Goa revokes permission to hold three-day music festival

The state administration has withdrawn the permission given to a three-day Chakra view music festival in the ecologically sensitive forests near Agonda beach, 80 km from here, citing possibility of narcotics trade at the party site. The permission which was given for the three-day trance music festival on the basis of a police no objection report was revoked Thursday morning, Deputy Collector (law and order) Dipak Dessai told IANS. 'It will be difficult for the Goa police to stop such use of drugs and narcotics and other abuse-related substances as there will be thousands of people including foreigners attending the festival,' Dessai said. The three-day music festival, which authorities now suspect is one of the drug-laced rave parties which Goa has become synonymous with, is scheduled to begin 6 a.m. Friday (Feb 5) and wind up at 12 a.m. Sunday (Feb 7). In December last year, Meha Bahuguna, a young girl from Bangalore died due to suspected drug overdose at the th

Oram onslaught powers New Zealand to 336

Image
A late surge spearheaded by a destructive Jacob Oram propelled New Zealand to 336 for 9 in the first ODI against Bangladesh in McLean Park, Napier. Oram combined with Neil Broome to exploit wayward death bowling to devastating effect, slamming the Bangladesh attack to all corners during the Powerplay overs, and breaking the New Zealand record for the seventh-wicket partnership. When Broom departed for 71 in the 48th over, the pair had put on 123 in 63 deliveries and elevated the home side's position from a worrying 187 for 6 to a commanding 310. Oram batted with the kind of brutal assurance and immense power that he displayed in the early stages of his career, smashing eight fours and five sixes to reach 83 at a strike-rate of over 200 before being cleaned up by a Shafiul Islam yorker in the 50th over. Earlier in the innings, a confident 98-run stand between Ross Taylor and Peter Ingram helped New Zealand overcome early jitters caused by the loss of Brendon McCullum and Martin G

Extra matches for England's Ashes tour

Image
England have got their wish for three first-class warm-up games before the 2010-11 Ashes series after their poor preparation was a factor in their failed defence on the previous trip. Cricket Australia released its fixtures for next summer and in a change to tradition it will begin in October with a limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, while there is no spot in the schedule for the fading Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. The Ashes remains the main event and England, who lifted the urn in August , have locked in three-day games against South Australia and Western Australia and a four-day match against Australia A in Hobart. The tourists hope the extra first-class fixture will settle Andrew Strauss's men before the opening Test in Brisbane from November 25. On the previous tour they opened the trip with a one-day contest before two low-key state games and were under-prepared at the Gabba. After the five-Test series, which is due to finish at the SCG on January 7, the teams have two Tw

Clarke vows to raise his Twenty20 game

Image
Michael Clarke knows he must improve his Twenty20 credentials if he is to be the long-term leader of the side. Clarke has taken over full-time from Ricky Ponting, who retired from the format last year, but is already under pressure in the role with a rise in support for the big-hitting Cameron White. Clarke is a more traditional player and has a highest score of 37 in 19 internationals, batting anywhere from opener to No.7. He will walk out at No.3 in Friday's match against Pakistan at the MCG with personal and team concerns to consider. "I feel like I've got a lot of improvement in me in all forms of the game," he told AAP . "I've batted 15 times in Twenty20 cricket and a fair bit of that was at No.7 during that first World (Twenty20). For me personally, I'm looking to learn as much as I can about the game but in saying that, also be successful." Clarke will not try to position himself as a power striker to prove his worth. "It's n

Terry Jenner completes Zimbabwe spin clinics

Terry Jenner, the legendary legspin coach, has said that he was pleasantly surprised at the talent displayed by some of the up-and-coming bowlers who attended his spin coaching clinics held in Zimbabwe over the last two weeks. "There is definitely a platform from which to develop the skill, especially among the school boys," said Jenner during his last clinic at Bulawayo's Queens Sports Club on Thursday, adding: "There is certainly a bright future for Zimbabwe's spin department." Pupils from Emakhandeni, Christian Brothers College, Luveve High and Mtshingwe College in Bulawayo, and from Prince Edward, St George's College and St John's in Harare, as well as junior spin bowlers from Takashinga Cricket Club, were given training on the fundamentals of wrist spin bowling during the clinics. "The turnout was phenomenal and the schools cricketers are especially privileged to have this kind of training at such a young age," said Shingai Rhuhwa

Psych Plunges From Premiere, Leverage Mixed

Image
Robert posted last week about the 20% ratings fall Leverage suffered against the season premiere of Psych . Last night Psych got hit hard in a post-premiere slump, and Leverage was mixed, but topped Psych in average viewers and closed the gap in adults 18-49. Psych slid almost 35% to just 2.856 million viewers (vs. 4.367 million for the premiere). It’s A18-49 rating fell to a 1.1 from a 1.5 for the premiere. The “USA strategy of moving dramas off Friday was a success” pronouncement may have been a bit premature. TNT might have hoped for a big rebound for Leverage , but it was effectively flat. Down 4% in viewers to 2.913 million (from 3.020 million last week). But it got a little boost in its A18-49 ratings to a 0.9 from a 0.8 last week. Both had a new CSI:NY and Ugly Betty on broadcast as competition this week vs. repeats last week.

MS Patch Tuesday heads-up: 13 bulletins, 26 vulnerabilities

Image
Microsoft’s February batch of security patches will be a biggie — 13 bulletins with fixes for a whopping 26 vulnerabilities. According to an advance notice from the Redmond, Wash. software vendor, five of the 13 bulletins will be rated “critical” because of the risk of remove code execution attacks. [ SEE: Microsoft confirms 17-year-old Windows vulnerability ] The majority of the vulnerabilities affect the company’s flagship Windows operating system while the others will deal with security holes in the Microsoft Office productivity suite. This chart details the affected OS versions and severity ratings for the bulletins, which will be released next Tuesday (February 9, 2010). (Click image for larger version) While the details of the vulnerabilities will be kept a secret until Patch Tuesday, Microsoft says one of the bulletins will address a known privilege escalation flaw (see advisory ) in the Windows kernel. That vulnerability was publicly disclosed by a Google security res

Douglas calmed broody Zeta-Jones with puppy

Hollywood actor Michael Douglas has said that he silenced wife Catherine Zita-Jones' desire to have another child by gifting her a puppy. The couple married in 2000 and share two children, Dylan, nine, and Carys, six - but 40-year-old Zeta-Jones admits she's longed to add a third baby to the family. However, 65-year-old Douglas, who has another son, Cameron, 31, from his marriage to Diandra Luker was not too keen- so promptly decided to but buy her a pup. "I said to him, 'Darling, I really want another baby. Or a puppy.' A puppy came by FedEx so quick," Contactmusic quoted Zeta-Jones as telling America's Us Weekly magazine. Meanwhile, Cameron may have to face an imprisonment of at least 10 years for running a "large-scale" drug racket. Heroin addict Cameron was taken into custody in New York in July 2009 and crystal meth worth about 12,500pounds was seized, Manhattan Superior Court was told.

Teen burglars broke into Hilton's home with key under mat

A member of teenage gang, that has been accused of robbing homes of Hollywood celebrities, revealed that they broke into the Paris Hilton's home using a key she left under her door mat. According to US ABC News, Nick Prugo, who is a part of the gang dubbed the "Bling Ring", said that Hilton was their first target because they considered her "dumb". "Like, who would leave a door unlocked? Who would leave a lot of money lying around?" he said. Prugo also claimed that they found five grams of cocaine in her house, which they also stole. While talking to Good Morning America, Prugo said he got caught up in the robberies due to peer pressure. "There was a definite thrill to it," News.com.au quoted him as saying. He added he was "just trying to keep my friends". However, despite Prugo's admissions to police and the public, he has pleaded not guilty.

"If you can't thrill a person in a thriller then you're in trouble" - Mrinalini Sharma

Image
Mrinalini Sharma. The name rings a bell??? Does Awarapan ring a bell??? Yea you got it! She is back... and back for good to play the game Hide & Seek . This Apoorva Lakhia produced and Shawn Arranha directed film has got her back in action. Oh! But I forgot to mention how good this babe is at her game. I mean, she decided to play one on me too. Don't we say, ''It's difficult to trace a celebrity for an interview?'' Sharma did just that. After sending her ten text messages over a period of one month, I finally managed to find her...and where? At the J.W. Mariott's bar area where I am awaiting her arrival. I was busy reading the newspaper kept on the serving desk...You know...trying to catch up on the current stories. Now you've also heard that how spooky these thriller movies can get sometimes. So as I flip the pages, I don't know why, but I turned behind to see if my lady for the day had arrived. And there she was in her black sun glasses, denims

Twinkle at her stylish best in this month's issue of Grazia

Image
One of the most stylish star-wives in tinsel town is none other than Twinkle Khanna. Twinkle, who still looks like she could give the current breed of actresses a run for their money, features on the cover page of this month's issue of fashion and style magazine Grazia. Looking like a million bucks, Twinkle is seen wearing a red coloured textured dress by Blugirl. In an exclusive interview with Grazia, Twinkle talks about her style statement and her favorite designers. She says, "A woman has to always go by her structure and make the most of it, rather than try to dress like someone else. I love flowing dresses, but I can't really wear them because they overwhelm my frame. For me, everything has to be cinched at the waist." Finally, Twinkle also shares some valuable insights on how she manages to juggle between her various roles of a devoted mother, loving wife, successful businesswoman and veritable style genius. All this and more indeed makes for some very interesti

"Initially we were looking for new face but went for Katrina" - Shirish Kunder

Image
Finally all the speculations can be laid to rest. Ever since Tees Maar Khan was announced with Akshay Kumar in the lead, there were rumours abound about the leading lady in the film. The game of musical chairs was on and there were number of names that were being considered. However, all the juggling around is over and though it hardly comes as a surprise, the fact is that Katrina Kaif has made it to the top of the list and is now the chosen one. "Yes, Katrina Kaif is doing Tees Maar Khan ", confirms Shirish Kunder, producer of the film which would be directed by Farah Khan. If Katrina was indeed such an obvious choice and was in any case being discussed from Day One, what made it so long for the makers to spill the beans? Why the mystery around the announcement when an early declaration of the cast may have probably saved quite a few from any heartburn? "Well, it wasn't that obvious to begin with after all", says Shirish who has worked with Preity Zinta in
