2011 The Year of NVIDIA dominating Android Superphones and tablets

Image
The year 2011 has been a time of many advancements for Android, not least of all in the land of processors. In the United States, the Motorola ATRIX 4G was the first dual-core Android handset to hit the shelves, while the first dual-core tablet was the Motorola XOOM. Besides both of these devices being Motorola, what’s do they both have in common? They’ve both got the power of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor inside. From the very start of this dual-core revolution here in the USA, NVIDIA has been dominating the market. When this post is released, we’ve got our full Android device directory at Device.AC up and active. In this directory we’ve got the large majority of Android devices listed, each of the dual-core devices thus far released posted in full. According to this directory, and according to every other directory for that matter, NVIDIA has thus far dominated the market of dual-core processor-toting Android devices in both Android tablets and Android superphones. When compared to ri

iTunes Replay to offer TV/movie re-downloads, maybe streaming, imminently

Image
Apple’s streaming ambitions are again under the microscope, with rumors of an iTunes Replay service that would allow TV shows and movies to be re-downloaded and, potentially, streamed to an Apple TV. Working much asiCloud will for music purchases, AppAdvice suggests, iTunes Replay will apparently give users access to content they bought through iTunes as far back as January 1 2009. That’s despite that content not necessarily being bought on the Apple device the user wants to view it on today. According to the rumors – which have supposedly been independently verified – compatible content will be flagged with an “iTunes Replay eligible” icon and available to re-access on an Apple TV and, potentially, other iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. Licensing limitations would supposedly limit some content to a total of five re-downloads, and it’s unclear how that might impact streaming. Apple may also include re-downloads of music under the same iTunes Replay banner, sources indicate, though

Space Shuttle Columbia part found in drought parched lake in East Texas

Image
There are few key moments in life that I will always remember. Things like the birth of my kids, my wedding day, and a few others. Some of the days I will never forget aren’t good things though. I will always remember where I was when the Space shuttle Challenger blew up and I will always remember where I was when the Columbia blew up. In fact, I live in the area of East Texas where much of the debris from the shuttle was found. The drought in this area and the very high temperatures have made most of the lakes in the area shrivel to a fraction of their previous size. This isn’t a good thing for the area, but the drought has helped in one aspect. A new piece of the Space Shuttle Columbia has been found in one of the lakes that have shriveled due to lack of rain and high temperatures. The piece is described as a four-foot diameter tank that provided power and water for shuttle missions. NASA has confirmed that the part indeed belonged to the Columbia. The shuttle part was found in a lak

US, Canada, and Mexico to share wireless spectrum near borders

Image
If you live in part of the US near a border between Canada or Mexico you might end up with access to more wireless spectrum than you have now. The FCC has announced that it has worked out deals with Mexico and Canada that would allow the sharing of certain frequencies of wireless spectrum in border areas. The FCC expects that the move will allow for the faster and larger roll out of 4G wireless broadband for areas that are currently lacking in broadband options. The spectrum deal will also allow more coverage and availability for public safety and emergency response communications for fire, police, and EMS responders. The deal will see spectrum in the 700MHz and 800MHz bands shared with Canada. In Mexico, the deal covers only 700Mhz spectrum. This sort of wireless spectrum is the key in Obama’s plan to get broadband access to more parts of the US. Wireless access is the only viable way to get broadband in some remote areas of the country.

Google+ and iCloud win Developer hearts as Facebook future fades

Image
The lure of Google+ is enough to keep developers from worrying about Android patent issues, according to the latest survey, with the fast-growing social network name-checked along with Apple iCloud as the top driving factors amid mobile growth and adoption. Google+ and iCloud’s engagement and cloud-connectivity are of prime interest to developers, Appcelerator discovered, especially with their potential to squeeze out Facebook as dominant in mobile mindshare, but they spared some time to discuss the limiting factors potentially holding back Android tablet success. 66-percent of developers reckon Google+ can “beat” Facebook in the long-term, more than believe Apple’s combination of strong Twitter integration in iOS 5.0 and the existing Ping social network will succeed. The potential for Google to bake mapping, YouTube, search and other services into Google+ is the main reason for their confidence, though the fledgling network is also seen as “showing more innovation” than Facebook. BlackBerry Curve 9360 outed: Oddly absent from RIM’s reveal

Image
RIM has no shortage of phones to show us this morning – the Torch 9850/9860 for one, and the Torch 9810 - but one thing it didn’t bring was a new Curve. That’s strange, since it seems to have one waiting in the wings:OneMobileRing has apparently received a production-ready BlackBerry Curve 9360, the replacement to RIM’sCurve 3G 9100 from last year. Specifications for the new QWERTY candybar haven’t been revealed, though looking at the photos it clearly has 3G, an optical trackpad, full keyboard and microUSB connectivity. There’s also BlackBerry 7, the company’s new OS. So, was RIM meant to announce the Curve 9360 this morning, but decided on a change of plans at the eleventh hour? According to at least one leaked T-Mobile USA roadmap, RIM is readying the Curve 9360 for release on August 31, so the Canadian firm hasn’t long to get its story straight.

25m Google+ visitors says ComScore as social use surges

Image
Google+ is believed to have surpassed 25m visitors, with the latest figures from tracking firmcomScore suggesting that the new social network is thundering at full speed toward Facebook’s head start. The new estimate – including over 6m visitors from the US – indicates that Google broke the 25m barrier in less than a month of operation. Back in late July, comScore’s last batch of stats claimed that Google+ had seen 20m visitors. Official usage figures are in shorter supply, however; Google has only said that it has 10m registered users, though that number was mentioned back on July 14 and is likely to have grown significantly in the intervening period. The discrepancy in the various counts is in part down to what each organization is measuring: Google counts registered users of Google+, while comScore looks at overall unique traffic to the site, including those visitors who look at public posts but don’t necessarily have their own accounts. Still, it’s an impressive figure nonetheless,

Qualcomm Snapdragon Line Renamed, Quad-Core Confirmed for 2011

Image
In an investor call this week, Qualcomm has updated their Snapdragon naming scheme for all SoCs in the near future, making it much easier for the every day consumer to get on board with purchasing devices based on their processors. In this same call, Qualcomm noted their plans for quad-core devices with multiple times the power of today’s Snapdragon chips as well as the ability to work with 4G LTE networks. Snapdragon will from this moment forward be known as S1, S2, S3, or S4, the final chapter in this four-piece epic being made on 28nm and quad-core. In that the new roadmap has been simplified from the old MSM8x55 to the new system of S1, S2, S3, and S4. This system is broken down by generation, current dual-core devices being inside the S3 series, this containing devices such as the T-Mobile myTouch 4G, HP TouchPad, HTC Sensation, and HTC EVO 3D. This generation will continue to be the top tier until the near end of 2011, the first chips inside the “Next Gen” or S4 generationcoming

Apple gets fined $2,829 in Korea for location tracking

Image
Apple has been fighting several legal battles around the world in relation to the location tracking scandal. If you thought, Apple would be subject to huge penalties for tracking the whereabouts of users that isn’t accurate in all countries. The South Korea telecom regulator has fined Apple a whopping 3 million won. That works out to a mere $2,829 for collecting location data on iPhone users inside the country. According to the Korean Communications Commission, the results of a four-month investigation determined that even when iPhone users had location services turned off Apple was still collecting user location data. The collection of that data is said to have happened from June 22, 2010 to May 4, 2011. This is the second meager fine that has been assessed against Apple in South Korea. Apple settled a tracking lawsuit with a Korean man for the equivalent of $950. The settlement was compensation over “psychological stress” and infringement on the man’s constitutional right to privacy.

Sony Two will tablet tease part four brings more Rube Goldberg machine love

Image
The coolest thing so far about the Sony S1 and S2 tablets is the video teasers that Sony had been putting on YouTube. I really like the Rube Goldberg-style machines that are very complex looking and use all sorts of interesting methods from balls to bearings to activate the next stage in the machine while showing off some features of the tablets. So far, there have been three parts of the S1 and S2 tablet teasers. The first video surfaced back in mid-June. The new installation sees the same sort of mechanization of the machine with the plastic people figurines moving around and all sorts of stuff going on around the figures. I like the bouncing ball bearings that fly over and activate things. I always wonder when I see these videos how long it takes to set the shoot up. I bet there are ball bearings flying everywhere as the machine is tweaked. Check out the fourth video in the series below. Sony also notes that the fifth installation will be coming “soon” and will show the whole story.

Huawei Vision pairs Gingerbread with HTC and Samsung style [Update: Price]

Image
Huawei, so far, has been content to push out low-cost Android smartphones and the odd tablet; now it seems the company has set its sights far higher. The Huawei Vision pairs a 3.7-inch touchscreen with Qualcomm’s 1GHz MSM8255 processor, 512MB of RAM and 2GB of ROM, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread in an HTC-style unibody chassis that will be available in silver, rose gold and charcoal. On the back is a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash, capable of both stills and 720p HD video. Connectivity includes WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a microUSB 2.0 port, along with a microSD card slot (for up to 32GB cards) and GPS/A-GPS. Sensors include the usual array of G-sensor, proximity and light, and there’s a 1,400mAh battery too. That’s impressive, considering the Vision is only 9.9mm thin at its narrowest point, and weighs 121g. Huawei has managed to squeeze in an GM radio, and preloads various 3D games – including perennial favorite Angry Birds – and its own 3D interface on t

AT&T BlackBerry Torch 9810 4G due this month; Vodafone UK grabs Torch duo [Video]

Image
Carriers haven’t been slow in jumping on RIM’s new BlackBerry range, with AT&T leading the charge in the US. The operator has announced that, as expected , the BlackBerry Torch 9810 with HSPA+ will arrive on its 4G network from August , while the BlackBerry Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 will launch later in 2011. Meanwhile, Vodafone has led the charge on the new ‘Berries in the UK. Vodafone UK will be offering the Torch 9860 and Torch 9810, though release dates for the two handsets haven’t been confirmed. The carrier had already confirmed it would be offering the BlackBerry Bold 9900 , though again there’s no sign of a release date on the carrier’s site. However, UK retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U have announced that they will be offering the Bold 9900 from August 18; pricing will be from free on a £31 ($51) a month contract from Carphone Warehouse, and free on a £35 ($57) contract from Phones4U. Neither retailer is describing it as an exclusive, so we’re guessing Vodafone –

BlackBerry Torch 9810 4G smartphone headed to AT&T “soon”

Image
Today RIM rolled out the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 and our pal Chris has already had his geeky mitts on the smartphone. You can check out his hands on video here. In the US, the smartphone will be coming to the AT&T network and it is the first 4G Blackberry device ever. Granted it’s not the real 4G LTE network the device operates on, but the HSPA+ network little better than 3G. The Torch 9810 is a slider phone with the Blackberry keyboard under the larger touchscreen on the front. The design allows the user to type using the touchscreen or the keyboard depending on how it’s working. The smartphone also runs the new Blackberry 7 OS. The phone packs in a 1.2GHz processor and has 8GB of onboard memory. That storage can be expanded with up to 32GB via a memory card. The rear camera can also record 720p HD video. The 3.25-inch screen has a resolution of 640 x 480 and Chris reckons the screen is a solid update to the original Torch. The camera shoots 5MP photos along with that HD video I

Amazon Free App of the Day isn’t necessarily good for the developer

Image
I think most of us are the same when it comes to apps. We will pay for some of them if they look really cool, but mostly we want free apps. This is what Android users tend to keep an eye on the Amazon Free App of the Day being offered daily since the apps are free for the single day only. The deal seems like good exposure, but one developer has found that being selected for the featured promotion wasn’t a good thing at all. ShiftyJelly reports that its app Pocket Casts was chosen as the free app of the day and since Amazon made no money, it was paid no money for its app. The devs agreed to the promotion anyway in hopes of making some money on the back end after the free deal was over during the main page 14-day promotion. The day Pocket Casts was free Amazon gave away 101,491 copies of the app and had the app sold at the normal 20% cut the dev would have earned $54,80.14 that single day. Instead they earned nothing, they were then angered to see that Amazon slashed the price of the app

MetroPCS eyes VoIP roll out in early 2012

Image
The amount of bandwidth that all wireless carriers have for voice calls and data use is finite. There comes a point where the bandwidth just isn’t there to support more calls and more services in some areas. To help alleviate this bandwidth issue and speed the network overall, most of the major carriers and even some of the smaller ones are moving to carrier VoIP solutions to help spread the load of voice calls over to other parts of the network. MetroPCS is set to become the next carrier to offer VoIP service to its customers. According to the CEO of the firm, Roger Linquist MetroPCS will start to offer VoIP service via its LTE network in early 2012. MetroPCS is right now migrating its SMS and MMS services over to an IMS-driven VoLTE service and will move the current circuit-switched voice service to the same service as the SMS and MMS messaging. Currently MetroPCS has CDMA 1X network and LTE network in 14 major markets around the country. The company plans to have LTE service in the

Samsung may bid on InterDigital patent portfolio according to source

Image
Patents make the tech world go around. Patents are the source of income for many firms and allow major tech companies like Apple and Samsung to build products like smartphones and tablets that we all know and love. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Samsung has been approached by InterDigital to become part of the bidding for the InterDigital patent portfolio. Samsung isn’t the only major tech firm looking at the patents though. Apple and Google are also reportedly looking at purchasing the patents according to the sources. InterDigital holds many patents that have to do with mobile technology used to transfer information. The company has hired bankers to handle the process as it determines if it will sell or not. InterDigital has some patents that are used by some of the largest handset makers in the business. Some think that InterDigital could go for as much as $5 billion. InterDigital has around 8,800 patents that are up for grabs in the bidding. Some of the patented tech can

Ultrabook MacBook Air-rivals sabotaged by Intel greed say insiders

Image
The biggest obstacle to Intel’s Ultrabook notebook drive might end up being Intel itself, according to the latest mutterings out of Taipei. The chip manufacturer’s ploy to take on the MacBook Air with Wintel ultraportables will fail to hit its original sub-$1,000 price promise, DigiTimes‘ sources claim, because Intel’s own hardware prices push total cost above that point. In order to rival the MacBook Air’s slimline chassis and lengthy battery life, Intel is pushing notebook manufacturers toward a new production process of fully-soldered PCBs, li-polymer batteries, metal casings and SSD storage. Components traditionally separate in regular notebooks will be combined for ultrabooks, something which is expected to “completely change the existing notebook production process.” Altogether, Intel hardware comprises one third of the total cost of putting together an ultrabook. If Intel doesn’t push its prices down, the sources claim, ultrabooks will never be able to beat Apple’s Air pricing,

Facebook buys iPad book publisher Push Pop Press

Image
Facebook is the largest social network around even if Google+ is gaining ground on Facebook. Facebook is always out for new ways to increase the engagement that users find on the site. To help improve the tech behind the scenes Facebook has announced that it has purchased an iPad book publisher called Push Pop Press. Facebook and Push Pop Press insist that the social network isn’t getting into the iPad book publishing business. The tech behind the publishers business is what Facebook wanted. Push Pop Press is the publisher of the digital version of the Al Gore book “Our Choice.” A blog post about eh purchase at the publisher notes that the tech will be integrated into Facebook to make sharing your story easier. Facebook said, “We’re thrilled to confirm that we’ve acquired Push Pop Press, a startup whose groundbreaking software challenges the way people publish and consume digital content.” The speculation is that Facebook might be using the tech from Push Pop Press in its iPad app that

Android malware twice as common today compared to six months ago

Image
The incidence of malware and security threats is growing every day across a number of markets. Many think about networks and computers when it comes to security threats, but the number of threats on smartphones like the Android platform and others are growing every day. A new report was published by Lookout that claims Android users are twice as likely to come across malware today than they were six months ago. The report estimates that 500,000 users of Android were affected by malware in the first half of the year. During the first half of the year, apps with malware inside went from 80 to 400. The two most common malware attacks against Android devices are DroidDream and GGTracker. DroidDream was found in more than 80 apps and was designed to take over a device. GGTracker is thought to be the first malware to steal money from Android users by signing them up for premium text services. The services the app registered people for were $10 to $50 per service. The report shows that so-cal

BlackBerry Torch 9810 Hands-On [Video]

Image
It’s only really when the display on the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 lights up that you realize you’re looking at a different phone to the original Torch. RIM’s industrial design team looks to have taken a break with this new QWERTY/touch hybrid slider, leaving it little different to the first-gen model. Still, with the relatively low resolution display of the first Torch being one of our primary complaints, we can’t really argue too much with 640 x 480 in comparison. Viewing angles are a little shallow, but head-on it’s bright and crisp, and a solid improvement over the previous version. The slider-mechanism snaps open with a reassuring click, and the BlackBerry keyboard is, though slightly shallower than the candybar-format phones, still considerably better than most other QWERTY devices from rival manufacturers. BlackBerry 7 bears a strong resemblance – on the surface at least – to QNX on the PlayBook, and is well suited to a smaller, 3.25-inch display. The silver finish to the chassi

McAfee talks about attack dubbed Operation Shady RAT

Image
Most of us follow all the hacking stories that have been surfacing over the last year or so and think that the rate of hacking is gone up dramatically. According to McAfee, it’s not so much that attacks are increasing, it’s just that the attacks are now being announced instead of hidden away. McAfee is also publishing a new report that it says is one of the most comprehensive analysis ever revealed of victim profiles from a five-year long targeted operation by a specific actor dubbed Operation Shady RAT. McAfee says that most of the victims of the attack have long since fixed the vulnerabilities that allowed the attack. McAfee was able to gain access to one of the Command & Control servers that the intruders used in the attack and collected logs from the server that show the extent of the victim population since 2006. The attacks were apparently started by sending an email with a malware attachment to someone with access at the target company. Once executed the malware would start

BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 Hands-On [Video]

Image
Lingering memories – few of them good – about RIM’s BlackBerry Storm series of smartphones left us understandably wary of the Torch 9850/9860, but first impressions are surprisingly good. The all-touch handset – bearing RIM’s biggest resolution display to-date – is impressively thin (for a BlackBerry, at least) with a neatly curved profile that nestles well into the hand. Build quality on these pre-production prototypes was solid, and the touchscreen bright with fair viewing angles. Best of all, there’s no physical-keyboard-mimicking magic hiding behind it; instead, you get a responsive capacitive panel and a phone which shifts through BB7 swiftly thanks to the 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM. BlackBerry phones live and die by their text entry, generally, and the on-screen ‘board on the Torch 9850/9860 understandably falls short of physical keys. Still, it’s well spaced and – while the 15:9 aspect display makes for a fairly long, narrow panel – we didn’t feel too horizontally squashe

Vivatar 690 HD underwater digital pocket video camera surfaces

Image
It’s summer and that means that people all around the country are heading to the lake, beach, or pool to keep cool. That also means that most folks will want to snap some photos so they can hold onto the summertime memories. Cameras and water don’t generally mix but Vivitar has a new pocket camcorder that is not only able to survive some spills and splashes, but can shoot full HD video underwater. The camera is called the Vivitar 690 HD and the camera is waterproof and sports an integrated mic and speaker for underwater filming. It stores video to a SD memory card making the content easy to share and move to your computer if needed. The camera also has software that allows for easy uploading of photos and video to Facebook and other photos and video sharing sites including YouTube. The 690 HD has 4x digital zoom, 720p video resolution, and a 2-inch screen making it easy to see what you are recording under and above water. It has a HDMI output and gets power from a pair of AA batteries.

Sony PlayStation 3D monitor to miss Christmas shopping season (barely)

Image
I know that my PS3 is sitting there all ready to play 3D games whenever I want to or to allow me to watch 3D flicks as well. I also know that I am in no way ready to buy a 3D TV at this point. The sets are still not cheap enough or good enough for me to think about upgrading the living room. If you feel the same, but you really have a desire for some 3G gaming on the cheap you might want to consider the PlayStation 3D monitor. Sony has now set the release date for the screen and glasses combo for your PS3 and the price is $499. The little 24-inch screen isn’t exactly big screen gaming, but it will support 3D. You get the 24-inch screen, a pair of active 3D glasses and a cool 3D game called MotorStorm Apocalypse. That game is pretty cool we have it and play 2D style around my house. The launch date for the screen has been set at December 31. That is a very odd launch date to me; I wonder why they didn’t offer it on November 31 or at least before Christmas. I am sure this kit would be on

Book Review: Amitabh Lexicon

Image
'Amitabh Bachchan - 68. 174 films spread over 41 years of career captured in 2833 headwords of the English dictionary.' At the face value, it seemed like an interesting preposition to go through 'Amitabh Lexicon' which, as author Bhawana Somaaya explains, basically functions on randomly chosen words from the English dictionary. So the idea is to point at any word in the dictionary and present to reader a glimpse of a scene from Bachchan's film which details this word. 'Hmmm okay, sounds like a good idea', I said to myself as I started flipping over this hardbound (and hence rather heavy) 300 odd page book. As it turned out, what sounded like an exciting idea didn't quite turn out to be an enthralling experience once the novelty died down after browsing through just 50 odd words. Yes, the book is certainly an experiment of sorts and in that perspective it does deserve some recognition at the least. But unlike quite a few other books which have been

All about Dia Mirza in Better Homes and Gardens

Image
There's something about this (ex) Miss Asia Pacific Dia Mirza that makes her 'mag-magne- magnetic'! And there's something about her, which also is the centre point in this month's issue of Better Homes and Gardens. Dia, in this issue, speaks all about herself and her environment. She says, "I attribute my complexion to my genes, hormones, yoga, meditation and dance work." On the professional front, she says, "We (partners Zayed Khan and Sahil Sangha) have finished shooting for our debut film  Love Breakups Zindagi ." She also adds, "I feel that I am blessed to be living my dream. God has been very kind to me." In this issue, she also speaks about the spiritual side of hers. She says, "If you are connected to your soul, nothing can ever challenge you in life." She also reveals about many of her indulgences, which includes cooking, music, board games, spending time with friends, reveling in the floral fragrance of  rajniga

Katrina Kaif to buy Harley Davidson

Image
Move over, John. Katrina loves to rev up the two-wheeler as much as John Abraham or Shahid Kapoor. She's quite often on the streets of Mumbai on a friend's bike speeding away all alone at lightning speed. That, according to the lissome actress, is the biggest high she could give herself. And now she's planning to buy her own bike. A Harley Davidson, no less. Says Katrina, "Yes, I love riding bikes. I borrow my friend's wheels. But I plan to buy my own very shortly. I was in fact livid when some critics wrote the shots of me riding in  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara  were fudged. Hello?! That's no duplicate. That's yours truly riding the bike. I do it all the time. One of these days I might get caught because I am generally out alone riding my bike at time when the world is asleep." In fact, just yesterday at a promotional event of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Katrina took Hrithik for a bike ride in front of the entire media. Surely Katz is the new biker g

Phhir Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS Though more often than not films coming from the house of Vikram Bhatt do boast of soundtrack which is at the least decent, one isn't too sure about  Phhir  since it has taken quite some time to find an arrival on the stands. Composers Sharib Toshi and Raghav Sachar are capable of surprising the listener but one still plays on Phhir  only reluctantly while hoping that there is something good that eventually comes out of it. MUSIC It's an Emraan Hashmisque beginning for ' Yaadein ' which the actor would have lapped up in past, present as well as future without much ado. A club track with a thump to it which has a catchy enough rhythm to make you nod in appreciation, this Sharib-Toshi composed number (with Sharib coming behind the mike) has conventional but effective lyrics by Sagar that convey sadness of the protagonist who is missing his beloved. Thought at times it reminds one of the kind of sound that one had heard in  Raaz - The Mystery Continues

I Am Kalam Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS There are some music albums where it is virtually impossible to dream of any commercial gains.  I Am Kalam  is one of them. With largely unknown names in front or behind the camera, a bunch of new composers who don't quite have chartbusters to their names and an unconventional theme and genre of the film,  I Am Kalam doesn't quite make you sit up and get all excited about what those eight songs have to offer here. MUSIC K.K. kick-starts the album with ' Chand Taare ' which is about a bunch of children making merry with what life has to offer to them. A situational track, it is composed by Abhishek Ray with lyrics by Manavendra who takes a poetic approach. Though the song is well tuned, it doesn't quite have much appeal for a wider audience. It is repeated in a 'children' version where Mansi leads the pack along with other chorus singers. This one actually sounds better than the earlier version since coming together of a bunch of children

Aarakshan Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS Despite the fact that Prakash Jha's last film  Raajneeti  had boasted of some memorable music, there is still wee bit apprehension about what really would be in store for Aarakshan . Yes there is a romantic pairing of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone but then given the serious/topical nature of the film, it must indeed have been a challenge for composer trip Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyricist Prasoon Joshi to get the kind of soundtrack in place that carries enough potential to make an impression outside the theatrical run as well. MUSIC Thankfully it is a good beginning for  Aarakshan  with ' Achha Lagta Hai ' turning out to be a catchy melodious outing. The kind of track that manages to make an instant impression due to the intrinsic simplicity that it carries, ' Achha Lagta Hai ' also boasts of good lyrics by Prasoon Joshi who amalgamates poetry for Saif's character while making Deepika's portions more jovial and straight-to-the-point, a

Bodyguard Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS  It's the wave factor. When the going is good, everything starts seeming great. And when the packaging is right, you expect the end product to be excellent. You want things to work. Period. And this is where the core strength of 'Bodyguard' lies. With  Ready ,  Dabangg  and  Wanted behind him, Salman is having everything going his way. So when he ropes in Himesh Reshammiya to compose music for the film and has Kareena Kapoor for company, you brace yourself to listen to a chartbuster soundtrack. Add to that Katrina Kaif's presence for an item number and you know that this album will certainly get a 'huge opening'! MUSIC It is a Rajnikanth beginning for the album with the title song ' Bodyguard ' composed, written and sung in the same way as the Superstar is introduced in his movies down South (save a  Robot  which didn't start on a characteristic note). Nevertheless, this Shabbir Ahmed written track has chartbuster written all over

Gandhi To Hitler Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS When it comes to the soundtrack of the film, one doesn't expect anything whatsoever from  Gandhi To Hitler  which has seen minimal promotion coming it's way. Though there is a new composing (Arbind- Lyton) and writing (Dr. Pallavi Mishra) team at the helm of affairs,  Gandhi To Hitler  doesn't quite make one get excited to check out what's in store here. MUSIC What stays constant throughout the album is a voiceover by Ranjan Arneja which is as old fashioned as Doordarshan where a similar voice introduced every episode of Mahabharata. Nevertheless the songs that follow aren't exciting either with Jagjit Singh getting his characteristic sad mood in place with ' Har Ore Tabaahi Ka Manzar ' that details the after effects of war that leave thousands dead. A depressing way to start the album, it also comes again towards the end, this time with newcomer Shoureen coming behind the mike.  On the same lines as ' Kadam Kadam Badhaaye Ja '

Gandhi To Hitler Hindi Movie Review

Image
Years after his death, Adolf Hitler has been kept alive and breathing by movie makers across the globe. Many a film-maker has made a film on the German leader, who was responsible for World War II. In fact, the Second World War and Hitler have been fascinating subjects through the decades, with a number of international projects depicting the atrocities committed by the dictator. Though there have been many films on Mahatma Gandhi, including the Academy Award winning GANDHI, GANDHI TO HITLER is the first Hindi film that attempts to tell the story of the Nazi leader on celluloid.
