Preparations under way for Golden Globes

Image
From screenings and fittings to gift suites and pre-parties, preparations were under way citywide this weekend for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards. Here's a sampling: GLOBES GLEE: The cast of TV's "Glee" said they were developing new rituals to prepare for Sunday's Golden Globes, where the Fox show is up for best comedy series and stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch are nominated for their performances. "I've never done an award show so I guess I'll have to start a ritual," said Lynch, who plays mean-spirited cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the show. "I bet I will probably get up and have coffee like I always do." Other "Glee" stars dreamed of more luxurious preparations. "I will cleanse myself in the waters of Nepal," said Mark Salling, who plays Puck. "I should have a ritual, like I should bathe in milk or something extravagant," said Jayma Mays, who plays the show's prim and pr

Golden Globes host Gervais ready to play favorites

Image
Golden Globe Awards host Ricky Gervais has firm ideas about who should win Sunday and who should have been nominated in the first place — for instance, him. Gervais said he plans to follow in the footsteps of Bob Hope, who, as Academy Awards host, jokingly whined about being overlooked for his movies. Gervais failed to get a nod for "The Invention of Lying," which he starred in, co-wrote and co-directed. "There will be questions asked," Gervais warned, adding he might drag the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the ceremony's organizer, onstage for questioning. "Look forward to that," he said, with more than a touch of glee. He also places tongue-in-cheek blame on Daniel Day-Lewis, who's up for musical or comedy acting honors for "Nine." The oft-acclaimed Day-Lewis has received Oscars for the dramas "There Will be Blood" and "My Left Foot." "How dare he move in on comedy? It's just not fair,

The Trend That Makes The Broadcast TV Networks Weep

Image
Robert already has a post on a long NY Times article chronicling many things including the recent troubles at NBC. My favorite part of that article is the very fine chart above. It’s meant to demonstrate how far NBC has fallen lately, but if you step back from the current media frenzy of “Woe is NBC”, what the top chart says to me is “Woe is Broadcast Television”. (I have my own similar chart that I do annually with a bit more detail, but nobody does business graphics that look better than the NY Times) And while the bottom chart says “NBC has really slid in the last 8 years”, it also shows that NBC’s been in worse relative shape before (as have the other broadcasters) and recovered from it, so their relative position among broadcast networks is almost certainly temporary. (I have my own chart showing the cyclical nature of the business in the Eras of Network Television, and while it’s not nearly as fine as what comes from the NY Times, it was put into a recent book on the media indust

Conan’s Characters Left Behind At NBC

Image
The Masturbating Bear is dead. As a deal nears for Conan O’Brien’s exit from NBC, one thing is certain: The characters and recurring comedy bits O’Brien originated during his 16-plus years on “Late Night” and “The Tonight Show” will not follow the host when he leaves NBC. The Peacock owns the intellectual property behind such popular O’Brien characters as Pimpbot 5000 and Conando, as well as recurring segments such as In the Year 3000 and Desk Driving. Sources involved in the settlement negotiations say NBC is keeping the copyrighted and trademarked elements of O’Brien’s shows as part of the deal. That means the bits and characters will likely never be seen after O’Brien’s “Tonight” ends its run Jan. 22.

Jeff Zucker Takes Blame for Leno At 10pm; Blames Jeff Gaspin for Conan at 12:05am

Image
In a long piece that will appear in Sunday’s New York Times that is part run-down on the recent issues regarding late night, and part “history of NBC,” NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker says that it was new NBC entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin who suggested a 30 minute Jay Leno show at 11:35 and moving Conan to 12:05. “That’s what he wanted to do, and I said, O.K., give it a shot,” Zucker said, with the Times noting the shot exploded in their faces. But Zucker took the blame for Leno at 10pm. “At the end of the day Jay at 10 o’clock didn’t work, and I take responsibility for that,” Zucker told the Times. “I think part of why there’s been such a visceral reaction to this is we’ve talked about change and taking risks, and that’s something I’ve always been associated with,” Zucker said. “And not being afraid to take chances.” Mr. Zucker also suggests that for all the recent focus on NBC woes, it will ultimately pass. “We live in a society today that loves a soap opera,” Zucker said. “Three

Conan Crushes Letterman Again on Friday with adults 18-49; Wins Households too

Image
Yes, we know, Dave tapes his Friday Late Show earlier in the week, but Conan’s Tonight Show winning streak and ratings surge continued on Friday night. Conan drew another 1.9 rating with adults 18-49 in Nielsen’s top 24 local People Meter markets (the same rating he drew on Thursday) lapping Letterman’s .8 with viewers 18-49. And for the first time in weeks Conan also won with households, with a 3.2 rating versus a 3.0 for Letterman.

Bhansali Gets It Rai …ght !

Image
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has a new creative honcho in his 'Guzaarish' team. It's an uncredited honour, though. The passionate filmmaker has found a friend, philosopher and guide in his old pal Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Known to be insanely possessive about his projects, SLB is famed for taking all the creative decisions himself. Not any longer. An insider on his set whispers, "Sanjay consults Aishwarya on everything connected with 'Guzaarish'. Her words really matter to him and he asks her to be present on the sets even when she is not required for a scene." Apart from her stunning physicality and talent, what has earned respect for Ash in the eyes of Bhansali is her unstinting professionalism. After co star's Hrithik's recent b'day bash, when everyone partied till the wee hours of the morning, it was only Ash who reported on time for next day's shooting.Point noted. Deepshikha Dazzles 'Limca Records' With Ten !

Priyanka Chopra and her 12 roles in 'What's Your Raashee' are likely to earn her recognition in the 'Guinness Book Of World Records'. And after Chopra's dozen, another artiste with 10 credits to a film is likely to sashay her way into the 'Limca Book Of Records.' Her claim to fame? Deepshikha Nagpal will make it as, 'the only woman to have the rare distinction of being a woman involved in all the departments of film making.'Earlier, her calling card mainly was her unerring resemblance to the late Parveen Babi. Ms. Nagpal, though, has proven that she has far more talent to offer. 'Yeh Dooriyan' her cine effort boasts of Deepshikha tackling a clutch of ten skills as its producer, director, actor, casting director, story writer, screenplay writer, dialogue writer and post production assistant! Phew!! If you've survived that, here's more! The intrepid gal has additionally helped out in two departments, for which she hasn't taken c

Amitabh Bachchan visits Jyoti Basu

Kolkata, Jan 16 (IANS) Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan Saturday visited a city private hospital where Marxist leader Jyoti Basu is described by doctors attending on him as in a very critical condition. Bachchan, who was here in the city to promote his film 'Rann', spent half-an-hour at the hospital and spoke to doctors about Basu's condition. 'He waited with all of us on the ninth floor of the hospital. He has left a 'get well soon' note for Basu,' CPI-M leader Md. Salim told reporters on emerging from the hospital after Bachchan left. Draped in a black suit and red tie, Bachchan, however, did not speak to the media. He left the hospital premises after a namaskar (with folded hands) to hundreds of his fans who gathered outside. 'Though he was asked to go to the seventh floor (where Basu is staying), he maintained that he will inquire about Basu's condition from the doctors and not go to the seventh floor as dialysis was going on.' 10 Ways to Get Banned by the Search Engines

When you build your website, you, of course, want to get high rankings in the search engines. There are lots of ways to do this and lots of ways to NOT do this. Below are 10 things to avoid if you want to be in good standing with the search engines. 1. Duplicate Content/Sites – Do not set up multiple sites or site pages using basically the same content with a few different keywords spread around. This does not fool the search engines. 2. Cloaking – Cloaking is when a website or webpage is set up to show different content for a search engine spider than the human visitors. The cloaked page (for the spiders) is stuffed with keywords in an attempt to get higher rankings. What it can get you is banned! 3. Linking to Bad Neighborhoods – Be careful who you link to because you can be found guilty by association. Do not link to non-family friendly websites and unethical websites. 4. Title Stacking – This is simply trying to give each page more than one title tag so you can use more keywords to

Back injury rules out MS Dhoni

Image
MS Dhoni has been ruled out of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong because of a back strain. Virender Sehwag, his deputy, will lead India in the match scheduled to start on Sunday, and Dinesh Karthik will replace him as the keeper, the Indian team manager Arshad Ayub confirmed. Dhoni suffered a back spasm during morning practice, retired to the dressing room and sent Virender Sehwag for the traditional captain's pre-match conference. However Sehwag, in his inimitable style, just offered: "He is fine, just taking a break and he is enjoying in the dressing room." "The spasm continued and refused to go away," Ayub told Cricinfo. "Dhoni didn't want to take any chances and decided at the team-meeting in the evening that he wouldn't play the Test. Karthik will replace him." Karthik played two games as an opener in the recently concluded tri-series. Dhoni had earlier suffered a back spasm during India's tour of New Zealand early last y
