Bollywood comes together for a cause courtesy STAR

Image
Bollywood showed unity to raise funds for the Cine and TV artists. This a joint project by CINTAA and Star Plus. To raise funds, 52 actors came together to perform on stage. The names are Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and so on. The fund will be used in the welfare of the artists. They will be provided with medical services, rehearsal halls and preview theatres. Speaking about the venture, Mithun Chakroborty Chairman of Cine Artistes Welfare Trust said, "The tower will have all the amenities. It will have an entertainment section, cafeteria, library, preview theater and many more facilities for the artists. It did take a lot of time but now hopefully we will complete the project very soon." "I am very happy to be here and be a part of this spectacular event that will not only entertain the audience but will also encourage a noble cause. I have been a part of Bollywood for over 20 years now and I owe every bit of my success to

Indian media industry poised for a recovery: FICCI-KPMG

Image
The Indian media and entertainment (M&E) industry is poised for recovery in 2010, riding on the back of economic growth picking up and favorable demographics of the country as per the FICCI-KPMG report on the Media and Entertainment industry. Sectors like films and out-of-home (OOH) registered a negative growth during the year. The report says that even in 2010, they are expected to recover with an almost flat or moderate growth rate. Growth in the M&E industry is likely to be driven by the growth in subscription through enhanced penetration and expansion of digital delivery infrastructure. As per the report, rising disposable incomes of the working population and increased spend on discretionary items, not only in Tier 1 but also Tier 2 and 3 cities is expected to continue impacting the M&E industry favorably. Growth of newer delivery platforms with superior technology and functionality is likely to expand horizons for the M&E business. Aspirations of

Boman Irani on his experience of working with Shyam Benegal

Image
If you enjoy working in a film, the experience lingers in your memory for years and years. Boman Irani cherishes every moment he spent on the sets of WELL DONE ABBA, so much so that when Shyam Benegal concluded the shooting and threw a farewell party for the cast and technicians on the sets of the film, Boman couldn't help but get moist-eyed. Boman says, he doesn't prefer outdoor shoots, since he misses his family the most. "But I thoroughly enjoyed working on this film. It's a dream to work with Shyam Babu [Benegal] at least once and I was genuinely awaiting that opportunity. And one fine day he called and said something very nice. He said, 'Boman, I have finally found something befitting your calibre'," Boman recalls. Before working with the veteran film-maker, Boman was under the impression that Shyam Babu was a strict disciplinarian. "But he was from being a dictator on the sets. On the contrary, he kept us smiling all through the making of the fi

Arshad Warsi throws light on differences with director Kabeer Kaushik

Image
Arshad Warsi is ready to face the biggest examination of his professional life. His debut film as producer, HUM TUM AUR GHOST , is scheduled for release next Friday. "I am excited and confident. I've made this film with a lot of passion and I sincerely hope the audience likes the effort," Arshad informs me. Meanwhile, the industry is abuzz with the speculation that Arshad had problems with the director of the film, Kabeer Kaushik. That explains why Arshad decided to take matters in his hand. "Well, we never got into fights. I am not the violent kind," Arshad states on record, "But it's true that Kabeer and I had differences." The differences stemmed from the fact that Kabeer wanted to make HUM TUM AUR GHOST into a serious film, while Arshad wanted it to be a light entertainer. "That's true," Arshad doesn't deny the industry talk, "Kabeer's interpretation was tilting more towards serious, while I wanted it to b

Sony PlayStation Move no memory hog but has controller limitations

Image
So, we already know the Sony PlayStation Move controller is coming Fall 2010 and should be priced – in “starter kit” form – at under $100, but we’re still seeing more tidbits about the motion-control system drip out GDC this week. There’s good news and bad, unfortunately, including a limitation on multiplayer support in part thanks to the PS3’s own Bluetooth connectivity capabilities. Turns out, while up to four-player gaming is possible, that’s not if everyone wants to use both the Move controller and a sub-controller. Sony have confirmed to Gizmodo that the PS3 will either support four Move controllers on their own, or a pair of them with sub-controllers. That means that motion-only games will be suitable for up to four players, but anything requiring extra degrees of control that a sub-controller would bring will only be usable by two gamers at a time. Four PlayStation Move controllers can connect to a PS3 at one time (or two PlayStation Move Controllers and 2 PlayStation Move su

Barnes & Noble eReader for iPad promised, but will Apple approve?

Image
Apple have made no secret of the fact that they’re positioning the iPad as an ideal ebook reader device, but if Barnes & Noble have their way – and if they can navigate the App Store guardians – iBooks won’t be the only way to buy ebooks on the tablet. According to the retailer’s blog, a version of their free B&N eReader app – already available for the iPhone and iPod touch – is in development for the iPad, and B&N expect it to be ready at roughly the same time as the iPad itself. The software should allow pretty much the same functionality as versions for other platforms, together with B&N’s own dedicated nook ebook reader (which we reviewed late last year). That will mean you can buy content directly from the app through B&N’s eBookstore (which has over 1m ebooks, magazines and newspapers) together with access existing purchased content. What remains to be seen, of course, is how happy Apple are with the prospect of on-device competition for the ebook and digita

Unreal Engine 3 hits Palm’s webOS

Image
Palm’s Pre and Pixi aren’t exactly known as gaming powerhouses, but that could go a long way in changing now that Unreal Engine 3 is arriving for the webOS platform. Announced at the Game Developers’ Conference this week, the new UE3 release – which should be available to licensees soon – works hand in hand with Palm’s Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) beta. Unreal Engine 3 is the engine behind Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War, among multiple other titles, and from what we’re hearing from the GDC its performance on webOS was surprisingly good. There’s even a minimal frame-rate preview version for webOS’ card view, though if you leave your game mid-play to enjoy it then we don’t see you lasting the level. Since the Pre is based on the same processor that iPhone 3GS game developers have had such success with recently, we’re hoping that this could be the shot in the arm Palm needs to stay topical.

HTC Touch Pro2 Android hack: best hardware keyboard on Android to-date?

Image
Loading Android onto hitherto Windows Mobile devices isn’t exactly new – we’ve seen various builds of Google’s platform on everything from the Samsung Omnia i900, the HTC Diamond and dual-booting on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 – but until now each of the implementations have been pretty half-hearted. Arriving full of functionality and just gagging to get its binary on your HTC Touch Pro2, however, comes xda-developers’ latest release, complete with fully working voice, SMS and data support. PocketNow booted up their test Pro2 with the new ROM to put it through its paces, and shot the demo video you can see below. There’s no lag and the Android build takes advantage of the WVGA touchscreen. Now, we made no bones about our appreciation for the Touch Pro2 when we reviewed it back in 2009, with an excellent hardware keyboard and sturdy build quality only really let down by the native Windows Mobile OS. Load up Android, however, and the experience is a lot more interesting; in fact this

Three Windows Phone 7 Series devices, all in a row

Image
Well, there they are, the only three confirmed Windows Phone 7 Series prototype devices that currently exist. From left, we have the new Samsung slate that debuted today, the just-for-demos unbranded Asus unit that was the star of MWC, and the LG slider that we got cozy with at the Engadget Show. We're still hoping for more time with the Samsung -- and we're pushing for more detailed specs on all of these -- but check out some high-res crops in the gallery below.

Confirmed: HTC HD2 will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 series

Image
Bad news, HTC HD2 owners: Microsoft has finally come right out and confirmed our suspicions that the mighty HTC HD2 won't be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 Series. Joe Belfiore just told us that the HD2 is "not compliant with the Windows Phone 7 Series hardware specifications," which should end any of the lingering doubt that's clouded this issue since MWC. That certainly puts a damper on the HD2's upcoming launch on T-Mobile, but hey -- every Microsoft employee here at MIX is carrying one, so it's clearly the WinMo handset to get until it's eclipsed by 7 late in the year. Pour one out for the king, friends.

Windows Phone 7 Series will be WVGA only at launch, HVGA later

Image
Microsoft's driving home the point that developers are going to know exactly what kind of hardware they're targeting as they whip up Windows Phone 7 Series apps -- and naturally, a biggie is screen resolution since that affects how UI elements are going to be placed, how cool they can look, and how small they can realistically be. In a session at MIX10, Microsoft's Charlie Kindel has laid down the law that WP7S will be 800 x 480 -- just 800 x 480 -- at launch, a message we heard at MWC last month, but the new tidbit here is that there'll be 480 x 320 in the pipe for an unannounced later date. All devices will have precisely the same amount of available RAM and the same capacitive touch capability, and as we've already know, manufacturers will be able to tack on a keyboard if they like.

Samsung Windows Phone 7 Series handset makes the scene

Image
Here's a fun little surprise: Microsoft's Joe Belfiore just ran through a Windows Phone 7 Series demo on an as-yet unannounced Samsung device here at MIX. Apart from hints at an OLED screen, we don't much about the specific hardware, but Joe also showed off a slide of the WP7S minimum requirements, so we can tell you it has at least 256MB of RAM and 8GB of flash, as well as DirectX9 acceleration. We're due to meet with Joe in just a few, so we'll obviously dig for more -- stay tuned!

Confirmed: Marketplace will be the only way to get apps on Windows Phone 7 Series

Image
We just got out of a meeting with Microsoft's Todd Biggs, who dropped a little bombshell on us: the only official way to get apps on a Windows Phone 7 Series device will be to download them from the just-detailed Windows Phone Marketplace. That means developers will have to abide by Microsoft's technical and content guidelines in order to make it in, with the very real possibility of rejection -- sound familiar? Todd told us Microsoft plans to avoid Apple-style submission headaches by making the process transparent and predictable, with a group of Microsoft execs regularly meeting to examine edge cases and refine the guidelines as needed, but even the best intentions can be led astray by a sexy app or two. We also got some additional details on Marketplace and how it's going to work, catch the highlights after the break. Update: Microsoft wanted us to clarify that enterprise customers will be able to deploy apps to employees outside the consumer-facing Marketplace -- detail

Netflix prototyped for Windows Phone 7 Series

Image
We just got a quick at Netflix for Windows Phone 7 Series, one of the third-party apps Microsoft's showing off here at MIX10, and it looks... well, very Netflixy -- it's red to the bone. Unlike other mobile Netflix apps, this one's got Watch Instantly support and it looks great -- a real testament to the capabilities Microsoft's bringing to the table with it Silverlight-based dev platform. Video after the break!

Windows Phone Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 Series unveiled

Image
The biggest chunk of eye candy we've seen out of Microsoft's MIX10 event so far today has been the unveiling of the significantly-retooled Windows Phone Marketplace that'll debut in Windows Phone 7 Series -- and needless to say, it's a looker. It's got support for credit card purchases, operator billing, and ad-supported content -- a hot topic right now with Google's and Apple's mobile advertising acquisitions -- and a try-before-you-buy scheme not unlike Android Market's policy (though WP7S devs can choose what kind of trial period they want to offer; Android devs have no such option). We've been offered some video of the new Marketplace in action, and it looks super polished and well-integrated with the typical WP7S way of getting around -- you're given a "panoramic view" where you can browse categories and titles, see featured items, and get details with ratings, reviews, screen shots, and pricing information. Purchased apps can be p

Microsoft announces Windows Phone 7 Series dev partners and details apps: Sling, Pandora, Foursquare and Xbox gaming

Image
Microsoft just dropped its first press release of MIX 10 on us, and in addition to detailing the Sliverlight and XNA-based Windows Phone 7 Series development situation, we've also got a list of launch software partners and some screenshots of apps in action. There's some heavy hitters here, and everything from games to enterprise apps are represented -- notables include the Associated Press, Citrix, EA Mobile, Foursquare, Namco, Pangeonce, Pandora, Seesmic, Shazam, and Sling. We're slated to see some demos of these in action, we'll let you know how things look. Full list after the break.

Microsoft tells its Windows Phone 7 Series developer story, tools available today

Image
At its dev-focused MIX10 event kicking off today, Microsoft's closing the loop on some of the Windows Phone 7 Series third-party development details it started sharing in the days leading up to GDC last week -- and as you might expect, Silverlight and XNA are the stars of the show. XNA will naturally be the core, critical element of Redmond's gaming story while Silverlight is serving as a catch-all for the "rich internet applications" that make up much of your other mobile activities for those rare moments when you're not... you know, blowing up aliens or navigating a race course littered with your opponents' destroyed vehicles. To that end, Microsoft is kicking things off on the right foot by offering a free package of developer tools to would-be WP7S coders that includes both Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone and the Silverlight-focused Expression Blend for Windows Phone, pretty much everything you need to start building apps in preparation for th

Lip reading mobiles are wunderbar, still at the prototype stage

Image
We came across this lip reading prototype during our exploration of the CeBIT 2010 halls, and while we're a bit tardy in bringing it to your attention, there's a certain timeless quality to strapping your face with wired sensors that transcends conventional restrictions of timeliness. That's our story anyway. Devised by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, it picks up the motion of speech (via electromyography) without requiring the sound, and then translates it into audible communication via a delightfully cold and robotic voice. The purposes of such a project are obvious -- from helping people who've lost their speech to making private telephone conversations actually private -- but the fun is in seeing someone use the thing in its current unrefined form. You'll be able to do that just past the break.

HTC Legend will be exclusive to Vodafone in UK, coming in April together with Desire

Image
Vodafone has today announced that it will be the exclusive UK carrier of that aluminum-clad successor to the Hero: the HTC Legend. Advance registration pages for it and its family mate, the Desire, have gone live today and indicate an April launch date -- something we'd already expected thanks to Amazon's delivery estimates for unlocked handsets. The two HTC devices are flanked by Sony Ericsson's long awaited X10 and the Nexus One, with the latter lacking a release date. It's interesting that as things stand the Desire (HTC's own-branded Nexus One) will beat its precursor to the UK market. Same could be true of Spain, where Engadget Spanish notes that Vodafone has confirmed an April arrival for HTC's full family of new phones, including the HD Mini.

Keepin' it real fake: iPhone hits discount retailers as an eyeshadow palette

Image
Now, these may have been around for ages, we can't really be sure because, truth be told, it's pretty rare for us to troll the aisles of Kohl's makeup section looking for KIRFs. Regardless, a helpful, hawk-eyed reader snapped this shot of an eyeshadow palette -- called eyemobile -- that's got the distinct iPhone aura going on, though we're 100 percent certain this is an unauthorized use case. It's hard to say from the photo, but it also looks like there's a lip gloss palette in the background (which we assume is called lipmobile), and that, friends, we would pay money for. Lots of money.

Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 Brings Full-On Solution for Multitasking

Image
Whether or not you consider this three years in the making or not, this rumor has several thousand people out there breathing a large sigh of relief. One of the most highly regarded (missing) features on the iPhone, it seems that times are certainly changing, as Apple have gone ahead and included the feature into the new build of their Operating System. Oh, did we forget to mention? This is just a rumor. Apple’s been thinking about multitasking from the get-go. They’ve mentioned it a couple times, at a few key points over the years since the launch of the iPhone, and there’s never been any question that the Cupertino-based company has been working on some kind of multitasking technology. There’s all sorts of reasons why Apple didn’t want multitasking on their device, primarily the concern for battery life, security, and resource allocation. But, there’s also the fact that the iPhone lacks the kind of User Interface generally seen for multitasking devices. The multiple homescreens are

Intendix Meshes the Line Between Brain and Computer, For a Price

Image
Welcome to the future, ladies and gentlemen. What we have here, by definition, is exactly where technology should be going. While we love all our gadgets, from the smallest magnets to the largest LED TVs, it’s this kind of tech that makes our spines tingle. After all, even if it may not work as well as it does in all those science-fiction movies, it’s sure going in the right direction. Intendix wants to make it possible for those who may not be able to speak, to finally get what they want to say out to those around them, and we can’t help but love the process. The Intendix computer was debuted during CeBIT 2010, but there were some key details missing from the presentation. The technology itself was created by the Austrian Guger Technologies, or g.tec, to better improve the lives of those with any kind of locked-in syndrome, or any other kind of situation that may prevent someone from telling people what they want or need. And yes, you are right about what it does: the system is a thou

Sony EVIL Touchscreen Camera Gets Software Leaked Through Pictures

Image
We love gadgets with cool names. And while Sony’s BLOGGIE may take the crown for strangest, the EVIL camera takes the cake for awesome . The EVIL part stands for (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens), and that basically does a great job of breaking down the core elements of this camera. While the looks may not attract the most hardcore of consumer, it may have enough in the software end of things to make anyone on the fence change their mind, given enough hands-on time with the device. About a month ago, at the PMA show, images of the EVIL camera came to light. And while they did a great job of showcasing the camera proper, there were some question floating around on how snapping photos would be handled, among a few others. Well, it’s all been answered now, as the latest images of the EVIL’s methods have come out, and show a touchscreen. It also shows us that photographers will also be able to save images in the JPEG and RAW modes. Plus, there’s an APS-C sized sensor in this lit

Fridge magnets look like iPhone icons

Image
One of the most popular brands of gear in all of geekdom is Apple. Pretty much everything Steve and his fruity cohorts make turns out to be gold, other than Apple TV anyway. Among the most popular devices Apple offers is the iPhone with hoards of dedicated users. If you want to show off your fondness for the iPhone, Jailbreak Toys has the perfect fridge magnets for you. The individual magnets look like the icons form the iPhone home screen and can be arranged to whatever design you want. Each of the magnets measures 7/8″ x 7/8″ and are made from some sort of epoxy. The outer cardboard packaging is 9.5″ x 5″. It’s not clear is the iPhone looking frame in the picture above (which could be the cardboard outer packaging) is included or just for showing off the magnets on the website. The company points out that the magnets are not affiliated with Apple. I have to wonder if Apple will go after these guys to stop them from ripping off their icons. You can get your own set now for $12.99 with

Carbon fiber electric bike uses frame instead of wires to conduct power

Image
In some urban areas where there are lots of cars and people the fastest way to get around is often a bike or walking. In more spread out rural areas riding a bike to work can mean a trek of many miles. A cool new bike concept with a carbon fiber frame and electric power has turned up that makes getting where you need to go cool and green. According to the designer, the carbon fiber frame is conductive and would be used to conduct the electric power rather than wires. The concept has electric motors between the dual-rims in front and back of the bike. The concept also uses regenerative braking to generate power for the battery that drives a counterturning axle rather than gears or chains like most bikes use. This concept is a bit farther along than some we have seen, the creator already has a prototype built and in testing. I wonder how the bike protects the rider from the power sent through the frame.

Guitarbud lets you connect your guitar to your iPhone

Image
As close as I come to playing a musical instrument is the occasional round of Rock Band. If you are a guitarist looking for an easier way to record your songs and jam sessions, using your iPhone or iPod touch the Guitarbud device is just what you need. The Guitarbud is a cable that lets you connect your guitar directly to your iPhone or iPod touch and offers a headphone jack as well for private listening. Once connected your guitar playing can be recorded using various iPhone or iPod applications. Once you are done playing you can send your music off to friends via email. The cable is six feet long and doesn’t take up lots of space when you are on the road. The guitar plug is 1/4″ and the headphone and iPhone plugs are 1/8″. The cable requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later and works on second gen iPod touch players with OS 3.0 installed.

Panasonic full HD 3D home theater system in Best Buy Magnolia stores now

Image
I have been anxiously waiting for 3D home theater gear to hit the market in force. I’m not planning to upgrade any time soon, I figure in six months or so the equipment will be much better and cheaper as well. If you have your credit card in hand and want a 3D home theater right now Panasonic has announced that its 3D home theater is now available in select Best Buy Magnolia stores exclusively. If your local Best Buy happens to be a Magnolia store carrying the Panasonic gear you can buy the full HD 3D Panasonic system today for $2,899.99. Two components make up the system with the most expensive piece being the 50-inch Panasonic VIERA VT20 3D plasma TV for $2,499.95. The other component is the Panasonic BDT300 3D Blu-ray disc player costing $399.95. The TV includes one pair of 3D glasses and if you need extra active shutter glasses from Panasonic they will cost you $149.95 per set. The rub is that right now there is no 3D content for you to watch and probably won’t be until later this

Western Digital debuts My Passport AV USB HDD

Image
Western Digital is one of the biggest names in storage. The company offers internal hard drives for consumer and enterprise computers along with a full line of external storage solutions for a myriad of uses like the My Passport Studio unveiled earlier this month. WD has now unveiled another new addition to its external line up called the My Passport AV. The My Passport AV is designed to connect directly to Sony Handicam camcorders supporting the Direct Copy feature along with other devices like TVs and Blu-ray players that have USB ports. The external solution is specifically designed for streaming video content. The My Passport AV is available right now in a 320GB version for $109.99. The drive will directly connect to the WD TV media player line, Direct Copy Sony camcorders, 2010 Sony Blu-ray players, the PS3, Xbox 360, and some JVC, Samsung, and Philips TVs.

OCZ Onyx series SSD offers under $100 price tag

Image
OCZ is a company that many of us are familiar with and the firm made its name in the enthusiast computer industry with some nice RAM. The company also offers a full line of other flash products like flash drives and SSDs such as the limited edition Vertex drive I talked about a few weeks back. OCZ has revealed one of the cheapest SSDs on the market with the first offering in its Onyx SSD series. The first Onyx SSD has 32GB of MLC NAND for storage. That’s not enough space for most of us to use the SSD only, but the thing will make for a nice boot drive for an enthusiast machine. The best thing about the 32GB Onyx SSD is the price. The little SSD sells for under $100. For that much money you get read performance of up to 125MB/s and write performance of up to 70MB/s. The SSD has 64MB of onboard cache and is rated for 1.5 million hours MTBF. The drive works for both desktop and notebook machines.

PC tablet concept has matching smartphone used as QWERTY keyboard

Image
Lots of geeks and gadget hounds out there are counting the minutes until pre-orders for the iPad are being accepted. There are also many people out there that are looking forward to other tablets and smartbooks. One of the coolest concepts for a smartbook I have seen has turned up that was designed by In-oh Yoo and Sun-woong Oh. The concept is cool in many respects. One of the cool features is an integrated stand that lets the user stand the screen of the tablet up so they can work more comfortably. You need a case to do that with the iPad. The coolest feature though is the matching smartphone the concept uses that folds open to offer the QWERTY keyboard used with the tablet. The keyboard is wireless and when folded looks like your average mobile phone and can be used to make calls.

Kanguru whips out Defender Elite remotely manageable flash drive with hardware encryption

Image
Data security is at the front of many minds in the business world. With the ease that data can be copied to and from portable devices today and the fact that these devices are easily lost or stolen means sensitive data has to be protected. Kanguru has a new flash drive that has achieved the FIPS 140-2 certification for data security called the Kanguru Defender Elite. The flash drive is notable for also meeting HIPAA standard in the medical field and Sarbanes Oxley specifications. Kanguru designed the new Defender Elite flash drive to meet the stringent needs of the DoD after it lifted the ban on using flash drives for confidential and top secret documents in the military. The flash drive protects data with 256-bit AES hardware encryption and offers remote management of the drive. The Elite limits the number of password attempts, has master password support, and can be IP or domain restricted. The drive has a tamper resistant design and integrated anti-virus and malware protection. Pric

Dell offers PowerVault DL2100 backup solution for businesses

Image
Years ago, I worked for a company that had three servers running different applications that were all critical to the business. If one went down, they were out of business until the machine came back up. The scary part was that they were only backing up once a week and were using CDRs to make the backups. Dell has unveiled a new backup solution for businesses that is much more efficient than CDs or tape backups called the PowerVault DL2100. The machine is powered by Symantec Backup Exec software in several different forms. The backup device comes in economy and performance versions. The Economy version uses a single Intel Xeon E5520 CPU while the performance version gets two of the same parts. The economy version runs 6GB of RAM with the performance version getting 24GB of RAM. Storage space for both versions is up to four 500GB HDDs in RAID 5 configurations. Dell claims that the DL2100 is 50% cheaper to operate than a tape backup system. The DL2100 can also archive Windows file system

JooJoo tablet updates UI, fully-working Flash support

Image
Fusion Garage may have delayed shipping its tablet for another entire month due to issues with its capacitive touchscreen, but the company has apparently made very good use of the extra time. The JooJoo tablet has just been unveiled with a refreshed user interface, as well as fully-implemented Flash support that actually is “fully working”. Oh, and apparently the tablet has also undergone a physical color change, from a basic black to a “champagne-like” hue. The startup has replaced the formerly-spartan interface with a much more modernized grid look that includes customizable wallpaper and a translucent bar that combines both status and a web address field. Engadget reports “Scroll behavior has been revised as well, with two separate behaviors: a two-finger scroll that works like a scroll wheel, and a single finger “pan” that works like a mouse arrow. That’s so you can move around sites like Google Maps, which have different interface elements mapped to each control — CEO Chandra Ra

Sony officially launches Playstation Move motion controller, available in Fall 2010

Image
Sony has just officially announced its new motion controller at GDC 2010, and it’s dubbed the Playstation Move (for rather obvious reasons). You’ll be able to acquire a Move in three packaged ways: bundled with a PS3, by itself, or in a starter kit targeted at “under $100″ with the Playstation Eye, a controller, and a game, all slated for a Fall 2010 launch. Gizmodo has a hands-on, and Editor Jason Chen takes a few looks (or rather, grips) on the Move: “I just got hands on with two of the games, one is Socom, a shooter that has been adapted to use the Move and the sub-controller, the second is the Sports Champions swordfighting. Socom, compared to point-and-shoot shooters on the Wii, was much smoother, much less jittery and more accurate. Cisco announcing new Flip cams next month?

Image
Well, here’s a good one. Flip video cams have been wildly popular (and quite a good deal for the budding video aficionado). What’s next, 1080P HD recording? (Hopefully).

It’s only been a couple days since the official announcement heard ’round the world: Valve is releasing Steam for Mac. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, one of the biggest reasons Mac users were running BootCamp on their systems has now come their way in a far more native approach. So, while everyone is clearing out their hard drives, Razer wants to make it perfectly clear that they, too, are going to start supporting the Cupertino-based hardware/software combo. Razer announced today at the on-going Gamer Developer’s Conference (GDC) that they are going to issue drivers for Mac users, so that they can install and use all upcoming Razer accessories. But, just to make sure that their current customers aren’t given the shaft, they’re also releasing the driver software for previously released hardware as well. To confirm their diligence, they released the Mac driver for the Naga MMO mouse today, as well as the DeathAdder. The company is one of the best when it comes to gaming peripherals
