry smartphone, you can wirelessly re-install the app at no additional cost. Apps can be paid for using PayPal or by credit card. And, y

13 year old Scientist Makes Solar Power Breakthrough

Image
The manufactured collection of solar power has been a regular staple in our everyday environmentally friendly means of collecting power docket for quite a few years now. Our method of doing so, of collecting that power with a bit flat array of solar panels to collect the sun’s energy. There’s a little man by the name of Aidan Dwyer who may have just changed the way we look at collecting solar power forever this year as he created an contraption that closely replicates how trees collect solar power to create the most effective means for doing so in history. This little guy is 13 years old. What Dwyer did, whilst on a hike in the Catskills of course, was to take a look at some trees. His mind twisted and turned as the leaves on these trees did, and he wondered if the sequence at which the leaves grew from the branches had anything to do with how well the trees were able to soak up sunlight. He then did some advanced learning for his age, finding out all about the Fibonacci sequence, the

Sony DEV-5 and DEV-3 digital binoculars shoot Full HD video

Image
Sony has outed two sets of digital binoculars, the DEV-5 and DEV-3, that might look more at home on Hoth than they do in your twitcher hide. Promising Full HD video recording with stereo sound, as well as 3D recording for playback on a compatible HDTV, the two sets offer electronic autofocus – with manual override – as well as optical image stabilization. The Sony DEV-5 supports up to 10x optical magnification in 2D movie mode, or a 20x digital mode, while the Sony DEV-3 lacks the digital zoom. Both support up to 5.4x magnification during 3D video recording. Each stores to a Memory Stick or SD/SDHC/SDXC card, with up to 2hrs 30 of 3D recording possible to a 32GB card, or anything from 2hrs 30 to 12hr 50 of 2D footage depending on quality mode. Stills are shot at up to 7.1-megapixels, and the DEV-5 contains GPS to geotag them – and video – too. Connectivity includes mini HDMI, component, composite and S-video outputs, along with USB 2.0 audio in and audio out. Set to hit shelves in Nove

HP TouchPad Lasted 49 Days, Microsoft Kin Lasted 48, IBM Did it Best

Image
Let me see how simple I can make this because there are just a few facts that you should know, probably the most important facts of the day if you don’t count most of the other facts from the HP/webOS situation everyone was freaking out about earlier today. Head to that link for most the details, then come back and remember this bit: HP is weighing spinning off its PC unit. This basically means that HP is looking to do SOMETHING with its PC unit, also known as HP’s PSG, or Personal Systems Group, this sect of HP responsible for PCs, hand-held PCs such as mobile devices, software for the home, and more. SOMETHING means either a complete selling off of the PSG portion of the company or “spinning it off” meaning it would still sort of be part of the company, but it’d be like Beavis and Butthead’s Daria or Happy Days’ Mork and Mindy or Laverne and Shirley – separate but in the same universe. Now one of two main things I want to talk about here is this fun fact: the Microsoft Kin, aka KIN,

Apple takes top spot for mobile PC vendor with 21.1 percent share

Image
According to a new report from DisplaySearch, Apple has taken the top spot in worldwide mobile PC shipments in the second quarter of 2011. The company shipped 13.6 million units of mobile PCs, which includes both notebooks and tablets. This amount puts it in the lead ahead of second place HP by 3.9 million units. Apple’s mobile PC shipments made up 21.1 percent share of the market and its 13.6 million shipment figure is a 136 percent growth from the same quarter last year. HP comes in second place having shipped 9.7 million units with a 15 percent market share, followed by Dell, Acer, and Lenovo. Almost 80 percent of the Apple’s mobile PC sales were of iPads, which saw a 107 percent year-over-year growth. Notebook sales, however, remained stagnant across the board with a 2 percent drop from the previous quarter and a 2 percent increase year-over-year. Tablet shipments in the category as a whole grew 70 percent since the previous quarter and 400 percent year-over-year. However, of the 1

Netgear’s latest NeoTV product crosses the FCC

Image
I have always considered Netgear a networking company and always think of its wireless routers and other networking gear like the DSL home gateway that launched back in May when I hear the company name. Networking is certainly not all Netgear does though. It also makes a line of streaming media set-top boxes as well and the company has a new product that has just crossed the FCC. The latest addition to the Netgear NeoTV line has hit FCC to get the approvals to come to living rooms all around the country. The device appears to be a smaller version of the existing NeoTV gear and it is called the NeoTV 200. The box is thought to be something to compete head on with the new smaller Apple TV and Roku boxes. It’s no surprise that the device is focused on media streaming. The user manual at the FCC even notes that Netflix and Pandora are supported. It would be no stretch to expect that the device would offer streaming services like Hulu Plus and others as well. That isn’t confirmed though. Th

LG rejected Android pole position insider reveals

Image
LG, not HTC, was to be Google’s original partner on the first commercial Android smartphone, according to the latest industry rumors, with Android chief Andy Rubin being forced to turn to the then-little-known Taiwanese firm after LG backed out of the deal. Although negotiations had begun in early 2007 for hardware partners, a source tells the WSJ, first-choice LG opted out midway through the year leaving HTC to pick up the reins. It’s a decision which hindsight suggests did LG no favors, given HTC subsequently rode Android to its current prominence. Although no reason for LG’s decision not to continue with Google on the Android project is given, the company’s existing touchscreen cellphone plans are likely to have played a significant part. LG launched the original Prada phone at the same time as Apple did the first-gen iPhone, and for a while was seen as one of the leading firms in the relatively underdeveloped all-touch segment. Unwired View suggests that, while Google likely asked

XFX announces Deus Ex Human Revolution Radeon video card bundles

Image
Years ago I really, really liked the first Deus Ex video game, it was one of the first shooter style games that I really go into. I have been waiting with anticipation for the next installment in the franchise to land. The new game is called Deus Ex Human Revolution and should be cool. From what I have seen of the graphics in the game, if your computer is older you might miss some of the cool effects. I think this will be one of those games that gets people to upgrade their computers. If you need a new video card to get ready for the game XFX has announced that it will be bundling a full version of the game with certain video cards. You can buy the Radeon HD6850, HD6870, or the HD6890 video cards from participating retailers and get the Dues Ex title free with purchase. The retailers participating include TigerDirect, Newegg, NCIX, Frys.com, and Amazon.com. If you aren’t familiar with the video game you can check out the trailer below. This is a good chance to get a very cool video car

IBM, DARPA, and university researchers create basic design for computer chip that works like the brain

Image
IBM is one of the biggest companies in high performance computing and supercomputers and has been a big force in the computer world for over 65 years. IBM announced today that with help from DARPA and four major universities the basic design of an experimental computer chip that emulates the human brain has been completed. IBM calls the chip a cognitive computing chip. The goal is to one day simulate the activity of the brain to sense, perceive, interact, and recognize, as the human brain is able to do. These are all things that people can do much better than computers today. The principal investigator for the project is Dharmendra Modha, a researcher at IBM’s Almaden Research Center. The project is called Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics, or SyNAPSE. The project members hope that this will eventually lead to computer chips that function like the brain. Applications for a chip that works like the brain could have a huge impact on all sorts of areas from med

Cadillac Converj concept car to hit dealers as Cadillac ELR

Image
One of the things I really like about car show season at the major shows around the world is that we get to see some cool concept cars. One of the cool green concepts that made its way around many major car shows from GM was called the Cadillac Converj concept. The concept was a luxury coupe that used extended range electric tech for motivation. GM has announced that the car will be going into production as the Cadillac ELR. At this point Caddy isn’t offering up any details on the performance of the ELR, pricing, or when the car will be coming to dealers. The ELR will use an electric drive system that has a T-shaped lithium ion battery, and electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. Electricity is the primary drive source and when the battery is low, the extended range mode kicks in with the motor-generator charging the battery to allow driving. The car sounds a lot like the Cadillac version of the Chevrolet Volt. The ELR is a 2+2 vehicle and the design of the Converj c

Google Updates iOS Search App With Instant Pages

Image
Google updated its Search app for iOS today with the addition of several new features that will make searching faster and more convenient. Most noticeable is the addition of a filter button in the search bar that makes it easy to quickly select which categories to search under. Also added is support for Google’s Instant Pages feature, which was first introduced for the Chrome desktop browser back in June. The Google Search app is much more powerful than its Safari browser counterpart. Besides typing in your search query, you can input your search using speech as well as using photos from your phone’s camera. The latter utilizes the experimental Google Goggles feature and finds search results relevant to photos of books, DVDs, landmarks, logos, contact info, artwork, businesses, products, QR barcodes, and more. The addition of the filter button lets you narrow down your search results by selecting categories from a drop-down menu. These categories include Everything, Images, Places, New

Windows 8 Will Have An App Store And Possibly Kinect Integration

Image
Microsoft may have inadvertently confirmed some details on Windows 8 today when Windows chief Steven Sinofsky posted a list of teams working on the next-gen operating system. The post, titled “Introducing the team,” was published on Microsoft’s recently inaugurated Building Windows 8 blog and revealed that the next-gen platform will indeed have an app store as well as possible Kinect integrations. In the post, Sinofsky explained how the Windows project is fairly broad and is comprised of a set of smaller projects with various teams that work together and independently. The work is organized into “feature teams” that take charge of specific features of the platform. For Windows 8, the company has about 35 feature teams with 25 to 40 developers in each working together with test and program management. But what’s interesting is that in the full list of teams, one is called “App Store,” making this the first time that Microsoft has confirmed an app store for Windows 8. Microsoft did previ

Canon 24-105mm Lens Crafted of Ceramic Brings Liquid Satisfaction in a Snap

If there’s one single photo related to photography itself that’s so meta, so amazingly ingenious it’s amazing it hasn’t been done a thousand times over, it’s the big expensive lens turned into a coffee cup. An artist by the name of DERELIQ has decided to take this awesome idea another step back, smaller and further away in a shotglass made in the form of a Canon lens, complete with all the knobs, settings, and red ring rim you’ve come to expect. This little cutie is a pretty darn good replica of the original version which, believe it or not, is a whole lot bigger. As the artist shows, you don’t necessarily have to plop a drop of mixed alchol in there, you can use this little guy for everything from jellybeans to SD cards – or a single roll of film would work too. Can you imagine all the things you’d think of to drop in? Then again, you could toss back a few shots of whiskey and go on a photo hunt, I suppose that wouldn’t be the worst idea should you remain safe on the jaunt. The best p

AMD Introduces New Triple-Core A6-3500 APU

Image
AMD today announced the availability of a new APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) called the A6-3500 that extends the company’s lineup of A-Series processors, delivering brilliant HD graphics and high-speed performance. Unlike the A8-3800 and A6-3600 processors in the series, this new A6-3500 will not be quad-core. Instead, it is the first triple-core Llano APU and has a sub-$100 price tag that make it ideal for starter or budget gaming systems. The A6-3500 APU combines three x86 CPU cores with 320 Radeon GPU cores, enabling DirectX11-capable discrete-level graphics and dedicated HD video processing on a single chip. It also comes with AMD’s Turbo Core and Steady Video Image stabilization technology as well as DDR3 1333 support, HDCP compatibility, and AMD VISION Engine software. The triple-core APU runs at 2.1GHz but can be clocked up to 2.4GHz depending on workload, while the GPU cores are clocked at 443MHz and a TDP of 65W. Like its predecessors, the APU can be paired with select AMD

Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard for Mac caters to OS X

Image
Logitech has outed a new version of its Wireless Solar Keyboard, this time targeting Mac users with some OS X specific keys. The new K750 ‘board keeps the slimline profile, concave key caps and 2.4GHz wireless technology – using Logitech’s Unified dongle – but now has the control, option and command keys familiar from Apple’s official layout. Charging from sunlight or ambient lighting while indoors, a full battery is good for up to three months of use in pitch darkness. It’d help if you had some lighting around, however, since there’s no key backlighting. The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard for Mac is available to pre-order now, priced at $59.99. Five colors will be offered: black, silver, red, blue and green.

HP wants webOS in your car and microwave

Image
HP’s webOS tablet, the TouchPad, may not have set the market alight, but the company is hoping a broader playing-field for the platform might make a big difference. webOS chief Stephen DeWitt told the WSJ that HP is exploring the possibility of putting the software into cars and onto home appliances, claiming that there was an “enormous amount” of manufacturer interest for the concept. HP has previously said that it intends to put webOS onto every one of its PCs come 2012 in an attempt to saturate the market with the software. However, this new automotive and appliance direction could – if HP’s play pans out, and it can translate interest to adoption – considerably extend webOS’ reach. That ought to do what the Pre range of smartphones and TouchPad tablet are yet to convincingly do: persuade developers to focus on the webOS platform. Actually breaking into those two new segments may be tougher than HP expects, however. DeWitt would not name any specific firms in talks over using webOS,

BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 priced sky-high in US

Image
Pricing for the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 in the US has been revealed, and you could almost think that the US carriers wanted to kill off RIM given the sky-high numbers involved. Verizon’s “World Phone” Bold 9930 isavailable now, priced at $249.99 with a new, two year agreement and data package, while T-Mobile USA will offer the Bold 9900 at the end of this month but is asking even more. In fact, when the Bold 9900 hits T-Mobile on August 31, it will be priced at $299.99 after rebates, again assuming a two-year agreement for voice and data. It’s not entirely clear why either carrier is positioning the handset quite so high up the smartphone food chain; in the UK, for instance, the Bold 9900 is available from free on a monthly plan priced at the equivalent of $54 or higher (combined voice and data). At that level, unless you’re determined to use BlackBerry 7 and are in love with RIM’s admittedly excellent physical keyboards, we can’t see many opting for the Bold instead of an iPhone 4

Space radar captures sound of Perseid meteor shower

Image
Whatever you want to call the Perseid meteors be it shooting stars or simply meteors as they streak through the atmosphere this time each year, they are beautiful to watch. Most people that live in an area where it is reasonably dark can just step outside and see a bunch of the shooting stars on any given night. I know I am not the only one that has wondered what the shooting stars sound like. I have seen meteors on movies that streak overhead and crash into the ground and I honestly always assumed that the sound they make is much like a rocket taking off or a jet flying overhead. Apparently, I was wrong. The USAF Space Surveillance Radar in Texas has recorded the echoes of the shooting stars as they plummet through the atmosphere and burn up. The sound they actual make is more like a whistle or a warbling musical note. It reminds me more than a little of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode where the wind whistles through his holes attracting jellyfish. Check out the video below that sho

Samsung SSD 830 Series SATA 3 drives revealed

Image
Samsung has outed its latest solid-state drive range, the Samsung SSD 830 series, offering up to 512GB of high-speed storage with a SATA 3.0 interface. Promising double the bandwidth of the SSD 470 series that so impressed us late last year, the new model keeps the sleek brushed-metal chassis and proprietary Samsung firmware. Samsung isn’t talking about specific data rates yet – those figures won’t be released until October, the company says, when the 830 series gets its “official launch” – but the promise is a significantly faster experience than what we’ve seen from its SSDs before. Four versions will go on sale initially, sized from 64GB through 128GB and 256GB, and topping out at 512GB. They’ll be bundled with a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch drive bay adapter and a USB to SATA adapter cable in the upgrade packages. No word on pricing at this stage, though given the RRP of the last-gen 256GB 470 series drive was $550 at launch, we’re not expecting these new 830 series drives to be much diffe

Cregle Penbook tablet hits the FCC

Image
There are some folks that won’t consider a tablet or notebook if the thing isn’t running Windows 7. That is understandable on some levels since you need Windows if you use certain software a lot at home or in the office. A new Windows 7 tablet has crossed the FCC called the Cregle Penbook. The tablet has a 10-inch screen made by Wacom. It has a bunch of other features that the FCC outted as well like WiFi, Bluetooth, a SD card slot, 16GB SSD for storage, a USB port, and a speaker and mic built-in. Like most Windows 7 tablets, the machine is hardly a lightweight tipping the scales at 2.3 pounds. It uses an Intel Atom processor at 1.6GHz according to the manual. The tablet is complete to the point that samples are floating around according to reports. At this point, the exact launch date and the price for the tablet are unknown. If samples are already out the tablet would be close to launching I imagine. A demo video has also surfaced that you can check out below.

Google+ has no users says Facebook exec

Image
Facebook execs have accused Google of having “emulated aspects of our system” with its new Google+ games, though suggested that the social networking upstart “[doesn't] have any users.” According to Facebook director of game partnerships Sean Ryan, Google is directly following Facebook’s path including taking a percentage cut of game developer’s proceeds, Fortune reports, though the far smaller share involved – Google+ demands 5-percent, versus Facebook’s 30-percent – is a sign that the new network falls short when it comes to actual members. “Google is at 5% because they don’t have any users” Ryan argued. “Google has emulated aspects of our system, which is what they have the right to do” the exec said, “we just need to be better.” According to Ryan, the comparison is similar to when MacDonald’s attempted to muscle in on Starbucks’ “premium” coffee business, using temptingly low pricing to build market share. Yesterday, reports broke suggesting that Facebook was attempting to bury

Facebook Blocking Google+ Invite Posts?

Image
Reports surfaced today that Facebook may be blocking posts that encourage users to try out rival social network, Google+. A video was posted this morning by a Google employee pointing out something peculiar he noticed about how his friends’ news feeds would show his regular status updates but would exclude one’s with a link to Google+. The video was subsequently linked to by Google senior VP Vic Gundotra, who asked on Google+ whether others were experiencing this same problem. He notes that the company was “getting reports” from other users of this behavior. This, of course, sparked speculation that Facebook may be intentionally blocking Google+ related posts. However, Facebook disagrees and has responded saying that the company could not duplicate the same problem as depicted in the video. The company also noted that they have display-filtering technology that help prevent spam and thus could exclude certain links from re-appearing on a user’s news feed if it had previously been poste

Sony Unveils New Budget PSP Ahead Of PS Vita

Image
Sony unveiled a new budget-friendly model of the PSP today during their Gamescom press conference. The announcement came as quite a surprise since the company’s PSP successor, the PS Vita, was announced with much fanfare at E3 2011. This new PSP model will, however, only be available to the European market. This value-priced PSP model dubbed the E-1000 will lack Wi-Fi support, meaning it will not be able to download games. Instead, it will be accompanied by a variety of PSP Essentials titles that will retail for £9.99, including Invizimals: The Lost Tribe, EyePet Adventures, and FIFA 12. The PSP E-1000 will retail for £99, which is £30 less than the current PSP model. And although there’s no Wi-Fi, users can still access a full catalogue of PSP games on UMD or from the PlayStation Store via Media Go.

Game industry execs think PS vita launch will be “a car wreck”

Image
The PS Vita isn’t even here yet and already some game developers are calling for a failed product and a launch that one is describing as “a car wreck.” How you can call a launch a failure before the product even ships is beyond me. The PS Vita is expected to hit Japan later this year and land in the US early next year. Lyle Hall and Matthew Seymour from Heavy Iron Studios are already predicting failure of the PS Vita. Seymour is predicting the launch will be “a car wreck” because he believes that consumers are no longer interested in a device that does one thing. He thinks that consumers have spoken with their wallets and that the iPhone and Android devices that are able to play games and do many other things are what the consumer wants today. He may be right with the Nintendo 3DS having failed to catch consumer attention resulting in a giant price cut. Hall thinks consumers won’t pay $299 for a PS Vita when they would not pay $249 for a 3DS. He has a good point there; Sony may need to

ZyXEL wireless WHD6215 HDMI adapter launches for $199

Image
I can tell you from experience that there are times when using a HDMI cable for your home theater just won’t work. I have a projector in my game room and it’s about 14-feet from my cable box. The thought of having to run a HDMI cable up the wall and across my attic floor was none too appealing to me. I ended up going for a wireless HDMI adapter from Rocketfish and it works very well. If you have a setup where your cable or satellite box is a long way from your TV or projector wireless HDMI is certainly a viable option. ZyXEL has a new wireless HDMI system called the Aerobeam WHD6215 that includes the wireless sender and receiver that has now landed for general availability. Interestingly it looks virtually identical to the Rocketfish wireless HDMI system I use. The ZyXEL WHD6215 is the same price as the Rocketfish system at $199 normally. The WHD6215 system is on sale at Buy.com though with a price of $180 from August 15-30. The ZyXEL system will work with any HDMI device and shoots th

iPhone 5 on Sept 12 tips carrier insider, but iPad 3 2011 plans scrapped

Image
More behind the scenes Apple shuffling today, with good news and bad about two of the most anticipated iOS devices on the horizon. The iPhone 5 could well be on track for a September 12 launch, Engadget‘s tipster informs them, after word that carrier Telefonica will begin scaling back its current iPhone stock in time for that date so as to “prepare us for the launch of a new smart phone.” However, Apple’s supposed plans for an iPad 3 release in the second half of 2011 have reportedly been axed over high-res screen shortages. Apple had been looking at so-called Retina Display panels for the third-gen iPad, DigiTimes‘ sources say, running at 2,048 x 1,536 resolution; however, recent supply channel checks supposedly now find that the company has cancelled related orders. The tipped reason for the change in strategy is a shortfall in suitable display yields: neither Samsung nor LG are said to be able to produce sufficient supplies for Apple’s expected demand, while alternative manufacturer

When Marketing Goes Wrong: TabCo and Fusion Garage’s Grid

Image
This Monday we were treated to the final reveal of what the mysterious “TabCo” group was and what sort of tablet they’d be making that would, as they said several times, “reinvent the wheel.” This presentation began with an absurd video filled with a collection of the worst possible set of actors that whoever is in charge of casing for TabCo was able to find – a like spoken in the video encapsulates the absurdity: “Okay, Bye, Hungry?” What was supposed to act as a revelation and a simple showing of a brand new way of going about working in the mobile market quickly descended into a renewed set of confusing points of order and a tablet which, in fact, wasn’t going to be made or branded with the TabCo name at all – it was all a front! After the video we were greeted by a man by the supposed name of Ian Quincy, calling himself the TabCo CEO and letting people know that apparently he was better known as “IQ.” He spoke quickly of the many parody and viral ads that had been released over the

Microsoft: Google-Motorola Deal Makes Windows Phone Only Equal Opportunity Platform

Image
In the wake of today’s shocker that Google is acquiring Motorola Mobility, Microsoft has issued a statement that’s almost just as bewildering. Windows Phone President Andy Lees expressed that after the Google-Motorola deal, the Windows Phone platform will be the only one that provides equal opportunity to all partners. It’s truly an odd statement when you think about the company’s partnership with Nokia. Nokia officially announced jumping ship from its own sinking Symbian and an uncertain MeeGo platform to Microsoft’s Windows Phone back in February. Although specific details on the deal have not been disclosed, it’s been confirmed to involve Nokia getting special privileges over other Windows Phone manufacturers as well as receiving a payment upfront in the billions of dollars. Nokia gets extra marketing muscle and the right to customize its Windows Phone interface more than other platform partners. Additionally, it’s rumored that an interim update for the Windows Phone 7 platform afte

Google Forced To Buy Motorola To Block Microsoft?

Image
News of Google buying Motorola for $12.5 billion took the tech community by surprise this morning, but now it’s believed that Google may have had no other choice. If it didn’t scoop up Motorola, rival Microsoft may have done so instead, giving the Windows Phone giant ample patent ammunition from Motorola’s IP treasure trove to wreak more havoc on the Android platform. According to GigaOM, insider sources say that Motorola has been in acquisition talks with several parties, including Microsoft. The software giant’s attack on the Android platform is no secret now, especially with the recent spat in which Google openly accused Microsoft of doing just that. Hence, Motorola’s massive patent portfolio is of particular interest to Microsoft. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha even recently hinted that its IP could be used against other Android device makers. The threat of Microsoft scooping up Motorola is apparent with Google willing to pay 60 percent more per share than Motorola’s stock value and its a

Amazon Student App Lets You Trade Textbooks And More From Your iPhone

Image
Amazon launched a new iOS app today that will simplify the back-to-school rush. The app is called Amazon Student and makes it convenient for students to trade-in used textbooks, electronics, video games, DVDs, and more for Amazon.com gift cards. It also makes it easier for students to scan textbooks in a store to see quickly if better deals are available elsewhere. With the new app, students can directly scan the barcodes of textbooks from their campus bookstore to compare prices. Trading in used textbooks from the previous semester is also as simple as scanning the barcode and submitting it to Amazon straight from the mobile app. Textbooks can be traded in for as much as 70 percent back. Pre-paid shipping labels can be sent to a student’s address on file and payments for trade-ins are distributed in the form of gift cards. Additionally, it’s easy to sign up through the app for the Amazon Student program, which offers college students free two-day shipping as well as exclusive deals on

HTC Bootloader Unlock Live, Sensation First in Line

Image
As promised weeks ago, HTC has begun the bootloader unlocking process today, all of it starting with the international edition of the HTC Sensation, and all of it working from the also new HTCDev.com. This process will start this morning for all HTC customers and that HTCDev will continue to be the source for all HTC-prone developers to access such awesome tools as the HTC S3D SDK and the HTC Pen SDK. Announced all the way back in June, HTCDev will continue to be the location where all HTC devices bootloaders are unlocked into the future. If you head over to HTCDev now, you’ll find that details on unlocking your Euro version of the HTC Sensation is available with an “Unlock Bootloader” option in the lower right-hand side of your display. If you take a look over on Android Community you’ll find another less-than-official way to unlock your bootloader should you not be able to wait for your HTC device to be up on the list. When you reach your destination on the HTCDev page, you’ll find t

iOS Assistant based on Siri tech, able to access contacts, calendars, and email

Image
Apple’s newest mobile operating system by the name of iOS 5 just keeps getting better and better it seems, today being sort of confirmed to be working with Siri technology, Siri being a company Apple purchased last year. Also in play is the fact that Nuance, a company that powers the voice-recognition aspect of Siri’s current iPhone app, has recently released a separate app very similar to the current Siri app – this launching the idea that Apple’s iOS 5 “Assistant” could be working completely on Nuance technology. We already know the two companies to be working together on one project: OS X Lion uses Nuance speech technology. What this partnership will likely come to be is a speech-to-text situation similar to what we see in Lion, this in addition to voice recognition back end for Assistant. Meanwhile Siri’s AI and tech will likely be the name of the game. Further clues include the fact that leaked views of the Assistant built-in application look very similar to what we’re seeing in t
