Facebook snags hacker Geohot

Image
iPhone hacker George Hotz – aka Geohot – is apparently now working at Facebook, though it’s unclear what his role at the social network entails. Best known for his hacks of the Apple iPhone, including unlocking SIM-locked handsets so that they can be used on other networks, as well as for being the target of a Sony lawsuit over PS3 modifications, Hotz confirmed his new role using his Facebook account. TechUnwrapped flagged up the news after Greenpois0n developer P0sixninja mentioned it in a video podcast – the relevant segment of which you can see below. Techmeme’s Gabe Riviera then spotted the update on Hotz’s Facebook profile. Understandably, speculation has begun over what, exactly, Geohot might be doing at Facebook. Two recently leaked projects which could tap into the hacker’s particular skills have made headlines recently: the “Project Spartan” HTML5 app store, which reportedly will use in-browser apps and Facebook Credits to take on Apple’s software distribution dominance, and t

Apple unlocking AT&T iPhone 4 handsets to sell contract-free

Image
Apple retail stores are repurposing locked AT&T iPhone 4 handsets to sell as unlocked, with the news that the checkout systems are able to redefine units as “Device Only.” According to 9to5Mac‘s source, staff at Apple stores are being advised that they can swap in AT&T phones for unlocked iPhone 4 units if they’re running low on stock levels. The AT&T handsets are obviously locked to the carrier, and intended to be sold subsidized and with a new, two-year agreement. However, if marked “Device Only” on the checkout system, when activated they will apparently also be unlocked for use on any GSM carrier. Apple began selling unlocked iPhone 4 handsets in the US on June 14, with the 16GB model priced at $649 and the 32GB model at $749. It’s not clear whether this is an indication that stock levels of the unlocked versions – which come in both black and white – are running low, or if it’s simply a useful tip for Apple retail employees. Once unlocked, the iPhone 4 can be used with

Dexter Season 6 Details

Image
There are still a couple of months before  Dexter returns to our screens but that doesn't mean that details for the sixth season are thin on the ground. New showrunner Scott Buck has shared with  Entertainment Weekly   information on new characters, plotlines and what mental state we will find Dexter in this year. So what mental and physical state will we find Dexter (Michael C. Hall) in? First of all it is a year on from last season and his cleansing relations with Lumen (Julia Stiles). We will see Dexter in a much better place than the dark period after Rita's (Julie Benz) death that he blamed himself for. The key point that Buck reiterates in this interview is that this year, we will see a Dexter that is much like how he was when we first met him in season one, but he is better than that: "Things are good for him. He’s very centered, strong and focused, much the same way he was in season 1, but now he knows so much more. He’s a much more self-assured person. A more evo

Tonight on Wilfred: Season Premiere

Image
Tonight sees the premiere of the new FX dark comedy  Wilfred , the bizarre but brilliant story of a man who sees a dog as a man in a dog suit. So what is the premise behind this quirky tale? Elijah Wood plays Ryan, a guy who is down on his luck who is about to start a boring job and who has been contemplating suicide. When asked by his neighbor Jenna (Fiona Gubleman) to watch her dog Wilfred this becomes a moment of salvation for him; instead of seeing Wilfred as a dog, he sees him as a man dressed in a dog suit. Wilfred is played by Jason Gann, who co-created the original Australian version of the series with Adam Zwar, which was based on a short film that the two had made. The series was a cult hit in Australia and ran for two seasons, when co-creator Zwar wanted to move on to other projects he gave his blessing to Gann to develop the series in the US. It has been adapted for FX by David Zuckerman ( Family Guy ,  American Dad ,  King of the Hill ) who appears to have stayed faithful

Pretty Little Liars Review: Separated, But Equally Scandalous

Image
Despite trying to follow their parents' wishes and not be seen with each other, the  Pretty Little Liars got a loud and clear answer from 'A' on their fickle charade... She (or he) wasn't having it. After last week's crazy return to our televisions, Pretty Little Liars  gave us more questions to ponder, but very little answers to have a conniption over. Some of those questions, such as where the hell is Ian (or his body), stayed in the forefront, while others got the week off to probably come back with the vengeance of a teenage girl scorned. First up, the central issue of the girls having to play anti-friends due to their therapist's suggestions to the parentals. You would think the Grown Liars would know that their daughters are still meeting with one another and in turn would resort to some serious extremes to make sure PLL club meetings be a thing of the past for the moment. Instead, there aren't any chained doors, new alarm systems, or barred windows t

Mad Men Star Jared Harris Open to Returning to Fringe

Image
Fans of great television probably know of Jared Harris. Not only is he a star of AMC's hit drama Mad Men  (he plays accountant Lane Pryce), but he had a recurring stint on the first season of the critically acclaimed FOX series  Fringe . There he played David Robert Jones, a terrorist who orchestrated several Pattern incidents before being cut in half by a closing portal between two universes. Earlier this month, I expressed my hope that season three's ending moments could spell a return for Harris to the series. Now, it seems, Harris would be more than willing to take a trip back to  Fringe . Now, it seems, he's willing to make the trip himself. Stating that he doesn't know about returning to  Fringe  "yet," Harris  affirmed to  I Am Rogue  that he still loves the sci-fi series, which is slated to return for its fourth season in the fall. "I love the show and I am a fan of it," Harris shared. "I've watched every single episode they've

DVD Review - The Far Pavilions

Image
It's hard not to compare  The Far Pavilions  to  Lawrence of Arabia . The 1984 HBO miniseries (in fact, the  first  HBO miniseries ever produced) owes a lot to the Best Picture of 1962. Both deal with British officers occupying a country - in  Pavilions 's case, India) - and both have the officers falling into moral quagmires between the British governments they serve and the native people whom they come to identify with. The only difference here, of course, is that the protagonist, Ashton Pelham-Martyn (Peter Cross), was born in India before being moved to England, and  The Far Pavilions  is his return trip. Naturally, there's a woman from his past that he falls in love with upon his return, and that's the crux of the story. But as their love unfolds, we're also treated to a pretty sweeping epic that's surprisingly timeless and feels absolutely classic. The story is decidedly generic, though it never feels too trite. The acting is great, featuring greats such
