Aust win toss, send NZ in to bat

Image
Australia's captain Michael Clarke won the toss and sent New Zealand in to bat on a green surface on day one of the second Test in Hobart. The visitors suffered a serious blow on match morning, losing Daniel Vettori to left hamstring tightness that he aggravated in the morning warm-up. His place in the XI has been taken by the young left-armer Trent Boult, meaning New Zealand will have an all seam bowling attack. Vettori's loss is as significant for what it does to New Zealand's batting as its bowling, for the laft-arm spinner has been among the team's most consistent Test run-scorers in recent times. Clarke's team is unchanged from Brisbane, after the hosts chose not to bolster their bowling with the allrounder Daniel Christian, who is carrying the drinks. James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc will attempt to exploit early life in the surface with support from the spin of Nathan Lyon. This means the opening batsman Phillip Hughes gets another chance to s

England will be 'real test' - Afridi

Image
Shahid Afridi is expecting England to be a "real test" for Pakistan when they arrive in UAE next month although Pakistan's recent form against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will leave them in good heart ahead of the opening Test in Dubai on January 17. On the eve of their Test series against Bangladesh, Pakistan have won every trophy that has been available to them since sharing the Tests against West Indies, in the Caribbean, last May. However, that has included success against lower-ranked opponents including Ireland, Zimbabwe and now a struggling Bangladesh. Afridi won't be part of the Test team having retired from the format but is back as a key member of the limited-overs outfits and is aware that the visit of England will be step up from their recent opposition. England are ranked No. 1 in both Tests and Twenty20 although remain mid-table in 50-over cricket following their 5-0 whitewash against India. "Winning (throughout the year) gave us a momentum and moral i

Panesar well placed for recall

Image
England will name their Test squad to face Pakistan in UAE on Friday as they embark on the challenge of maintaining the No. 1 ranking. In 2011 they played eight Tests, winning six and drawing two, but in 2012 that number swells to 15 so the much-vaunted depth of England's resources will be tested again. A mark of England's success in climbing the rankings has been how seamlessly players have slotted in when changes have been made through form or injury, Chris Tremlett and Tim Bresnan being the stand-out examples. The players who are currently outside a likely first-choice eleven are vital to the make-up of the squad. If the selectors follow the same pattern as for Australia they will favour those players ready to step up to Test level at a moment's notice rather than those with potential in the future. The England Lions trips of the subcontinent will allow those players on the fringe to play regular cricket in case reinforcements are required. The key position is which spin

'I was not expecting 200' - Sehwag

Image
Virender Sehwag, who slammed a record-setting 219 against the West Indies in Indore, has said that he thought a big score was there for the taking at the Holkar Stadium, but he did not expect to make a double-hundred. "I was telling myself and Gautam Gambhir that if we batted with a little patience, we could score a big one here," Sehwag told NEO Cricket in between innings. "The wicket is good to bat on, the outfield is fantastic and the boundaries are 50 yards. If we just show some patience and look to bat 30 overs, we can score some runs. But I was not expecting 200." The first time the double-century crossed his mind, he said, was during the batting Powerplay between the 35th and 40th overs, but he said that he did not change his game as he got closer to the landmark. "I was playing my shots throughout the innings. I thought [about] it [the double-century] when I was batting in the batting Powerplay and thought, 'If I just bat this Powerplay, maybe I'

Ballistic SG Case for Epic 4G Touch Hands-on Review

Image
Now we don’t often review cases for much of anything here on SlashGear, but when I saw this bulky masterpiece of a rubber and plastic prison for the Epic 4G Touch, I knew I had to take a closer peek at it. The full name of this case probably wins the war for long names of cases since its host has the big hunk of it: Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch Ballistic SG. How’s that ring your bell for a shelf name? Have a quick look with yours truly at this massive case and see why they put an exclamation point after the cover’s “DROP PROTECTION!” This case has what Ballistic says is three layers of hard and soft plastic protection plus extra large corners for those most dangerous of falls. What this means in the short run is that it’s not going to be as easy to put your phone in your pocket after this case is applied and surrounding it in its big squishy, rubbery hug of protection. What it means in the long run is that you’re going to have a tough time busting your device in the everyday swing

Google Currents iPad 2 Review

Image
This week Google launched an application for both iOS and Android by the name of Google Currents, made to turn users’ internet news source reading experiences on their mobile devices into something beyond enjoyable, something easy to manage too – what we’ve got for you here is a closer look at the iPad version of this application. What you’ll find different about this app compared to the rest is scale and applicability – there are some limits to being on an iOS device running a Google-made application, but they are few. Instead what we’ve got here is a lovely bit of organization making the reading of even the most aesthetically displeasing blogs a sight to behold.

Fujitsu and Suvolta reveal ultra low voltage RAM

Image
Fujitsu and SuVolta have partnered up to develop a new transistor technology that would cut chip power consumption in half without compromising performance. With this technology, SRAM chips could operate at ultra-low voltages of 0.4V, which is less than half of power consumption levels in chips today. SuVolta calls this new technology DDC for Deeply Depleted Channel. The technology could be making its way very soon to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets where systems-on-a-chip (SoC) technologies are aggressively competing to keep down power consumption, while providing greater performance. The current mobile landscape is dominated by ARM chips with Intel pushing its way in, but SuVolta argues that its DDC technology has several advantages over Intel’s in the areas of cost and efficiency. The DDC technology is part of SuVolta’s PowerShrink platform and devices utilizing the SuVolta technology are expected to reach the market by the second half of 2012.

Exmobaby and AT&T offer you baby monitoring via phone, tablet, and PC

Image
Exmovere has partnered with AT&T to offer parents of newborns a new way to monitor their babies using today’s latest gadgets. The company offers a patented baby pajama called the Exmobaby that measures critical vital signs and transmits this data wirelessly to the parent’s smartphone, tablet, or PC. The biosensors in the Exmobaby pajama measures vital signs such as heart rate, skin temperature, moisture, and movement. The data is then sent intermittently at regular intervals to the designated smartphone, tablet, or PC via AT&T’s wireless network. The data is also used to interpret a baby’s emotional state and sends alerts when a baby requires attention. The Exmobaby system gives parents or caregivers useful biophysical data to monitor infants and help bring peace of mind to new parents. However, the device does not offer diagnosis or treatment and the availability and price have not been announced yet.

Google Currents available internationally via hacked download for Android

Image
Not able to wait for the action for more than an hour after the races have started, hackers at XDA Developers Forums have already loosened the reigns on Google Currents so that everyone, including those users outside the USA, are able to use it. This week – just a short time ago today, to be exact, Google released their first multi-platform news reading application by the name of Google Currents – inside users will find a lovely stark white setup where they can read all their favorite news sources from the internet with the greatest of ease, just so long as they’re in the USA. Until now, of course, when you can download the APK for Android without a hitch. While there may well be a patch to do away with your ability to use this application outside the USA once Google finds that their cutoff has been re-glued together, you can explore the fun and fine world of Currents right this second via the download link. User Shenye over at XDA Developers Forums has kindly provided the .apk file fo

Nintendo 3DS users get free Boingo Wi-Fi access

Image
Nintendo and Boingo forged a partnership that will offer Nintendo 3DS users free Wi-Fi access at 42 airports in North America where Boingo provides wireless hotspots. Unlike the yet to be released PS Vita, the Nintendo 3DS does not offer a cellular version and has relied on Wi-Fi connections for surfing the web, downloading games and videos, and to access the Nintendo Zone for promotional offers, coupons, and game previews. The Nintendo 3DS already has access to free WiFi at various locations, including AT&T’s hotspots as well as at Best Buy. But the addition of 42 airports can certainly be appreciated by families planning to travel this holiday season. The airports supported will include Chicago’s O’Hare, New York’s JFK, and Houston’s George Bush airports. “With the holiday season approaching, more leisure travelers and families with children will fill our airports and have access to our hotspots,” said Colby Goff, senior vice president of strategy and business development for Boi

ZTE plans high-end smartphones for the US in 2012

Image
Chinese phone maker ZTE has expressed its plans to introduce high-end smartphones for the US market sometime in mid-2012. The company has been more well known for its low-end devices such as those offered contract-free through Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless, and MetroPCS as well as from major carriers such as AT&T. In an interview in Hong Kong with the Wall Street Journal, ZTE’s North American president, Lixin Cheng, revealed that the handset maker is planning to offer a high-end smartphone compatible with 4G LTE networks that would arrive sometime near the middle of next year. Cheng believes that the US will be the largest market for ZTE’s handsets by 2015. The high-end ZTE smartphone is expected to have features similar to the iPhone but priced slightly below it. Despite being much lesser known, ZTE has been seeing significant growth, having grown to a 5 percent share of global cellphone shipments in Q3 of this year. It’s cellphone shipments (including both smartphone and feature

CompactFlash Association announces XQD as next generation for high-end camera memory cards

Image
Just when you think you’ve got all your memory card problems figured out, BAM, along comes the CompactFlash Association with an announcement that it has adopted a brand new specification and format called XQD to replace what some (of course) call the too-venerable CompactFlash memory card we’ve been using for a while now in our high-end cameras. This new XQD format is a PCI Express-based memory card that’s both smaller and faster than the current CompactFlash format cards. XQD is also said to offer significant benefits over the competition – that competition of course being Secure Digital (aka SD)’s SDHC and SDXC cards. Though this newer card has essentially the same thickness as the CF card, it is 38.5 x 29.8 x 3.8mm and takes on the shape of what appears to be a golden rectangle – quite nice to look at, yes? Much better than that nasty old fat rectangle we’ve been using, yuck! This card is based on PCI Express instead of SD’s PCMCIA standard, this offering up a base maximum transfer

Google Currents: Digital magazine for iOS and Android

Image
Google Currents has been officially launched, a digital magazine for iPad, iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets delivering full-length articles from over 150 different publishing partners. Optimized to suit phones and slates, Currents offers text, audio, photos and videos, including offline support, as well as the ability to load users’ own Google+ and Google Reader accounts along with RSS, video and photo feeds to consume your own customized content. There’s also a focus on discovering new content, with a Trending section that brings new stories to the fore.  Each hour, Google Currents builds a set of editions tracking the most recent trending stories across various categories, including world, entertainment, sports, and science. Each trending story includes related articles, videos and pictures. As you’d expect, there’s comprehensive social networking integration, with the ability to share out your favorite stories, photos and videos via Google+, Twitter, email and other method

Twitter redesign revealed by Chris Davies

Image
Twitter has launched a comprehensive revamp of its interface, updating its web UI, along with the free iOS and Android clients, in an attempt to speed navigation and encourage multimedia use. Previewed at fly.twitter.com, the new system offers four sections – home, connect, discover and me – with the same UI carried across the browser, mobile browser and app versions. In addition to basic “@” replies there’s a greater emphasis on what the people you’re following are clicking on, following, resharing and Tweeting about, with Interactions and Mentions showing conversations and more. The new Discover section pulls together Twitter Stories and trends, showing a more global overview of what’s happening on the 140-character social network. Hashtags and search are also found in this new section, along with suggestions of people to follow, and the more you use Twitter the more accurate the content suggestions are. Finally, there’s the new “Me” section, with lists, favorites, followers, photos

Sony says PS Vita allows multiple PSN accounts

Image
Following reports earlier this week that Sony’s upcoming PS Vita was limited to only one PSN account, Sony has responded to clarify that the device can actually support multiple accounts. But there’s a catch to that. Sony revealed that each PSN account is tied to the PS Vita’s memory card and thus to have multiple accounts you will need to have multiple cards. According to Sony associate brand marketing manager Crystal MacKenzie, who spoke with Wired.com, PSN accounts are tied to the PS Vita’s proprietary memory cards. You can have multiple memory cards with different PSN accounts associated with each and used them on one PS Vita device. You can also have multiple memory cards with the same PSN account. However, if you want to change the accounts on each memory card you will have to do a factory reset on your PS Vita. “Your PSN ID is bonded to your memory card and your memory card is bonded to your Vita,” said MacKenzie. “So if you wanted to change different PSN users but use the same

Comp Bullet promises tiny holes will silence and speed up your murder spree

Image
When we write about the ever-so-terrible bullet here on Apnadesi, or more specifically when I write about it, you’d better understand right out of the barrel that I don’t condone their usage outside of the sweetness of video games – that’s why I must note that these drilled golden kill-rockets being shown off today by Comp Bullet are awesome, but I’m praying they don’t draw the blood they’re intended for. Of course that’s a fool’s errand, going to pray for such a thing, but I cannot resist the gold – such is life, and such is death. Each Comp Bullet is a precision machined masterpiece, made not only to reduce recoil, but to increase the subsequent velocity of the bullet as it exits your gun’s barrel. What they’ve made here is a little bullet (or several bullets, as it were – each size for a different caliber) that has holes in it, grooves along the sides, and another hole in the back, all of this scientifically calibrated to bring your projectile launching to the newest in best-in-clas

Toshiba Excite Android tablet gets release date

Image
When the first Toshiba Android tablet was released, it seemed like a really big deal – at one point it was even rumored that they’d be the ones to host the tablet-centric Android 3.0 Honeycomb as a hero – alas that did not happen, and now that the first iteration (call the Toshiba Thrive, just so you know) is both too fat and unwieldily to sell as a top dog, the big T is sending out a new generation called Toshiba Excite. This tablet was revealed a few weeks ago as a contender for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with its dual-core 1.2Ghz Texas Instruments OMAP4 processor and its 10.1-inch display at 1280 x 800 resolution – and today Mobile Syrup relays Toshiba information that it’ll be on sale come February 2012. By that time we expect Toshiba to once again be in the same boat – with a tablet that on its own is certainly worth the cash that a person dropped on it, but compared to the rest of the current Android tablet lineup just does not compete. Even though this tablet will still be 7.7m

Google+ Automatic Face Recognition in photos starts today

Image
Starting today there’s a brand new feature on Google+ which works inside the photo app that’ll make it much easier for you to tag the friends in your photos that Google’s recognition engine believes match those you’ve already tagged. This feature is completely opt-in and wont tag anyone unless you flip the on-switch, and as is natural this day and age, Google has made it abundantly clear that they don’t mean to try to swallow your identity up with a barrage of I KNOW YOU alerts. You’ll upload your photos as normal, see that Google+ has some suggestions for you, and say yes or no to each of them. This will remind Facebook users of a very similar feature automatically added in to their photo uploading sequence over the past few months. Your humble narrator’s experience with said feature has shown quite clearly that Facebook thinks that my baby girl is actually my wife’s sister – almost without fail. So that’s weird. Google’s recognition engine might have a bit less luck than that, believ

Photojojo Macro Cell Lens Band works with any smartphone

Image
Just so long as you’ve got a camera on your smartphone, you can bet you’ll have a shot at taking some macro photos with this rubber-band-bound lens as sold by no less than your favorite strange camera store Photojojo. You’ll get what they’re saying is “shockingly detailed phone shots at the snap of a band,” and from the looks of it, they aren’t kidding around. All you’ve got to do is trade Photojojo three of your five dollar bills and they’ll send you a rubber band with a lens in it – sound like a deal? Now you’ve got another option with this band, you could launch it across the room and see if the lens will cut anybody’s eye out, but that’d be a rather expensive way to do such a thing when you could just do it with your phone you’ve already got. What you should end up doing here is pulling the band off the nice storage card you got it with, pull it across your smartphone, and make sure the lens lines up with your own. Then you’ll be in the business – the business of taking tiny sharp

Google Currents social news app for tablets imminent

Image
Google is tipped to be on the precipice of launching its new socially-enabled news reader app, Google Currents, with the iPad and Honeycomb software expected to go live on Friday. Tipped back in September under its codename Propeller, now AllThingsD‘s source claim the app – which will rival stalwarts like Flipboard and Pulse, as well as new challengers like Yahoo!’s Livestand - is set to make its official debut before the week is out. That’s later than originally suggested, with a mid-November release tipped for the app. It’s unclear what prompted the delay, or whether it was simply a matter of the project never being intended for any earlier than this. Either way, according to the initial leaks Currents – as it is now supposedly christened – will pull together what Google learned from its axed Fast Flip news reading system, with a new injection of social networking. That social networking is likely to mean Google+, which has already consumed the sharing functionalitypreviously found i

Galaxy Nexus on sale in Canada

Image
Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus has made its North American debut but, unfortunately for those hoping for some Verizon LTE action, it’s the Canadian carriers who are next to grab the Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. BothVirgin Mobile Canada and Bell Canada are now offering the HSPA+ version of the Galaxy Nexus that we reviewed last month, priced from CA$159.99 with a new, three-year agreement. Alternatively, you can grab the HSPA+ Nexus for CA$649.99, if you want to use a SIM you already have. It’s a pentaband model – supporting the 850/900/1700/1900/2100 UMTS/WCDMA bands – so if you decide to take a quick trip up from the US to grab one in Canada, you’ll then be able to use it on T-Mobile USA or AT&T when you get home. Fellow Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless has already confirmed it will be offering the Galaxy Nexus from January 2012, meanwhile. That leaves us waiting on the LTE model for Verizon in the US, which earlier rumors tipped as arriving tomorrow, December 9, but more recent leaks i

Samsung iPhone 4S French ban attempt rejected

Image
Samsung has been given an embarrassing legal spanking by the French courts, which refused to grant a sales ban against the iPhone 4S and demanded that it pay Apple €100,000 ($134k) in legal fees. Although the sum is likely far less than Apple has actually paid its legal team in France, the decision is a blow to Samsung which had been enjoying a limited run of success against its Cupertino rival in Australia and the US. Samsung filed the suit against Apple back in October, requesting an injunction against the then-freshly-launched iPhone 4S on the grounds that it infringed upon two 3G WCDMA patents the Korean firm holds. “[Apple] has continued  to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free ride on our technology” Samsung claimed, suggesting that “it is now necessary to take legal action to protect our innovation.” The specific patents involved and Samsung’s trigger-happy legal attack have gone on to cause some headaches, with the EC now undertaking an investigation as

Verizon 4G LTE back online

Image
Verizon Wireless has restored its 4G LTE network, following an outage over the past 24-36 hours that saw customers dumped back onto 3G or even 2G data connections. The cause of the outage is yet to be confirmed – Verizon said only that it was a “technical issue” – but subscribers across the US were impacted as the high-speed service went offline, embarrassingly just days after the carrier had celebrated its first year of 4G service. Reports initially suggested that the downtime was limited to the midwest, with customers in Chicago, lower parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa all reporting issues getting online with their 4G smartphones, tablets and modems. That quickly spread to impact other areas, however, until users across the US found their LTE had become unreliable. Verizon had confirmed the problem around 17 hours ago, though at the time was saying that 3G data was unaffected along with calls and texts. Some users suggest that’s not been the case, however, though the service see

Leica V-Lux 3 packs 24x superzoom and 1080p60 HD

Image
Leica has outed its latest superzoom camera, the Leica V-Lux 3, packing a 12.1-megapixel sensor, 24x optical zoom and a 1080p HD video recording mode. The new camera supports up to 12fps full-resolution photography – or up to 60fps at 3.5-megapixels – in addition to ISO 100-3200 and a macro mode that can focus on subjects as close as 1cm away. The camera company is particularly proud of its zoom, a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8-5.2/4.5-108 mm ASPH. lens. Capable of going from a 25 mm wide angle to a 600 mm super-telephoto, it still manages to fit into a 124 x 80 x 95 mm, 540g form-factor. On the back is an adjustable 3-inch 461,000 pixel LCD display with approximately 100-percent field of view, and there’s a stereo microphone and 70MB of internal memory, augmented by an SD/SDHC/SDXC card. Connectivity including USB 2.0, mini HDMI, analog A/V output and a microphone/remote jack. Pricing on the new camera is yet to be confirmed, but it will go on sale in January 2012.

Razer Blade gaming laptop ships imminently

Image
Gaming device manufacturer Razer has confirmed it will be offering pre-orders on its $2,799.99 Blade uber-notebook within days, with the laptop – that has a touchscreen for easier in-game control – expected to ship in time for Christmas. There’s also been a quiet feature change, CEO Min-Liang Tan informed Kotaku, with a 256GB SSD taking the place of the originally specified 320GB HDD. Otherwise specifications remain the same, which means a 17-inch display, 2.8GHz Intel Core i7-2640M processor, and 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM. Graphics are courtesy of NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 555M with NVIDIA Optimus, paired with their own 2GB of GDDR5 video memory. More interesting, however, is the compact touchscreen that lives to the side of the backlit keyboard. That works as a secondary display and as a shortcut panel, supporting multitouch gestures, and is topped by ten user-programmable buttons each with their own display, similar to what the  Optimus Popularis  delivers.

DRM gets creative as Serious Sam attacks pirates with pink scorpion

Image
Game DRM can be annoyingly complex, so mild as to be ineffectual, or, as in  Serious Sam 3 BFE , it can be a giant, invincible pink scorpion that refuses to leave pirate gamers alone. Those attempting to play with cracked copies of the first-person shooter will discover that, while they’re able to attempt the first level, their challenge will be a whole lot trickier than those with legitimate copies thanks to an immortal pink arachnid determined to kill them, The Dark Side of Gaming reports. The innovative system is the handiwork of  Serious Sam 3 BFE ‘s developers, Croatian company Croteam, and is already being praised for delivering DRM security without the usual headaches. Legitimate gamers – who have paid for the game – will never see the scorpion, only those who are playing pirated versions of it. Our only disappointment is that the pink scorpion itself isn’t as ridiculous as it could’ve been. Nothing flags up to your friends the fact that you’re too cheap to buy a game like being

Bill Gates helping China build super-safe nuclear reactor

Image
Bill Gates is helping China go nuclear safely, with an innovative new reactor design being developed betweenTerrapower and Chinese engineers that would prioritize long-lasting, clean energy with minimal waste. Gates expects work on the fourth-gen reactor to cost in excess of $1bn over the next five years, the BBC reports, with the company he founded, Terrapower, helping produce a so-called “traveling wave reactor” that would be far safer than previous models despite running continuously for up to 60 years. “The idea is to be very low cost, very safe and generate very little waste” Gates said this week, publicly confirming the talks between Terrapower and the Chinese National Nuclear Corporation. Although talks are at an “early stage” one of the key benefits of the fourth-gen design is that they are created with safety as the default. “All these new designs are going to be incredibly safe,” Gates insisted, point out that “they require no human action to remain safe at all times.” Travel

$290 Galaxy Nexus tipped as retailers struggle to shave price

Image
A $300 price tag for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus looks increasingly likely, with the latest leak indicating even cost-cutting wholesalers like Costco can’t bring the coveted Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone down by more than a few bucks. A leaked screenshot from the members-only retailer suggests the LTE Galaxy Nexus will be $289.99 with a new, two year agreement, phoneArena reports, though Costco will at least sweeten the deal somewhat with a mysterious “Member Bonus Accessory Pack.” That’s $10 less than the price we’re expecting Verizon to announce officially for the Galaxy Nexus, in keeping with the carrier’s new – and unpleasant – tradition of pricing top-tier handsets at $300 rather than $200 or, at most $250, as has been the case in recent years. Costco’s systems are apparently also suggesting November 9 – i.e. tomorrow – as the release date, though given other recent rumors that now seems unlikely. Verizon is sticking to its stance that there’s no official date and thus no delay, thou

Volt fires possibly caused be welded parts near the battery pack

Image
The Chevrolet Volt has been under investigation for a while now after several of the vehicles caught fire after crash testing. GM has since offered to buy the Volts back from concerned drivers and the issue has hurt sales of the vehicle that were already slow. The NHTSA is now zeroing in on a possible cause for the fires after the crash tests. The WSJ reports that the NHTSA has asked its testing centers to examine welded components under the car that are near the battery pack. Specifically the NHTSA calls for photos of the “floorplan/crossmember near the battery tunnel.” The WSJ reports that the engineers at GM working in the issue think that they can apply a fix to cars in the files once the issue is pinpointed without having to do major recalls. According to GM, the cause for the fires is cooling lines that were damaged in the side impact tests. Once that coolant line breaks the coolant drips out onto wiring the battery uses. Once that coolant crystallizes, it causes a short in the w

Xbox 360 and PS3 controller rings shows gamer geek pride

Image
If you are a gaming geek that loves to play on the Xbox 360 or the PS3 and you have a penchant for gaudy geek jewelry this is the gift for you. A seller over on Etsy going by the user egyptianruin and selling in a store called Kelly’s Keychains has created some geeky rings that look like controllers for your favorite console. You can hop over, see samples in black or white colors, and choose the color for your own ring from the list. You can get white, black, pink, blue, red, green, and halo green. A custom ring is $10 and the shipping to you is only a few more dollars. Apparently, the rings are made from polymer clay and are hand sculpted. This store has some interesting stuff for sale. These would make nice gifts on the cheap for gaming fans of all sorts. I wonder where the PC gamer rings are. A cool gaming mouse with the cord that wraps around the finger would suffice.

Apple 3D display & Kinect-style tracking system still in labs

Image
A newly filed Apple patent application suggests the company is still working on a Kinect-style 3D motion tracking system, that could create a virtual desktop responding to a user’s hand and finger movements rather than keyboard and mouse actions. The application,  Three-dimensional imaging and display system , describes a system where “user input is optically detected in an imaging volume”: in short, both of a user’s hands are tracked in the space around an Apple computer, and on-screen or projected virtual controls – such as dials, buttons or pens – can be manipulated as if touching them in real life. The system would operate “by measuring the path length of an amplitude modulated scanning beam as a function of the phase shift thereof” while simultaneously “visual image user feedback concerning the detected user input is presented” Apple’s document suggests. A more simple implementation might track movement in 3D space around the computer and simply show the results on-screen; however

FCC manual confirms Nokia Lumia 710 for T-Mobile

Image
You have to love the FCC as a geek. Those government workers just leak stuff willy-nilly and it makes us all happy. Today the FCC has posted up a manual for the T-Mobile version of the Nokia Lumia 710 smartphone. We have already spent our share of hands-on time with the Lumia 710 not too long ago. It should be a nice budget handset for some users. This is rather interesting to find the manual on the FCC site considering that the last time Nokia said anything about the 710 and the US when the info was on the US Nokia site, the firm was claiming the 710 would not come to the US. It’s also worth noting that the invites to the T-Mobile event we posted up are expected to be for a Lumia phone, now it seems like the 710 is that phone. The manual the FCC posted is clearly for the 710 considering the image above is from the manual and shows that T-Mobile brand on the bottom. The smartphone has a 1.4GHz Snapdragon CPU and the ability to capture video in 720p HD resolution. The phone also comes i

AMD adds new parts to A-series notebook APU range

Image
AMD has been working to update many of its CPU and APU lines to bring them up to par with Intel counterparts. One of the lines of new products that AMD has updated recently is the A-Series notebook line of APUs. The chip firm has added seven new parts to the A-Series and all of the new parts have similar tweaks compared to the existing parts. The new processors include the A8-3520M, A8-3550MX, A6-3430MX, A4-330MX, A4-3320M and A4-3305M. All of the processors with the exception of the A4-330MX, A4-3320M and A4-3305M units are 100MHz faster on their base frequency and on the Turbo Core frequency. Other not so good changes include the A4-3305M losing 1MB of cache and keeping the same operating frequency as the A4-3300M that it is replacing. The 3305M does have a GPU with a higher clock speed than the 3300M GPU at 593MHz compared to the 444MHz of the older part. That new part sounds like a downgrade to me.

Nokia looks to sell luxury Vertu mobile phone brand

Image
Nokia has been operating Vertu since 1998, which is a long time. I always thought that the company couldn’t have too many people lining up to purchase mobile phones that lack any smart features selling for upwards of $314,000. My assumption of Vertu not selling well was wrong; it has been outperforming Nokia’s other segments. Vertu is estimated to be generating in the area of $268 million to $402 million yearly. Nokia has hired Goldman Sachs to oversee the sale of the company with the FT reporting that a source close to the deal says talks are still in the early stages. There has reportedly been interest expressed from private equity firms in Vertu. Nokia is hoping that a luxury goods company might buy the Vertu brand according to the source close to the deal. Vertu is sold in over 60 countries with the biggest markets of the brand in the Middle East, Russia, and Asia. Since the Vertu brand lacks smartphones, the big draw is the devices that are made from precious metals and often have
