Developers: an Android 2011 Retrospective

Image
When we look back at this year, we’ll think of it as the year of the birth of the dual-core mobile super chip, the double CPU processor becoming the status quo for a smartphone or tablet running Android, this the single most important thing to those who use the devices as tiny computers while the term “4G” dominates the memories of the masses, but it’s developers that mattered most. There’s no thinking about Android this year without recognizing that it’s still running alongside Apple’s iOS, the iPhone, and the iPad 2 as its primary competitors, and as its own user interface changes drastically, its competitors instead tweak functionality inside their already set-in-stone aesthetic. Then there’s the battles between manufacturers, carriers, and Android versions too, but none of this existed outside the underground of hackers, developers, and tweakers galore! The masses switched their Android versions from Froyo to Gingerbread on the whole, and by the end of the year we had Ice Cream S

Samsung Android 4.0 ICS update nixed for “Value Pack” proposition on Galaxy S and Tab

Image
Those of you pumped up by yesterday’s news that Samsung was reconsidering their decision to not update their original Galaxy S line and their Galaxy Tab original to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich may have reason to be a bit confused by the manufacturer’s most recent proposition: a “Value Pack” update that, while not entirely ICS, would bring many of the same features. This is what we’re hearing out of Asia as Daum drops the beats. For those of you on the original Galaxy S team or rolling with the original Galaxy Tab: does this sound like the news you were waiting for? While devices like the Galaxy S II and the newer Galaxy Tab models like the 10.1 and 8.9 will certainly get the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich within the first half of 2012 (or so we’ve been told,) we can expect less than that from the previous generation now. Samsung is now saying they’re considering what they’re calling a “Value Pack” which will be a software update bringing features like “improved web brows

Slot Mods crams a slot car track inside replica RCR 917 racecar

Image
I used to really like slot car tracks when I was a kid, but I hated having to put them up when I was done. A company called Slot Mods has an awesome slot car track that has very nice details on the track itself. The track has cars sitting in the paddock, trees, and cool crash barrier walls. The coolest part is that the track is hidden inside a car replica. The track is covered with a replica body shell from a 1971 RCR 917 racecar. It appears that the car is full size even. The real car participated in the 1971 12 hours of Sebring race. The company that makes them has options that the buyer can choose. Presumably, different tracks for the slot cars and different car shells are among the options. The car replica even has center lock wheels and tires that are worn from racing. The slot cars are 1/32 scale. If you are wondering how much the track costs, this is one of those if you have to ask things. You must email the company and they will tell you what it costs to commission the trac

Balls-o-steel race driver and navigator win race with Lamborghini on fire

Image
This is epic. A race driver named Jason White and his navigator were breaking in their new Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale at the 2011 Targa High Mountain race. Things were going well and they were flying by Porsches and other lesser rides on their way around the course. Not far from the end of the race the team noticed that their ride was on fire. You can see the video to get the teams full reaction. It boils down to “we are on fire and it’s pretty big, should we stop,” from the driver. The navigator says “nah, let’s go on and put it out at the top.” That is just what they did as they flew around the course with the entire rear end of the Lambo in flames. Not only did the team power on to the finish before worrying about the flames, they actually won the race. The driver noted that they didn’t know what made the new car catch on fire. He also says at one point they could actually feel the heat from the flames.

Windows Phone roadmap slips into the wild

Image
A newly leaked Windows Phone roadmap has surfaced that gives a rough time frame for the launch for the coming versions of the OS. According to the roadmap the expected Tango flavor of WinPo for lower end devices will be launching in Q2 2012. The roadmap is supposedly up to date as of October 2011. That is a few months back now and things change quickly in the tech world. Take these dates with a grain of salt. The roadmap also shows that Windows Phone Apollo will be launching in Q4 of 2012. Apollo is the update for the OS that is supposed to make the devices running Windows Phone more suitable for business users. Apollo is also said to be the code name for Windows Phone 8. That Q4 launch would make the OS about a year after Windows Phone 7.5 or Mango launched. Windows Phone 8 is expected to bring support for LTE and NFC plus lots more. What do you think about the coming Windows Phone updates? Will they help Microsoft be a contender in the smartphone realm?

PumPing Tap may be the most irritating design in history

Image
I think there has been enough talk over the years about vampire power or phantom power that we all know that a bunch of the devices in your home still draw power when you turn them off. This certainly wastes electricity and isn’t good for the environment. We have seen a bunch of products that have been designed to draw little power or no power when they don’t need it even when plugged in. Reducing phantom power is a good idea, but this PumPing Tap outlet concept is something that I can’t get behind. I can only imagine how irritating it would be to have the outlet pop your devices plug out of the socket each time you turn it off. This would be especially irritating if that socket was behind a desk or couch. The concept has a blue light around the outside of the plug when something is plugged in and using power. When the power draw stops, the ring turns red. Ten minutes after the plug is red a little circle pops out of the center of the outlet and pushes the plug out to stop power d

Apple TV/iTV rumor mill churns out more firms that may win supply contracts

Image
Yesterday I mentioned that the rumor mill was claiming that suppliers were getting ready to start gathering the materials needed to build the new Apple HDTV being called the iTV so far. Today more rumors have surfaced with sources telling DigiTimes that other major firms in Taiwan may win contracts to provide components for the iTV. The companies tipped to win contracts by the courses include TSMC, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, and Siliconware Precision Industries. The sources are claiming that Foxconn Electronics will be the likely source to win the final assembly contract for the iTV. While Foxconn is tipped to be winning the contract to assemble the AppleTV, the firm has also announced that it is expanding its production capability for smartphones in northern China. The factory in Zhengzhou will have its capacity increased from 200,000 daily units to 400,000 units. The workforce will increase from 100,000 to 200,000 people. Foxconn builds the iPhone for Apple.

Some Intel Ivy Bridge processors to debut on April 8 say sources

Image
We already know that the Intel Ivy Bridge processors are coming and that they are the follow-ups to the Sandy Bridge units already available. Not too long ago some pricing details on the Ivy Bridge parts leaked for us to look at. Today more rumors are surfacing about the Ivy Bridge processors. The source of the rumors that DigiTimes cites are PC makers in Taiwan. According to the sources, some of the processors will debut on April 8. Previously we had heard May was the launch date. The desktop processors that are fingered for that launch date include the Core i7 3770K, 3770, and 3770T along with the Core i5 3570, 3550, and 3450 parts. Pricing will run from $184 to $332 according to the sources. The Core i5-3470T will sell for $184 and is set to debut in May. Other parts coming in April include the budget Z77 processor for $48, the H77 at $43, the Z75 at $40, and the B75 for $37. Intel will be launching a very expensive notebook CPU called the Core i7-3920Qm in April at $1096 with t

Physicist builds Large Hadron Collider out of Lego

Image
I have seen plenty of photos of the Large Hadron Collider or LHC over the years and it is a very impressive piece of machinery. Apparently, a physicist named Sascha Mehlhase had some time not spent doing actual work to recreate the LHC using Lego bricks. It’s a very accurate representation as well. Mehlhase works at the Niels Bohr Institute. The LHC model built uses 9,500 Lego parts and cost the builder about 200 euros. The construction process was done on the weekends and is a 1:50 scale recreation. I wonder where the Lego Higgs boson particles are. The build took about 30 hours. The limits of my Lego capability are helping my kids build things using the instructions. It’s always cool to me when people can Lego freestyle something that turns out this good. Have you ever built you own bit of Lego awesome?

SETI to check moon for signs of aliens

Image
It wasn’t that long ago that SETI went offline after funding was pulled. Thankfully, the funding was raised and the search for aliens began again. Apparently, in talks about where to start searching for signs of alien life, the SETI team decided to start close to home. Paul Davies and Robert Wagner from Arizona State University want a crowd-sourced effort to search for artificial structures on the moon. The reasons for choosing the moon include the fact that it is so close and that it is able to hold traces of activity for a long time. You only have to look at photos like the one here of leftovers from the Apollo missions to see that features on the moon don’t change. The searching of the moon makes a bit of sense if you look at it the way the scientists on the project are. If the aliens could travel the vast distances between stars they could have used the moon as an observation post for checking us out. After all, we have only been able to go to the moon for a few decades. The te

Toyota Aqua hybrid debuts in Japan to fight Honda Fit

Image
Toyota has launched a new hybrid car in Japan that is aimed at the Honda Fit. The hybrid is called the Toyota Aqua in Japan and when it makes its way to the US the hybrid will be called the Prius C. The car will hit the US as a 2013 model. Toyota is claiming some really big fuel economy figures for the car at 83mpg. That is on par with some EVs that are out there. The car is also inexpensive with a price in Japan working out to $21,793 in the US. In Japan, the car racked up 83mpg on the JC08 test cycle and 94mpg on the official 10-15 test cycle. The car has a small 1.5L 4-cylinder engine under the hood with 72hp. The car uses an electric motor rated at 45kw giving the vehicle a combined power output of 98hp. The small car will accelerate from 0-60 in 10.7 seconds. The battery inside the car is a nickel metal hydride pack. Toyota hopes to sell 12,000 Aquas monthly at home. The car will come in three versions dubbed the L, S, and G. The high-end version will sell for $23,756. There w

Acer isn’t leaving tablet market according to founder

Image
Acer’s founder has stepped up and denied the rumors that have been circulating that the company will be leaving the tablet market. Acer’s founder Stan Shih has come forward and denied those rumors. Shih said that while the tablet market for Acer has been difficult it is not abandoning the market. Shih likened the process Acer is going through right now to the same teething issues the company had when it entered into the notebook market. Acer is shedding a bunch of its line though. It had previously announced that it would be cutting 2/3 of its product line moving into 2012. The company is focusing on products that are more profitable. Acer is also saying it has no plans to exit the smartphone business either. It hasn’t yet really competed in the smartphone realm. Acer will not be downsizing the personnel related to smartphones and tablets either. I would assume with a 2/3 cut n the product line some workers will be let go. Acer is hoping that the cuts will allow it to expand in the

Netflix users spend twice as much time viewing compared to Hulu viewers

Image
I have both Netflix and Hulu accounts. I rarely watch Hulu Plus anymore, the shows it has and the content just isn’t that great. Even when I do try to watch the videos just don’t stream as well for me as they do on Netflix. Hulu ends up constantly buffering and the video quality isn’t as good. I keep reminding myself to cancel the subscription but keep forgetting to do it. Apparently, I am not the only one that likes Netflix better than Hulu. ComScore has announced that people are spending twice as much time on Netflix compared to Hulu. Even when the price hike happened for Netflix, it was still well above the time spent on Hulu. Netflix uses in November spent a billion minutes total viewing the site. Hulu viewers together racked up 480 million minutes. Apparently, some of the issue that resulted in the vast difference in users between the sites has to do with the mix of free and paying subscribers that Hulu has whereas Netflix was always a pay service. I think it’s more basic than

YouTube Slam is like battle of the videos

Image
YouTube is the place that hoards of people go to find videos of whatever they are into at a particular time. Some of the videos end up going viral because they are cute or weird or for a variety of other reasons. Those viral videos can rack up huge numbers of viewers as well. YouTube has rolled out a new video experiment that it calls YouTube Slam. Slam pits two videos against each other and allows the users to vote for which video they think is the best in several categories. Slam has several categories of videos including comedy, cute, music, bizarre, and dance. Whoever the ultimate winner of the Slam turns out to be is featured on the leader board. The system also lets the voters earn points for predicting which video will be the most popular with the hoard. At the end of the week, players will be able to see how they measure up to the other people predicting the most popular videos. Users can subscribe to the Slam channels. This is something that YouTube cook

Apple to possibly debut completely redesigned iPhone in Fall 2012

Image
BGR has just reported that Apple is possibly debuting a completely redesigned iPhone in the fall of 2012, following the trend first set by the iPhone 4S, of new Apple products being launched later in the year, instead of mid-year releases. According to the report, the new iPhone will incorporate an aluminum back panel (similar to that of the iPad 2) rather than the glass found on the current iPhone models, the iPhone 4 and 4S. We have also learned that Apple is planning to use a rubber or plastic material — similar to the material used in the company’s bumper cases — that will be built into the new iPhone case. In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone (like the iPhone 3GS bezel) and it will serve two purposes. First, it will join the glass iPhone face with a new aluminum back plate. It will also cover a redesigned antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum without having to us

Google+ passes 62 million users, adding 625,000 new users daily

Image
It may be because of the brand appeal, the TV commercials, the Android 4.0 release, or the general holiday spirit (or rather, blatant commercialism) that Christmas brings, or an amalgamation of all these factors, but there is no doubt that the number of new user signups for Google+ each day has grown rather rapidly in the past several weeks. Google+ has apparently just passed the 62 million user mark, and adds about 625,000 new users daily, according to unofficial Google statistician Paul Allen. Allen’s explanation of his analysis: Each week my team from elance runs hundreds of queries on various surnames which we have been tracking since July. We revised our model based on the actual user announcements made by Google on July 13th and Oct 13th. Here is what the tracking shows so far: July 13 – 10 million August 1 – 20.5 million September 1 – 24.7 million October 1 – 38 million (Larry Page announced “more than 40m users” on Oct 13th) November 1 – 43 million December 1 – 50

Dropbox adds photo and video import support directly from your camera

Image
Dropbox has just introduced a new feature with their new “Experimental Forum Build” beta app for Windows, Mac and Linux, which now essentially enables users to automatically import photos and videos directly from your camera. The system starts the uploading process when a camera, phone, or memory card is connected to your computer. Your photos and videos will then be sent off to the cloud, or rather, the DropBox servers, becoming accessible by all your other Dropbox-supported devices. According to Wired’s Gadget Lab, Dropbox users have have already logged quite a few complaints over in the Dropbox forums. For example, some users may take so many pictures that they “don’t want them all clogging up their limited cloud storage”. This new feature also adds another level of complexity to the Dropbox app itself, when it’s already relatively simple to have a third-party app store chosen photos inside your Dropbox folder. On the flip side of things, anything that makes photo backup easier ca

Samsung, Sharp, and other LCD makers paying $553 million to settle price fixing claims

Image
LCD makers Samsung, Sharp and five other manufacturers have agreed to pay $553 million to settle a multi-state class action lawsuit accusing the companies of price fixing. The lawsuit alleged that the companies conspired to inflate prices for LCD displays used in TVs, notebook computers, and computer monitors between 1996 and 2006. A probe into allegations of similar anti-competitive activities among LCD manufacturers took place back in December 2006, which led to the several companies and execs pleading guilty and paying more than $890 million in fines. This latest settlement is to address claims by consumers as well as by eight states, including Arkansas, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New York, West Virgina, and Wisconsin. The companies involved include Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Epson, Chi Mei, HannStar, and Chunghwa. In addition to the fine, they will be required to engage in antitrust compliance programs and cooperate with ongoing prosecution of other companies that m

Apple wins another crucial multitouch patent

Image
Apple has won another crucial patent for its multitouch technology, as Patently Apple finds, that will add to its already deadly legal arsenal against Android competitors. The patent approved today involves oscillating signals and is one of the “200+ Patents for new inventions” that Steve Jobs first alluded to when the first iPhone debuted. This patent focuses on the oscillator signal and circuit of a touchscreen, technology that is integral to how users interact with a multitouch device. Previous resistive touchscreens can only recognize a single touch input no matter how many objects are touching the screen. Capacitive touchscreens can rely on oscillating signals to track inputs over a substrate but creating a precise ciruit-based oscillator is difficult. Apple’s patent provides a solution that uses calibration logic circuitry that compares signal oscillation against a reference signal and then accordingly tunes its clock frequency. This offers an accurate capacitive display that

Android and iOS see record breaking activations on Christmas day

Image
According to analytics company Flurry, Android and iOS saw a record breaking number of device activations on Christmas. The combined total reached 6.8 million devices on that single day, a 353 percent increase over the rest of the month, which averaged 1.5 million activations a day for the first 20 days of December. This new record number of activations is also a major boost up from the previous record of 2.8 million activations on Christmas day in 2010. However, Flurry does not break down the split between iOS and Android. Google’s Andy Rubin had recently said that Android activations were going beyond 700,000 a day, which leaves about a 50/50 split between Android and iOS for most of December. But it’s not clear whether the numbers were also split during the Christmas spike. Additionally, the number of apps downloaded increased by 125 percent over the rest of the month with 242 million apps downloaded between both platforms on Christmas day. Flurry expects about a billion apps to

Airtight app brings Apple’s AirPlay to Google TV

Image
A new app called Airtight has just been released to the Android Market that promises to enable your Google TV to receive content via Apple’s AirPlay wireless streaming technology. This appears to be the first time that a Google device is able to receive video streams via AirPlay rather than just transmitting content to other AirPlay enabled hardware. The Airtight app costs $0.99 and lets you stream non-DRM movies to your TV via your iPhone, iPad, or any other Airplay-enabled device. It works with the Logitech Revue or Sony devices with the latest Google TV update that supports Android Market. However, the app is still in beta and can only stream videos and photos at the moment. It doesn’t yet support features such as music and mirroring. It also isn’t sanctioned by Apple, which could take legal action to prevent Airtight from using AirPlay technology for Android devices.

Intel 32nm Medfield SoC leaks with specs and benchmarks

Image
There’s something about the brains of the machines we work with that makes us think really hard about how long it’ll be before they take over the earth – today we get to peek at Intel’s newest effort moving that plan forward with their 32nm process Medfield System on Chip, leaked here in both specifications and benchmarks. What you’ll be seeing here is the next processor set made for the mobile market, here made for smartphones and tablets galore more than likely inside 2012. You’ll find, thanks to VR-Zone, that this Medfield SoC takes the competition in NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8260 and slams their faces into the wall – of course that’s not all that happens in the fight. In this leak comes a 10.1 inch 1280×800 pixel resolution reference tablet which looks rather plain but runs an x86 processing core at 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM as well as Bluetooth, Wi-fi, and FM radio. This tablet is put through some benchmark tests including Caffeinemark 3. The Tegra 2 scored 7,5

Christmas Lights recycled into slippers in China

Image
If you live in North America, chances are you’ve had a good time purchasing, stringing, taking down and ball wrapping, and next year throwing away Christmas Lights – as the video in this post will show, those lights don’t always just go in a landfill, they get turned into nothing less strange than a pair of slippers! The video here shows a Chinese recycling factory that sits in the town of Shijiao, near Guangzhou, and they’ve got a yearly run-through of 20 million pounds of old Christmas lights per year. They chop them down, mush them up, and flip them out! Like any good environmentally sound group of manufacturers do, this group of workers takes Christmas lights for what they are: materials that can be used to make products! What they do is take the lights untangled into small enough sizes that they can be tossed into the shredders they’ve got on hand. When they are shredded, they’re turned into millimeter-sized particles and mixed up with water until they’re made into a mud-like su

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50k apps, here’s three anchors that matter

Image
When it comes to applications for the mobile platform, it’s essentially the same situation for any device ecosystem as it is for a mall: anchor stores are necessary to keep the whole structure active – and the same is true of the Windows Phone Marketplace which just this week hit 50,000 apps. This isn’t the highest amount of apps in a mobile market, not by a long shot, but with an environment for apps that is, as many Windows Phone fans will tell you, still developing, it’s certainly a milestone to be proud of. What you’ve got to keep this all anchored down is a set of apps that everyone wants, everyone needs! Let’s have a brief look at what those are. Over the past year there’s one brand that’s grown as a streaming media content name at such a speed and in such a way that no mobile device is complete without the ability to run the app that goes with it: Netflix. The Windows Phone forest of apps does include this mighty tree, and watching it grow with the rest of its relatives on iOS

The Pill iPod Nano 6G dock medicates your media needs

Image
There’s a way to turn any device into the masterpiece you always though it should be, and in no greater environment is this true than with the iOS suite of devices – quite evident here with The Pill for the 6th generation of iPod Nano. You’ve got your little display-toting machine plugged in to the middle of this pill, the pill itself being a stark red and white on either side, the speakers for the sound you’ll be blasting eschewing forth from either side with skill. This look like the key for the beat junkie in you? The Pill measures in at 147 x 48 mm, this making it still able to fit into your pocket – and your friends will be happy to see YOU when you waddle forth with heavy music jamming out of your pocket thusly. The creator of this device Gavio currently has it up on his webpage, but isn’t offering up pre-orders as of yet. Similarly, you aren’t able to purchase this device at the moment and no release details have been set in stone. On the other hand, the fact that you’ll be

Microsoft Canada starts Developer Movement, shows USA how to do it

Image
Though as a graphic designer by training, I’m not exactly keen on promoting contests to produce results in workers, it does seem like a pretty awesome idea here as Microsoft tries to push developers to make awesome apps for their platforms (including but not limited to Xbox360 and Windows Phone) up in Canada. What you’ve got here is a “Join the Developer Movement” contest in which Microsoft judges your developed apps as “quality”, and depending on how many you’ve got made until May 20th, you get rewards galore! Not only that, the first 200 people who register for the Developer Movement have the chance to get their AppHub account waived entirely! Though it’s not entirely clear what constitutes a “quality” application in Microsoft’s mind, the contest is clear enough: depending on if you create 1, 2, or 3 of these so-called quality apps, you get sweet prizes. You’ve got between when you’ve signed up and May 20th, 2011, to get your business in order, and a sweet apps you shall make. Have
