Road to Sangam Movie Review

Image
One look at the promos of ROAD TO SANGAM and you realize that this isn't one of those films you watch every week. ROAD TO SANGAM, in fact, pricks your conscience and mirrors a reality. Wars have been fought and are still being fought in the name of religion. ROAD TO SANGAM tries to seek answers to the burning issue and in the process, also talks of partition and the Muslims in present-day India. Made with honest intentions, this one's targeted at connoisseurs of cinema. ROAD TO SANGAM tells the story of a God-fearing, devout Muslim mechanic named Hashmat Ullah [Paresh Rawal], who has been entrusted the job of repairing an old Ford engine, not knowing its historic significance. He is caught in a complex situation after a powerful bomb explosion rocks his town, leading to the arrest of innocent Muslim youths of his locality. A strike to work is called by the prominent leaders [played by Om Puri and Pawan Malhotra] of his community to protest against the unjust treatment meted

ISHQIYA Movie Review

Image
Get ready for tangy, pungent, sizzling and spicy stuff. Be forewarned, ISHQIYA isn't the fluffy, candyfloss, saccharine sweet story of lovers breaking into songs in mustard fields. In ISHQIYA, you just don't know what turn the story may take next. Not just the story, even the characters here are so impulsive and unpredictable. You need to have a strong stomach to absorb ISHQIYA. It's high on drama, it's wild, it's real. But it's not dark, it's not sleazy, it's not crass. Frankly, you don't expect debutante director Abhishek Chaubey to make a stereotypical fare thanks to the tutelage by his guru Vishal Bhardwaj, who loves to swim against the tide and undertake risks in film after film. You could call ISHQIYA a distant cousin of OMKARA. Set in Gorakhpur in North India, the film has a rustic feel, depicts characters that may make you uncomfortable and is laced with saucy lingo. Yet, it's different than OMKARA. Final word? You can't help but

Junior Bachchan sets new TVR record with 'National Bingo Night'

Image
First it was the legend Amitabh Bachchan with the game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' who set the cash registers ringing with unheard of TVR, and now proving his own is son Abhishek who broke all previous limits to emerge as the top contender when it comes to the TVR game. We learnt that with the recently launched game show 'National Bingo Night' on Colors, Abhishek has become the new rage, setting the highest record in terms of TVR (Television Viewership Ratings) for an opening night as compared to most of the other shows hosted by Bollywood stars. The first episode of the show which was aired last Saturday (Jan 23rd) garnered a TVR of 5.1 which is much higher than the first episode of shows like 'Bigg Boss Season 3' (TVR- 4.6), 'Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?' (TVR- 4.6) and 'Fear Factor- Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 2' (TVR- 4.4) Speaking about this, a visibly elated Abhishek said, "I have just been informed by the Colors team that the op

The growing proximity between the Bachchans and Shah Rukh Khan just got thicker. So he asked Karan Johar to quickly dial Mr. Bachchan who put him through the producers of Rann . The producers gladly arranged for a print of Rann to be delivered to SRK's place on Thursday evening." After watching the film till very late on Thursday night, Shah Rukh Khan sent an appreciative sms to the film's producer which read, "Very kind of you to send the film across. Very intense very topical...good performances all round. The viewpoint is very current." Apparently, Shah Rukh wanted to invite Mr Bachchan to view Rann in his home theatre. Alas! Mr Bachchan was in Delhi on Thursday nig

Bachchans wish Vidya all the best for 'Ishqiya'

Actress Vidya Balan couldn't have asked for more. No other than the Bachchan family wished her 'all the best' for her latest outing 'Ishqiya' that is releasing alongside the Amitabh starrer 'Rann' Friday. Vidya starred with Amitabh and Abhishek in the critically-acclaimed and commercial hit 'Paa'. She played Amitabh's mother in the movie. 'All the best to her (Vidya),' said Amitabh here at the red carpet premiere of 'Rann' in the capital Thursday evening. Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek who were also present at the do, echoed the same. 'We wish all the very best to her,' the couple said in unison. Also present at the event was the star cast of the film Riteish Deshmukh, Gul Panag and director Ram Gopal Varma. Vivek Oberoi also made an unexpected entry at the event. Co-produced by Madhu Mantena and Sheetal Talwar, 'Rann' also stars Paresh Rawal in a pivotal role. It is about the conflict between b

Watch 'Rann', Amitabh urges media

While his latest outing 'Rann' has been touted as an anti-media film, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan maintains otherwise. He has urged the fourth estate to watch the film and decide for themselves. Clad in a maroon velevet bandgala, the 67-year-old, who was here for the red carpet premiere of the movie, insisted the film is a 'pro-media' drama. 'You (the media) should go and watch it. It's actually a very pro media film. I hope you enjoy it,' Amitabh said. Also present at the event were some members of the star cast Riteish Deshmukh and Gul Panag and director Ram Gopal Varma . Aishwarya Rai , Abhishek Bachchan and Vivek Oberoi also made it to the do. Co-produced by Madhu Mantena and Sheetal Talwar, 'Rann' also stars Paresh Rawal in a pivotal role.

Katrina Out ! Fatrina In?

Image
Yoooo hooooo ….. it's a great one for the tabloids!! Reportedly, Fatrina, er sorry, Zarine Khan of 'Veer' will replace …. Katrina Kaif , in the sequel to 'Partner!!' Expectedly, both director David Dhawan and Lady Khan have been making the right evasive sounds and dodging the incendiary issue. The shirtless Khan has made his fondness known for his lead Khan in no uncertain terms. "He said that I was destiny's child since I was chosen for 'Veer' over so many other girls." gushed an awed Zarine to the media. "I'd heard about Salman being short tempered, but not once did he lose his cool with me! Though I must confess that I was really scared of facing his anger." Guess, Katrina might do the honours now ….

Christie's 2009 art sales down 24 pct from 2008

Christie's auctioneers sold 2.1 billion pounds ($3.3 billion) worth of art in 2009, a decrease of 24 percent in sterling terms and a 35 percent drop in dollar terms over 2008, it announced on Thursday. The results put the company ahead of its main rival Sotheby's, against which Christie's scored a 56 percent global auction share, it added. Despite the overall decline in auction and private sales, largely due to the financial crisis, Christie's said values for high-end works remained solid. While the number of lots offered in major auctions last year fell sharply as sellers held out for a return to record prices set during the recent boom, the art market avoided the dramatic collapse that some experts had feared. Key to underpinning values were private buyers from the Americas, the Middle East and China, while Russians, a major factor behind the pre-crisis rises, spent less in 2009 than the year before. "The continuing growth and global nature of the art ma

U.S. activist, historian Howard Zinn dies at 87

Image
Historian and activist Howard Zinn, whose 1980 book "A People's History of the United States" was a rallying cry for the American left in a conservative era, has died aged 87. Family members said Zinn, who for decades was a fixture in the U.S. civil rights and anti-war movements and lived in Auburndale, Massachusetts, died of a heart attack on Wednesday while traveling in California. He was a professor emeritus in the political science department at Boston University and taught there from 1964 to 1988. "He had a deep sense of fairness and justice for the underdog. But he always kept his sense of humor. He was a happy warrior," said Caryl Rivers, journalism professor at Boston University. Rivers and Zinn were among a group of faculty members who in 1979 defended the right of the school's clerical workers to strike and were threatened with dismissal after refusing to cross a picket line. "A People's History of the United States" chron

I will never wear a bikini: Vidya Balan

While her contemporaries Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta are flaunting their curves in bikinis, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is happy and comfortable in her favourite attire - the sari - and says she will never wear a bikini. 'I don't see myself in a bikini ever. I am very comfortable in my saris and other Indian attire. Even if the script demands, I don't think I will ever wear one,' she said at a press conference in the Big Cinemas here Thursday. Previously, Vidya had received a lot of flak for her dressing sense and plump body. Taking all that criticism in a positive manner, the 30-year-old actress has slimmed drastically and is looking ravishing in her sleek avatar. She is seen wearing mostly saris at functions and promotional events. 'I have started loving the seedha palla (straight fall) of the sari. I am very comfortable in Indian attires and I guess I carry them off pretty well,' she said.

Seven-year-old UK boy drawing Picasso comparisons

A seven-year-old British boy is being hailed as an art genius after selling 16 paintings for 18,000 pounds ($29,280) in just 14 minutes. Kieron Williamson from the eastern English town of Holt has artistic skills that would be the envy of any serious painter and drawn comparisons to Pablo Picasso, a child prodigy who became one of the most recognised artists of the 20th century. Inspired by his local Norfolk landscape, on the East Anglia coast, Williamson's atmospheric pastels, watercolours and oil paintings -- which are valued at up to 1,500 pounds each -- show a maturity well beyond his years. It all began on a family holiday to Cornwall on the southwest English coast when Kieron was five. Inspired by the harbour view, he asked his parents for his first sketch-pad. From that moment on, he was hooked, according to his father Keith Williamson. "When he first started painting he would be up every morning at six and we'd be woken up by the chink of jam-jars and h

Was Vivek following Aishwarya-Abhishek in Delhi?

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi seems to have taken a fancy to following star couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan . He did it yet again here Thursday evening, almost a fortnight after reportedly found tailing them in Mumbai. Vivek made an unexpected late entry at the premiere of 'Rann', at the PVR Select Citywalk, where Aishwarya and Abhishek were present for the red carpet premiere of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer. Vivek, who was linked with Aishwarya earlier, arrived hastily at the venue half an hour after the premiere had begun, adjusting his cuff links and with his bodyguards in tow. The actor bumped his leg on a barricade before he was ushered on the red carpet - making a lonesome sight with no one to walk beside him. The star cast of 'Rann' - Riteish Deshmukh, Gul Panag , director Ram Gopal Varma apart from Amitabh - had already moved into the theatre by then. Aishwarya and Abhishek were also in the multiplex. 'It's strange to see Vi

How to Adjust Your Computer Environment to Prevent Eye Strain and RSI

Image
Let’s face it: being a computer geek isn’t the healthiest hobby in the world. Staring at that bright screen for hours at a time will affect our health in many ways. But there are many things you can do to improve your health without having to stop using your computer altogether. Time your breaks with Workrave (Windows/Linux) or AntiRSI (Mac) Workrave is a useful tool to keep track of how much time you spend on your computer. It nests itself in the taskbar and displays a countdown clock for your micro break, another one for your rest break and a third one for your daily time limit. I’ve configured my clocks as follows: a 20-second break every 15 minutes, a 3-minute break every 30 minutes and a daily limit of three hours. Rather than using the daily limit timer as an actual maximum, I use it as a “guilt-free” time limit. I try not to go over it too much when possible. There are no scientifically recommended settings that work for everyone, but it is worth noting that it’s better to tak

Importance of Long Tail Keywords in SEO

The interest in SEO is sparked from the desire to barge in to the first page of search results. If a site is not featured in the first page then it means that it is not featured at all. It has been proved that the interest of the user is sustained only for the first page of search results. With thousands of web pages vying for the first page, for the same keyword, it becomes a difficult task for the search engines to rank the pages. So the search engines follow various algorithms like inbound links, popularity and other factors to rank the sites, which is a bit complex to comprehend. But the core of search engine optimization, the use of appropriate keywords, remains unchanged and will be the same in the future years as well. Of course, we need to consider the semantic indexing followed in recent times to comply with the search engines’ ranking criteria. As the competition increases day by day, those keywords with less competition offer some hope for the seo specialists who desperat

Katrina: Salman looked after me

Image
Salman Khan may have cast Zarine Khan as the princess in VEER, but it is his real life girl Katrina Kaif , who actually looks like a princess for sure. Katrina is Karan Johar 's celebrity guest this week on Sony's Lift Kara De... and she definitely "lifted" the show with her presence. She is fun, she is sporting and for once she isn't all that politically correct. To Karan's probing questions there are candid answers. When Karan asked Kat, who are the people who helped this 19-year-old girl when she landed in Mumbai without knowing a soul in this city, she said: "Salman Khan, his family and friends looked after me." Of course, preceded by designer Anna Singh and directors like David Dhawan , Anees Bazmee (friends of Salman of course). To Karan's query whether she is single, she sidesteps the issue saying: "I believe that until you are married you are single!" Clever!

At 47, Bon Jovi feels 18

Image
Rock star Jon Bon Jovi is worried about ageing and receding hairline because he feels like a teenager even though he is 47 years old. 'I find it hard to believe I'm 47 already, because I still feel like 18,' Bon Jovi has been quoted as saying by contactmusic.com. But he doesn't see himself singing in his 60s like Rolling Stones rocker Mick Jagger. 'I don't plan on being the next Mick Jagger and to keep on going till my late 60s. But at the moment I don't see a reason why I should stop.' The 'Living On A Prayer' hitmaker says he regularly treats his receding hairline so he doesn't end up bald. 'Let me tell you, I am so worried. I look at guys like Sting and think, 'Well, he's cool about losing his hair,' but I'm already losing a bit and I'm so aware of it. Someone told me that you have to regularly massage your scalp so I do that all the time,' he said.
