Shogun Bros. updates Chameleon X-1 game mouse

Image
Shogun Bros. announced an update to its Chameleon X-1 gaming mouse that doubles as a full 16-button game controller as well as a wireless presenter. This new version adds a rubberized coating for improved grip and durability, a revised button layout for improved remote control operation, and a longer battery life. Besides these improvements, the Chameleon X-1 looks relatively the same as when we first saw it back in December of last year. It still has the 16 buttons, two analog sticks, and force feedback support. It also maintains a five-stage adjustable 1600dpi optical sensor The Chameleon X-1 includes a nano transceiver that can be stored in a compartment inside the mouse and it requires one AAA battery to power. It will ship starting October 1, but can be pre-ordered now on Amazon for $59.99. It comes in three colors of red, gray, and purple.

Meizu MX may be first quad-core Android phone

Image
Meizu may soon be launching the very first Android smartphone to feature a quad-core processor. This powerful handset is rumored for a late September launch and will arrive in two versions, one with 16GB internal storage and a dual-core processor and another with 32GB storage an the quad-core processor. The Meizu MX is expected to sport a 4.3-inch qHD 540 x 960 display and a Cortex-A9 quad-core processor. However, other than these specs, the rendering, and the diagram, very little has surfaced regarding the device. Specs such as its front- and rear-facing camera resolutions, RAM, and Android version still remain a mystery. And unfortunately, this beast of a handset will most likely be limited to the Chinese market. The 32GB quad-core version is priced at ¥4,999 ($780) and the 16GB dual-core version is priced at ¥3,999 ($625).

Google Wallet confirmed to launch on Nexus S 4G

Image
Reports earlier this morning tipped that Google’s NFC-based mobile payment service called “Wallet” would be launching first on the nation’s third largest carrier sometime today. And indeed, Google has confirmed now that the Wallet app will begin rolling out to Nexus S 4G handsets via an over-the-air update. Google Wallet lets you pay for any of your purchases at participating locations by simply tapping your Nexus S 4G on a NFC-equipped terminal at the register. Payments work with your Citi MasterCard credit card or Google’s PrePaid card, which can be funded by any credit card, including those from Visa, American Express, and Discover. The Google Wallet service was first announced back in May with initial launch partners being Citi, MasterCard, First Data, and the Now Network carrier. Visa, Discover, and American Express will also be joining the platform soon with support for their NFC specs to be added in future versions of Google Wallet.

Samsung Illusion for Verizon photo leaks

Image
Samsung accidentally leaked a photo for one of its upcoming Android smartphones for Verizon. The device is called the Samsung Illusion and it’s very much a reality now that the company inadvertently posted a public preview of the device via Flickr, but then quickly set the image to private. The Samsung Illusion has been rumored before as the Samsung Viper with the SCH-I110 model number. It’s more of a mid-range 3G handset, featuring either an 800MHz or 1GHz processor with a three- or five-megapixel camera, and a 320 x 480 pixel resolution screen. The device will run the latest TouchWiz on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Most of the details on the handset have not been confirmed except that it will be a eco-friendly device with a Sustainable Product Certification. It is expected to arrive on Verizon around September 29, priced at $100 or less with a new two-year contract.

Ice Cream Sandwich launcher app Hands-on

Image
When we heard today that the folks at Syndicate Apps (a third-party developer group known for their fun pre-release Android antics) were creating an Ice Cream Sandwich launcher, we just had to get our hands on it as soon as possible. So when they dropped their first version of what we know at this moment may well be Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 2.4 for handsets, as the developer team making this app call it, we went to downloading and now have a hands-on video for you to take a look at. What you’re going to see is a few different ways to launch apps, a slightly different look to the interface, and the way you can download this free launcher for yourself. First of all, don’t be fooled, this isn’t based on any leaked version of the Ice Cream Sandwich software, it’s made from all that we know about Ice Cream Sandwich including the original announcement post which has what Google has said thus far about the system. What this version of the launcher, as created by a dev team, represents i

Microsoft considering Xbox TV partnerships with Comcast, Verizon

Image
Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Comcast and Verizon for partnerships to stream traditional cable TV directly through the Xbox 360 console. The upcoming service was originally thought to be a threat to other video streaming services such as Netflix as well as to cable TV, but now it looks like Microsoft will be seeking cable TV as allies instead. Plans for live Xbox TV were first hinted at during E3 2011. At the time, Microsoft revealed that it was partnering with several content providers to stream live TV, but did not confirm who those partners would be and whether the service would be entirely internet-based or if it would work with traditional cable providers. Now, according to sources of DigiDay, Microsoft is seeking partnerships with Comcast and Verizon, with imminent deals that could go live within a month. Working with instead of against cable providers will help ensure larger selection of content and would allow Xbox 360 TV users to access cable subscriptions through Comc

Jobs foretells Apple’s Future in 1996 Interview

Image
A rarely seen (not for long) interview with Steve Jobs just a few months before his return after a 10-year absence has surfaced, in it the man speaking on how Apple will prosper in the future. What you’re about to see is a few simple points that Jobs makes in regards to what he sees as the then-failing company’s possibilities, including what’s obvious to us all now: innovation and brand loyalty. Have a look below and see what Jobs, then titled only as the Chairman and CEO of Pixar, knew before the whole rest of the world came to the same realization. Remember now that this is the summer of 1996. Apple isn’t doing so hot, Jobs is currently only working with Pixar, and PBS’ Wall $treet Week with Louis Rukeyser has invited the future ex-CEO of Apple to speak on several topics. The interviewer is the late Rukeyser, American financial specialist having worked for decades at that point on Wall Street in money matters. His first question is “What can we expect next from Pixar?” to which Jobs

iCloud being reset on September 22, signals imminent launch

Image
Apple has announced that it will be resetting all iCloud backup data on Thursday, September 22. The iCloud feature has been available to developers for testing since the release of the iOS 5 beta 2 build. Developers have been made aware from the beginning that any data backed up to iCloud during this time would be wiped clean before the final release of the platform. Hence, the September 22 date for the the wipe supports previous rumors that the iOS 5 golden master version, or essentially the final build, will be released sometime between September 23 and 30. This would mean that the final release will be installed on the iPhone 5 hardware before the end of October in time to ship and arrive by the rumored October 15 launch date. The message posted on the Apple Developer board reads: On Thursday, September 22, the iCloud Backup data will be reset. Backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup will be unavailable from 9 AM PDT – 5 PM PDT. If you attempt a backup or restore dur

Google’s Next Nexus Phone Details Roundup [Mid-Sept 2011, pre-release]

Image
Each time Google creates a new version of Android, they work with a manufacturer of smartphones or tablets as well as a processor manufacturer to create a hero device to host a completely vanilla (otherwise known as totally nude, clean) version of their software. The most recent examples of this come in the Nexus S, out for sale now on three carriers across the USA working with Google’s latest smartphone OS, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. For tablets, there’s the Motorola XOOM, available as both a Wi-fi only device and a Verizon-carried device featuring Google’s latest tablet-based mobile OS, Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Though the XOOM isn’t technically following the naming scheme, each Google Android hero phone is part of the “Nexus” line, the next of these set to feature the Android system to tie handsets and tablets together in one: Ice Cream Sandwich. While we still do not know the Android number (2.4 or 4.0), we have a collection of details on this device that’s sure to get you salivating. N

Verizon begins throttling 3G data customers, encourages upgrade to 4G

Image
If you’re a heavy data user and still grandfathered in a Verizon 3G unlimited data plan, which the carrier recently replaced with tiered data plans, you could be facing throttled data speeds. Late last week, the carrier began throttling the top 5 percent of its heaviest-use 3G unlimited data customers. Customers with a 4G LTE data plan or a 3G tiered data plan will not be affected. Hence, if you’re still clinging on to the 3G unlimited data plan you picked up just months ago with the Verizon iPhone 4, the carrier’s reps will be encouraging you to either switch to another device that supports 4G LTE, switch to a 3G tiered plan, or simply use more WiFi whenever you can. Once you’ve crossed over the line, your speeds will be throttled for the remainder of the current billing cycle as well as for the next full billing cycle. However, Verizon insists that its throttling or “Network Optimization” is different from the practices of rivals such as AT&T and T-Mobile. Instead of throttling y

Bi-directional OLEDs track distance, could spawn 3D touchscreens

Image
Bi-directional OLEDs capable not only of displaying graphics but of working as a camera have been upgraded to support measuring distance and inclination, and could well pave the way for a new type of touchscreen technology recognizing hovering fingertips and 3D gestures. The handiwork of the Fraunhofer IPMS, the new panels build on previous iterations tipped for use in head-up displays, and support up to VGA resolution in their latest form. “That makes them predestined not only for augmented reality via interactive data eye glasses but also for applications in the optical inspection” Fraunhofer researcher Uwe Vogel suggests. The actual technical side gets pretty complex, however, even when boiled down by the project’s engineers. ”By inverse-confocal imaging approach a point-source sensor with purely electronic scanning allows extremely compact sensor modules,” Constanze Großmann explains. Nonetheless, the potential for the OLED panels is unmistakable. “This opens completely new opportu

China Mobile talks LTE iPhone, inks 4G Clearwire deal

Image
Apple and China Mobile are in talks about a 4G iPhone, it has been revealed, though technological differences mean such a smartphone likely wouldn’t work on Verizon or AT&T’s LTE networks in the US. “China Mobile and Apple hope to find a solution for close collaboration” carrier chairman Wang Jianzhou told Bloomberg, before suggesting that the Cupertino company sounded enthusiastic about the prospect. ”We discussed this issue with Apple. We hope Apple will produce a new iPhone with TD-LTE. We have already got a positive answer from Apple.” Nonetheless, it’s not the first time that China Mobile has made promising noises about an LTE iPhone. Back in January, the carrier again suggested that Apple had agreed to make a version of its smartphone using TD-LTE. That may well have been premature, however; the commercial roll-out of the network isn’t expected to take place until 2012. Despite the absence of support for either China Mobile’s 3G TD-SCDMA or the upcoming TD-LTE, Wang says adop

Sony PlayStation Vita battery rumored to last only 3-5 hours per charge

Image
We have talked the PS Vita to death and we know just about all there is to know about the portable console. The new Sony portable is up for pre-order on GameStop for $249.99 on the WiFi only model and $299.99 for the 3G and WiFi version. One thing we always want to know about on gadgets when it comes time to buy is how long the battery lasts. The old PSP had a battery life in the real world up to roughly five hours depending on what you used it for. Sony originally said that the PS Vita would have a battery life on par with the original PSP. However, “par” is a word that has a lot of ambiguity to it one man’s par is another man’s sub-par. Sony has now come back and said that the PS Vita will only last about 3-5 hours on a charge. In the real world that will likely add up to even less playtime. Why the change in battery life? We don’t know, but perhaps Sony wanted to get more realistic in the face of people actually starting to order the PS Vita to head off complaints.

Sony unveils new RDP-X500IP speaker dock for iPhone

Image
Sony has unveiled a new iPhone speaker dock that promises big sound called the RDP-X500IP. The speaker dock is up for pre-order right now with an expected ship date of October 2. The docking station will cost $299.95. The iPhone dock is on the front of the device and Sony claims that the dock is made to work without you having to remove the case on your iPhone. That is a big deal since many docks force you to remove your case. The dock has dual passive radiators inside and an integrated subwoofer for deep bass. Sony’s S-Master Digital Amplifier is used inside for more performance. The device also has Clear Phase linear phase correction tech and a free app is offered that puts a clock on the iPhone screen and allows the user to adjust the sound settings. The woofer is a 3 5/8-inch and the satellites are 1 15/16. The dock measures 15 7/8 inches x 7 inches x 6 3/8 inches and weighs in at 6 pounds 15 ounces. The overall power output is 15W + 15W + 30W. The dock will also work with dockable

Analysts flock to advise Apple: Tarry on iPad 3 and buy TiVo

Image
A change of CEO has apparently invited a flurry of advice aimed at Apple, suggesting new chief Tim Cook should buy TiVo, create multiple iPhone sizes and be in “no rush” to launch the iPad 3. Although Steve Jobs’ replacement hasn’t actually asked for suggestions for Apple’s strategy, that hasn’t stopped J.P. Morgan analysts from pointing out that the Cupertino company can afford to take its time with the third-gen iPad, Benzinga reports, since rivals are still struggling to compete. “In our view, Apple should be in no rush” J.P. Morgan proffered in an investor note. “The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012. [Motorola] and RIM have been recent disappointments, and we expect more stumbles from others.” Meanwhile, MobileTrax analyst Gerry Purdy has spent the time to write an open letter to Cook, flagging up some of what he reckons would be “insanely great” things to do now that he’s at the helm. Ranging from rebranding – changing “i

Sony wants gamers to agree to new PSN TOS or be banned

Image
It you are a gamer on the PS3 and you like to play online games you need to be on the lookout when you log in for a pop up that is trying to get you to agree to new PSN terms of service. Apparently, somewhere in the tiny print there is a message that you can opt out of the new terms of service by sending a letter to Sony. However, you apparently still have to agree to them or you will not be allowed to access the PSN for online play. The new TOS apparently have wording in it to limit the suits that users can file against Sony in the event their data was among the information stolen in the massive PSN hack that happened a few months back. The new clause is “Binding Individual Arbitration” which is an agreement that the user will only sue individually and that Sony gets to choose the arbitrator. At the core of the new agreement, Sony is trying to limit class action suits. The problem here is that people that don’t agree in the next 30 days will be blocked from the service so in essence S

Ballmer: Metro iTunes app “welcome” if Apple inclined

Image
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said he hopes arch-rival Apple develops a Metro-style iTunes app for Windows 8, telling analysts that his company would “welcome” software support from device competitors. Ballmer specifically name-checked Apple and Amazon during the Q&A call, suggesting that although with Kindle and the upcoming Android-based Kindle tablet “they may have a device competitor, but they have certainly behaved like their fundamental business is the service.” Similarly, Apple might be competing with OS X and iOS, but Ballmer draws a distinction between the iTunes ecosystem that serves iPods, iPads, iPhones and Macs with digital media, and the hardware itself. Apple of course already offers an iTunes version for Windows, though it’s unclear whether the company will also develop a Metro version that fits into Microsoft’s new touch-centric interface in Windows 8. “Amazon is an example. They may have a device competitor, but they have certainly behaved like their fundamental

Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker busts onto the scene

Image
Bose is a premium brand and you can find tons of audio fans that think Bose makes great products and you can find a bunch that think the designs are horrible. If you are a Bose fan, the company has a new portable wireless speaker that you can take with you on the road called the SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker. As you can probably figure out, the speaker is designed to connect to Bluetooth smartphones and other gear for playback on the go. The speaker was designed to offer the user full-range audio from a single handheld enclosure with a small size. Seven got death sentence four times in Sialkot lynching case

Image
The Anti-Terrorism Court announced verdict in the case pertaining to the public lynching of two brothers a year ago in Sialkot. Anti-Terrorism Court Judge awarded four times death sentence to seven convicts, six were life imprisoned while five were acquitted. The ATC court awarded three year imprisonment to nine policemen including DPO Waqar Chohan. The court reserved the verdict at 1pm. Anti Terrorism court Judge is Mushtaq Ahmed Gondal. AOL, Google, and others sued for patent infringement on search filtering tech

Image
Some of the biggest search engines in the world have been sued along with a US retailing giant. The suit alleges that the firms are infringing on patents that have to do with relevance grouping on search results. The companies named in the suit are AOL, Google, IAC Search and Media, Gannett Company, and Target. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and it was field by I/P Engine, Inc. The suit alleges that the companies are infringing on a patent held by I/P Engine that has to do with relevance filtering technology for search results. The company also claims that the tech is used to place ads with more relevance online. I/P Engine says that it acquired the patents as part of a portfolio of patents that were purchased from Lycos. Lycos had acquired the patents in the purchase of a company called WiseWire Corporation. What the company is seeking in the suit is unknown right now, but I would assume it to be licensing fees and damages i

Windows 8 on ARM won’t run x86 apps Microsoft admits

Image
Windows 8 ARM PCs will not, in fact, have full app compatibility with software designed for x86 Windows 7 and 8 computers, Microsoft has confirmed, instead demanding that developers port their titles over to the new architecture. Despite earlier suggestions that seemed to indicate otherwise, Windows president Steven Sinofsky clarified during an analyst Q&A this week that while new apps coded for the Metro UI will work on both x86 and ARM tablets, laptops and other computers, existing software will not. In doing so, Sinofsky arguably used a little verbal slight of hand to work around a previous – apparently misconstrued – statement. Earlier in the week, the exec said that legacy apps from Windows 7 machines would work on Windows 8, something which many assumed meant both x86 and ARM devices. In fact, Sinofsky pointed out, so far there haven’t been any ARM Windows 7 machines, and we were incorrect to assume he was talking about ARM support. He also argues that Microsoft has “been ver
