Vikalp Movie Review

Image
This is something I fail to understand. Why do interesting ideas or one-page concepts fail to translate into a fascinating and captivating screenplay? I can list a number of films that boasted of attention-grabbing stories, but the excitement disappears as you watch the reels unfold. VIKALP, directed by Sachin P. Karande, suffers for this reason. The Australian mini-series BANGKOK HILTON [1989] is fresh to this date. In Bollywood, the most famous interpretation of the mini-series remains GUMRAH [Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt]. VIKALP doesn't really borrow from BANGKOK HILTON, but you can draw parallels with the plot. Besides, VIKALP also talks of hacking and terrorism, so that makes it all the more interesting.  So what's the problem? Well, the writer seems clueless when it comes to doing justice to the subject material. What could've been a taut edge-of-the-seat thriller becomes a tame, bland and amateurish attempt in its latter reels. In fact, the sequences le

Impatient Vivek Movie Review

A thought often crosses my mind while watching some films. Do people involved in those films actually know what they're making? This thought crossed my mind not once, twice or thrice, but several times while watching IMPATIENT VIVEK . One wonders what this film is all about. Is it a love story? Or is it about a dysfunctional family's quarrels? Is it meant to make you laugh? Sadly, in this film the laughs are hard to come by. To be honest, I didn't quite understand what this film was trying to say in the first place. Assorted characters and various plots have been mixed and merged to make a 2-hour fare, which, sadly, leaves you feeling exasperated at its conclusion.  Vivek [Vivek Sudershan], who people fondly call IV, falls hopelessly in love with Shruti [Sayali Bhagat] at the scenic locales of Goa. After a cold response from her, the dejected IV returns to his hometown in Rajasthan and two years later, fate knocks on his doors as he accidentally bumps i

Patiala House Music Review

Image
EXPECTATIONS A quintessential full-on-Punjabi soundtrack - that's what one expects from the soundtrack of Patiala House which brings Akshay Kumar back as a Punjabi (more than two years after Singh Is Kinng ). Of course the difference in sensibilities of Anees Bazmee and Nikhil Advani means that despite Punjabi being a common thread here, the flavour and treatment of the music would be totally different here. This is the reason why when one reads the names Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy as the composers here (instead of Pritam) and Anvita Dutt Guptan as the lyricist (instead of Irshad Kamil), it is quite apparent that there would be something different that Patiala House would have to offer. Well, different Patiala House indeed turns out to be as the first note of ' Laungda Lashkara ' is hit. Really, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy crack it instantly by coming up with a chartbuster of a track that doesn't require more than half a listening to be confirmed as a song that has ma
