BlackBerry Torch headed to Telus (update: and Rogers and Bell)

Image
There had been some rumors floating around that the BlackBerry 9800 might be a Rogers exclusive, but it looks like that's won't be the case -- The Globe and Mail is reporting that phone, now known as the Torch, will be headed to Telus. Still no word on when that will happen, nor is there any word on any other carriers that will be picking up the device -- though there's no indication that it's a Telus-exclusive. Update: The Globe and Mail is now saying that the big three Canadian carriers (Rogers, Bell and Telus) have each confirmed they'll be getting the Torch. Still no launch details, though. Update 2: Rogers is now saying it'll launch in "the coming weeks."

BlackBerry Torch first hands-on

Image
We just got a quick hands-on with the BlackBerry Torch -- unfortunately our unit wasn't powering on. We're headed back for more in just a second and there's video on the way, but check the gallery for some hardware shots and some Droid X / iPhone 4 head-to-head action right now! Update: We went back in for round two with a functional device -- the hardware is quite nice, and the keyboard feels similar to the Tour / Bold. Software-wise, we're still waiting to play with BlackBerry 6 in-depth, but it definitely feels like the OS overwhelms the hardware a little when it's really cranking -- for example, the phone basically locked up while it loaded Engadget in the new Webkit browser, but when it was done loading it responded smoothly to panning and zooming. Update 2: We've got video, people. It's a little scattershot in scope, but it should illustrate the basic feel of the new OS. You can find it below the fold.

RIM launches BlackBerry 6 platform

Image
It's been teased since WES back in April -- but with the launch of the Torch today, RIM had to come clean with all the details on its thoroughly refreshed BlackBerry 6 operating system, too. Besides the obvious name change from "BlackBerry OS" to simply "BlackBerry," the software features countless updates, most notably new universal search functionality, social network aggregation, WiFi-powered media sync with your desktop music collection, and an all-new (and desperately needed) WebKit-based browser with support for HTML5. Thankfully, RIM has also committed to bringing BlackBerry 6 as an upgrade to at least a few recent models -- the Bold 9700, Bold 9650, and Pearl 3G, to be specific -- "subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead.

BlackBerry Torch is official, launching August 12th on AT&T for $200

Image
It hasn't been announced just yet -- we're expecting that shortly at a New York event today -- but the long-rumored BlackBerry Torch (née 9800) just went live on AT&T's site offering the opportunity to sign up for a notification when you can buy the thing. Major features include a 5 megapixel cam with flash, full QWERTY on a portrait slide, 802.11n support, and -- of course -- BlackBerry 6 with an all-new browsing experience and a host of other features that should help position RIM within earshot of its less-stodgy rivals. You've also got 4GB of storage onboard paired with a 4GB microSD card in the box, 512MB each of ROM and RAM, a quadband 3G radio that'll travel well around the globe, a 480 x 360 touchscreen display (same resolution as the Bold 9700) measuring 3.2 inches, the typical optical trackpad down below, and an interesting new Media Sync feature that'll let you sync your media library right over WiFi -- something various third parties have tried

RIM reported to have agreed to snooping deal with India, says 'no way!'

Image
Reports out of India this morning claim that RIM has agreed a deal with the local government to permit its security agencies to "monitor" email and messaging done on BlackBerry device s. There's even a roadmap for this snooperiffic rollout, as all consumer email is expected to be opened up within 15 days and tools are being developed over the next six to eight months to allow chat surveillance as well. A very detailed report indeed, but the IDG News service reports RIM has rubbished the entire thing, stating it's in a continuing dialog with the Indian government and discussions remain confidential. Then again, we'd expect RIM to keep up the facade as long as possible, considering the likely domino effect a capitulation in India would have in nearby states that have similar security concerns. In the mean time, Nokia has meekly announced it'll be complying with the Indian government's rules for push mail and is "installing the required infrastructure.&q

Huawei's E583C mobile hotspot: looks so good, you'll wish it weren't portable

Image
Okay, so maybe that's a stretch, but there's no question that Huawei 's newest mobile hotspot is indeed a looker. Blessed with a silver and black motif as well as a subtle 1-inch color OLED for providing status information at a glance, the new E583C follows in the footsteps of the E585 and Vodafone's R201. Functionally, it's fairly predictable, offering a 3.5G HSPA connection to up to five devices over WiFi and a sixth via a direct USB connection. There's support for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms, with a promise of hitting upwards of 5.76Mbps (up) and 7.2Mbps (down). Huawei's also tossing in a microSD card slot, and if you aren't turned on byMiFi-esque mobile routers, the newly introduced E173u USB modem just might do the trick. Catch 'em later this month in Hong Kong for HK$1,380 ($177) and HK$498 ($64), respectively.

Motorola Grasp reminds us company still does Android-free gear

Image
It may not be the EX112 / EX115 they seem to be getting down in Brazil, but the Motorola Grasp isn't far off, proving that Motorola's still committed to delivering non-Android phones in market segments where... well, Android might kinda be overkill. The CDMA / EV-DO phone is capable of operating both on 800 / 1900MHz and on AWS bands, meaning we wouldn't be surprised to see it land on regionals like MetroPCS where AWS has started to play a prominent role. It's got a 1.3 megapixel cam, 3.5mm headphone jack, AGPS, stereo Bluetooth, microSD expansion to 8GB, and -- something Moto has been playing up since the Renew -- an eco-friendly design with a completely recyclable shell when you've finished texting on that QWERTY keypad for the last time. Look for it to launch this quarter.

Dropbox goes to private beta for BlackBerry

Image
With Android and iPhone clients already under its belt, online storage service Dropbox is well on its way to being on a majority of the world's key smartphone platforms -- and now, it's adding BlackBerry to the stable. 1,000 lucky jerks were already able to get into the closed beta, but it seems the rest of the world will have to wait until the beta goes public or the software goes gold, whichever comes first. Now we just need a little Symbian love and we should have this thing locked up, eh, guys?

EVO 4G starts getting Android 2.2 update over the air

Image
We've just gotten a deluge of tips that EVO 4G s are starting to get blessed with the official update to Froyo -- a few hours prior to the promised August 3 rollout -- so if you've got one handy, you're going to want to start checking it right this second. Seriously, now that it's got a trick flashlight app included in ROM, what could you possibly be waiting for? On a related note, if you happened to apply that early update that HTC posted and pulled late last week, the company's working on a fix so that you aren't out of the over-the-air update loop and promises to "get back" in "the coming days."

Samsung Galaxy U and Galaxy K add to the alphabet soup in South Korea

Image
SK Telecom already offers a version of the Galaxy S -- but it's often the case that two or all three of Korea's top wireless players want in on the same hot handsets, so it's no surprise to hear that rivals LG U+ and KT are both working on flavors of their own. Confusingly, they'll be called the Galaxy U and the Galaxy K -- apparently in tribute to their carriers' names -- but they'll both be a touch smaller than the original S, clocking in at 3.7 inches (see the U pictured next to an S above). Word on the street is that they'll both be hitting between August and September, so the wait's a mercifully short one. Ironically, it's the supply of Samsung's 3.7-inch AMOLED displays that forced HTC's hand on moving into SLCD -- so we guess this is where part of that supply's being diverted

AT&T blocking Dell Streak beta units?

Image
There's a fascinating discussion going on over in MoDaCo 's forums today suggesting that Dell Streak units that were given out recently as part of the company's US beta test in and around Austin, Texas are no longer functioning on AT&T, the result of an apparent IMEI block; voice calls placed from the devices all get re-routed to AT&T customer service, and 2G / 3G data doesn't work at all. Our understanding is that beta testers were allowed to keep their units after the conclusion of the test period -- some of those ended up on eBay, naturally, so you can imagine that buyers are probably feeling a little steamed by this. One user has had luck with data by using the iPad's APN and plan settings, but otherwise, there seems to be a bit of frustration going around. We've reached out to AT&T to figure out what's going on; we'll let you know when we have more.

LG Wink series custom crafted for 'Generation Z,' Gen Y need not apply

Image
Generation Z , as far as we can tell, roughly refers to kiddies born between 1991 and 2009 -- which means that if you're the ripe old age of 20, LG's not really looking to target you with its new full-touch Wink line, specifically identified as a Gen Z special in the press release. Of course, considering the specs, you probably won't be shedding many tears; the entry-level Wink (pictured left) has just a 2.4-inch display, the Wink Style isn't much more generous at 2.8, and the "high end" Wink 3G (pictured right) seems to be the only one of the bunch with high-speed data. All three have 3.5mm headphone jacks, integrated FM radios, and microSD expansion, but if you're an American Gen Z'er, don't get too excited -- it's only slated for Europe and the Middle East this month followed by Latin America, the CIS, and "select Asian countries" later in the third quarter. Follow the break for LG's release.

BlackBerry users running out of loyalty: 50 percent plan to defect to iPhone or Android

Image
Nielsen has its own angle on the smartphone numbers game out today, and the results vaguely resemble thenumbers from Canalys. Perhaps more interesting than the ever present market share tug-of-war (Nielsen pegs Google, RIM, and Apple at 27 percent, 33 percent, and 23 percent in sales to new smartphone subscribers, respectively) a note on brand loyalty turns out ugly for BlackBerry: while 89 percent of iPhone owners plan on getting another iPhone, and 71 percent of Android buyers plan to re-up, only 42 percent of BlackBerry owners plan to stick around. The defectors are pretty evenly split, with 29 percent planning to go iPhone, and 21 percent to go Android. That compares to 2 and 3 percent in the iPhone and Android camps planning a move to BlackBerry. We'll see if BlackBerry 6 can solve this little problem for RIM, but the few tweaks we've seen so far seem hardly capable of stemming the flow.

Motorola turns Droid X's source code loose -- some of it, anyhow

Image
This might not have a ton of relevance as long as we've gota nearly airtight bootloader lock standing in our way, but we suppose it's a start: Motorola has outed the Droid X'ssource code, though it's apparently left some key bits out, just as it's entitled to do under the terms of Android's Apache License. Of course, this isn't anything new -- HTC does the same, mainly releasing only stuff that it has to by virtue of the kernel's GPL licensing -- and considering the customizations all these guys are doing, it's not an entirely surprising way to go about it. In other words, don't expect custom firmware to start popping up left and right -- not until our ever-trusty hacking community figures out a way to fully circumvent the eFuse noise.

Nokia's treatment of MeeGo smartphone UI revealed?

Image
We've already gotten a glimpse at MeeGo 's prerelease stock UI for handsets, but just like Symbian, there's no guarantee that the experience is going to be consistent across manufacturers -- and a new video apparently captured from an online survey makes it seem like Nokia might be looking to go in a slightly different direction. The one minute, twenty-nine seconds of footage walks us through five parts -- starting up, the "powerful multitasking UI," getting connected, the Ovi Store experience, and the music player -- and as you might imagine, it's the Ovi Store portion that has us feeling like this is a thoroughly Nokia-customized experience (not to mention the copyright in the lower left). It generally looks richer and more functional than what we've seen before, and parts -- like the webOS-esque multitasking -- remind us of Maemo 5's thumbnails, which makes perfect sense considering MeeGo's roots

iPhone 4 jailbreak enables FaceTime video calling over 3G

Image
We'd actually already hacked up a 3G FaceTime video call using an iPhone 4 and a MiFi, but now that Apple's latest handset has been jailbroken, you can toss the extra hardware -- you just need a little Cydia app called My3G, which lets you run WiFi apps over 3G. FaceTime video quality appears to be unaffected, but from what we've seen the framerates suffer depending on your connection -- pretty much what you'd expect to get when running a video stream optimized for high-bandwidth connections on a smaller pipe. Still, it's instantly the best reason to iPhone jailbreak your phone -- check a video after the break. P.S.- If you're averse to jailbreaking, remember that Fring lets you make video calls over 3G without any shenanigans -- and unlike FaceTime, you can also video call non-iPhone users. Just sayin'!

Microsoft algorithm uses six-axis motion sensors to fix blurry snapshots, inadvertently pimping your ride

Image
Trying to snap a shot of your cherry red Mazda, but can't keep your hands still? You'll find all the tech you need to smooth things out in an iPhone 4 or (MotionPlus-equipped) Nintendo Wiimote. Experimenting with 6DOF inertial measurement sensor packages, scientists at Microsoft Research have developed a software algorithm that literally records your exposure-destroying shake via accelerometer and gyroscope, then magically removes the blur by canceling it out. While the technique still isn't perfect -- spot ghostly line above some of those background cars -- the Microsoft researchers compared their results to other in-progress algorithms, and we think you'll agree this new solution presents the best results by far. It's a shame Microsoft doesn't say when we'll see the tech in a spiffy DSLR attachment, or better yet a cameraphone.

Coca-Cola India hands media account to Lodestar Universal McCann

Image
Coca-Cola has appointed Lodestar Universal McCann to its media account following a competitive pitch reported last week. The pitch, which sees incumbent Madison Media ousted after 11 years on the account, was also believed to involve leading agencies Starcom and Carat. Madison Media has handled the business, worth a reported US$44 million, since 1999. Coca-Cola currently works with Starcom in China and UM in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Korea. Carat handles the account in New Zealand. Lodestar will be reponsible for providing integrated communication planning, media execution, strategic analysis and media tracking capabilities for Coca-Cola's entire portfolio of beverages. According to a Coca-Cola India spokesperson, Lodestar showed the highest potential out of all the agencies that participated in the review process. "We are very excited about this partnership and are confident that Lodestar Universal McCann will add value to our business," said

Grey wins Reliance Communications creative biz

Image
After a multi-agency pitch, Reliance Communications has moved its entire wireless business to Grey. The account, reportedly worth over Rs 250 crores, includes all offerings of Reliance Communications including its upcoming 3G launch. According to industry sources, the pitch process was initiated six weeks back. The agencies in the fray included JWT, McCann Erickson, Mudra and incumbent Cartwheel. Confirming this development, Jishnu Sen, chief operations officer at Grey, said, “This is huge. A win this big, a win against industry biggies is a huge testament to the new Grey. We are on the way to being the most famously effective agency in the country. The thing that stood out in this pitch, according to me, is teamwork and passion. Across disciplines. Across levels. 850 schools use Tata Sky Actve Education

Tata Sky has added a new lingo to our everyday conversation-isko laga dala toh life jhingalala. Launched in August 2006, the country’s second-largest DTH service provider has already crossed the 5.5 million subscriber mark. Beaming over 200 channels, the DTH major has five call centres, which take calls in 11 languages. Vikram Kaushik , MD & CEO of Tata Sky, spoke to ET on a range of issues faced by the DTH industry. Excerpts: Soon cable operators will have to shift to the digital system. Do you see any threat to DTH from alternative technologies such as digital cable and IPTV? In a large geographical country like India, DTH is the most preferred and affordable proposition as compared to IPTV and cable. It can reach any geographical location with the same picture quality and sound and at the same price. IPTV has other challenges relating to the last-mile connectivity and the overall cost of access for average consumers. This will take some time to become feasible. If digital c

Astro awaits FIPB nod to up stake in Sun Direct

Image
MUMBAI: The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has deferred a proposal by Kalanithi Maran-owned Kal Media Services, which would have allowed Malaysia-based Astro Group to increase its holding in Sun Direct from 20 per cent to 35 per cent. Kal Media Services, a company owned by the Maran family, had applied for permission for Astro to pick up 37.5 per cent stake in Kal Media Services. Kal Media Services was then to pick up 40 per cent stake in Sun Direct, giving Astro an effective indirect stake of 15 per cent, taking Astro’s effective holding in the DTH company to 35 per cent. Astro, via its subsidiary South Asia Entertainment Holdings, holds 20 per cent stake in Sun Direct. Astro said in its quarter results that it would continue to account for its share of anticipated losses of Sun Direct TV of approximately Rs 7.11 billion over the 5 years from commencement of operations. Meanwhile, the FIPB has cleared a proposal of Sea TV Network, a leading multi-system operator (

‘Sunday Night Football‘ Hall of Fame Game Scores Best NFL Preseason Overnight in 6 Years

“ SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL ” HALL OF FAME GAME SCORES BEST NFL PRESEASON OVERNIGHT IN 6 YEARS SNF Dominates the Night, Delivering Peacock’s Best Sunday Night Performance Since Vancouver Olympics NEW YORK – August 9, 2010 – Last night’s “Sunday Night Football” Hall of Fame preseason game delivered the best overnight rating for any NFL preseason game on any network in six years. The 7.6 overnight rating and 13 share (8:15-11 p.m. ET) for the Dallas Cowboys-Cincinnati Bengals preseason game was the best since the 8.2/13 for the Titans-Cowboys preseason game on August 30, 2004 on ABC. The overnight rating was the best for a Hall of Fame Game in six years (Denver-Washington, 7.7/12 on Aug. 9, 2004), and was up 31 percent over last year’s Buffalo-Tennessee game (5.8/10) and up 41 percent over the Hall of Fame Game in 2008 (Indianapolis-Washington, 5.4/9). “Sunday Night Football” was the No. 1 telecast of the night in the metered markets and dominated its time period, nearly doubling second-plac

The game averaged a 3.7/11 share with adults 18-49 between 8pm-11pm. Although the ratings will certainly change in the final numbers due to the nature of how live events are counted, NBC’s Sunday Night Football still seems a lock to take the week’s top spot with adults 18-49. It was the best overnight number for an NFL preseason game since 2004. Big Brother held up well versus the NFL onslaught, dropping only a 10th of a point with adults 18-49 from last week to a 2.4 rating and the 7.5 million viewers were
