RIM details BlackBerry service failures

Image
Earlier today, we reported that RIM apologized for the BlackBerry service outage experienced by users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and other parts of the world. And now, although many are still without service, the company has issued a statement with a more detailed response as to what caused the issue. The service first went down yesterday in the early morning, flooding Twitter and other social networks with plenty of complaints from angry users who could no longer access emails and BlackBerry Messenger on their devices. RIM has been apologetic from the start, but has so far only explained that they’re working on the problem. The new statement from RIM details that the downtime was caused by a core switch failure, which was supposed to failover to a back-up switch. Apparently, neither one worked as previously tested and the outage is now going on two days. The issue caused a backlog of data that RIM is still clearing out and the company has not given a timeline as to when t

Motorola XOOM 2 and Spyder leaked photos appear

Image
When a leaked set of photos of a device, or in this case two devices: the Motorola Spyder (aka DROID RAZR) and XOOM 2, are released with carrier logos splayed across them, it generally means that release time is near. We’ve learned this year that this isn’t always true, but on the whole we can judge a leak by its cover. Here what we’re seeing is a brand new handset and a second-generation tablet on the way straight out of the generally-ok photo takers hands. Motorola, will you bring the heat inside 2011? The XOOM 2 here is in its 8.2-inch form, looking pretty sassy with a big white ring of grip around the back panel. It’s got a camera up along the short end of the back of the device as well, plus a portrait-angled Motorola M so you know which way they intend for you to hold it. From what we’ve seen of Honeycomb, portrait mode isn’t exactly its strong point. Could this tablet be made specifically for Ice Cream Sandwich? Think about it! Then there’s the Motorola Spyder, looking rathe

Zynga Project Z announced, independent site for games galore

Image
This week social gaming giant Zynga has announced its intent to go solo in more ways than one. First, a reminder that Zynga will be offered publicly soon (stock up!), next, a new announcement about Project Z, a new website where the Zynga environment will be hosted. As of now, Zynga is dependent on platforms such as Facebook and apps on mobile operating systems as their main source of gaming users. What Project Z will be is no less than a fully functional independent webpage that includes social networking and the full collection of Zynga games. Should their current hosts be worried? Facebook and the rest of the current set of Zynga partners should rest assured that there’s nothing to fear, says Zynga in a regulatory filing, “any deterioration in our relationship with Facebook would harm our business.” On the other hand, the group has also noted that Facebook limiting access to game developers, modification of terms and services, favorable treatment toward Zynga’s rivals, and Faceboo

Siri assistant on iPhone 4S gets real world demo

Image
Apple is promising a revolutionary voice-control experience with the native Siri personal assistant feature for iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S. We’ve seen Siri demoed at the Let’s Talk iPhone event last week along with a slick commercial preview of the feature in action, but now we’ve got a new video from Stuff.TV that shows it functioning impressively well in the real world. Despite plenty of background noise, Siri works as intended, opening up websites, sending emails and text messages, checking the weather, setting up wake-up times for the alarm clock, and doing currency conversions all via simple voice commands. And these commands aren’t robotic ‘yes’ and ‘no’ or single word commands you might be used to with automated answering services, instead these are natural-sounding sentences. Siri also didn’t seem to have a problem understanding various accents, as the folks in some parts of the video were British. Instead of the standard American female voice, Siri seemed to automatically swit

Twitter 3.5 for iOS 5 brings enhanced sign up and photo sharing

Image
Twitter released an update to its iOS app that brings some improvements tailored for iOS 5 as well as some specific features optimized for the iPad. Taking advantage of the native integration of Twitter with iOS 5, the new app now features an enhanced sign up experience that makes it easier to access your account for the first time. This update also brings Twitter’s official photo sharing feature to the iOS app for the first time. This feature lets users share photos directly through Twitter, which has partnered with Photobucket to power the image hosting. Although Twitter’s photo sharing becomes default, users can still change the settings to use third-party photo sharing options like TwitPic. Specific improvements for Twitter on the iPad, include a new Direct Message interface that now shows threaded conversations in chronological order. The updated app also lets you touch a location on the screen to see nearby tweets. All the new features should work on previous version of iOS,

Adobe Photoshop image deblur tool blows minds [Video]

Image
Adobe has demonstrated a photo deblurring tool that can analyze exactly how a shaky camera was held and then correct that in an image, even making tiny text legible. Tipped for inclusion in a future version of Photoshop, and demo’d at Adobe MAX 2011 last week, the tool was caught on camera by Peter Elst as it wowed developers. The system creates a motion trajectory of the camera for the time that the shutter was open, analyzing the exact movements involved. From that – and some other unspecified parameters loaded in the background, which we’re guessing will play a pretty significant role as well – the app can backtrack through the blurring and create a sharper, corrected copy. The system doesn’t need to work from the original RAW file from your camera, and is shown fixing a low-res image pulled from online. As for when we might expected to see the tool show up in Photoshop, sneak peeks like these “may or may not appear in a future version, we won’t commit to timing” an Adobe exec c

Navigon GPS app hits Windows Phone 7.5 Mango

Image
Navigon launched today its mobile turn-by-turn GPS navigation app for the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango platform. Similar to the way it functions on iOS and Android, the app stores maps on your phone so that it can work even when you lose data connection or cell coverage. The Navigon GPS app for Windows Phone 7.5 Mango will offer several advanced navigation features, including spoken turn-by-turn directions with text-to-speech, live traffic information and visual lane guidance with Lane Assistant Pro, and rerouting options of up to three different routes depending on driving style with MyRoutes. Additionally, the app features an augmented reality function called Reality Scanner that lets you easily identify nearby landmarks while on foot. It also offers real-time traffic alerts, speed warnings, camera warnings, photo-realistic views of exits, and Google Local Search for POI searches. The app is available now via the Windows Marketplace, but it’s compatible only with the latest Windows

iPhone 4S benchmarks 73% faster than iPhone 4

Image
The iPhone 4S won’t be shipping until October 14, but performance scores for the device have already begun to surface. Following reports this morning that a lucky customer received his iPhone 4S early in Germany, there have been a separate leak of Geekbench scores for the device that reveal a 73 percent faster performance than the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S sports a new dual-core A5 processor clocked at 800MHz, which is slightly slower than the 1GHz clock speed of the A5 processor in the iPad 2. However, the decrease doesn’t impact the performance as much as it increases the battery life. In overall results, the Geekbench metrics show that the iPhone 4S scored a 623, which is a bit behind the iPad 2′s score of 751, but way ahead of the iPhone 4′s score of 360. In graphics processing, the iPhone 4S scored 122.7, while the iPhone 4 scored only 15.3. The results also reveal that the iPhone 4S beats several major Android competitors, including the Samsung Galaxy S II, the LG Optimus 3D,

Nexus Prime name and release leaked by Samsung

Image
This week in the UK the Samsung Galaxy S II was awarded Phone of the Year by T3, and there the person accepting the award, UK Samsung Sales Director Andrew Glass, let loose the official name for the next Google hero phone: Nexus Prime. This normally wouldn’t be such a big deal for a smartphone, but when it comes to it being the platform of choice for google’s next big Android update Ice Cream Sandwich, we’ve just gotta know! So thusly there it is, Nexus Prime, and according the Glass again, we’ll be seeing it SOON. Expected sometime inside the next two to three weeks, we’d originally expected to see this device today at CTIA in California. What happened instead was a delay reportedly due to the passing of legendary competitor Steve Jobs. In good taste it seems, Google and Samsung pushed the release date back a bit so as not to clash with the memorial services. Today we find that we DO get at least one detail on the upcoming superphone: a name. Here’s what Glass said, his words exactl

ASUS Zenbook UX21 hands-on [Update: UX31 too]

Image
ASUS has boarded the ultrabook bandwagon, and it’s picked an impressive machine to show its hand. The ASUS Zenbook UX21 may not be branded an ultrabook, but it’s just as much one of the new Intel breed of ultrabooks – and a MacBook Air rival – as Acer’s, Toshiba’s, Lenovo’s and the rest. We’ve grabbed some hands-on time at ASUS’ London launch event; check out our first-impressions after the cut. It’s particularly hard to escape the MacBook Air comparisons with the UX21; let’s be generous and call it half-homage, half-necessity based on fitting an acceptable amount of connectivity into a slimline form-factor. Just 3mm at the front (flaring to 17mm at the back) and 1.1kg in weight, it’s not quite as thin as the 1.08kg 11.8-inch Air, and it has an 11.4-inch display running at 1366 x 768 so is slightly smaller. ASUS also has a Zenbook UX31 with a larger, 13.3-inch display running at 1600 x 900. The aluminum construction is solid and the hinge – always a worry with these slimline machin

iTunes 10.5 with iCloud available for download now

Image
Today we get our first glimpse of iCloud in action via iTunes 10.5, released one day ahead of the Wednesday launch of both iOS 5 and iCloud itself. This update to iTunes gives you features such as iTunes in the Cloud and wireless syncing of your iDevices via Wi-fi, and it’s available for download for both Mac and Windows PC computers today. The whole shebang drops this week, day by day, and we’ll all be living in the cloud by the end of the month! To download the newest version of iTunes, you’ve only to head over to the Apple support page for iTunes and snatch it up. Download, update, and win. There you’ll find a few updates, but they’re all life-changing if your live revolves around Apple’s media empire. First, you can re-download music you’ve previously purchased on any machine you’ve signed in on. The same is true of TV, movies, and books – in fact, I just downloaded a Ratatat song on my iPad 2 that I purchased several months ago – it was just THERE, how convenient! Multiple dow

TiVo Premiere Elite set-top box now available

Image
This week the fine folks at TiVo have today announced availability of their new TiVo Premiere Elite set-top box. This box will be the company’s first and only retail DVR with a full four tuners allowing users to record four channels at once, all while viewing a fifth recorded program. Never ever miss any TV show again, ever! You’ll also have a gigantic 2-terabyte hard drive, this allowing you to record “up to 200 hours” of HD programming, two times the recording space that any other current comparable solution offers. You won’t be able to use this new Elite system with analog cables or over-the-air antenna, such is the nature of this digital cable system ONLY solution. This device is a THX Certified DVR, and it maintains TiVo’s “gold-standard,” user interface, Neflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube. The TiVo Premiere Elite outputs to HDMI, component video, composite video, optical audio, and analog audio. Video outputs range from 480i to 1080p, and you’ll be

Galaxy S III leaked via Samsung evolution chart

Image
What you’re about to see is a chart reportedly leaked from a Samsung internal presentation that shows off a 2012 release by the name of Galaxy S III. For those of you still reeling from the recent release of the USA editions of the Galaxy S II, (with T-Mobile’s coming out this week), you might think – how could they release the next generation so soon? Well, ladies and gentlemen, because the Galaxy S II has been out internationally since early this year and by all means, it’s time to refresh! Technology in the mobile sector is moving so fast that you’re device is outdated by the time you turn it on, and Samsung’s right here on the cuff. Let’s have a look! While you might feel like the device in the upper right-hand corner of the presentation slide above looks awfully like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (aka Nexus Prime) we saw in a video last week, you’d be totally wrong! Or it could be that they’re one in the same device, OR it could be that Samsung will produce one, modify it, and releas

Nissan 10-minute electric car charger revealed

Image
Batteries are always a point of contention when it comes to the reviewing of mobile devices, and with the electric car revolution slowly… approaching… mainstream, we’ve got to start considering how fast those batteries are able to be pumped up. Of course it has to do with the charger itself, when it comes down to it, with the common charger taking up to eight hours currently – Nissan looks to alleviate that silly time waster with a brand new 10-minutes-flat wait time with their charger that’ll knock the socks off of the future. Time to go electric, everyone? Nissan and Japan’s Kansai University have announced that they’ve been working on the technology to make it possible to charge the batteries needed to run cars like the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi iMiEV in 10-minutes, this of course MUCH faster than the fastest charger at the moment. This ability to charge so quickly comes via changing the electrode inside a capacitor from carbon to tungsten oxide and vanadium oxide to improve

Verizon 4G LTE turned on for 35 new cities by end of November

Image
This week Verizon has announced a new wave of 4G LTE expansions and activations including one set on October 20th and another on November 17th, these together combining to one again solidify the USA’s largest carrier as also the nation’s “most reliable” 4G network. What we’ve got here is LTE activation in 22 new cities and network expansion in four cities on Oct. 20, then LTE activation in 13 cities and network expansion in five cities on Nov. 17, this making Verizon’s LTE total at 178 cities active in their 4G network by December. Verizon devices enabled with LTE connectivity have been coming out of the woodwork as of late, with superstars still shining through – a couple of weeks ago, in fact, your humble narrator witnessed what could only be called a crushing blow of advertisements in New York City showing off the DROID Charge, this leading up to the DROID BIONIC and of course their strange and inexpensively priced cousin, the Pantech Breakout. All of these devices run on LTE for

iPhone price cuts refuel sales momentum says analyst

Image
Apple’s iPhone 4S pre-order sales success isn’t the only reason the company’s cash registers are ringing. Price cuts of the existing iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS have apparently reignited demand for the older handsets, AppleInsider reports, with Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley claiming his checks across US carriers showed buoyant sales of the legacy devices. That’s even with the promise of the iPhone 4S to tempt them away to the higher-priced model. As well as the new, dual-core phone, Apple announced that the iPhone 4 would be sold at $99 – with a new agreement – for an 8GB version, while an 8GB iPhone 3GS would be offered free. Walkley didn’t go so far as to share hard figures, so it’s difficult to know exactly how much of a difference the price cut will have made. However, with the promise of iOS 5 later this week for those with the existing devices, it’s entirely possible shoppers on a budget may have decided the updated software and last year’s hardware (or the year be

Nokia 800 Windows Phone adverts leak

Image
Promotional material for one of Nokia’s first Windows Phone handsets has leaked, suggesting the smartphone currently known as the “Searay” will launch as the Nokia 800. According to the advert, leaked to Pocketnow, the Nokia N9 lookalike will have an 8-megapixel camera and is being billed as a speedy, everyday companion device. “Today the sun will rise and set. The rest is up for grabs” one promo reads, emphasizing the tile layout of the Metro UI. “Take, tag, sort and share. All in a flash” continues the second, pointing out that users can “Jst click the button on side of the new Nokia 800 and an 8MP photo can be easily tagged, shared with your groups or social networks and sorted into an album in seconds.” They, it has to be said, are Windows Phone features rather than Nokia-specific functionality, though we’re still expecting the Finnish company to pull out at least a little differentiation with its new range. Three phones running Windows Phone are tipped to be unveiled at Nokia

BlackBerry services go offline as servers fail

Image
RIM’s BlackBerry handsets have been left cut off from the web, email and BBM after an apparent server crash took phones in Europe, the Middle East and Africa offline. The fault began at roughly 11am today, and according to the BBC is being attributed to a datacenter in Slough, UK, responsible for the regions affected. RIM UK has said that it is “investigating” the problem, though has issued no timescale for fixing it. In the meantime, BlackBerry owners have nothing but RIM’s apologies to keep them comforted, rather than the regular buzz of emails dropping into their inbox and instant messaging conversations distracting them from the office or schoolroom. Text message remains functional at this stage, and carriers are blaming the Canadian company: both Bahrain operator Batelco and Vodafone Egypt have pointed the finger at RIM’s servers, The Telegraph reports. The timing of the outage is less than fortunate, with Apple’s iOS 5 update fast approaching. That will bring iMessage to the

Nokia tune goes Dubstep with prize-winning remix

Image
Nokia has revealed the winner of its Nokia Tune contest, the company’s search for a 21st century update to the classic “diddle-uh-duh” jingle familiar from millions of handsets, and it’s quite the departure. The handiwork of 22 year old Italian sound designer Valerio Alessandro Sizzi, the Nokia Tune Dubstep Edition will show up alongside the default ringtone on 100m Nokia devices in 2012. “I made a dubstep version of the Nokia Tune. Dubstep has become massively popular during the last two years (even if its roots are definitely older) between the “hipsters” from all over the world and the production of a dubstep track is something really challenging, as a producer. I just thought as a sound designer that a sparkling, up-to-date and with a certain coolness version of the Nokia Tune would have been perfect to attract young and “cool-hunting” customers. I just thought: if you want to give the fresHest product to a costumer, you better make it “sound” as freshest as you can, also!” Valer
