Use the tradeoff matrix to foster collaboration in agile projects

The tradeoff matrix requires the project team to categorize the constraints (resources, schedule, features) as fixed, chosen, or adjustable. Learn abouts the benefits of using the tradeoff matrix in agile projects. ———————————————————————————————- While making prudent project compromises and tradeoffs is a critical success factor in any project, in agile projects, there are certain factors that make it more challenging and more crucial. Linear projects In a typical linear or waterfall project, the requirements definition process is a distinct and front-loaded exercise, and much of the negotiation over features to be included is done up-front. In fact, this early scope definition process, with all feature determinations and “horse-trading” done before any design or development begins, is the defining feature of a traditional project approach. Anyone who has ever worked on a traditional project knows that new features and ideas will arise during the design and development phase, no ma

Parliamentary panel wants stricter penalty for Afridi

Image
Pakistan's parliamentary sports committee wants Shahid Afridi to be punished further for tampering with the ball during the fifth ODI against Australia in Perth last month. The committee told the PCB that Afridi, who is serving a ban of two Twenty20 internationals, had maligned the country's reputation and such an offence warranted a harsher penalty. "If he [Afridi] bites the ball like an apple, there are lots of problems behind it," Senator Haroon Akhtar told PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. "If you don't take action this will happen again. The team lacks discipline and you got to rectify the problem." Afridi was caught by TV cameras biting the ball on a couple of occasions. This was reported by the TV umpire to the on-field umpires who, after a chat with Afridi, changed the ball. Afridi pleaded guilty to the charge at a hearing with the match referee Ranjan Madugalle immediately after the game. He apologised and regretted his action and was banned for t

Blunders at Eden Gardens

Image
A blunder storm Bat went first, thrown to the ground. Helmet was got rid of next, then the right glove, followed by the left as Virender Sewhag stood there, bewildered: watching the big screen. He had punched Wayne Parnell behind square, ran the first run hard and turned for the second. Gautam Gambhir, his partner, responded positively but Sehwag abruptly stopped, leaving Gambhir helpless and red faced. It was a gross blunder, and all Sehwag's fault. Standing alone at far end of the pitch, Sehwag arched back, sighed in anger at his folly. At least he made up with a superb century. AB takes the punches Wicketkeeping is no easy job, especially when the ball comes at you at speeds between 85 and 90-plus mph. Even AB de Villiers, who has kept wickets on many occasions for South Africa, had to sustain some hard knocks and remained jittery behind the stumps throughout the day. His biggest blunder, though, came after tea when he missed a stumping of Virender Sewhag, who, on 129, stepp

Malik and Yousuf should be 'kicked out' - Nazar

Image
Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has said Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik deserved to be "kicked out of the team" in the wake of their comments to the media following their forgettable tour of Australia. Nazar said the two senior players - who already have a fractious history - should never have gone public about the turbulent dressing-room atmosphere and suggest that that their own relationship had turned sour again. Yousuf, who took over as captain for the tours of New Zealand and Australia, told a television channel that one player was responsible for disrupting the team unity on tour but stopped short of naming the player, preferring to reveal it to the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. Malik, the former captain, widely regarded as the target of Yousuf's remarks, hit back by questioning Yousuf's leadership abilities. This occurred after the team was whitewashed in all matches against Australia. "The Yousuf and Malik feud has been simmering for a wh

New Zealand eyeing at least 400, says Ingram

Image
The New Zealand batsman Peter Ingram , who marked his debut with a brisk 42, believes the home side can cross 400. An unbeaten 100-run association between Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum enabled New Zealand to overcome a tough position and finish the first day on top. "We'll be looking for 400-450," he said. "The boys will be going out there doing their routines and processes the best they can to try and achieve that. There's a positive feeling in the camp. We talked about more guys needing to go on. Hopefully the boys do that tomorrow and put Bangladesh under pressure." Ingram, 31, found himself at the crease in the sixth over after Shafiul Islam picked up Tim McIntosh. He began confidently with a series of boundaries before his dismissal - a loose pull shot to mid-on - left New Zealand 66 for 3. They became 126 for 4 when the impressive Rubel Hossain picked up his third wicket, Ross Taylor. "I'm happy with the way I played until the shot

Yorkshire post record profit

Yorkshire have announced a record pre-tax profit of almost £700,000 for the financial year. At a time of uncertainty in both English domestic cricket, with the Champions League Twenty20 threatening to clash with the end of next season, and the wider UK economy, it marks the fourth consecutive year that Yorkshire have made a profit. The fourth Ashes Test in 2009, held at Headingley, delivered the bulk of the profits but Yorkshire did achieve growth in other income areas such as a 13% increase in commercial revenue and a 22% rise in subscriptions. It amounted to a record turnover of £8.4 million and a 90% increase in surplus on the same period last year. Stewart Regan, the Yorkshire chief executive, said: "The last 12 months have seen the busiest period of activity since I joined the club some four years ago. "We have held two major international cricket events, including the fourth Ashes Test, we have commenced construction of the Carnegie Pavilion in partnership wit

Charlotte Edwards eyes history in India

Image
Charlotte Edwards believes she is leading the best England squad ever and is confident the ODI and Twenty20 champions can make history on their limited-overs tour of India. England have yet to win in India but Edwards, along with head coach Mark Lane, put faith in the squad despite the absence of two key players while also keeping in mind the ICC World Twenty20 in May. "We were here for a ten-day camp last year and we do have an idea about the conditions and we have prepared well," said Edwards at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. "India always tends to play better at home and we are all excited to face this challenge. It was snowing back home and out here it is warm but I think this is the best prepared England team ever though we will miss two key players in Claire Taylor and Holly Colvin." England, who in 2009 won the World Cup, the Twenty20 World Cup, retained the Ashes and defeated Australia 4-0 in the NatWest series, will be playing five one-dayers an

Watson wins Allan Border Medal

Image
Shane Watson has completed his rise in importance to Australia in all three formats by being named the Allan Border Medallist for 2010. In a year in which Watson established himself as a Test opening batsman while remaining a key top-order man in the limited-overs game, he finished with 125 votes and beat the second-placed Michael Clarke (90), while Mitchell Johnson came third with 87 votes. Watson was also named Australia's One-Day International Player of the Year and his five-day opening partner Simon Katich took out the Test title. The recognition of his peers, media and umpires as Australia's best player over the past 12 months was a major landmark for Watson, who had previously battled injuries for nearly a decade and struggled to become a full-time member of Australia's team. A clearly emotional Watson teared up as he accepted the prize and he made special mention of the work put in by Cricket Australia's medical staff, who have helped him recover from injuries

Klinger and Hastings take out awards

Image
Michael Klinger and John Hastings , two players who switched states to gain greater opportunities, have been rewarded for their post-move success at the Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne. The South Australia batsman Klinger was named the State Cricketer of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Hastings received the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award having established himself as a key man in Victoria's line-up. Klinger scored 36 votes and beat the Victoria pair of Chris Rogers (29) and Brad Hodge (27) for the state title. During the voting period, which ran from December 24, 2008 to February 1, 2010, Klinger scored 1532 runs at 56.74 across all formats. He was the leading Sheffield Shield run scorer last season and is again near the top this summer . The two consecutive prizes for Klinger have justified his decision to leave Victoria during the 2008 off-season, at which time he had made 1569 first-class runs at 27.05. His tally is now 3504 runs at 41

Nooshin Al Khadeer recalled for first two ODIs

The offspinner Nooshin Al Khadeer has been recalled to Indian squad for the first two matches of the one-day series against England starting February 19 in Bangalore. Jhulan Goswami will lead the side, and Amita Chopra, like in the 2009 World Cup, will be her deputy. Al Khadeer, a former No. 1 ranked international bowler, was not part of the World Cup in Australia or India's squad for the World Twenty20 in England last June. From the squad that played the World Cup - which was India's last one-day assignment - the notable absentees are Reema Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik, and Snehal Pradhan. England, the world champions and World Twenty20 champions, will be playing five one-dayers and three Twenty20 matches. The tour will open with a warm-up match against Board President's XI in Bangalore on February 17. The city will also host the first two ODIs on February 19 and 21. The next two matches have been scheduled for February 24 and 26 in Visakapatnam, with Mumbai's MIG s

Hussey lifts leaders Victoria further ahead

Image
Victoria's captain David Hussey extended his team's lead at the top of the Sheffield Shield table to eight points after guiding the Bushrangers to a six-wicket win over New South Wales at the MCG. Steven Smith's second first-class century helped the Blues reach 387 but they lost their wickets too quickly on the final day, which gave Victoria plenty of time to chase 195. Trent Copeland did his best to restrict the hosts and had Nick Jewell lbw for 2 and Aaron Finch also trapped in front for 26, before Hussey and Lloyd Mash steadied the Bushrangers. It was an important innings for Mash, who has been given the chance to replace Brad Hodge in the first-class line-up but this season had scored 14, 8, 0, 2 and 6. He finished with a handy 40 before edging Josh Hazlewood to slip just after tea, and Hussey (79) and McDonald, who made 39 not out, got them close to the line. The winning runs came via a six from Matthew Wade, who came to the crease for two balls only and cleared the

Jamaica and CCC set up tense final day

The final day at the Guyana National Stadium promises to be gripping after tournament leaders Jamaica and Combined Campuses & Colleges played out an engaging third day. From 37 for 2 Jamaica crashed to 164 to leave CCC a target of 206; by stumps they were 91 runs away at 115 for 4. Kavesh Kantasingh's four wickets did most of the damage for Jamaica, who were indebted to Donovan Pagon's second half-century of the match. Three wickets down the order to the legspinner Gavin Wallace further dented Jamaica, who failed to cash in on a first-innings lead of 41. CCC's openers Omar Phillips and Jamal Smith put on 62 before Tamar Lambert, Jamaica's captain, picked up 3 for 18 from 16 overs. The match remained interestingly poised with CC captain Floyd Reifer's presence on 25. Omari Banks continued to be the main player for Leeward Islands against Windward Islands at the Bourda . After snaring a career-best seven-wicket haul on day two, Banks hit a half-century to

Jadeja sought approval from BCCI - reports

Image
Ravindra Jadeja , the Indian allrounder who was banned from the IPL 2010 season for allegedly trying to negotiate a contract outside of Rajasthan Royals, has said he sought prior approval from the BCCI before taking his decision, the Times of India reported. In his letter to the BCCI, reportedly written two weeks before Saturday's ban, Jadeja said his contract with Rajasthan had expired on December 31, 2009 and that they did not give him any indications they were going to renew his contract. "It is my understanding that my contract with Rajasthan Royals has expired and they have not at any stage offered me a renewal for Season 2010," Jadeja said in the letter. "In addition, I have never refused until this day to sign such a contract. Hence, I believe I am free to sign a contract with any franchisee. The deadline for announcing the squads was February 12, and it passed without Jadeja signing a fresh contract. "If there is any delay on my part, I regret

Sehwag and Tendulkar drive India ahead

Image
The Sehwag storm struck South Africa with full force and pretty much blew everything in its way to a 13th 150-plus score. Amid the mayhem, it was easy to forget the cool, pleasant breeze that was Sachin Tendulkar's 92nd international century - his fourth in four Tests. They added 249 runs for the third wicket and kept South Africa wicketless for 57.4 overs but, once the two quietened, South Africa struck back with three quick wickets to retrieve some of the momentum in the match. Sehwag rattled them with a vicious assault on the new ball, put behind him the Gautam Gambhir run-out and, after a brief quiet, punished them some more. His 87-ball hundred would have been even faster but for a relative lull of 10 off 21 balls. Tendulkar enjoyed playing in the shadow of Sehwag's strike-rate, kept scoring at an even pace and, unlike Sehwag, didn't give South Africa a single chance. Two critical moments in the first session determined the flow of the game. Sehwag - 43 off 21 then

Gayle, Strauss, Sehwag in contention

The countdown to the ESPNCricinfo Awards begins, with Ashes hundreds from Andrew Strauss, Jonathan Trott, Virender Sehwag's thrill-a-ball 293 against Sri Lanka, Chris Gayle's mature and match-saving 165 against Australia and Umar Akmal's hundred on debut making up the final contenders for the Best Test Batting performance of 2009. The top five were drawn on basis of votes from a 14-member jury that includes some of the leading cricket experts in the world and Cricinfo's senior editors. Strauss's 161 on day one of the Lord's Test last summer, Trott's century on debut in the Ashes decider at The Oval, Sehwag's 293 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Gayle's unbeaten 165* against Australia, and Akmal's 129 in Dunedin in his first Test innings edged out major innings from Ramnaresh Sarwan, Phillip Hughes, Daniel Vettori, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammad Yousuf, Fawad Alam, and Rahul Dravid. A departure from the usual year-end awards looking at overall

Poll results: Hello Windows 7 and goodbye Windows XP

Image
In December 2009, I published a blog post ( Hello Windows 7 and goodbye Windows XP? ) asking TechRepublic members what they were thinking regarding Microsoft Windows 7 and the potential for migrating from Windows XP. The results indicate that, despite the general acceptance of Windows 7 as a viable operating system, most enterprises were still waiting for a catalyst to drive the upgrade process. Whatever else you can say about Windows XP, it has to be conceded that this venerable operating system has staying power. Take a look at the results and see where you fit in with your IT peers. Are you out in front of the curve this time? Now that you have seen and tested Windows 7, are you more likely to deploy it in your organization? How to Share Copy or Delete Multiple Photos in Apple iPhone at once

Image
I have taken more than 500 Snaps using my Apple iPhone, but the only problem i have always faced is the deletion of Images i don’t need anymore. One option to delete all these Photos is to Sync the iPhone with the computer and transfer all the Photos to the computer and then deleting them using the PC option of ‘Copy & Delete all’ but this would just delete of all the Photos in one go without giving me a option to select and delete. Hence the need for a option in the Apple iPhone was very much required and this was always available, as a secret option or may be a ignored option which should have been searched and implemented long back. Here is the process for the same which am currently using on my iPhone to perform multiple tasks at the same time ie Sharing, Copying Photos and then Deleting them based on personal choice. In order to get started you need to first tap on the Photos section on your Apple iPhone main screen and enter the gallery view section where all the photos are s

Ronnie Wood 'spends secret night with ex'

Rolling Stone star Ronnie Wood and his former flame have sparked reports of reunion after the two were seen kissing at her doorstep. The 62-year-old guitarist was later spotted sneaking into 21-year-old Katia Ivanova's apartment where he apparently stayed till 3am. Wood, who broke his marriage with Jo over Katia, with whom he later split, was said to have pleaded her to give him another chance. "Ronnie seemed nervous. He didn't want to be spotted. Kat had a big grin on her face and looked pleased to see him," News of the World quoted an onlooker as saying. A source added: "This is astonishing. She went to hell and back during the final months of their relationship. She tried to kill herself and now she is inviting him into her life again."

Pollard begins to cash in

Image
Kieron Pollard has become one of West Indies' main money men without proving his value in the international arena. Pollard's wealth, including a US$750,000 fee for the IPL, has come from his brutal exploits at domestic Twenty20 level and until the fourth ODI in Brisbane on Sunday he had not scored a half-century at that level. The game was lost when Pollard arrived but he showed enough in his 62 from 55 balls that Chris Gayle believes the allrounder can become a heavy run-scorer for the side. "I'm still happy with Pollard and the progress he's making," Gayle said. "It's a big improvement in the last couple of ODIs. It shows that he's very capable of getting an ODI hundred very soon." It's more like a medium-range prediction for a 22-year-old who averages 17 in his 19 ODIs and is best suited to launching balls into the stands. Pollard took out some frustrating at his side's cause in Brisbane - and the strange-paced performance

Guptill, McCullum resist spirited Bangladesh

Image
An unbroken 100-run partnership between Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum helped New Zealand stage a comeback on the first day in the one off Test at Seddon Park. The pair combined with the home side struggling at 158 for 5, but batted with assurance till stumps to rescue them from a dodgy position. New Zealand were pushed to a corner by the Bangladesh seamers who made good use of a green, seaming wicket after a rain-delayed start. Shafiul Islam bowled an immaculate line and length throughout his first spell, beating the bats of both New Zealand openers repeatedly before getting one to seam slightly away from Tim McIntosh who edged to Imrul Kayes at second slip. Rubel Hossain then took over, bowling at a lively pace and finding consistency in the afternoon session to trouble the New Zealand top order with a barrage of short-pitched deliveries. He was the pick of the visiting bowlers, ending with 3 for 86. After accounting for opener BJ Watling, Rubel added the scalps of debutant

Watson hot tip for top prize

Image
Shane Watson is the favourite among his team-mates for the Allan Border Medal after a spectacular home summer. Watson didn't join the Test side until the middle of the Ashes series, but it hasn't stopped Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey from tipping him for Australia's prestigious prize at tonight's ceremony in Melbourne. Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson, who would become the third bowler to win in the 11 years of the award, are the other major contenders. "If you read the paper Watto can't be beaten and is a $1.30 favourite," Ponting, who shared the honour with Clarke last year, said. "I thought it would be Watto, Pup or Mitch." Watson has been strong since his return to the Test team in Edgbaston and has also contributed heavily in the one-day team, while Clarke has been consistent and Johnson has had patches of brilliance sprinkled with deep troughs. "For me, Shane Watson is the favourite," Hussey said. "He's only play

Rhinos and Rocks draw level cricket

A fine team performance by Mid West Rhinos brought them a well-earned eight-wicket victory over the powerful Mashonaland Eagles in the third round of matches at Harare Sports Club . As usual, Elton Chigumbura shone for the home team with a swashbuckling half-century, but none of his team-mates came through with significant performances, and the Rhinos found several players whose combined efforts brought them success. Eagles, put in to bat, attacked the bowling with reckless abandon, and in retrospect this probably cost them the match. Doug Marillier looked in good form, but was run out through the frozen immobility of his partner, Forster Mutizwa, who hit a six and was then himself run out by a brilliant throw from Vusi Sibanda as Eagles slipped to 33 for 4. As he has done so often this season, Chigumbura rallied his side after the early setbacks shared a 57-run partnership of calm and steady batting with Greg Lamb before Lamb skied a catch to long off. Chigumbura reached his 5

Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati reveals ex's betrayal

Actress Shobna Gulati has bared her heartache after her former lover cheated on her with three other women. The Coronation Street star revealed she learnt about his infidelity after reading the raunchy text messages to other girls on his mobile. "I saw three names and they all began with 'S'. They were Asian names and all the girls worked in our industry. I couldn't believe it. The texts were about how lovely they were and how great their sex life was. I threw his mobile and everything at him. I was shouting and crying," the News of the World quoted her as saying. She added: "It was very harrowing to discover his infidelity. I'd fallen in love with him but he was such an adept liar." Now happily single, the Brit said: "I'd like the sexual excitement of a relationship. But I'm not sure if meeting someone is a real desire anymore."

Plagued by problems, 'Baa Bahu Aur Baby' goes off air

'Baa Bahu Aur Baby', one of the most loved family dramas on STAR Plus, is going off air. J.D. Majethia, one of the producers of the show, says they are ending it because the Season 2 didn't perform as per expectations. 'Firstly, we had a contract for only six months for the season two and secondly 'Baa Bahu Aur Baby' Season 2 didn't perform as per expectations,' said Majethia. The last episode will be aired Feb 21. 'The show timings were also constantly changed and it was shifted to late night slot, but still the serial had best TRPs at that slot. Low TRPs are said to be a reason for the shut down but the actual reason can be given only by STAR Plus,' he said. A Hats Off Productions presentation, 'Baa Bahu Aur Baby' has been co-produced by Majethia and Aatish Kapadia and the first season ran for four years - from August 2005 to March 2009. With Sarita Joshi as the head of the family called Godavari Thakkar, it showed the

James Bond fans to name new 007 blockbuster

James Bond fans are being urged to suggest the title of the 23rd blockbuster 007 film, scheduled to hit cinemas next year. Bosses at MGM have admitted that they are running out of names based on the best-selling novels of Ian Fleming. However, fans are lobbying studio executives to choose between the names of two Fleming short stories with box office appeal. And they've also come up with their own promo posters to show how good they'd look. One army of 007 fanatics is promoting Risico, originally written as part of the For Your Eyes Only novelettes. It sees Bond being sent by M to investigate a drug-smuggling operation based in Italy that is flooding Britain with narcotics. A rival group wants the next film to be called The Property Of A Lady, another Fleming short story that sees Bond on the trail of a gorgeous Russian double agent who has infiltrated our Secret Service. A senior MGM executive said that director Sam Mendes has been 'blown away' by

Simon Cowell girlfriend's boob-grope snap angers Afghans

Simon Cowell's new girlfriend has enraged her fellow Afghans with a picture that shows her boobs being groped by a gay singing star. In the pic, American Idol make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy, 36, can be seen grabbed by singer Clay Aiken, reports the Daily Star. The shot is nothing more than a studio prank as Aiken, 31, is openly gay and a pal of Simon Cowell. However, Mezhgan is facing threats and abuse since they were posted on the website Afghan Buzz. Now, it is feared she may be targeted by Muslim fanatics. Scores of angry bloggers besieged the website with hate messages. One, using the name Amiri, declared: "Shame on her and shame on this site. Look at her blouse - even the product name is written there." Another, named Raaz, fumed: "I wish she was not an Afghan person. The bitch should know where to place her picture and it should not be on an Afghan website." An insider at American Idol's base at Fox Studios in LA said: "Simon is

Status Quo rockers honoured with OBEs by Queen

Status Quo rockers Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi have been awarded Order of the British Empire (OBE) medals. The stars were given the honour by Queen Elizabeth II during a ceremony at London's Buckingham Palace. Parfitt and Rossi are both stunned by the prestigious accolades, branding the honour the 'most exceptional moment' of their careers. "This is the most exceptional moment of our careers - there's no two ways about it. This is the most formal occasion I've come to in my life. It's one thing going out to play for 50,000 people. It's another thing talking one-to-one with the Queen - so nerve-wracking," the Daily Express quoted Rossi, 60, as saying. Parfitt, 61, added: "It's wonderful that we have been recognised for what we've done. We never would have expected this when we started out 40-odd years ago. Never in a million years do you dream you're going to become Officers of the British Empire and meet the Queen, i

Goldie Hawn planning to set up school in UK

Hollywood actress Goldie Hawn is planning to set up a state school in Britain. The stunner is in talks with the Tories to set up the school where kids would learn breathing exercises to improve their concentration, reports The Times. The "Jewish-Buddhist" actress has pioneered an unorthodox teaching method used in American schools that claims to make students less aggressive. Hawn has even visited the House of Commons to discuss plans to open a UK "showcase" for her MindUp technique should the Tories win the general election. Michael Gove, the shadow schools secretary, said: "We are going to have another meeting to discuss how she might be able to help and influence education here."

Jolie "in no rush" to adopt Haitian orphan

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is in no rush to adopt an orphan from Haiti. While visiting Port-au-Prince, the actress, in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, voiced her concerns about the risk of child trafficking in earthquake-torn Haiti and misguided actions by prospective adopters, reports The Telegraph. Jolie, who has three adoptive children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, told CNN: "Trafficking has been a huge problem for a very long time. "Everybody that means well needs to really take that very seriously, and not get frustrated, but really work with the country. "For somebody who is an adoptive parent, I understand the urge to assist in that way. But now is not the time, an emergency is not the time for new adoptions in any way." When quizzed about whether or not she's considering adding to her brood, Jolie, who also has three biological children with her actor partner Brad Pitt, said: "I'm alwa

World's Highest Open Air Escalator

Image
World's Highest Open Air Escalator The Umeda Sky Building is the seventh-tallest building in Osaka City, Japan, and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It consists of two 40-story towers that connect at their two uppermost stories, with bridges and an escalator crossing the wide atrium-like space in the center. The escalator ride is an event in itself as it feels like you are floating up into the sky. They lead to the observation area of the twin towers. Located in the Umeda district of Kita-ku, the building was originally conceived in 1988 as the "City of Air" project, which planned to create four interconnected towers in northern Osaka. Eventually, practical considerations brought the number of towers down to two.
