iPhone 4S camera records amazing video

Image
Among several new features, the iPhone 4S packs a much improved 8-megapixel rear-facing camera that’s been getting lots of praise. According to a recent IHS teardown, the iPhone 4S uses a 5-lens camera module, a first for smartphones. But there’s no better way to judge camera quality than with some sample stills and footage. Film maker and photographer Benjamin Dowie posted a short video taken with the iPhone 4S that’s quite stunning. Catch the video after the cut. The new iPhone 4S camera now boasts an 8-megapixel resolution, 1080p HD video capture, faster picture taking, and 73% more light from a next-gen backside illumination technology. It’s improved lens features a f/2.4 aperture, which really gives nice depth of field effects and you’ll see plenty examples of that in the below video. You’ll also see the camera’s real-time stabilization in action as Dowie gets fairly steady footage while holding the camera simply in his hand sans tripod. Dowie admits that he did apply a slight

T-Mobile offers new Monthly4G unlimited plans

Image
As the only major US carrier still without the iPhone, T-Mobile gets creative with its plan offerings to stay in the game and entice new customers. Today, the company introduced four new wireless plans that include a Monthly4G unlimited plan as well as three Pay by the Day plans that let customers pay for only the days they intend to use their mobile phones. The Monthly4G plan costs $60 per month and offers unlimited talk, text, and 4G data. It also does not require an annual contract. Sounds rather enticing, but the catch is that your data speeds get throttled after you use more than 2GB. If you’re not a heavy data user and stick to WiFi whenever you can, it shouldn’t be an issue. The Pay by the Day plans include a $3 per day unlimited talk, text and web plan that provides 4G speeds on data up to 200MB, after which data speeds will get throttled. There’s also a $2 per day plan for unlimited talk, text, and web at 2G speeds as well as $1 per day plan for unlimited text and 10-cents

Sony PS3 and PS Move Black Friday bundles leaked

Image
The special holiday bundles that Sony is preparing have leaked thanks to images of the printed packaging shot by Scream777, who claims to work at Sony’s packaging facility. The shots were then posted by SlickDeals and includes both special edition game titles as well as complete gaming bundles for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Move. The deals should hit store shelves in time for Thanksgiving’s Black Friday sale. The shots reveal packaging for a previously unannounced Mayhem edition PS Move kit that includes a Sharpshooter peripheral along with Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 game titles. There’s also a box for what’s called the Complete Entertainment Bundle, which includes a 160GB PS3 game console, the game titles Little Big Planet 2 as well as Ratchet and Clank: All for One, and one free month of PlayStation Plus. The Complete Entertainment Bundle is expected to be around $250 and the source of the images notes that an order invoice for the packaging suggests that they are to be a

iPhone 4S sales restricted to reservations only

Image
Apple’s iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units over the past weekend and due to the immense demand, the device is now available in stores by reservation only. This bit was revealed by Apple’s “How To Buy” web page for the iPhone 4S, where the in-store on-the-spot purchase option has been completely replaced by a reservation requirement that must be made after 9:00pm for pickup the next day. This new method for picking up the iPhone 4S is required for all purchases in Apple retail stores in the US and Canada. Although it seems that some Apple stores are still allowing walk-in customers to pick up the iPhone 4S, the supplies are going so quickly that the company is now pushing for reservations in order to avoid long lines and disappointed customers. In other parts of the world, Apple is also limiting walk-in sales of the iPhone 4S. Reservations after 9:00pm are required for both the on-contract as well as the SIM-free iPhone 4S models but only the on-contract version can be obtaine

Siri, can you make me dump Android?

Image
Until now I’ve been inured to the iPhone’s charms. iOS has its strengths, but – barring three months of iPhone 3G ownership – Android has always been my daily driver. My dedication to Google wavered, though, when Apple unveiled Siri on the iPhone 4S: not just voice recognition, but the promise of the first real artificial intelligence (AI) on a mobile platform. Was Siri really as good as Apple made out – and as Vincent found it to be in our iPhone 4S review – and more importantly could it wean me off Android? I grabbed a 4S to find out. The promise, and Apple’s demo, is compelling: forget packing a bigger screen into a chunkier handset, and instead allow a personal assistant to help you manage your messages, multimedia, schedule and social life. Siri was Apple’s middle-finger gesture to the hardware arms-race that epitomizes the Android smartphone market today. Don’t just make a phone that runs 1-percent faster, make one that actually works better with users’ needs. Sadly, the real

Google Wallet adds coupons, rewards, and more retail partners

Image
Google Wallet unveiled its first batch of retail partners last week, which included American Eagle Outfitters, The Container Store, Foot Locker, Guess, Jamba Juice, Macy’s, OfficeMax, and Toys R Us. And today, the company has even more good news for the select few with the NFC-equipped Nexus S 4G, revealing that those retail partners will also begin offering coupons and rewards points exclusively through Google Wallet. So, if you’re toting the Nexus S 4G with Google Wallet, you can now waltz into any one of those retail partner locations to pay for your purchase, redeem coupons, and/or earn rewards points all with a single tap of your phone. Google calls this the Google Wallet SingleTap experience. The app has also been updated so that the Offers tab now shows a Featured Offers section of discounts that are exclusive to Google Wallet. The deals for today include 15% off at American Eagle Outfitters, 10% off at The Container Store, 15% off at Macy’s, and a $2 all-fruit smoothie from

HTC loses to Apple in ITC patent infringement complaint

Image
The International Trade Commission (ITC) in the US has ruled in favor of Apple in HTC’s original patent infringement complaint against the Cupertino company. Judge Charles Bullock issued the ruling today, stating that Apple did not violate any of the four patents in question. The complaint was filed back in 2010 and the patents involved basic functions like phone dialing and power management. The patents were not invalidated, instead, the ITC simply found that Apple’s iPads, iPhones, and iPods did not violate them. This preliminary decision will see a final hearing sometime in February of 2012. Although HTC and Apple still have other legal battlefields, this one is quite a setback for HTC, as it loses one major negotiation chip for reaching a settlement and saving itself from a possible injunction. Apple initiated the legal scuffle between the two companies and is also embroiled in a multinational patent battle with Samsung, which is similarly facing a possible injunction here in t

Google IO 2012 dates announced

Image
It’s the biggest Google developer event of the year, Google IO, and it feels like we were just there, but next year’s dates have been announced already! The 2012 Google IO event will be taking place on April 24th through the 25th and will be housed at the fabulous Moscone Center West in San Francisco, California. Heat! Bring your Easter baskets and put those Android bunny ears on because by that time, it’ll be a whole different game on the mobile operating system front for the big G. Add that date to your calendar folks, we’ll be there without a doubt! Registration dates for the event will be coming soon, with details still rather scant as far as who’s going to be speaking there and what’ll exactly be going on on the floor. You can check out our gigantic [Google IO portal] for information on what’s been revealed in years past, especially 2011 where Ice Cream Sandwich was announced formally for the first time! Look at that logo! Then of course there were the freebies! There was a fr

Texas Instruments OMAP 5 processor demoed [Videos]

Image
The kind folks at Texas Instruments have released a couple of videos showing off their next generation of processors, the OMAP 5 platform, complete with graphics that’ll make you blow your spleen out. This System on Chip that’s otherwise known as TI OMAP 5 for short is one that was outed earlier this year complete with two 28nm ARM Cortex-A15 MPCores running at up to 2GHz. If that means anything to you, do read on! If you’re completely baffled by processors in general, watch these videos, they’re informative! What we knew about this platform back when it was announced was that there’d be at least two new processors, OMAP5430 and OMAP5432, both of them with up to 3 times the performance of previous generations OMAP4430. Want to know what devices run an OMAP right now? Have a look at our lovely Texas Instruments portal and see for yourself: everything from the legendary DROID BIONIC to the Archos 80 G9 tablet to the possibility of being in the Samsung Nexus Prime, the device we hope to

Motorola DROID RAZR teased again, now with more hump! [Video]

Image
We’re less than a day away from a Motorola event taking place in New York City that’ll be the place where the newest handset from the manufacturer will be revealed. What we know at the moment is limited, but given the brand new teaser site released today, we’re getting a pretty clear idea of what it COULD mean to see this next generation “Faster. Thinner. Smarter. Stronger” device. The first clue is a square image that shows off two bits of information – one, that the back or side of the device will be rounded ever so slightly – two, that the back of the device will have a rather nice hump on it – is it on the top or is it on the bottom? You can check out the newest teaser site over at http://reveal.motorola.com/ if you wish, and have another look at that super fabulous teaser video below – the one difference between it and the version we saw previously is the fact that it’s got a lovely new placeholder (on the site) that you can see here in this post as the main post image. What is

iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S II drop test [Video]

Image
There’s just a few tests that every single device should go through after their released, this drop test being one of them – will it bust? When you’ve got a couple of smartphones that are selling so well that they’re bound to be compared to one another in just about every sort of test imaginable, is the dropping from shoulder height test that’ll get our attention after we’ve seen everything else. When you’ve got one phone that’s made out of metal and MOSTLY glass on the outside, that being the iPhone 4S, and another phone by the name of Galaxy S II that’s made out of Gorilla Glass and MOSTLY plastic on the outside, the results are going to be pretty obvious when you drop them both on the cement – but why not watch anyway? The iPhone, since it was released with a mostly glass chassis, hasn’t exactly been known for its rough and tumble ability to stay in perfect condition. Instead the glass on the front and the back are in place because, heck, how many times do you drop the thing a day

Top four US mobile providers agree to Wireless Consumer Usage Notification Guidelines

Image
Before the government can force them to do something more drastic, each of the top four mobile service providers in the USA have announced today that they’ve agreed to voluntary industry guidelines amid cell phone bill shock that includes sending customers alerts before they reach their monthly voice, text, and data limits. Are you one of those people who freaks out each month when you realized you’ve actually used 15GB of data when your limit was 2GB? Bills smashing your wallet so hard you’re thinking of taking out a mortgage on your home to continue use of your iPhone or Android or BlackBerry device? Those days are at an end! Included in this set of completely voluntarily followed guidelines, providers would be sent information about their monthly limits BEFORE they reach them – plus, for those traveling abroad, alerts will be sent out showing customers what they’ll be paying if they want to continue using the devices they’re using overseas – roaming fees and the like. These regula
