Living Room Video Conferencing Is Here – Are We Ready?

Image
It appears one of the themes of the second half of 2010 is video conferencing. Apple has been driving a lot of awareness with FaceTime. Sprint has been driving awareness with their EVO 4G commercials. Yesterday Cisco and Logitech demonstrated their video conferencing solutions. Both Apple and Sprint have been driving awareness for video conferencing with mobile devices. However Cisco and Logitech demonstrated their approach is to bring video conferencing into the living room. Consumer video conferencing has been one of those things I have watched as an industry insider for a while now. Mostly because I do a lot of analysis around the personal computer and most consumer video conferencing solutions have thus far been PC based. The big question is are consumers ready for living room video conferencing? Is the mass market ready or is it still only for early adopters? Read on for my further analysis. Cisco’s Umi Solution Cisco has taken an approach that simply focuses on gett

In the first half of 2011, Apple is more than likely going to showcase a new iPad . A new model, with new features, and following perfectly in their annual refresh of their products. While that’s expected, what the new tablet device will feature is still up in the air. But that’s why we have analysts, and their predictions. According to Wall Street analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, he expects the new iPad to bring some of the features of the iPhone 4, and a big boost in memory. During a trip to Taipei, White got in touch with some suppliers, and has determined that Apple plans on launching a new iPad in the first quarter of 2011 calendar year. Interestingly enough, his checks with suppliers confirmed some previous rumors that we have heard: a 7-inch display, and feature a mini or micro USB port. While that doesn’t confirm anything, it does show that there’s some rumors that are starting to co-exist. White believes that the new model of the iPad will replace the first gener

Gresso Luxor World Time Phone Puts Sapphire Crystals and World Clocks in Your Hand

For special or limited edition items, there’s got to be something inside the package, or part of the device itself, that makes the title worthwhile. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be very special. However, there are some companies out there that take things to an extreme level. Gresso has done just that, as they’ve unveiled their brand new limited edition cell phone, which features plenty of “extras” that make the title make sense, but will still make your wallet have a panic attack. The Gresso Luxor World Time phone is designed specifically for the world traveler. As you can see from the image above, owners have the ability to bring up the time for six different locations at a time. This is handled by the six independent Swiss clockwork mechanisms. The company says that the power reserve is clocked at 10 years. But, you don’t access the clocks by the front screen. Instead, on the back of the device you’ll find the five clocks showcasing world business centers, including Tokyo, New York, Pari

NVIDIA’s CEO Says Superphones Are Larger than iPhone, Smaller Than Tablets

Image
NVIDIA’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang has been outspoken about the life and times of the superphone/smartphone/tablet market for awhile now, and at a recent press conference for Taiwan media, he went on to describe what he believes a superphone really is. Interestingly enough, he points out that the Motorola Droid X is the first of these so-called superphones, but that there will be plenty more like it, following in its footsteps, in the future. Huang’s outlook on a superphone is pretty robust, even if he is explaining pretty much every smartphone on the market, already available. He does point out, though, that a superphone would be bigger than Apple’s iPhone, and smaller than a tablet PC. (We’re not sure where Dell would stand on this, considering the multiple sizes of their “tablet” devices.) He went on to say that it would open up new opportunities for casual computing, and that these devices will run Google’s Android mobile Operating System. They’ll also be able to connect to the Internet
