HTC Endeavor ROM hints at HTC Speak potential Siri rival

Image
The HTC Endeavor continues to give up its secrets, with diagrams of the upcoming smartphone along with hints of an “HTC Speak” potential Siri-rival being dragged from the leaked ROM. Curiously, although the quadcore Tegra 3 based Endeavor is believed to be the same as the HTC Edge, the graphics used in the ROM as part of the SIM-insertion sequence show the angular Android device leaked last week. Meanwhile, HDBlog‘s digging has apparently unearthed a movie editing app – and not the regular Google one – along with HTC Speak, a voice command system. Unfortunately, right now there’s little more than naming information for the new HTC apps. It’s unclear whether HTC has followed in Apple’s footsteps and created – or licensed – a true Siri-style digital personal assistant, or whether it’s the more mundane voice-dictation and shortcut system we’ve seen on other Android devices. Still, we’ve been saying HTC should push ahead with its services as a way of differentiating itself from other smart

Boeing says airlines will need 33,500 new commercial aircraft by 2030

Image
When it comes to commercial aircraft, one of the top manufacturers is Boeing. According to the aviation giant, the commercial aircraft industry will boom between now and 2030. Boeing estimates that globally airlines will need 32,500 new aircraft. Many of those aircraft will be needed by Asia-Pacific carriers where 11,450 are estimated to be needed. The cost of those 33,500 new aircraft is estimated to be $4 trillion. Carriers in Asia-Pacific region alone will gobble up 35% of the estimated need with the new aircraft expected to be worth $1.5 trillion. Boeing splits out the estimated 33,500 aircraft expecting that 60% of the new planes will be needed for expanding fleets, while the remainder will be needed to replace aircraft that are getting too old. An estimated 80% of the new aircraft in Asia-Pacific fleets will be needed for expansion. Boeing is planning to serve these new and growing markets in all aircraft ranges from single isle to very large aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner.

Apple forced Pegatron to dump ASUS in ultrabook snub say sources

Image
Apple has strong-armed its MacBook Air manufacturer into refusing to construct ultrabooks for rival ASUS, with Pegatron being given a Cupertino ultimatum to pick between the two accounts. Apple was reportedly frustrated by the resemblance of the ASUS Zenbook range to its own ultraportable, China’s Commercial Times reports, particularly in terms of the exterior design which uses a unibody construction. Pegatron, perhaps unsurprisingly, opted to stick with Apple’s contract rather than that of ASUS. The OEM won iPhone construction contracts last year, and is apparently angling for iPad 3 contacts now. Zenbook production is expected to cease with Pegatron at the end of March, and switch over to either Compal or Wistron. ASUS is said to be trying to keep news of Apple’s OEM machinations low-key, with a spokesperson only telling the paper that it always attempts to be flexible in its supply chain. Pegatron was not responsible for the Zenbook design, which was supposedly carried out entirely

New MySpace owners turn things around ever so slightly

Image
I doubt I’m the only one that thought MySpace was pretty much dead. MySpace was once the biggest and most popular social networking site out there. Back in 2008 during the MySpace heyday, the site racked up 75.9 million unique visitors per month. Back in June when investors bought the site from News Corporation, it was down to 33 million visitors per month. The new owners at MySpace are Tim and Chris Vanderhook, and they plunked down $35 million to get their names on the deed. News Corp had paid $580 million for the site in 2005 and proceeded to run it into the ground admittedly making every mistake possible. The new owners have been working to turn MySpace around by emphasizing the site as music and entertainment hub, and apparently it’s working, to some extent, so far. The NYT reports that MySpace is set to offer its first good news in a long while. The good news is that MySpace has attracted 1 million new users since the Vanderhooks took the site over. The million new users have com

iPad puts the smack down on Samsung in South Korea

Image
Some manufacturers that have recently come onto the Android tablet market with cheap, smaller screen tablets had hoped that they could beat or at least match the iPad. So far, no one has been successful in pulling that off. In South Korea, Samsung’s home country, Apple has recently passed the 1 million iPads sold mark. It beat Samsung to that number on Samsung’s home turf. This is really no surprise given the global popularity of the iPad. TNW reports that Apple is the country’s top tablet maker with combined sales of original iPad and the new iPad 2 getting Apple 70% to 80% of the tablet market inside the country. According to reports, Apple has sold 700,000 iPad devices since the tablet launched in the country last April through the end of 2011. Sales of iPad devices this year put Apple over the 1 million mark. One more interesting things from this report is that the number could actually be well over that 1 million tablets sold mark to South Korean consumers. This figure does not ta

HTC Endeavor leak spills Sense 4.0 secrets

Image
Details on the HTC Endeavor have emerged this weekend, after a ROM for the Android smartphone – believed to be the same device as the HTC Edge – revealed it as a Tegra 3 powered 4.7-inch superphone with an 8-megapixel camera. The ROM was turned up at xda-developers, detailing Android 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0 along with NFC and Beats Audio; then HTC-Hub did some digging, pulling out screenshots of exactly what we have to expect from the newest iteration of HTC’s UI. As well as wallpapers, ringtones and other customizations exclusive to HTC devices, there are also signs that HTC has been tweaking its shortcuts system. The lockscreen now shows not only the four app shortcuts as in previous versions of Sense, but a choice of either individual contact shortcuts – as shown below – or notifications. HTC refers to the two layouts as “productivity” and “contacts”. There are also new, squared-off widgets, losing the bubbly, over-designed stylings of HTC’s older UI and replacing them with cleaner line

Hackers breach Indian Microsoft Store, passwords exposed

Image
Anyone who signed up for an account or purchased items from the Microsoft Store in India has reason to be concerned today. Over the weekend, hackers were able to break into the Microsoft India store and compromised the store database. The database breach apparently happened last night and the home page of the site was replaced with one showing the photo you see below. The photo that replaced the website homepage showed that the responsible parties for the hack were EvilShadow team – 7z1&Ancker. The hackers are apparently from China and at this point, there’s no indication of why they hacked the site. The hackers were also able to upload an additional photo some verbiage the read “Unsafe system will be baptized.” The part of this hack that will concern people who have done business with the Microsoft Store in India the most is that the database was breached, and passwords were stolen. The passwords were reportedly stored on the server in plain text. As of now, there’s no word on whe

Apple TV refresh imminent suggests broad stock shortages

Image
The Apple TV could be in line for an imminent refresh, with the news that Apple’s set-top box is out of stock in multiple stores and, according to leaks from within Best Buy, can no longer be re-ordered. With the new modelalready referenced in among iOS 5.1 beta software, as the Bluetooth 4.0 toting “AppleTV 3,1″, sources at Best Buy alerted 9 to 5 Mac to the fact that the existing device, launched in 2010, is now listed as “currently unavailable.” The tipster isn’t the only one, either. Best Buy online shows the Apple TV as not available for shipping, as is also the case at Target; Walmart has removed the Apple TV from its online store completely. It’s a similar story at other online retailers, with only existing stock left on-hand in stores seemingly available. International sales also seem limited, with retailers in the UK and Germany also showing either no supplies or small numbers. Apple’s own online store does still have stock, however. It’s possible a new Apple TV could debut at

iPad confiscated in China after Apple trademark legal loss

Image
Apple’s iPad 2 is reportedly being seized from stores in China, forcing retailers to hide their stock of the iOS slate, after Apple lost a trademark suit against Proview Technology over use of the name. The Chinese Administrations of Industry and Commerce (AIC) had confiscated 45 iPads as of 5pm local time, the Hebie Youth Daily reports, though there are claims that shoppers still looking for the tablet can get one if they ask. Some retailers have pulled all of their visible stock, it’s suggested, in an attempt to avoid seizure by the authorities. However, under-the-counter sales are still going ahead. Those stores which didn’t move quickly enough have had visible stock removed. Proview convinced Chinese courts that it held the iPad trademark back in early December 2011, having filed a suit the previous year. It filed the iPad trademark back in 2000, well before Apple’s tablet plans went public, and thus holds the rights to use the name within China. Apple launched the iPad 2 in China

Google TV YouTube app refreshed for better smart TV

Image
Google continues to refine its Google TV smart home entertainment platform, with a new YouTube app released that promises easier content discovery, better topic hubs and streamlined control for users streaming to their TV. The app – available in the Android Market on Google TV 2.0 boxes – introduces a new Discover feature that filters YouTube channels by categories, including cooking, comedy, science and gaming. There’s also a “From TV” channel for content pulled from broadcast. Each channel gets a new-style page, with easier access to playlists and individual videos. It’s also possible to subscribe to channels with a single click, while pressing up or down on your remote scrolls through related videos or other titles from the same user. Mid-playback, meanwhile, scrolling up or down shifts through the video information dialog, overlaid on top of the clip. This supports the usual thumbs up/thumbs down rating system, along with add-to-playlist and the comments dialog; that’s when havin

Saber Interactive CEO says Xbox 720 shouldn’t ban used games

Image
After what seemed to be a flurry of developer support over rumors that Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console might prevent used games from being played, a second major developer has come forward objecting that idea. And it’s a big one – Saber Interactive, the current developer of the Halo franchise. This comes after CD Projekt, developer of The Witcher 2, also slammed the anti-consumer idea. CD Projekt said that if a game doesn’t make a lot of money, it’s the developer’s fault. The guy who goes to GameStop to save a few bucks isn’t the one to blame. Now, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch is sharing a similar feeling. “I don’t think we should prevent people from playing used games. I understand why they would want to do it, but I think the approach should be different,” Karch said in a recent interview. Under the rumored Xbox 720 infrastructure, every game would be registered to one and only one Xbox 720 unit. Then, if a customer tried to put that disc in another system, even if it

Apple software exec accepts Grammy on Steve Jobs’ behalf

Image
Yesterday, ahead of tonight’s much more celebrated Grammy Awards telecast, the Record Academy held its ceremony for the annual Special Merit Awards. Perhaps the most noteworthy award was the one honoring the late Steve Jobs. Jobs was announced as a posthumous receipient of the award last year, celebrating his extraordinary achievements in the advancement of digital music distribution. At the very least, it was the most noteworthy award that people in our industry took note of. At yesterday’s ceremony, accepting the award was Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue. Cue had worked closely with Jobs for 15 years and was the one responsible for carrying out many of Jobs’s dreams and visions in the digital space. This is the second time a Grammy Award has been awarded to Apple’s achievements in music. In 2002, the entire company won a Technical Grammy. During his speech on behalf of the late Jobs, Cue said, “Accepting this award means so much to me because
