AMD Radeon HD 7970 Series GPU officially announced

Image
This week the AMD Radeon HD 7970 series graphics processor series has been released (for $549 on January 9th, if you’d like to know,) and its codename family “Southern Islands” has been detailed in full to show the world what the company has planned for GPU power throughout the next few years, starting right here at the next: 2012. In a set of affirmations by the group that’s about to unleash their newest set of GPU units on the world of gaming, AMD said that PC gaming software sales on the whole were over $15 billion USD in 2011 and are estimated to blow past $20 billion inside 2012. Because of this, and because AMD loves its gaming following out there in gameland, they’ve also re-affirmed their dedication to their “Gamers Come First” credo, as well as their Gamers Manifesto which says, quite simply: Enablement, Not Disablement. AMD also noted they’d continue their strong ties to gaming developers through 2012, this on top of supporting (in one way or another) all gamers, not just t

Steve Jobs honored with Grammy win for “significant contributions to music”

Image
So, the Recording Academy just announced today the recipients of its 2012 Special Merit Awards, with Steve Jobs being named a recipient of a Trustees Award for 2012 for “outstanding contributions to the industry in a nonperforming capacity.” The Trustees Award category is designed to bestow recognition on individuals who have made “significant contributions to music in areas other than performance”. Well, there’s no doubt that if anyone has had a significant contribution to music, it’s the Apple co-founder himself. The Recording Academy stated that “As former CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs helped create products and technology that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies, and books. A creative visionary, Jobs’ innovations such as the iPod and its counterpart, the online iTunes store, revolutionized the industry and how music was distributed and purchased. In 2002 Apple Computer Inc. was a recipient of a Technical GRAMMY Award for contributions of outstanding technic

Firefox 9 support for Android arrives on tablets

Image
Mozilla’s had a lot to put on their plate this week, from releasing a new beta version of their desktop web browser, to renewing a monumental (at least for themselves) search agreement with Google (and averting an impressive 84% loss in revenue in the process). Here’s something more to add to all that; an all-new version of Firefox (9) for Android, replete with a demo video from Mozilla which we’ve posted for all of you to check out after the break. Mozilla says on their official blog that “Firefox for Android leverages large tablet screen sizes and optimizes popular features for tablets. The Awesome Screen integrates Firefox Sync and makes it easy to access your browsing history, open tabs, bookmarks and saved passwords across desktop and mobile devices so you can type less and browse more.” Along with the newly revamped UI, you’ll also notice small bug fixes, and also a faster boot-time for the app itself. Check out the video demonstrating Firefox 9 provided by Mozilla, and if it

Yahoo reportedly to consider selling Asian assets

Image
Yahoo’s board of directors is reportedly considering a deal to sell all of its Asian assets, specifically, the bulk of the company’s prized holdings in the China’s Alibaba Group and Yahoo’s Japanese affiliate to their majority shareholders in a massive deal worth $17 billion, according to a report in The New York Times DealBook. Yahoo would allegedly still keep a 15 percent stake in Chinese internet group Alibaba, however. The company’s stock on the Nasdaq exchange jumped nearly 6 percent today on the Asian asset sale rumors, and currently sits at just about $16 a share after trading hours had closed. The former leading search engine’s company board is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss the sales of its stakes in Chinese internet company Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan, claimed sources close to the New York Times. If the company decides to go along with the deal, it could possibly choose to reject investment proposals by Silver Lake and TPG Capital, stated the same sources. However

Here’s why Google+ shouldn’t work, but does, for now

Image
Just a few months ago, inside the summer of 2011, we saw the birth of Google’s own utterly mystifying social networking site Google+, complete with an interface that resembled not one, but all of the rest of the social media sites combined – what we’ve seen since are hundreds of combatant posts yelling at one another about how Google+ is either growing rapidly or suddenly petering out. There are numbers that can prove both if you don’t pay attention to the other, that much is true. What I want to tell you today is why I think what’s GOING to happen almost certainly WILL. Let me tell you an epiphany I had earlier today: the reason Apple works and is more enticing than Windows for masses of consumers is that OS X is a tool that tells you what it can do and how you can use it, while Windows is just a tool. Windows Phone is catching on to this idea, and Android certainly had the idea right from their start as well, but iPhone is without a doubt based on this idea implicitly. The same is

Onkyo announces world’s first A/V Receivers with InstaPrevue and MHL support

The highly popular Home Theater rocking company Onkyo today has just announces the worlds first A/V Receivers that will have full capability for both Silicon Image’s new InstaPrevue feature, as well as MHL (mobile high definition) support. Model numbers and specifics were not mentioned although we’ll be seeing plenty at their CES unveiling in January. They are aiming to have a successful year in 2012 and with this announcement they are about to get off to a great start. The technology behind MHL isn’t extremely new and has been added to many smartphones and tablets throughout 2011. MHL is a rapidly growing mobile HD audio/video connectivity standard similar to HDMI that allows up to 8 channels of audio and full uncompressed 1080p video to be streamed over a 5-pin micro-USB/MHL port. What’s even better is Onkyo has added power output to the MHL standard on their AVR’s to allow devices to charge at the same time for uncompromised audio/video quality, and battery life. Silicon Image’s

Sony Ericsson LT28at AT&T Android phone leaked, 13 megapixel photos included

Image
There’s reportedly a device on the way from Sony Ericsson and about to be carried by AT&T which has LTE connectivity, a 4.55-inch 720p display, and a 13 megapixel camera on the back. If that wasn’t enough, this device is set to be Sony Ericsson’s “big push” into the United States with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and will more than likely be revealed at CES 2012. This leak comes in two bits, one of them in an “End Product Detail” one-sheet from what appears to be deep inside Sony Ericsson, the other a set of 13 megapixel photos taken with the device’s camera. You’ll find information outside the main details not lacking a bit if you’ll be believing what the sheet says, it showing this XPERIA device to be running what they’re calling “tablet capacity” specs, that being what’s listed above in addition to what we’ve come to expect from a high-end device: Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, single LED flash, WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual microphones, and a whole new interface (though details in that rega

Sony uses Wedding Invite site for CES 2012

Image
If you’ve ever been in the position we’re in as publishers headed to the Consumer Electronics Show for our umpteenth time in a row at the start of 2012, you know there’s one whole heck of a lot of invites headed our way – thats why if a group wants to stand out, they’ve got to be unique – that’s just what Sony’s done with no less than a wedding e-vite for that very purpose. What this wedding is supposed to be is a tie between Internet and TV (by Bravia), and the whole shebang is here, photos, “about us”, and everything in between. Not that we weren’t going to go see Sony at the show, but we’re doubly excited to attend now! When you send out a wedding invite, especially for a relatively fake one like the one we’ve got going on right here, you need to stick to the basics. Thats why their letter starts with the following introduction: Our special day is almost here. We’re so excited we can hardly stand it. On this site, you’ll find all kinds of info about this special marriage. How we got

Lamborghini Murcielago won by man in Utah, crashed same day

Image
It’s not every day that a man wins a lime green Lamborghini automobile anywhere in the world, much less in Utah, and even less likely is the very real event that happened less than 6 hours after mister David Dopp took his brand new machine out for a spin: he spun out. Crashing your brand new automobile stings pretty badly, though whether it hurts more to crash a car you paid for or one you won in a contest – Dopp has firsthand experience with the latter. Would you feel terrible if you scratched that ever-loving electric exterior? The vehicle this fellow won was the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster, the contest one titled “Joe Schmo to Lambo” and hosted by a chain of gas stations by the name of Maverik. Having a peek at this winning photo showing Dopp next to his new auto holding the gigantic YOU WON sign makes us all the more depressed that he likely hit some black ice with it very soon after. Dopp reported to the police that though he was only driving 40-50 miles per hour, he l

Is your PlayStation Vita fixed?

Image
When a gaming company apologizes for a device they’ve released, you know good and well that they’re at the mercy of their customers – this is just what’s happened with Sony’s PlayStation Vita not one week after its release in Japan, and a firmware fix does appear to be on the way. Reports surrounded the launch of 300,000 device sold in just the first weekend of its release, and since then (three days, approximately), complaints about unresponsive touchscreens, freezes, and crashes have mounted to a level that Sony’s found it necessary to offer up an apology. Future users should take comfort in the idea that this may well only be a temporary set of issues, mind you, which should be fixed up in time for 2012 to roll around – our question for you current users is this: are you having troubles right this minute? While some have said they’re experiencing similar problems to those described in the Japanese release of this device, it is only the Japanese PR who have had to apologize and pro

Steve Jobs bronze statue unveiled in Budapest, Hungary

Image
This week the statue of Steve Jobs in Budapest you may have heard of has been officially unveiled, looking much like a man on a mission, complete with his patent-perfect set of jeans and turtle-neck, all in one color. Erected by Hungarian software company Graphisoft and designed and sculpted by sculptor Erno Toth, this monument is the first in what’s sure to be a long line of statues complimenting the life of the late software powerhouse. Graphisoft wants the world to know that they appreciate everything Jobs did for them, including inspiration, but not least of all cash and computers. Photo credit for the shot above goes to Laszlo Balogh who took the photo for Rueter’s original story straight out of Budapest. The group spoke with Graphisoft Chairman Gabor Bojar who mentioned the work by Toth to be a dedication to the man who represented a revolution which, as he said in so many words, “can only be compared to the discovery of writing.” Bojar spoke highly of Jobs for his contribution

Android team wishes you a Santa-laden Galaxy Nexus Holiday

Image
There’s a video out there today by the name of Happy Holidays – from Android, which contains spirits being made bright, laughing all the way, and Santa himself, not to mention the brand new Samsung Galaxy Nexus making everyone’s noses glow with delight. Of course there’s no way this is a response to Santa using Siri, right? It really doesn’t matter, what matters is that this commercial is completely lovely and makes for a warm cup of hot chocolate directly from Google’s Android headquarters where though it doesn’t often snow, it certainly did this year. You’ll find Android figurines galore, the Galaxy Nexus showing off Santa making a call, the original Motorola XOOM making the rounds in the offices of our friendly Android developers. Inside the Santa’s Loot frame you’ll find no less than the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 sitting behind glass, the special edition Snowman Android figurine holding on tight, and a subsequent scene with two fellows in blue and white pod seats have them

BlackBerry PlayBook gets Angry Birds, and there was much rejoicing

Image
The BlackBerry PlayBook isn’t exactly one of mobile’s greatest success storied, and RIM’s attempt at making BlackBerry function as a tablet-sized OS hasn’t quite taken off yet the way they’d planned in the beginning, but all that is set to change amid news this week that finally, at long last, Rovio has released Angry Birds for the device. And not just one game, three! You’ll now be able to download Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio from BlackBerry App World for your PlayBook, just in time for the holidays! You new owners of the BlackBerry PlayBook who picked one up for $199 as well as all you old-school owners who blasted your pocketbooks for the chance to own the business-class tablet for yourselves early on will be glad to know that the most popular game in the whole mobile universe is now available for you, too. The only downside here is that each of these games will cost you $4.99 apiece. Luckily though this means you won’t have to mess with advertisements th

Gracenote MoodGrid promises in-car mood-matched track picking

Image
This year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Gracenote MoodGrid was revealed inside a Mercedes-Benz F125 research vehicle, this music-based bit of technology promising to change your automotive experience by matching your mood with tracks that’ll do their best to compliment it. MoodGrid will allow the music in your car experience slick as a whistle with one-touch and/or simple voice commands, this improving both your ease in using the car’s stereo and your safety in doing so. This is going to be perfect for those of you who’d normally be tapping on your iPods while carrying a hot cup of coffee and an Egg McMuffie in the other hand while driving with your feet on the regular. As an alternative to scrolling through your tracks galore, MoodGrid will make selections based on your mood, be it dark, positive, calm, energetic, or whatever else you might want to enter in. Mood characteristics are mapped along songs that you yourself own and is able to access these songs through Cloud-based music se

Microsoft: CES 2012 will be our last

Image
Microsoft has announced that its CES 2012 appearance will be its last, with no plans to hold either a keynote nor run a booth at the show in the future. “Our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing” the company said today, ending a near 20-year partnership with CES organizers CEA. Previous CES keynotes have seen Microsoft attempt to carve a niche for itself in the consumer electronics space, for instance CEO Steve Ballmer attempting to drum up enthusiasm for Windows 7 on tablets with the HP slate back at CES 2011 in January. Windows 8 is likely to be the centerpiece of the CES 2012 keynote, as Microsoft prepares its next-gen OS to enter a battleground analysts suspect it may be far too late to. “Are we doing something because it’s the right thing to do, or because “it’s the way we’ve always done it”?” Microsoft apparently asked itself, before deciding its time at the Consumer Electronics Show was almost at an end. ”We’ll continue to participate

Yahoo thinks everything you read should be shared, that you should be comfortable with it

Image
If you’ve been a part of Facebook through the most recent round of updates that’ve included what they’ve dubbed“Frictionless Sharing”, you know that many connected apps are now demanding that everything you experience through them should also be shared with all of your contacts – when asked by TechCrunch whether or not this was ruining users ability to curate what’s shown in their day to day, Yahoo’s Mike Kerns had some disturbing things to say. The conversation came about amid Yahoo’s announcement that Facebook’s Frictionless Sharing experience had brought them the auto-sharing of 1 million articles over a 2 month period, this leading to 500,000 daily referrals to their site. In response to this success, Yahoo has released a notifications system across their sites, this showing off content activity in a similar way to Facebook. Kerns basically tells TechCrunch that kids these days like to share, and should just suck it up. To be fair, his exact words are a bit different than that, but

Irish privacy commissioner calls on Facebook for better user controls

Image
Facebook can’t catch a break these days when it comes to privacy, but when you become the gatekeeper for info on hundreds of millions of users, that’s hardly surprising. The latest in a long line of VIPs to sound the whistle is the Irish Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawkes. The BBC reports that he’s asked Facebook to implement a series of changes giving users greater control over how their private information is used on Facebook, and who has access to it. Hawkes’ concerns mostly center around a lack of transparency between Facebook and the web apps that run on the platform. He wants Facebook to inform users on exactly how their data is used by apps, who has access to it, and then give them the power to remove personal information from multiple databases. The request extends to Facebook developers and advertisers – ideally, users would be able to press a button and remove, say, their work history from Facebook, all Facebook apps and all its adverting partners.

Sony Ericsson details Android 4.0 upgrades: Kick off March 2012

Image
Sony Ericsson has detailed its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans, with the roll-out of Android 4.0 expected to hit the XPERIA arc S, XPERIA neo V and XPERIA ray first, from the end of March or the beginning of April 2012. The company has promised to upgrade all of its current devices to Ice Cream Sandwich, though it may be near the middle of next year before some users actually see the updated software. More details after the cut. As of the end of April or early May, Sony Ericsson will begin pushing updates to the original XPERIA arc, as well as the XPERIA PLAY, XPERIA neo, XPERIA mini and mini XPERIA pro, and the XPERIA active. The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will also be upgraded in the same period. It’s worth noting that, just because the upgrade begins in certain months, doesn’t mean all users will receive it at once. Instead, Sony Ericsson will be pushing ICS out in a staggered fashion, with each upgrade cycle expected to take a number of weeks. There’ll also be the poten

Google Voice for iPhone with multi SMS user capability

Image
Google has announced and update for the iPhone app for Google Voice. The updated app brings a lot of new features to the smartphone when used in the WiFi Google Voice service. The latest version of the app is1.4.0.2372 and it adds some of the features that a bunch of users have been asking for. One of the big ones is the ability to send text to multiple recipients. The multiple recipient texting also has contact autocomplete. The app now has spiny integration support to send all calls to the native dialer when integrated with Sprint. The text field now has multiple lines and character counting. The app also gets single touch copy/paste as well. As always using the app, you can connect to people via WiFi calling using your iPhone if you have loot in the account.

Hajime Research at work on a giant 13-foot tall robot

Image
Giant robots creep me out. You never know when they will go nuts and try to wear your head as a hat. The folks over at Hajime Research Institute are at work on a giant robot that stands about 13-feet tall. Why they need such a giant robot is beyond me. Perhaps they are looking to start a robot fighting league or something. The man behind the giant robot is building up to a really, really big bot. Apparently he wants to build a Gundam that actually moves around. The first robot built by Hajime Sakamoto was 7-feet tall, the latest is 13-feet tall and eventually he will build a 26-foot tall bot. The ultimate goal is to build a 59-foot tall bot that is the size of a Gundam suit. That sounds pretty cool and all. I’d rather see a full size Mad Cat personally. Check out the video below to see his interim 13-foot tall bot in action. It looks interesting; I can only imagine a giant 60-footer moving like that.

Jell-O Pudding machine shamelessly denies kids a treat

Image
Jell-O has a new pudding machine that won’t serve kids. Why it won’t serve kids is unknown. We can assume that no one under adult height is allowed to partake the puddiny goodness that is Jell-O pudding. The machine is automated and has an eye on it that looks like the CBS logo to me. The machine hands out samples of pudding. The face recognition is created with assistance from Intel and it looks for facial features that determine your age. The machine can sense you height and won’t work if you are a kid. It can tell what gender you are and sense if you are smiling as well. It doesn’t store photos or any other information that it uses for the facial recognition. The marketing stunt by Kraft is apparently being undertaken for the “gee-whiz” factor. Pudding just screams high-tech to me. I guess the not putting out for kids bit is to ensure that the parental units responsible for buying are getting the Jell-O Pudding message.

WD TV Live and TV Live Hub get VUDU and iPhone remote

Image
Western Digital has been offering its streaming media players the WD TV Live and The WD TV Live Hub for a while now. The last time the company issued an update was when Spotify came to the devices in October. WD has now announced that it has added a new service to both devices and has a cool new remote app that owners of the TV Live devices will appreciate. The media players already have access to big streaming services like Netflix, Hulu Plus and others. The new additions include VUDU, Snagfilms, XOS College Sports, SEC Digital Network, Comedy Time, and Watch Mojo. Most of those other than VUDU are little known and may not be that appealing. One of the coolest new announcements for users is that the WD TV Remote has launched for both of the devices. The app allows the user to turn the iOS device including the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad into a compatible remote control for the streaming devices. Right now only iOS is supported with the app, but WD is working on an Android version

T-Mobile USA faces $9bn bill to bring network up to scratch

Image
T-Mobile USA may take away a “record high break-up fee” from AT&T’s failed takeover bid, but the carrier still faces a roughly $9bn spend if it wants to compete in the US market. Despite receiving a chunk of AT&T’s spectrum covering 50m people, analysts warn that owner Deutsche Telecom will have to spend three times the $3bn fee from Ma Bell on improving the network and acquiring further spectrum. That will likely mean dreary prospects for investors, Businessweek reports, facing reduced dividends after next year. The $9bn figure has come from RBC Capital Markets analyst Jonathan Atkin, but carrier CEO Rene Obermann has refused to countenance shareholder payout cuts for 2012. Investors will get an annual dividend of at least €0.70, he confirmed this week, while Deutsche Telekom has reiterated its intention to buy back €1.2bn in shares over the next three years. “Achieving growth is very, very difficult, that’s why the shares need another attractor … achieving growth is very

Olympus HQ raided over $1.7bn fraud

Image
Olympus has officially confirmed that Japanese prosecutors have raided its offices and the home of one of the former company executives that knew about the fraud the company was found to have committed. It has come to light that Olympus had for years hidden investment losses using questionable practices and acquisitions. The prosecutors that raided the Olympus HQ are working in conjunction with police and financial regulators. Cityam reports that a joint investigation of police and financial regulators is rare. Olympus has admitted to the questionable practices and the company is now looking for buyers and any other means to remedy the situation. Fujifilm has been tipped as one of the parties interested in buying Olympus. The Tokyo high rise raided by the prosecutors is the HQ for three Olympus subsidiaries that were purchased under the scheme to hide losses. The investigation intensified after a panel of experts that Olympus hired to look into the allegations found that two former sen

Hennessey Performance Crams 805hp into Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

Image
I think that a lot of people that are into cars will agree that there is something to be said about a sleeper. The sleeper is the sort of car or truck that doesn’t look fast and then sucks the paint off the car in the lane next to it when it’s go time. Sleeper certainly fits the Hennessey Performance HPE800 Twin Turbo Jeep. The lowered stance and sleek bodywork hint that something is not natural about the SRT8 after Hennessey gets a hold of it. The HPE800 takes the Jeep 6.4L Hemi V8 and punches it out to 7.0L displacement and then straps a pair of turbos to the mill and puts down 805hp and a gargantuan 823 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. With that kind of power on tap, you might expect the car to have a lot of low end, and it does. The jeep can hit 60mph from a standstill in 3.1 seconds. It also gets a lowered suspension, 15.1-inch Brembo brakes all around, special wheels, and a beefed up transmission and torque converter. All the performance the Jeep delivers is far from cheap;

Nokia begins Belle roll-out; Updates from Feb 2012

Image
Nokia has begun shipping updated versions of the N8, C7 and C6-01 with Nokia Belle, aka Symbian Belle with a newly fettled UI, while an upgrade program for existing owners will begin in February 2012. China will be the first to get the updated new phones, the company says, with the rest of the world following suit. Those who have already bought a Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7 or Nokia Oro will have a couple of months at least to wait, however. This isn’t likely to go down well with Nokia fans, who saw similar delays in updates when Symbian Anna was released earlier in the year. Several complained that Nokia was prioritizing availability for new owners and leaving loyal users hanging. Nokia Belle is a considerable improvement over the Symbian interface so far, as we discovered in our Nokia 700 review back in October. An Android-style notifications bar, “squircle” iconography, improved and more flexible widgets, and six homescreens are all included.

OnStar shows off in-car video chat and video streaming

Image
Somewhere in Washington, a lobbyist wanting to remove all forms of distraction from our vehicles is having a seizure right now. OnStar is showing off a new system that is designed to stream video chats and calls to your vehicle using 4G LTE technology. If using a hands free calling system is too much of a distraction in the eyes of the NTSB having a video call going in the car is going to cause some strokes at safety HQ. The OnStar video call system for vehicles was shown off last year as a preview and was in conjunction with Verizon. At CES 2012, OnStar will again be showing the system off, this time the voice chat will be in a Volt. OnStar has tipped that the system will support cloud streaming of information and entertainment. The saving grace may be that the system is being pushed for back seat passengers. The hard tech specs for the system aren’t offered. There are two potential ways that streaming of this sort could go down. One is that the car could connect with a smartphone

Verizon 3G/4G data suffers second downtime [Update: It's back!]

Image
Verizon Wireless is experiencing widespread data network problems across the US, customer reports have suggested, with both 3G and 4G service down in many locations. The carrier’s forums are abuzz with frustrated smartphone and tablet users, suffering the second significant outage in less than a month. The carrier is yet to give any suggestion as to what may have caused the outage, or indeed publicly confirm the problems. Downtime does not appear to be consistent across all areas, though a brief glance at the support forums suggests locations in California, Ohio, Michigan, New York and more have been affected. Bandwidth for data has been high on Verizon’s agenda in recent weeks. The company has agreed several acquisitions of AWS spectrum from cable providers, including a $3.6bn deal with Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House, and grabbing Cox’s spectrum for $315m. We’re waiting to hear back from Verizon as to what the issue might be and whether there’s a timetable for it to be addresse
